Typically many of us associate Grab with an e-hailing platform and a food delivery platform for many. Lately, they have been under the limelight for quite a few reasons from expensive ride fares and more recently their action of terminating one of their riders.
The backstory was that the delivery rider went viral on social media after he confronted two Singaporeans who were allegedly filling RON95 petrol in their vehicle. The video was initially shared on TikTok under the name @matkibot and stated that due to his video, his account was suspended by the e-hailing app.

The 44-year-old stated that Grab had suspended him around 6pm and he had immediately contacted Grab&rsquo;s customer service for assistance and said he&rsquo;ll be contacted by someone from the upper management within 24 hours. After around 20 minutes, he received a call from Grab and stated that someone reported that he had pulled out a screwdriver in self-defence while arguing with the Singaporean men. They also stated that there is CCTV footage as proof of the incident.

Despite what Grab said, he took a firm stance stating he was in the right and is innocent. The action of the two Singaporean men had in fact jeopardized his livelihood as Grab Deliveries were his sole income source.
The rider who hails from Seremban is currently living in Johor Bahru solely to make GrabFood deliveries. In the video, he also mentioned that he made RM100 in deliveries and sent RM50 over to his wife and children to help cover their meals.
&ldquo;That&rsquo;s how it is in Malaysia. It&rsquo;s okay, I&rsquo;m not defeated, not afraid, in the end, we will all die, that&rsquo;s the fate of Malaysians,&rdquo; he said in the now deleted video.
Grab Issues An Apology To The Rider
Following the controversy, the issue has gained a lot of attention on social media and many netizens called out Grab for &ldquo;not being fair&rdquo; towards the man. Consequently, Grab Malaysia has now released a statement via their official Twitter page about the incident.

They stated that they have placed a temporary suspension on his account (on 16 June) due to a series of reports linked to public safety after the delivery partner was entangled in the incident between the Singaporean men. Grab has since made an investigation over the incident and later revealed that the company has reinstated the rider&rsquo;s account.
Netizens Displeased With How Grab Treated The Incident
Typically, Malaysians were definitely not impressed at Grab as their &ldquo;official statement&rdquo; was just a mere Instagram story-styled post. The situation indeed sparked an outcry among netizens and many had threatened to boycott the application.

Trust us when we say this, the comments section kept going as how many continued to complain about how Grab handles their issues. Plus, for a company that&rsquo;s this big and that&rsquo;s listed on NASDAQ, the sense of professionalism isn&rsquo;t at par.
Perhaps it's time for Grab to reevaluate their Public Relations team and how they handle these types of situations. As for our Singaporean friends, a friendly reminder to fill up RON97 petrol only when you&rsquo;re in the country as our RON95 petrol is only for us Malaysians as it has already been subsidized by the government.

Singapore has been ranked the <a href="https://happy-city-index.com/">third happiest city in the world</a> for 2025, following Copenhagen and Zurich, according to the latest Happy City Index by the London-based Institute for the Quality of Life. The annual study evaluates 250 cities across 82 indicators covering six themes: Citizens, Governance, Environment, Economy, Health, and Mobility.

Praised as a &ldquo;city-state unlike any other,&rdquo; the index commended Singapore for its economic strength, effective governance, and urban innovation. With a score of 979 points, Singapore was identified as one of the institute&rsquo;s so-called &ldquo;Gold Cities&rdquo; &mdash; a label given to urban centres offering consistently high standards of living.
Education and innovation were named as key pillars of the city&rsquo;s success, with local universities ranked among the top 50 globally and a remarkable 7.37 patents granted per 10,000 residents, highlighting a &ldquo;steady pipeline&rdquo; of new ideas. Singapore also enjoys high digital literacy, with 55 per cent of citizens possessing digital skills and over 63 per cent fluent in a foreign language &mdash; a reflection of its global connectivity.

Mobility and public safety also contributed to Singapore&rsquo;s high standing. The session, attended by representatives from the Selangor Health Department, Economic Planning Unit, district health offices, and local councils, was convened to discuss the prospect of a complete ban on vape sales in the state.

&ldquo;This measure is in line with national legislation and reflects Selangor&rsquo;s commitment to safeguard public health, especially that of our younger generation,&rdquo; she said in an official statement.
The state&rsquo;s decision follows growing public concern about the visibility of vape marketing, particularly near schools and public areas, which critics say normalises the habit among impressionable youth.
Vaping Among Teen Boys Described as &lsquo;Alarming&rsquo;

She described the figure as &ldquo;deeply alarming&rdquo; and warned that it signalled a dangerous trend that, if left unaddressed, could have long-term public health implications.
&ldquo;These statistics are not just numbers; they represent thousands of young lives potentially heading down a path of addiction and health problems,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;We cannot afford to be passive. The time to act is now.&rdquo;
Online Sales Remain a Key Regulatory Challenge

These diverse approaches have sparked debate, particularly among industry players who argue that state-level bans conflict with the regulatory framework established by Act 852, which was intended to manage, not prohibit, the vape industry under federal law.
Call for Collective Responsibility
Despite the legal nuances, Selangor is calling for widespread support to ensure the success of its anti-vape campaign. Jamaliah said that the cooperation of parents, schools, healthcare professionals, and civil society organisations is vital to changing the tide of vape use among teens.
&ldquo;We welcome the active involvement of stakeholders at all levels&mdash;state, federal, and grassroots&mdash;to ensure these measures are effective and enduring,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This is not just a government effort. It must be a collective societal responsibility.&rdquo;
The state government maintains that its actions are motivated not by political expediency but by a genuine concern for the well-being of future generations.
