Following the conclusion of the Olympics badminton event, many Malaysians have been commending our athletes for their valiant efforts to secure a medal for the nation.
Although we did not achieve the results we had hoped for, we still brought home two bronze medals. These were won by Men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia and Men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. In other events, Women's doubles pair Pearly and Thinaah secured a respectable fourth place after a tough match against Japan's Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida. Meanwhile, Mixed doubles pair Tang Jie and Ee Wei reached the quarterfinals before being bested by South Korea's Kim Won Ho and Jeong Na Eun, and Goh Jin Wei was unfortunately knocked out in the group stages, unable to advance further.

Despite the results, many Malaysians are proud of their athletes' hard work and wish them a strong comeback in their next tournaments, including the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria has announced his resignation as president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) amid controversy surrounding the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"Given the responses I've seen, I am just going to say that I will be resigning from BAM soon, which many people are aware of," Norza said in an interview with The Star. "I hope the next leader can improve the state of badminton affairs in our country."
Norza had previously indicated his intention to step down after the Olympic Games. He emphasized that his roles in both OCM and BAM were voluntary. "I do not receive any salary or allowances from either organization. My goal has always been to bring glory and pride to our nation," he stated.
Saying Attack On His Family Was Highly Unnecessary
Alongside his decision to step down after the Olympics, he conveyed his distress over the recent scrutiny faced by his family, stating that the attacks were unwarranted and they should not have had to endure such criticism.

Addressing the recent controversy, Norza explained that his family's presence at the Paris Olympics was due to a personal quota allocation, separate from the national team's accreditation. The issue arose after a social media user posted a photo on X showing what appeared to be Norza&rsquo;s wife and son wearing accreditation cards at one of the Olympic matches.
The uproar started when the OCM president was accused of prioritizing his family&rsquo;s accreditation over that of the badminton athletes' team members for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

Since many players are under BAM, athletes like Zii Jia and Jin Wei were looked at as individual players as they had previously left BAM to turn professional and did not receive sufficient accreditation to bring their teams to Paris. Consequently, Jin Wei had to coordinate with her coach Nova Armada by phone and seek support from Rexy Mainaky, the director of coaching at the Malaysian Badminton Academy (ABM) and assistant to the national men&rsquo;s doubles coach, during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Meanwhile, Zii Jia had to personally finance his team&rsquo;s trip to the Olympics, after requesting Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin&rsquo;s assistance to secure two additional accreditation cards for his physiotherapist and personal sparring partner.
Before announcing his decision to step down, the OCM clarified that as OCM president, he was granted a special quota to invite guests without impacting the athlete and official allocations. He also noted that each president and secretary-general of the participating Olympic councils has the right to bring guests to VIP seating areas at events. Furthermore, he emphasized that the expenses for bringing his family were covered entirely from his own funds, not from government resources.
At present, the exact date of his resignation remains uncertain, and there is also a lack of clarity about who will succeed him as BAM president to guide and elevate the players in the future.

This digital permit will be mandatory for short-term visitors who do not currently hold a UK visa or immigration status. The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has announced this new requirement as part of a broader global rollout, which began in November 2023 and will extend to all visa-exempt countries by April 2025.
The ETA is designed to enhance border security and streamline the immigration process, aligning with similar measures implemented by countries like the US and Australia. This initiative aims to create a more efficient, digital immigration system that is both quicker and more secure for the millions of travellers who enter the UK each year.
Will Be Introduced In Stages

Malaysians will be able to apply for the ETA starting November 27, 2024. The application process is straightforward and can be completed via the UK ETA app or on the GOV.UK website. The application is generally processed within three working days, though using the app may result in a faster decision. The ETA costs &pound;10 (~RM56) and is valid for two years, allowing for multiple entries into the UK with stays of up to six months at a time. However, if you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.
It&rsquo;s crucial to understand that the ETA is not considered as a visa. Malaysians planning to reside in the UK for more than six months, such as for work or study, will still need to apply for a visa. However, it&rsquo;s noted that those who already hold a valid UK visa do not need to obtain an ETA. The British High Commission has clarified that while the application and approval process is managed by UK Visas and Immigration, their office in Kuala Lumpur is not involved in this process.

Otter Attacks Jogger At Kinabalu Park
In a surprising turn of events, a woman was attacked by a group of otters at a recreational park in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu on the morning of September 11.
The victim, Mariasella Harun, was on her usual morning jog at Perdana Park around 6:10 a.m. when the incident occurred. After completing 2 km, she noticed something emerging from a drain and initially thought it was a cat. However, to her shock, an otter suddenly leapt at her and bit her, soon followed by a group of otters surrounding and attacking her.

Mariasella recounted how she struggled for what felt like five agonising minutes, trying to fend off the animals until other joggers rushed to help.
She sustained multiple injuries to her arms, legs, and head, and was immediately taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she received antibacterial treatment and a rabies vaccine. Doctors advised hospitalization for further observation, though they couldn&rsquo;t stitch her wounds yet due to the risk of complications from the bites.
Still recovering and visibly shaken, Mariasella mentioned that while she had spotted otters at the park during previous runs, she never approached them, only taking videos from a distance. She emphasised that she had not provoked the animals and couldn&rsquo;t understand why they attacked her.

Wildlife Department Advises Public To Stay Away From The Otters

After the attack, Sabah Wildlife Department director Roland Niun noted that this was the first reported otter attack in the area, calling the aggressive behaviour highly unusual for these typically harmless creatures. A team has been sent to investigate, with Niun explaining that otters can be fiercely protective of their pups and are known to be territorial.
It&rsquo;s believed the otters entered the park through a <a href="https://www.astroawani.com/berita-malaysia/sekumpulan-memerang-mengganas-serang-pengunjung-taman-rekreasi-487399">damaged fence</a> while searching for food. The fence has since been repaired, but the public is encouraged to report any sightings of otters in the park. If the animals return, authorities will need to capture and relocate them for safety reasons.
As a precaution, the public is urged not to feed, approach, or antagonize the otters in any way. Otters are protected under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 and are commonly found in rivers and lakes.

Akon Announces Malaysia Concert As Part Of His ‘The Superfan Tour’!

If you&rsquo;re a frequent flyer, you&rsquo;re likely familiar with the routine: passengers must undergo a security check at the airport before proceeding to their terminals. Additionally, airline staff scan boarding passes at the gate before allowing passengers to board.
In an unusual twist, a woman recently managed to board a flight at KLIA without any identification, including a flight ticket, leading to a significant flight delay.
How Did The Woman Manage To Do So?

Over the weekend, Chinese travel blogger Zhu recounted an incident that occurred on August 29th at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). According to Zhu, her Xiamen Airlines flight to China was delayed by four hours due to a passenger boarding the plane without a ticket.
Zhu recalled that after settling into her seat, she noticed a woman wandering around the aircraft, disrupting other passengers who were trying to reach their seats and stow their belongings. Assuming the woman was simply having difficulty finding her seat, a flight attendant asked to see her boarding pass to provide assistance.
To their astonishment, the woman admitted she didn&rsquo;t have a ticket for the flight and, therefore, had no assigned seat. &ldquo;A few moments later, there was an announcement asking all passengers to disembark and return to the terminal for security checks,&rdquo; Zhu wrote. &ldquo;Everyone was understandably upset and wondered what was happening.&rdquo; Zhu added that airline staff had to re-check each passenger's boarding pass in alphabetical order before allowing them to board again.

In the comments section, the blogger noted that KLIA security questioned the passenger, who was notably without any luggage. This raised concerns about how she managed to bypass security, as all passengers are required to present their tickets before boarding.
It was speculated that the woman might have been a passenger from the previous flight, which was from Xiamen to Kuala Lumpur. The blogger mentioned that they had seen passengers from that flight disembark before they boarded, leading to the perplexing question of why the woman would remain on the plane and then attempt to fly back to Xiamen.
Following the incident, the flight eventually departed but faced a four-hour delay, arriving at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport at 9:30 p.m. instead of the scheduled 6:55 p.m. Sin Chew Daily reported that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) is investigating the matter, and there have been no further updates yet.
If you find yourself facing a flight delay of over 5 hours, recent regulations from the transport ministry mandate that airlines must provide full refunds. This new requirement comes as part of the updates to the Malaysian Aviation Commission&rsquo;s (Mavcom) Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code (MACPC) 2016.
