Tragically, one Malaysian working in Singapore was dealt a devastating blow when a severe bacterial infection led to sepsis, causing her to lose all four limbs and her life savings.
A Common Fever Ended Up Leading To Sepsis

According to Sin Chew, the 37-year-old beautician began feeling unwell in October last year, experiencing a fever, stomachache, and general weakness. Despite seeking medical attention, her condition did not improve. Initially thinking it was food poisoning, she was prescribed medication. However, during a follow-up visit, the doctor identified more serious symptoms and sent her to the emergency room, where she subsequently lost consciousness.
When the woman from Ipoh regained consciousness in the hospital, she found herself surrounded by her family, who had rushed to her side. Doctors informed her of her critical condition, advising her family to prepare for the worst. She was diagnosed with a worsening bacterial infection. Her heart was weak, and her brain was not receiving enough oxygen, putting her at risk of brain death.
The Need To Put Her Health Forward With A Difficult Decision

The doctor recommended an injection to ensure blood flow to her heart and maintain proper brain function. However, this treatment came with a significant risk: it could result in the loss of some body parts. Initially, her family believed only her fingers might need to be amputated. However, her condition worsened, and her limbs began to turn black, becoming heavy and difficult to control as the infection spread up her arms and legs.

During this period, the doctors delivered the grim news that her body's cells had perished due to the bacterial infection, resulting in sepsis. The only viable option to save her life was to undergo amputation.
Medical Expenses Were Extremely Costly And Drained Her Savings
After extensive discussions with her family and shedding tears throughout, she ultimately made the difficult decision to undergo hand amputation on November 29, 2023, followed by leg amputation on December 19, 2023. Regrettably, the exorbitant cost of the procedures drained her life savings, totalling RM1.04 million in medical and follow-up expenses.
She elaborated further, revealing that her condition and loss of income have left her entirely dependent on her sister for care. Additionally, during her illness, doctors discovered a perforation in her colon, necessitating the attachment of a stoma bag to her abdomen to aid in defecation.

Presently, she has begun using prosthetic legs, which come with a hefty price tag of over RM52,000. However, she cannot afford prosthetics for her hands at this time, which are estimated to cost around RM48,800. She mentioned that she is currently paying installments for her legs and relies solely on them for now.
According to the infectious disease specialist at Farrer Park Hospital, cases of bacterial infections rarely result in amputation, making her situation an extreme one. The doctor speculated that this drastic outcome may stem from either a pre-existing illness or delayed medical intervention.
Hopes To Stay In Singapore For Treatment

Maintaining a positive outlook, she looks forward to resuming work once she has recovered fully and hopes to offer guidance to others who may face similar challenges in the future. Additionally, she expressed heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support of her family and friends during difficult times. She also extended gratitude to her former employer, a beauty salon, for assisting with a portion of her medical expenses, enabling her to focus on her recovery without financial worries.

The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has announced this new requirement as part of a broader global rollout, which began in November 2023 and will extend to all visa-exempt countries by April 2025.
The ETA is designed to enhance border security and streamline the immigration process, aligning with similar measures implemented by countries like the US and Australia. However, if you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.
It&rsquo;s crucial to understand that the ETA is not considered as a visa. Malaysians planning to reside in the UK for more than six months, such as for work or study, will still need to apply for a visa. However, it&rsquo;s noted that those who already hold a valid UK visa do not need to obtain an ETA. Otter Attacks Jogger At Kinabalu Park
In a surprising turn of events, a woman was attacked by a group of otters at a recreational park in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu on the morning of September 11.
The victim, Mariasella Harun, was on her usual morning jog at Perdana Park around 6:10 a.m. when the incident occurred. After completing 2 km, she noticed something emerging from a drain and initially thought it was a cat. However, to her shock, an otter suddenly leapt at her and bit her, soon followed by a group of otters surrounding and attacking her.

Mariasella recounted how she struggled for what felt like five agonising minutes, trying to fend off the animals until other joggers rushed to help.
She sustained multiple injuries to her arms, legs, and head, and was immediately taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she received antibacterial treatment and a rabies vaccine. Doctors advised hospitalization for further observation, though they couldn&rsquo;t stitch her wounds yet due to the risk of complications from the bites.
Still recovering and visibly shaken, Mariasella mentioned that while she had spotted otters at the park during previous runs, she never approached them, only taking videos from a distance. She emphasised that she had not provoked the animals and couldn&rsquo;t understand why they attacked her.

Wildlife Department Advises Public To Stay Away From The Otters

After the attack, Sabah Wildlife Department director Roland Niun noted that this was the first reported otter attack in the area, calling the aggressive behaviour highly unusual for these typically harmless creatures. It&rsquo;s believed the otters entered the park through a <a href="https://www.astroawani.com/berita-malaysia/sekumpulan-memerang-mengganas-serang-pengunjung-taman-rekreasi-487399">damaged fence</a> while searching for food. The fence has since been repaired, but the public is encouraged to report any sightings of otters in the park. If the animals return, authorities will need to capture and relocate them for safety reasons.
As a precaution, the public is urged not to feed, approach, or antagonize the otters in any way. Otters are protected under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 and are commonly found in rivers and lakes.

Akon Announces Malaysia Concert As Part Of His ‘The Superfan Tour’!

If you&rsquo;re a frequent flyer, you&rsquo;re likely familiar with the routine: passengers must undergo a security check at the airport before proceeding to their terminals. Additionally, airline staff scan boarding passes at the gate before allowing passengers to board.
In an unusual twist, a woman recently managed to board a flight at KLIA without any identification, including a flight ticket, leading to a significant flight delay.
How Did The Woman Manage To Do So?

Over the weekend, Chinese travel blogger Zhu recounted an incident that occurred on August 29th at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). According to Zhu, her Xiamen Airlines flight to China was delayed by four hours due to a passenger boarding the plane without a ticket.
Zhu recalled that after settling into her seat, she noticed a woman wandering around the aircraft, disrupting other passengers who were trying to reach their seats and stow their belongings. Assuming the woman was simply having difficulty finding her seat, a flight attendant asked to see her boarding pass to provide assistance.
To their astonishment, the woman admitted she didn&rsquo;t have a ticket for the flight and, therefore, had no assigned seat. &ldquo;A few moments later, there was an announcement asking all passengers to disembark and return to the terminal for security checks,&rdquo; Zhu wrote. &ldquo;Everyone was understandably upset and wondered what was happening.&rdquo; Zhu added that airline staff had to re-check each passenger's boarding pass in alphabetical order before allowing them to board again.

In the comments section, the blogger noted that KLIA security questioned the passenger, who was notably without any luggage. This raised concerns about how she managed to bypass security, as all passengers are required to present their tickets before boarding.
It was speculated that the woman might have been a passenger from the previous flight, which was from Xiamen to Kuala Lumpur. The blogger mentioned that they had seen passengers from that flight disembark before they boarded, leading to the perplexing question of why the woman would remain on the plane and then attempt to fly back to Xiamen.
Following the incident, the flight eventually departed but faced a four-hour delay, arriving at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport at 9:30 p.m. instead of the scheduled 6:55 p.m. Sin Chew Daily reported that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) is investigating the matter, and there have been no further updates yet.
If you find yourself facing a flight delay of over 5 hours, recent regulations from the transport ministry mandate that airlines must provide full refunds. This new requirement comes as part of the updates to the Malaysian Aviation Commission&rsquo;s (Mavcom) Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code (MACPC) 2016.
