To many out there (especially men), you can&rsquo;t deny that you&rsquo;re a sports fan. If there&rsquo;s one sport that many love out there, it&rsquo;s football.
Unlike most sports, you won&rsquo;t see a venue packed full of people just cheering for two teams at the top of their lungs. Yeah, we can&rsquo;t do that for sports like Golf and Tennis.

Football Match Gone Wrong
Recently, a disastrous stampede had happened in Malang in East Java, Indonesia after football team Arema FC lost to Persebaya Surabaya with a score of 2-3. Supporters of Arema FC had went on to invade the pitch to express their frustration with the match.

As the fans invaded the pitch, the East Java Police Officers had attempted to control the &ldquo;riots&rdquo; around the stadium by firing tear gas. This had caused a chain reaction of fans to panic and rushing to find an exit gate. In the midst of all the chaos, some fans had suffocated in the cloud of smoke while others had been trampled to death. Within the stadium alone, it was reported that at least 34 people, including two police officers had died at the stadium.

According to East Java Vice Governor Emil Dardak, the death toll had been revised down to 125 people due to some names being recorded down twice in comparison to the original figure of 174 (on the day itself). Among those who lost their lives in the stampede, one of the victims was only 5-years-old.

Aside from the stampede and riot in the stadium, riots also broke out outside the stadium with crowds attacking police officers and damaging vehicles.

Aside from the tear gas fired at the spectators, Mahfud MD who&rsquo;s the country&rsquo;s minister of political, legal and security affairs released a statement on his Instagram that the stadium had been filled beyond its capacity. Instead of the supposed 38,000 tickets being issued, a total of 42,000 (an extra of 4,000) was issued instead.

It was also advised that due the overcrowding of the stadium, authorities had advised for the game to be held in the afternoon in where the organizer had ignored it. Due to the two teams being long time rivals, the supporters of Persebaya Surabaya were not allowed to purchase tickets for the game, therefore ruling out the class and riot of the supports was not between one another but with the fans of Arema FC alone.
Football League Suspended

In a televised statement, President Joko Widodo had ordered an investigation into the tragedy as well as a safety review into all football matches. As of now, the country&rsquo;s football association has been ordered to suspend all matches from Indonesia&rsquo;s top leagues, BRI Liga 1, until the &ldquo;security improvements&rdquo; are completed.
&ldquo;I deeply regret this tragedy and I hope this football tragedy will be the last in our country,&rdquo; Widodo said.
The victims&rsquo; families from this incident will be compensated and will receive 15 million rupiah (~RM4,557.73) along with the hospital cost of victims being fully covered for.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had issued a statement as he is left in a state of shock.
&ldquo;This is a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following this tragic incident. Together with FIFA and the global football community, all out thoughts and prayers are with the victims, those who have bene injured, together with the people of the Republic of Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation, the Indonesian Football Association and the Indonesian Football League, at this difficult time,&rdquo; he said.
FIFA had also specified in a safety regulation that the usage of firearms or &ldquo;crowd control gas&rdquo; should not be carried out or used by stewards or police. At the time of writing, East Java Police had not respond to the request for comments if they had been informed of such regulations.
To date, this has been one of the worse sporting incidents in both Indonesia and Football history in terms of fan violence and death of fans.
Hopefully there won&rsquo;t be more incidents like this in the future for Indonesia and any other sports. Condolences to all the victims and families involved.

Darvien has been charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction. If the court opts not to impose the death sentence, he faces imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years up to 40 years, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane.
Thineswary, meanwhile, was charged under Section 109, read together with Section 302 of the Penal Code, for allegedly abetting the murder. If convicted, she too could face the same penalties.
Timeline of Events Leading to the Crime

Both appeared separately before Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani. Darvien was clad in a plain white T-shirt, while Thineswary was dressed in black. No pleas were recorded during the session, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Prosecution and Defence Submissions

Following a post-mortem examination, the cause of death was confirmed as blunt force trauma to the head. Police later revealed that the male suspect had allegedly stayed at the unit before the killing, having been granted access through keys and an entry card provided by his girlfriend.

Lawyers Datuk Rajpal Singh, Raspreet Kaur, and Sarabmeet Singh appeared on behalf of the victim&rsquo;s family, holding a watching brief. Claims of Malaysian Origin Stir Online Backlash

Amid the euphoria, tension quietly simmered when a few alleged Malaysian accounts began commenting under the viral videos, claiming that pacu jalur originated in Malaysia. The remarks ignited a strong backlash among Indonesian netizens, who swiftly condemned the perceived cultural appropriation. The issue snowballed into national headlines after prominent Indonesian news outlets and public figures weighed in.
Riau Governor Abdul Wahid responded to the controversy by urging calm, stating that cultural exchange between neighbouring nations like Malaysia and Indonesia is natural due to shared roots. However, he firmly reiterated that the tradition of pacu jalur is historically and culturally linked to Kuantan Singingi, not Malaysia.
&ldquo;Cultural assimilation is inevitable, but look at the facts and reality &mdash; pacu jalur has long existed in Riau. It's not a recent phenomenon,&rdquo; he told Detik. Wahid also confirmed that Dika has been appointed as Riau&rsquo;s tourism ambassador for his role in bringing global attention to the tradition.
Were the Claims Really From Malaysians?

Interestingly, further investigation suggests that the original comments claiming Malaysian origin might not have come from Malaysians at all. A TikTok user reviewed the profiles responsible for the claims and discovered that they were registered under Indonesian locations, raising questions about whether false flag accounts or misunderstood comments fueled the controversy.
Malaysian outlet Murai.my clarified that while a pacu jalur-inspired event was once held in Perlis, it was never marketed as a native Malaysian tradition. Instead, the event served to introduce Malaysians to regional cultures &mdash; especially in northern states with strong ties to Sumatra &mdash; and was never recognised as part of Malaysia&rsquo;s official cultural heritage.
The site also warned readers about the volatile nature of online discourse, pointing out that even a single offhand remark can spiral into a full-blown cultural dispute in today&rsquo;s social media landscape, especially when it involves the long-standing sensitivities between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Calls for Accuracy Amid Shared Histories

Indonesian Culture Minister Fadli Zon has reaffirmed pacu jalur&rsquo;s heritage status, while Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka joined the trend in solidarity by posting his own rendition of Dika&rsquo;s dance. Local officials, including Riau&rsquo;s tourism director and Kuantan Singingi cultural leaders, have also stressed that historical records, rituals, and practices tied to the event all point to its deep Indonesian origins.
Roni Rakhmat, head of Riau's Tourism Department, dismissed the Malaysian origin claims as baseless: &ldquo;There are long-standing rituals, ceremonies, and a deep cultural process behind it. The historical documentation is clear &mdash; this is Riau&rsquo;s heritage.&rdquo;
Ultimately, while the trend has sparked joy and cultural curiosity, it has also become a reminder of how digital virality can blur national boundaries and historical context, often with unintended consequences.
