21 need to know for 1st time Income Tax Payers

Attention to all taxpayers, especially if you are a first-time taxpayer.

Inland Revenue Board Of Malaysia (IRB) gave discounts for income taxpayers every year if the taxpayers fulfill some terms.

Here are the 21 updates of the terms you need to pay your attention:

1. Individual and dependent relatives

You get a discount of up to RM 9,000 if you have family members who rely on your financial support.

2. Parents' medical treatment, special needs and carer expenses

This offer only valid if your parents (biological or foster parents) are certified by a medical practitioner.

The amount of discount is up to RM 5,000.  

You can get a deduction of RM 1,500 for only one father and RM 1, 500 for only one mother.

3.Basic supporting equipment for disabled self, spouse, child or parent

Basic supporting equipment is referring to the equipment that people need to live their daily lives, including wheelchairs, hearing aids, Haemodialysis machines and artificial legs.

You may claim a rebate up to RM 6,000.

4. Disabled individual

You can get a discount up RM6,000 if you are a disabled individual certified by The Department of Social Welfare Malaysia.

5. Education Fee (yourself)

RM7,000 is allowed to be claimed if you are studying Masters or PhD level (of any course) or any tertiary level studies in law, accounting, Islamic finance, technical, vocational, industrial, scientific or technology.

6. Medical expenses for serious diseases for self, spouse or child

You can claim a rebate up to RM6,000 if yourself, your wife/husband or your child suffer from serious diseases.

Of course, you need to have legit documents to prove the sickness.

7. Complete medical examination for self, spouse, child

Make sure you kept the documents that prove that you, your spouse and/or even your child have gotten a full medical check-up.

You may enjoy a tax relief up to RM500.

However, the total claim you can get from expenses from the medical examination and the serious diseases is limited to RM6,000.

For example, if you already claimed RM5,700 from the serious diseases expenses, you can only claim up to RM300 for the medical examination expenses.

8. Lifestyle expenses for yourself, spouse and child.

You may claim up to a total RM2,500 your expenses fall under these four categories:

i) Purchase of books/journals/magazines/printed newspapers/other similar publications (Not banned publication).

ii) Purchase of personal computers, tablets and smartphones (personal use only).

iii)Purchase of sports equipment for sports activity defined under the Sports Development Act 1997 and payment of gym membership.

iv) Payment of monthly bill for internet subscription which is under your name.

9. Purchase of breastfeeding equipment for own use for a child aged 2 and below

You can only have this deduction once every two years which limited to RM 1,000 per deduction.

10. Child care fees to a registered child care centre/kindergarten for a child aged 6 years and below.

A maximum of RM 1,000 can be claimed.

11. Net deposit in Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (SSPN)

The total amount you can claim under this category is the total deposited amount in 2019 minus the total withdrawal in 2019 with the limit up to RM 8,000.

12. Husband/wife payment of alimony to the former spouse

You may enjoy a discount up to RM 4,000 if you are providing alimony to your former spouse.

13. Disabled husband/wife

You may claim up to RM 3,500 if your spouse is a certified disabled individual under The Department of Social Welfare Malaysia.

14. Unmarried child and under the age of 18 years old

A deduction of RM 2,000 is available for each of your unmarried child that is under 18 years old. For example, if you have two children who are below than 18 years old and unmarried, you can get a deduction of RM 4,000 for your income tax.

15. Each unmarried child of 18 years and above who is receiving full-time education

You may enjoy RM 2,000 discount for each of your child who is studying full-time in A-Level, certificate, matriculation or preparatory courses.

16. Each unmarried child who is 18 years old and above which fall under this category:

i) Receiving further education IN Malaysia in respect of an award of a diploma or higher (excluding matriculation/preparatory courses).

ii) Receiving further education OUTSIDE Malaysia in respect of an award of a degree or its equivalent (including Master or Doctorate).

iii) The instruction and educational establishment shall be approved by the relevant government authority.

The claim under this category is restricted up to RM 8,000

17. Disabled child.

You can claim up to RM 6,000 if you have a disabled child.

An additional RM 8,000 claim is available if your disabled child is:

i) 18 years old and above.

ii) Unmarried.

iii) Pursuing diplomas or above qualification IN Malaysia or bachelor degree and above OUTSIDE Malaysia in any Higher Education Institute that is accredited by related Government authorities.

18. Life insurance and EPF INCLUDING not through salary deduction

The claim is up to RM 7,000 regarding on the terms below:

i) Public servant - RM 7,000 for a life insurance premium.

ii) Not a public servant - RM 3,000 for life insurance premium and RM 4,000 for the contribution to EPF/approved scheme.

19. Deferred Annuity and Private Retirement Scheme (PRS)

Only for those valid from year assessment 2012 until year assessment 2021 with total claim of RM 3,000.

20. Education and medical insurance INCLUDING not through salary deduction

You can claim up to RM 3,000 under this category.

21. Contribution to the Social Security Organization (SOCSO)

A deduction up to RM 250 if you pay SOCSO.

It is better to know or else you may lose your rebate.
