Whether it's a local production or an international blockbuster, Malaysians have an enduring love for movies as a means of leisure and entertainment. However, when we discover that one of our own homegrown films has been banned, it inevitably leaves us both astonished and curious about the reasons behind such a decision.
Indie Film Mentega Terbang Gets Banned In Malaysia

Recently, the Malaysian government officially imposed a ban on an independent local film titled 'Mentega Terbang,' preventing its screening in the country.
Dated on August 23, this prohibition was enacted through the Government Gazette as the Film Censorship (Prohibition) Order 2023. The order bears the legal signature of our Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and was published on September 1.
This ban aligns with section 26 of the Film Censorship Act 2002 (Act 620).
In accordance with the ban, all promotional materials, including exhibition, display, distribution, possession, circulation, and sale of the film as outlined in the Schedule, are strictly prohibited.
Brief Synopsis Of The Movie 
Directed by Khairi Anwar and produced by Tan Meng Kheng, the one-hour forty-four-minute film was released and only shown in private screenings. It was originally released on 28 November 2021 at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival 2021. 
But around March this year, many had criticized and stirred anger due to its alleged scenes which contained elements that opposed Islamic beliefs.

The film revolves around a fifteen-year-old girl named Aisyah who became curious about religion and faith when her mother encountered a major health problem and suffered pancreatic cancer. 
So, every night during dinner, the family will have a discussion about &ldquo;What is life after death?&rdquo; It is an educational and contemplative family project in which the family partakes to dive into a deeper meaning of life after death.

Some religions have a strong belief in Heaven and Hell whereas some believe in rebirth or reincarnation that after death, they may turn into an insect, an animal, or another human. 
As for Aisyah, being aware of the deterioration of her mother&rsquo;s health, she became curious and was urged to delve deeper into the afterlife matter. From there, she exposed herself to various teachings from other religions besides Islamic teachings. At the end of the film, she portrays herself as seeing a butterfly at her mother&rsquo;s tomb, and that eventually makes her believe in reincarnation.

Initially, some reports speculated he could be detained for up to three years, but legal analysts now estimate a potential sentence closer to 18 months &mdash; if found guilty. The tragic discovery of a 39-year-old schoolteacher&rsquo;s decomposed body in her Johor home has sparked widespread concern and prompted authorities to issue a public appeal for assistance in tracing her only known living relative. The woman, who had been absent from work since September last year, is believed to have died alone nearly a month prior to the discovery of her remains.
Alarming Smell Leads to Grim Discovery

On the evening of Thursday, 12 June, residents of Bandar Selesa Jaya in Skudai were alarmed by a strong foul smell emanating from a house in their neighbourhood. After days of tolerating the stench, one concerned neighbour finally lodged a police report at the Nusa Bestari Police Station at approximately 8:06pm.
Responding officers forced entry into the premises, where they were met with a harrowing scene: the lifeless, heavily decomposed body of a woman&mdash;later identified as Lo Kwan Fong, also known as Luo Qunfeng (transliteration)&mdash;was found inside the house.
According to Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan, the Iskandar Puteri District Police Chief, the victim is believed to have died about a month earlier. Early observations ruled out any signs of a struggle or forced entry.
No Foul Play Suspected, But Autopsy Inconclusive

A post-mortem examination was carried out at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) in Johor Bahru by forensic specialists. However, due to the advanced state of decomposition, the medical team was unable to determine the precise cause of death. The body had reportedly deteriorated to such an extent that internal indicators were no longer viable for a conclusive assessment.
&ldquo;The autopsy could not ascertain the cause of death. However, there were no signs of criminal activity, and we have classified this as a case of sudden death,&rdquo; said ACP Kumarasan.
This classification rules out foul play for now, though police have not entirely closed the file, pending any new leads or forensic insights.
Months of Absence and Increasing Isolation

Lo, a teacher at a school in Taman Tunku Aminah, had not reported for work since 24 September 2024. At first, her prolonged absence was met with concern from colleagues, especially given that she had always been punctual and professional. However, those closest to her say she became increasingly withdrawn in the months prior to her disappearance.
In February 2025, her colleagues paid her a visit at home. It was the last confirmed contact anyone had with her. Subsequent efforts to reach her, including further home visits and attempts to call, went unanswered. Neighbours also noted that they had not seen her in a long time, but it wasn&rsquo;t until the strong odour began to spread that authorities were contacted.
She led a quiet, solitary life. According to her colleagues, she was reserved and rarely spoke about her personal affairs. She had reportedly lost both parents before 2010, and it was believed she had no siblings. She never married and had no children.

Students Take Action Before Police Arrive

However, the individuals behind the video were quick to clarify their motivations. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not doing this for attention or praise. According to PDRM, the incident is believed to have taken place in the Ampang Jaya district of Selangor. In response, a disciplinary and criminal investigation has been launched against the officer.

Integrity Issues Plague PDRM Amid Officer Misconduct Scandal

The recent viral misconduct case is just the tip of the iceberg for the PDRM, as broader concerns about internal discipline and professionalism continue to mount. Between January and May 2025, 492 officers were subjected to disciplinary action, with 59 dismissed and 146 suspended, according to Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad, Director of PDRM&rsquo;s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS).
The most common offences were integrity-related violations (333 cases), followed by governance issues (45), drug offences (42), criminal acts (38), syariah breaches (19), and corruption (15). The figures were revealed during Azri&rsquo;s visit to the newly officiated Maran District Police Headquarters, which serves over 115,000 residents.
Public complaints about police misconduct also surged, with 2,637 reports filed in just five months&mdash;1,892 formal complaints and 745 public tips. In response, PDRM launched the Aduan JIPS PDRM app, offering a more transparent platform for the public to report wrongdoing.
End of a Career and a Call for Reform
Azri&rsquo;s remarks came as part of his final tour of duty, with his retirement scheduled for 26 June 2025, marking the end of a 37-year career in the police service. His departure comes at a pivotal moment, as PDRM faces mounting pressure to reform and rebuild trust with the public.
While the current case may involve a single officer, it has highlighted systemic concerns around supervision, discipline, and the need for continued vigilance against abuses of power.
