A few years ago, when the pandemic struck upon us, many were left with retrenchments or losing jobs. Fresh graduates too found it utterly difficult to secure a job for themselves. The economic downturn as a result of the pandemic was truly a moment we witnessed with grief and despair. 
As time passed, fast forward to 2023, we feel much relieved when the economy is slowly recuperating and with that, everything is starting to gain momentum unlike before. So, more outdoor activities, more travelling opportunities, and more events are taking place.&nbsp; 
Recently, there was a career fair called the &lsquo;Malaysia Career and Training Fair&rsquo; (MCTF 2023) which secured its place at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre on 9-10 September. It was a two-day event held from 10am to 7pm.

A huge crowd was seen with over 30,000 jobseekers as well as professionals who made their mark at the exhibition centre. Leading job platforms by SEEK, thanks to the continuous and mutual collaboration between AIC Exhibitions Sdn Bhd and JobStreet for the past two decades making it the nation&rsquo;s largest career fair and a successful one.

The event became more auspicious with the arrival of a special guest, YB Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Youth and Sports who made her prominence by officiating the event as a means to support the country&rsquo;s young talent in their career pursuits as well as providing more opportunities in the development aspect.

She went on with her speech by saying &ldquo;As the government works to reinvigorate and revitalize our economy through policies such as the Ekonomi Madani framework, initiatives like career fairs - which empower our youths to diversify and enhance their skill sets - are a vital part of the picture. Our youths must adopt a culture of lifelong learning, and employers must also create an environment that supports and enables this mindset in their workforce.&rdquo;

The event was then proceeded by Datuk William Ng who is the Organising Chairman of MCTF. He shared his voice on how thrilled and anticipated he was to see job seekers of all ages in varying stages participate and explore new career avenues. He added on with the hope that job seekers could benefit from the available networking sessions and job opportunities.

Despite the shift of numerous employment firms, such as JobStreet, to online platforms to facilitate job seekers in their quest for employment opportunities, Mr. Vic Sithasanan, the Managing Director of JobStreet Malaysia, revealed an intriguing trend. He noted that nearly half of Malaysian job seekers still favour face-to-face interactions with potential employers. This preference enables them to directly engage and communicate with employers regarding job-related inquiries and concerns.

Gloriously, the event was populated with more than 130 exhibitors and employers from leading companies comprising over 10,000 jobs which catered to serve jobseekers&rsquo; needs and wants. With plenty of fish in the sea, they were not left with nothing. Instead, they were flooded with a diverse as well as a multitude of job opportunities to choose from.

Moreover, the public witnessed the official introduction of <a href="https://www.jobstreet.com.my/career-resources/seekmax/">seekMAX.</a> It is the biggest in-app learning content platform which was launched by the Chief Growth Officer, Careers and Connect Platform, Asia, SEEK, Ms. Chook Yuh Yng. 
Based on a recent survey by JobStreet, they found that 62% of the app users were enamoured by its existence enabling them to feel motivated alongside their desire to groom and their willingness for career progression and growth.&nbsp; 
This app is free to use via the JobStreet mobile app so Malaysians need not worry or be concerned about the pricing matter. On top of that, the app is designed for easy access to users with more than 1,100 edutainment videos in English and Malay versions which aims to empower professionals. Therefore, users are welcome to expand their skills and knowledge, elevate their career ladders and align with the current employers&rsquo; expectations in Malaysia. 
To mention, official supportive partners were the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), HRD Corp PLACEMENT CENTRE (HPC), and mynext by TalentCorp Malaysia. 
In general, the meet-and-greet events, networking opportunities, and immediate interviews facilitated fruitful interactions and valuable connections between job seekers, recruiters, and employers, increasing the likelihood of candidates achieving their aspirations of securing their ideal job.

Since Anwar Ibrahim assumed office as Malaysia's 10th Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, opinions about his performance have been mixed. While some view his leadership as adequate, many Malaysians express dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the rising cost of living. The escalating expenses in urban areas have prompted some individuals to consider relocating back to their hometowns.
With several subsidies recently removed, citizens have voiced their frustration over these changes. Compounding this discontent, Anwar has just announced the introduction of additional taxes that will be implemented soon.
New Taxes Coming Our Way

1) Unhealthy Food Tax
The unhealthy food tax aims to reduce the consumption of foods high in fat, sugar, and calories, including fast food, snacks, and baked goods. This initiative responds to the alarming obesity rates in Malaysia, as indicated by the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), which revealed that 54.4 percent of Malaysians are overweight.

<li>Goal: Combat obesity and encourage healthier dietary choices.</li>
<li>Scope: This tax will expand beyond the existing sugar tax on sugary drinks to encompass a broader range of unhealthy foods.</li>

Aligned with Malaysia&rsquo;s commitment to combating climate change, the carbon pricing tax seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the nation&rsquo;s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

<li>Global Context: As of last year, 75 carbon pricing mechanisms have been successfully implemented worldwide, showcasing their effectiveness in reducing emissions while generating revenue for green investments. Dr. Mustazar Mansur from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) explained that this tax will incentivize businesses to adopt greener practices.</li>

3) Inheritance Tax
The proposed inheritance tax aims to curb the accumulation of unproductive wealth within families, addressing wealth inequality across the population.

<li>Goal: Prevent wealth concentration and reduce economic disparity.</li>
<li>Impact: Wealth passed down without contributing to the economy will be taxed, with funds potentially redirected to public services or economic initiatives aimed at levelling wealth disparity.</li>

Targeting high-income individuals, the HVGT focuses on luxury items and services that typically fall within the domain of wealthier Malaysians.

For those who caught his stream, you might recall him visiting a local Ramly burger stall. He not only enjoyed the freshly made burger but also declared that all the food in Malaysia was amazing.

News of the closure quickly spread on social media after a TikTok user posted a video showing that Bob&rsquo;s Burger was no longer at its original spot, sparking speculation among fans about the situation.

Two Harvard students have developed a chilling demo that showcases how smart glasses, combined with facial recognition technology, can instantly expose people&rsquo;s identities, phone numbers, and addresses. The Birth of I-XRAY&nbsp; 
AnhPhu Nguyen, one of the students behind the project, posted a video demonstrating how the tech works, which was later picked up by 404 Media. Dubbed I-XRAY, the system uses the Meta smart glasses to livestream video to Instagram. A computer program then monitors the stream, using AI to identify faces. These images are cross-checked with public databases to extract names, addresses, phone numbers, and even relatives, with the information sent back through a phone app.

Nguyen and Ardayfio stress that the purpose of their project is to raise awareness. They make it clear that I-XRAY was not built for misuse and will not be released. This demonstration is a stark reminder of how smart glasses can be misused. However, there are steps you can take to protect your privacy. Nguyen and Ardayfio point out that some reverse face search engines and people-search databases allow users to opt-out. Even so, completely deleting your digital presence is nearly impossible&mdash;you can only limit the availability of your information.

However, in Malaysia, some individuals misuse this by submitting fake medical certificates, which can lead to serious consequences. For example, a saleswoman was fined RM700 for using a fraudulent MC at a shopping centre in Jalan Cheras.

In the video, Asraff explained how one day he began experiencing severe pain in his salivary glands, similar to mumps, which made him uncomfortable and unable to attend work. His employer insisted he seek medical treatment at a hospital, so he consulted a specialist and received medication.
However, when Asraff asked for a medical certificate (MC) to excuse him from work, the doctor appeared confused and disregarded his request. Hoping for better luck, he visited a pharmacy, but the staff there had the same reaction. "I showed them the prescription the doctor gave me and asked the pharmacist about the MC. He had no idea what I was talking about," Asraff explained.
Japan Doesn&rsquo;t Practice The MC Culture

The following day, when Asraff returned to work, he asked his boss about the proper procedure since he had missed the previous day due to illness. His employer simply told him that all he needed was to take a day off&mdash;no documentation was required since he was genuinely sick.
&ldquo;There is no MC culture in Japan. I remember when I was working near Shah Alam and had a stomach ache, I went to a clinic in the area," he recalled.
He also expressed shock at the experience he had at the clinic, where the doctor didn&rsquo;t even examine him and immediately asked how many days of MC he needed. "The 'selling of MC' culture in Malaysia is really &lsquo;kaw-kaw&rsquo;," Asraff remarked, still surprised at the doctor's question.
In closing, Asraff took the opportunity to remind others, especially those working in Malaysia, not to falsify or purchase medical certificates, as doing so could diminish one's blessings.
Netizens Also Share Their Experience Of Having Their Sick Leaves Unapproved 
Scrolling through the comments section, many netizens echoed similar sentiments, noting that people in Japan tend to be highly disciplined, with little to no instances of employees attempting to forge sick leave. One user shared a personal experience where their HR department denied their sick leave after they caught a cold during the Covid-19 pandemic. Just two days later, the entire office was infected, forcing the company to shut down for a week.
In contrast, some Malaysians were criticized for not being entirely honest when applying for sick leave. Many lamented that this lack of "honesty" was one of the key cultural differences between Malaysia and Japan. During a press conference held on Wednesday, October 2, Loke clarified that the pop-up notification prompting users to create a MyDigital ID account was not an official mandate. "I have ordered for the pop-up to be removed immediately as there has been no decision on it yet by the ministry," he stated, emphasizing his commitment to user convenience.
Loke also revealed that he had met with personnel from MyDigital ID after the Cabinet meeting, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two entities. "We support integration efforts between MyDigital ID and MyJPJ, but it has to be done seamlessly," he affirmed. He further explained that the previously announced October 10 deadline has been cancelled, acknowledging the frustrations expressed by netizens regarding the recent changes.
In addition, he reassured users that the backend integration between the applications will be implemented gradually. "There is no need to worry. You can still use the MyJPJ application after October 10. I have instructed JPJ to allow the public to continue using the application as usual," he assured, noting that the app currently boasts over 10.5 million active users.
