Many Malaysians prefer to live in Johor Bahru (JB) and cross the border to Singapore (SG) to work. This is due to the cheaper housing estate that JB offers which allows them to earn about 3.5 times more while working in Singapore. Thanks to the conversion rates of SG which motivates many Malaysians to cross the border for working purposes. 
But is it crossing the border daily worth waking up in the wee hours? 
On September 21, a Malaysian YouTuber named Chun Weng shared his first-hand experience and documented his journey from JB to SG as a means to explore the daily life of Malaysians commuting from JB to SG for work-related affairs and seek to gain insights about it.

The Start Of His Day

Starting his journey at 4.19am, he felt extremely exhausted from waking up very early since he wasn&rsquo;t used to it. He furthered on by saying that he had no soul since to him it was a heavy sacrifice that he had made for the first time. 
He then brushed his teeth and got himself ready for a Grab ride. It took him about 10 minutes to JB Central and he arrived at 5.50am which cost him RM5. As he arrived, he saw many netizens waving goodbyes to their loved ones and it was a bittersweet moment for Chun Weng to witness. 
The arduous moment came when he noticed a massive crowd who were trying to cross the border to SG. This sounds like &lsquo;Oh My God&rsquo; to him but still, he needed to go through it and there was nowhere to escape when he intended to take on the challenge. 
After thirty minutes of passing the immigration side, the clock ticked 6.30am but Chun Weng didn&rsquo;t stop there as he had to wait and queue for a bus in SG for about 20 to 30 minutes which ate up quite a lot of his time.

With much anticipation of him getting over the huge crowd, another unpleasant moment came when the bus ride that he took made him feel cramped despite it being only RM2.&nbsp;Being aware of the current situation, he decided to check OneMotoring just so he could use the platform to track the traffic along the Causeway and his prediction was true, &ldquo;it was extremely bad&rdquo;, as he said. 
A moment later, he reached the Kanji MRT in Singapore and there was no ample time for him to spare because he had to rush to catch a train to his &lsquo;workplace&rsquo; which is located in Woodlands, and the journey took him about 10 minutes costing RM1.

The clock rang at 7.45am and this is when he settled down and started his work. This is to say the entire journey from JB to SG took him nearly 3.5 hours just to work. 
Comparison Of Prices Between M&rsquo;sia &amp; S&rsquo;pore
It was 12pm and Chun Weng planned to have his lunch so he checked out the food and supermarket prices in SG.

He ordered a plate of chicken rice for $3.50 whereas for Hokkien mee was $4. Comparing the prices, he mentioned that there wasn&rsquo;t much difference at all between the prices from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. 
However, the purchasing power of the Singapore dollar is much higher as compared to Malaysia despite the pay being about the same in each country&rsquo;s own currency. 
To provide an example, he furthered on by claiming that to buy an iPhone, someone only needs to work for a fortnight in Singapore, unlike someone who works in Malaysia and needs one and a half or two months of his salary to purchase it. Malaysians, can you imagine how much of our hard-earned money we could save? It's no wonder that many Malaysians aspire to work in Singapore while also enjoying the advantages of reasonably priced housing in JB.

Chun Weng then hopped to a supermarket to compare the price difference in groceries. For example, if you compare 41 cents of egg in Singapore with 67 cents of egg in Malaysia, there wasn&rsquo;t much difference. He was astonished that the price of Maggi in Singapore was much more affordable than in Malaysia. He expressed, &ldquo;dollar to dollar, it&rsquo;s so much cheaper.&rdquo; Not only that, Starbucks and Mcdonald's also seemed to be more affordable.

He believes that this can be due to the expensive housing estate in which Singaporeans invested much where it was 10% higher as compared to the rest of the world. We know Singapore is an expensive city to live in and this is the lifelong burden that Singaporeans have to bear. 
Therefore, Chun Weng suggested that if you would like to kill two birds with one stone, it is by staying in JB and working in Singapore because you would have a cheaper housing estate as well as a higher salary. 
Interviewing A Seasoned Traveller To Gain Deeper Insights

During his trip, he had an opportunity to converse with Ash who has been a seasoned cross-border worker for eight years. She shared how the rise of the conversion rate between Singapore and Malaysia has lured many to embrace and accept the cross-border work routine. 
She added on with her statement, &ldquo;I think it makes sense, let&rsquo;s say (if you are) in Malaysia and going to Singapore to look for a job, then the salary will be like SGD 2,000 (RM6,800). The conversion rate is like 3.4x now.&rdquo;
Chun Weng really saluted and respected Ash and others who were willing to cross the border every day to Singapore. She even revealed that she woke up at 4am and had only three hours of sleep. To Chun Weng&rsquo;s notice, her lifestyle shocked him a lot. Ash told him if you do not mind the strenuous exercise, then crossing the border would be a reasonable and appropriate approach. If not, it is best to find a reasonable stay in Singapore, and that will avoid much hassle. 
The End of His Day
It was at 4.40pm and he began to prepare himself to go back home. Despite the tiredness that came earlier around 3pm, he still needs to make his way back to Malaysia.

To him, it wasn&rsquo;t a fun experience to endure as it had been taking a toll on him. He rushed to the bus and then headed to Woodlands checkpost which took him about 15 minutes. Later on, he had to scan his passport and then he had a bus ride to get to the border to in the end reach Malaysia. Overall, it was indeed an uncomfortable travelling experience for him since he had to prepare himself mentally and physically to be fit for the challenge.

A Day In The Life: Malaysian's Commute To Singapore Leaves Him Exhausted!

Two Harvard students have developed a chilling demo that showcases how smart glasses, combined with facial recognition technology, can instantly expose people&rsquo;s identities, phone numbers, and addresses. What makes it even more disturbing is that it relies on existing, widely available tech like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and public databases.
The Birth of I-XRAY&nbsp; 
AnhPhu Nguyen, one of the students behind the project, posted a video demonstrating how the tech works, which was later picked up by 404 Media. Dubbed I-XRAY, the system uses the Meta smart glasses to livestream video to Instagram. A computer program then monitors the stream, using AI to identify faces. These images are cross-checked with public databases to extract names, addresses, phone numbers, and even relatives, with the information sent back through a phone app.

In the demo, Nguyen and his co-creator, Caine Ardayfio, can be seen using the glasses to identify classmates in real-time, uncovering their addresses and the names of their relatives. Even more unnerving, the pair are also shown casually striking up conversations with strangers on public transit, pretending to know them, using information sourced from their tech.
A Disturbing Chain of Technologies&nbsp;

Facial recognition technology has been impressively accurate for a while, and I-XRAY simply chains together multiple existing tools. One key component is PimEyes, an &ldquo;alarmingly accurate&rdquo; face search engine described by The New York Times in 2022. Privacy concerns around this tech have been rising ever since Clearview AI started using facial recognition to assist law enforcement. But what sets Nguyen and Ardayfio&rsquo;s project apart is how seamlessly it pairs with consumer gadgets&mdash;smart glasses that are discreet and widely accessible.
Nguyen and Ardayfio stress that the purpose of their project is to raise awareness. They make it clear that I-XRAY was not built for misuse and will not be released. Instead, their goal is to emphasize that this isn&rsquo;t some futuristic dystopia&mdash;it&rsquo;s happening now. The critical factor enabling this tech? Large language models (LLMs) that can autonomously connect names and faces from enormous data sources.
The Privacy Dilemma of Modern Smart Glasses&nbsp;

Privacy concerns with smart glasses are nothing new. Google Glass faced significant backlash years ago for its ability to record without consent, leading to its eventual failure. But today, people have grown accustomed to being filmed, largely thanks to smartphones, social media influencers, and TikTok.
What&rsquo;s unsettling about the Ray-Ban Meta glasses used in this demo is how they blend in. They look like any regular pair of Ray-Bans. This helps smart glasses blend into everyday life but makes it difficult for others to notice when they&rsquo;re being filmed. While the glasses do have a privacy light that turns on when recording, it's often too subtle to catch in bright daylight or crowded environments.
Meta Responds &amp; Protecting Your Digital Footprint&nbsp;

Meta, for its part, warns against unethical behaviour in its privacy policy for Ray-Bans. The company encourages users to respect others' preferences, suggesting they use clear gestures or voice commands when capturing video or livestreaming. But as with any technology, there&rsquo;s no guarantee everyone will follow the rules. In response to inquiries, Meta&rsquo;s spokesperson Dave Arnold reiterated these guidelines by quoting the company&rsquo;s terms of service.
This demonstration is a stark reminder of how smart glasses can be misused. However, there are steps you can take to protect your privacy. Nguyen and Ardayfio point out that some reverse face search engines and people-search databases allow users to opt-out. Even so, completely deleting your digital presence is nearly impossible&mdash;you can only limit the availability of your information.
Having witnessed the capabilities of these glasses&mdash;and technology as a whole&mdash;it&rsquo;s crucial for us to exercise caution regarding what we share on social media. This is particularly important when disclosing personal details or including common geolocations in our posts. Protecting our privacy has never been more vital, and being mindful of our digital footprint can help safeguard our personal information from unwanted exposure.

For both working adults and students, it's common knowledge that when we fall ill, we&rsquo;re required to submit a medical certificate (MC) as proof from a medical professional that we&rsquo;re unfit for physical activities.
Typically, an MC allows employees to apply for leave and recover at home. However, in Malaysia, some individuals misuse this by submitting fake medical certificates, which can lead to serious consequences. For example, a saleswoman was fined RM700 for using a fraudulent MC at a shopping centre in Jalan Cheras.

Recently, TikTok user Asraff Jeffery (@asraffjeffery) posted a video detailing his experience working in Fukuoka, Japan. In the video, Asraff explained how one day he began experiencing severe pain in his salivary glands, similar to mumps, which made him uncomfortable and unable to attend work. His employer insisted he seek medical treatment at a hospital, so he consulted a specialist and received medication.
However, when Asraff asked for a medical certificate (MC) to excuse him from work, the doctor appeared confused and disregarded his request. Hoping for better luck, he visited a pharmacy, but the staff there had the same reaction. "I showed them the prescription the doctor gave me and asked the pharmacist about the MC. He had no idea what I was talking about," Asraff explained.
Japan Doesn&rsquo;t Practice The MC Culture

The following day, when Asraff returned to work, he asked his boss about the proper procedure since he had missed the previous day due to illness. His employer simply told him that all he needed was to take a day off&mdash;no documentation was required since he was genuinely sick.
&ldquo;There is no MC culture in Japan. I remember when I was working near Shah Alam and had a stomach ache, I went to a clinic in the area," he recalled.
He also expressed shock at the experience he had at the clinic, where the doctor didn&rsquo;t even examine him and immediately asked how many days of MC he needed. "The 'selling of MC' culture in Malaysia is really &lsquo;kaw-kaw&rsquo;," Asraff remarked, still surprised at the doctor's question.
In closing, Asraff took the opportunity to remind others, especially those working in Malaysia, not to falsify or purchase medical certificates, as doing so could diminish one's blessings.
Netizens Also Share Their Experience Of Having Their Sick Leaves Unapproved 
Scrolling through the comments section, many netizens echoed similar sentiments, noting that people in Japan tend to be highly disciplined, with little to no instances of employees attempting to forge sick leave. One user shared a personal experience where their HR department denied their sick leave after they caught a cold during the Covid-19 pandemic. Just two days later, the entire office was infected, forcing the company to shut down for a week.
In contrast, some Malaysians were criticized for not being entirely honest when applying for sick leave. Many lamented that this lack of "honesty" was one of the key cultural differences between Malaysia and Japan. Several comments pointed out the stark contrast in attitudes, with some even asking which clinic was selling fake MC slips, highlighting the issue of forgery in Malaysia.

If you're tempted to get a fake MC just to take a day off, remember that falsifying medical certificates is illegal. Offenders can be prosecuted under Section 420 of the Penal Code, facing up to 10 years in prison, whipping, and fines. On Monday, Malaysians were informed that anyone wishing to access the MyJPJ App would need to register for the new MyDigital ID.

Users who recently accessed their MyJPJ app received a notification indicating that, starting October 10, they will need to create a MyDigital ID account to log in. The MyDigital ID app aims to serve as a secure authentication method, simplifying access to various government digital services while bolstering the security of online transactions, as the country moves towards greater digitalization across multiple sectors.
Plus, the MyDigital ID can also be used for a variety of things:

<li>Conduct consultations with doctors and obtain prescriptions for medicines online through access to health records.</li>
<li>Perform real estate rental transactions.</li>
<li>Vote online.</li>

MyDigital ID Requirements Revoked

In a swift response just two days after the announcement, Transport Minister Anthony Loke addressed concerns regarding the MyJPJ application, assuring users that they can continue utilizing the app without the necessity of logging in with a MyDigital ID account, even beyond the previously set deadline of October 10.
During a press conference held on Wednesday, October 2, Loke clarified that the pop-up notification prompting users to create a MyDigital ID account was not an official mandate. "I have ordered for the pop-up to be removed immediately as there has been no decision on it yet by the ministry," he stated, emphasizing his commitment to user convenience.
Loke also revealed that he had met with personnel from MyDigital ID after the Cabinet meeting, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two entities. "We support integration efforts between MyDigital ID and MyJPJ, but it has to be done seamlessly," he affirmed. He further explained that the previously announced October 10 deadline has been cancelled, acknowledging the frustrations expressed by netizens regarding the recent changes.
In addition, he reassured users that the backend integration between the applications will be implemented gradually. "There is no need to worry. You can still use the MyJPJ application after October 10. I have instructed JPJ to allow the public to continue using the application as usual," he assured, noting that the app currently boasts over 10.5 million active users.
Why The Sudden Change?

This announcement follows a wave of frustration among Malaysians on social media, who voiced their concerns about the requirement to install the MyDigital ID app for accessing MyJPJ. This move will offer local businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the ability to harness Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and AI-driven solutions to modernize their operations, migrate critical workloads, and elevate their competitiveness on a global scale.
The new cloud region in Malaysia will provide access to over 150 cutting-edge services, such as Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, and OCI Generative AI Agents. Additionally, the facility will include advanced capabilities like the OCI Supercluster&mdash;touted as the world&rsquo;s largest AI supercomputer in the cloud&mdash;featuring up to 131,072 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, capable of delivering an astounding 2.4 ZettaFLOPS of AI computing power. These offerings will enable Malaysian businesses to innovate using AI, data analytics, and modern applications, accelerating their growth in an increasingly digital economy.

Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, welcomed Oracle&rsquo;s decision, noting that the investment reinforces Malaysia&rsquo;s status as a leading digital investment destination in Southeast Asia.
"This significant investment by Oracle empowers Malaysian enterprises with the most innovative AI and cloud technologies, enhancing their global competitiveness while contributing to our national goals under the New Industrial Master Plan," Zafrul remarked.
&nbsp;The New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) sets ambitious targets for the nation, including the creation of 3,000 smart factories by 2030, and Oracle&rsquo;s cloud region is poised to play a key role in achieving these objectives. Additionally, the investment also highlights Malaysia&rsquo;s readiness to support large-scale digital infrastructure projects, with Oracle selecting the country for its regional expansion due to its favourable regulatory environment and growing technological landscape. Garrett Ilg, Oracle&rsquo;s executive vice president for Japan and Asia Pacific, emphasized the unique growth opportunities Malaysia presents. "This multi-billion-dollar investment affirms our commitment to Malaysia as a strategic gateway for cloud infrastructure in the region," Ilg stated, noting that the public cloud region will serve as a foundation for Malaysia to emerge as a technological leader in Southeast Asia.

Oracle Announces US$6.5 Billion Investment To Establish Cloud Region And Boost AI Services In Malaysia

Remember the excitement of field trips during our school days? Unfortunately, in Thailand, that joy turned to tragedy when a school bus accident claimed the lives of 22 students and three teachers, according to local authorities.
The bus was transporting students and teachers from Wat Khao Praya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani province to Bangkok when it crashed and caught fire on Phahon Yothin Road at around 12:30 PM yesterday, October 1.
The incident occurred while the bus was on its way to an exhibition at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand in Nonthaburi, following an earlier visit to History Park in Ayutthaya.

The bus was the second in a convoy of three.
The Bangkok Post has reported the fatalities, although the identities of those who lost their lives have not yet been officially disclosed. There were 38 students and six teachers on board, with the students ranging from kindergarten to Mathayom 3, equivalent to fourth grade in Thailand.
Fire Caused After Bus Crashed Into A Barrier

A rescuer at the scene reported that the bus caught fire after one of its tyres burst while travelling on the highway, leading to a collision with a barrier. The flames quickly engulfed the vehicle, resulting in extensive damage.&nbsp;
Photos released by the Thailand Fire &amp; Rescue Department showed completely charred seats and a severely damaged exterior. Firefighters were dispatched to aid the survivors, many of whom were in a state of shock.
Driver Initially Fled The Scene &amp; Investigations Are Ongoing
In a statement from acting national police chief Pol Lt Gen Kittirat Phunphet, it was confirmed that the bus driver, who had turned off his mobile phone, surrendered at a police station after fleeing to Ang Thong. He is currently being held at Khu Khot police station in Pathum Thani.&nbsp;
The driver, identified by authorities as Saman Chanput, has been charged with reckless driving resulting in death and injury, failing to assist others, and neglecting to report the accident. During questioning, he explained that he was driving normally until the bus lost balance due to a problem with the front right tyre. This caused it to collide with another vehicle and scrape against a concrete highway barrier, which ignited sparks that led to the fire.&nbsp;
Regarding his decision to flee, he admitted that panic took over. Before running away, he attempted to retrieve a fire extinguisher from another bus on the same trip but was unable to extinguish the flames.

The police are currently investigating whether the bus company adhered to all safety regulations. Preliminary reports suggest that the gas-powered bus may have had a leak. Authorities from both the police and the Department of Land Transport plan to determine if the gas installation was original or a later modification and whether it complied with safety standards.&nbsp;
In a statement to Thai PBS, the bus company owner, Songwit Chinnaboot, claimed that the bus underwent safety inspections twice a year as mandated and that the gas cylinders had passed all safety tests. He also expressed his intention to provide compensation to the victim&rsquo;s families to the best of his ability.&nbsp;
At present, three students remain hospitalized, with two in serious condition. Among them, a 7-year-old girl has sustained burns to her face, and surgeons are working diligently to preserve her eyesight.

In a heartfelt response to the tragic bus fire that claimed the lives of 22 students and three teachers, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences to the bereaved families and promised that the government would cover medical expenses and provide financial aid to both victims and their families.
"I am aware of the bus fire incident from Uthai Thani, which was carrying students on a field trip to Bangkok and resulted in an accident on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, causing fatalities and injuries," she stated.
During a visit to Pat Rangsit Hospital, where she met with survivors, she was visibly moved by their stories, reinforcing her commitment to supporting those affected by this tragedy.
