2022 has been a pretty &ldquo;dull&rdquo; year for movies. Most of the time, we are greeted with many movies by Marvel movies all year long where audiences are left at the edge of their seats to wait for continuation of the stories.
But this year, we only saw a handful of movies from Marvel such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder (which never screened in Malaysia), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (available online).
Aside from that, we also had arguably one of the best movies of the year, Top Gun: Maverick staring Tom Cruise which made 1.488 billion USD in the box office gross worldwide, making it one of two films which gross $1 billion since the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

But coming into 2023, we&rsquo;ll be getting a dose of incredible films and many of them will fall under the sci-fi category. Many of us are also looking forward to the 5th Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the approach DC Studios will be taking since they have made a lot of changes to how the franchise works.

Let&rsquo;s Check Out The Movies Coming Out In 2023!
1) Rebel Moon

Let&rsquo;s first start things off with Rebel Moon. The movie will be releasing on Netflix and it&rsquo;s produced none other than Zack Snyder who&rsquo;s well known for his movies in DC such as Man Of Steel, Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice as well as Justice League.
The movie is inspired by the works of Akira Kurosawa and the Star Wars franchise. It will be featuring a story of a young woman portrayed by Sofia Boutella who sets out of a quest to save the galaxy. It&rsquo;s also said that Rebel Moon is pitched as a more mature conclusion to the original Star Wars prequels. Interesting huh?
Some did critique that it is a rip off of Star Wars but the reason behind this is cause Snyder initially intended this film as a Star Wars movie, but his idea was shit down by Walt Disney Co.
2) The Mothership

The Mothership, not to be mistaken with Singapore news portal Mothership, is another Netflix original who will star Halle Berry. She will be playing a woman who discovers an extra-terrestrial object under her home a year after her husband mysteriously disappears.
She&rsquo;ll be staring alongside Molly Parker and Omari Hardwick as well. So far, further details about the film has not been announced and a release date hasn&rsquo;t been announced as well but viewers can expect a pretty good adventure from this!
3) Spaceman

Did you catch the popular HBO series Chernobyl? Well, if you did then you&rsquo;ll certainly enjoy watching Spaceman as Johan Renck will be bringing this adaptation of the 2017 novel, Spaceman of Bohemia to Netflix.
Staring Adam Sandler, he will be playing a man who was raised in the Czech countryside by his grandparents after being orphaned. He has dreams of becoming the country&rsquo;s first astronaut and wants to embark on a dangerous mission to Venus.
4) M3GAN

&nbsp;Wanna have a mix of horror and Sci-fi? Then M3GAN would be the right movie to catch! It will be releasing on 5th Jan 2023 in Malaysia!
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence and is a lifelike doll that&rsquo;s programmed to be a child&rsquo;s greatest companion and an ally to parents. The movie will star Allison Williams, Violet McGraw and Amie Donald as the robot. M3GAN will tell the story of how Gemma (played by Williams) of who gains custody of her niece, Cady (played by McGraw) after her parents were killed in a car accident. The robot is over protective and M3GAN will be keeping and eye on Cady where a decision will lead to an unimaginable consequence.

5) Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

Here&rsquo;s something many are waiting for as we&rsquo;ll be seeing Scott Lang a.k.a Ant-Man on the big screens again!
Ant-Man and The Wasp is set to kickstart the latest MCU Phase 5 where they&rsquo;ll go back into the Quantum Realm and is set to go toe-to-toe with Kang who&rsquo;s the new villain. The film is going to be one of the most important films in the MCU as it sets the pace of the new build up for Phase 5 and 6. It will be releasing on 16 February 2023.

6) 65

Do you miss seeing Adam Driver on the big screens? Well mark your calendars as he&rsquo;ll be returning back to the big screen in the sci-fi film, 65 on 10 March 2023.
He&rsquo;ll be playing the role of an astronaut who finds himself stranded on a prehistoric Earth after a catastrophic crash. The thing to expect from this is an element of old school horror as it&rsquo;s produced by Sam Raimi who&rsquo;s produced movies such as The Evil Dead and Darkman.

7) Shazam! Fury Of The Gods

Shazam! ⚡
DC Extended Universe will premiering their twelfth film Shazam! Fury of the Gods staring Zachary Levi. This time around, we&rsquo;ll be seeing Shazam&rsquo;s superhero siblings joining in the battle against the Daughters of Atlas and making peace with the Gods after taking their powers for granted.
The movie has been delayed several times by DC due to Avatar 2 taking up the editing studios and them making forward for movies such as Black Adam. It&rsquo;s set to premier on 16 March 2023.

8) Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3

The Guardians are back and we&rsquo;ll be seeing Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillian, Pom Klementieff and Vin Diesel as the guardians. This time around, they&rsquo;ll be going up against the new villians such as Adam Warlock played by William Poulter and likes of the High Evolutionary who&rsquo;s played by Chukwudi Iwuji.
It&rsquo;s also said that this will be the most emotional film among the three series as there&rsquo;s speculations that someone will die during the story as director James Gunn confirmed that the Guardians team will never be the same again.

9) Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently set to be one of the most highly anticipated movies in 2023 as it follows up to its 2018 movie which won multiple awards.&ldquo;Brooklyn&rsquo;s full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man&rdquo; will find himself on an adventure going through different multiverses with another new team of Spider-mans.
The movie is set to release on 1 June 2023 and hints of a 3rd film set to release in 2024 is also happening! The one thing many will be looking forward to the movie is the different styles of artworks that will be featured making it one of the more unique animated films out there.

10) Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts 
This time around, Transformers is looking to reboot from their Michael Bay Era of movies. After the success of Bumblebee, they had quickly started on making a new sequel which is a follow up from Bumblebee and an adaptation of Transformers: Beast Wars. The movie will feature Terrorcons, Maximals and Predacons and is set as an adventure in 1994.
As for the stars of the film, it will feature Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback who&rsquo;ll play archaeologists. The movie will be releasing on 8 June 2023.

11) The Flash

Next up we have The Flash. Without a doubt, he&rsquo;s one of the most well-known DC Studio hero as he&rsquo;s one of the hero&rsquo;s with an ongoing TV series. This will be considered as the thirteenth film from the DC Extended Universe and its likely the film that will be helping to reset the franchise.
This time around, Ezra Miller will be reprising the role of Barry Allen from the movie due to controversial issues with Driving Under The Influence (DUI). There&rsquo;s says that Ben Affleck will be returning as Bruce Wayne in the movies too and they&rsquo;ll also introduce Michael Keaton as Batman as well. The movie is set to release on 16 June 2023
12) The Marvels

&nbsp;Coming back to the topic of Marvel, in the film The Marvels, we&rsquo;ll see their youngest filmmaker, Nia DaCosta who&rsquo;ll bring the sequel to 2019&rsquo;s Captain Marvel into the MCU with Carol Danvers.
The Marvels will see three superheroes together for the first time in a strange story which will see them working out why they keep swapping places with one another. Plus, our favourite Samuel L. Jackson will also be returning as Nick Fury in the film.The movie will be releasing on 28 July 2023.
13) Dune: Part Two

&nbsp;The second part of the epic 2021 adaptation of Dune will be premiering as they seek to conclude the story told during the first film. The entire cast will still play their roles for this film. Fans will have to wait most of the year to see the spectacle of Dune: Part Two in theaters and it&rsquo;s certainly worth the wait.
The movie will be releasing on 2 November 2023 but a trailer for the movie has yet to be dropped.
14) The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes

The last time we sae the Hunger Games was back in 2015 with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay &ndash; Part 2. This time around, the new movie will act as a prequel to the original The Hunger Games film series where they show us more details of the life of the young Coriolanus Snow during the 10th Annual Hunger Games. The movie will premier on 17 November 2023.

15) Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom

Lastly, we have Aquaman on the list where its first movie had received mixed responses from audiences and critics. In all honesty, the first movie was a refreshing change for DC Movies and it was also very well done.
The sequel will be releasing near to Christmas Day 2023 and Jason Momoa will be returning as Aquaman alongside William Dafoe and supposedly Amber Heard. But due to the infamous trial with Johnny Depp. In fact, due to it, they had to remove her from the movie and refilm a good majority of the film to replace her out.
As for the plot of the film, there&rsquo;s not much revealed but its certain that there will be a buddy-cop film concept being explored between Aquaman and Orm as they were to put against Black Manta.

Sci-Fi Movies To Look Forward To In 2023!

Malaysian police have confirmed that the decomposed body found at a construction site in Bangsar is that of Jordan Michael John Johnson-Doyle, a 25-year-old British software engineer who had been reported missing since 2 June.

The discovery was made during a search operation on 4 June, at a partially completed condominium along Lorong Maarof. The search was initiated after Johnson-Doyle&rsquo;s movements were traced to the area. Over 30 officers took part in combing the site, and at approximately 5pm, a body was found face-down in a partially submerged lift shaft at one of the still-under-construction blocks.
Tattoo Identification and Autopsy Results

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa confirmed that the body had been positively identified by Johnson-Doyle&rsquo;s uncle, based on a distinctive tattoo. A post-mortem conducted at University Malaya Medical Centre revealed that the cause of death was a chest injury sustained from a fall from height.
&ldquo;There were no signs of foul play or criminal elements at the scene,&rdquo; said Rusdi. &ldquo;The case has been classified as a sudden death.&rdquo;
The body, which was discovered with most of its clothing removed, was recovered at around 9.30pm on the day of the search and taken for forensic examination.
Last Known Movements Before Disappearance

Johnson-Doyle had been on a solo backpacking trip across Southeast Asia while working remotely for a United States-based tech company. He had arrived in Malaysia from Vietnam on 17 May and was believed to be staying at Robertson Residences in Bukit Bintang during his time in Kuala Lumpur.
His last known contact was on the night of 27 May, when he was seen attending a quiz night at Healy Mac&rsquo;s Irish Bar in Bangsar. He had sent a photograph from the bar to a friend, but after that, his phone went silent and his social media activity abruptly stopped. Concerned family members, unable to reach him, reported his disappearance to the authorities.
Staff at the bar confirmed his attendance that evening, but were unable to provide further details about his departure or movements afterward.
Public Urged Not to Speculate

Body Found At Bangsar Construction Site Confirmed To Be Missing British Man

Singapore will be acquiring two plots of land currently owned by the Malaysian government as part of its ambitious redevelopment plan for the Woodlands Checkpoint &mdash; one of the busiest land border crossings in the world. The move, which aims to address persistent traffic congestion and improve cross-border travel efficiency, was formally gazetted on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.
In a joint statement, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) confirmed that the acquisition, involving a total of 0.79 hectares of unused, vegetated land, forms a central part of the broader phased expansion. The parcels are located near the core of the proposed redevelopment zone and are slightly larger than a football field in total area.
Both Singapore and Malaysia have emphasised ongoing cooperation, with the authorities stating, &ldquo;We will continue our strong partnership with the Malaysian government to strengthen connectivity and people-to-people links.&rdquo;
A Cross-Border Congestion Crisis

Future Phases: In-Car Clearance and More Automation

The ICA added that it will continue to invest in technological advancements to balance secure border management with seamless cross-border travel and trade.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
Despite the sensitivities involved in acquiring land owned by a neighbouring government, the process has been described as cooperative and mutually beneficial. Singapore has reassured that all negotiations and procedures are being conducted with full transparency and close coordination with the Malaysian government.

A fatal accident involving a Taiwanese man who fell onto the Light Rail Transit (LRT) tracks at Pusat Bandar Puchong has prompted renewed scrutiny over safety standards at Malaysia&rsquo;s public transport hubs. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has since instructed Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the LRT system operator, to accelerate the installation of platform screen doors across all LRT stations to prevent similar tragedies.
Evening Commute Turns Tragic

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 6.05pm and swiftly deployed a team from the Subang Jaya fire station.
According to Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, the man was found unconscious beneath the train tracks and was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial confusion surrounded his identity and the circumstances of the incident, but authorities later confirmed his nationality and retrieved his passport from the scene.
CCTV Footage Points to Accident

Transport Minister Loke, speaking at a press conference, confirmed that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the incident unfolding, and that there were no indications of foul play.
&ldquo;A report was presented by Prasarana yesterday, and it was an accident whereby the person may not have been aware about the platform,&rdquo; he stated. &ldquo;Let the police do their investigation. The CCTV recording will be shared with the police so they can conduct a detailed probe.&rdquo;
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed to coordinate with the Taiwanese embassy to assist in notifying and supporting the victim&rsquo;s next of kin.
Safety Barriers Now a Priority

&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve asked Prasarana to make the necessary arrangements. They are currently in the planning stage and we hope to push this initiative forward,&rdquo; Loke said, noting that the installation process will require substantial financial support.
&ldquo;To retrofit older stations with these doors will incur a huge cost and we will need additional budgets,&rdquo; he acknowledged. Nevertheless, the minister emphasised that improving commuter safety must remain a national priority.

The main event kicks off 12 and 13 July at The Pickle Grounds, One World Hotel, with Mixed Doubles and Men&rsquo;s Doubles categories open to Novice-level players (defined as a DUPR rating below 3.25). Each of the five participating universities will send six teams per category, turning the weekend into a showdown of pride, skill, and hopefully not too many unforced errors.

What began as an ordinary late-night drive through the streets of George Town turned into a terrifying ordeal for a young woman, after a confrontation on the road allegedly escalated into a violent and humiliating assault involving a firearm. The alleged assailant? A man bearing the prestigious title of &lsquo;Datuk Seri&rsquo;.
The shocking incident, which unfolded in the early hours of 1 June, has not only sparked public outrage but also raised troubling questions about the ease with which influential individuals in Malaysia obtain and wield firearms &mdash; sometimes, quite literally, against unarmed members of the public.
Pistol Allegedly Shoved Into Victim&rsquo;s Mouth

He then allegedly pistol-whipped her, using the grip of the firearm to strike her face, causing severe injuries. The suspect also reportedly punched her repeatedly in the face using both the weapon and his bare hands. The victim sustained a broken nose and bruising around her left eye as a result of the attack.
Following the incident, she received emergency treatment at Penang General Hospital before filing a formal complaint with the Northeast District Police at 5.57pm the same day.
Suspect Turns Himself In, Firearm and Licence Confiscated

Northeast District Police Chief, ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad, confirmed the details in an official statement. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon, and Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960, which prohibits the use or possession of firearms while intoxicated.
