Does anyone recall the excitement surrounding Elon Musk's electric car company, Tesla Inc.?
Recently, Tesla made its entry into the Malaysian market, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim having an online meeting with Elon Musk to discuss further investments. In February 2023, they reached an agreement allowing Tesla to sell its vehicles assembled abroad in Malaysia without facing import tariffs.

The car company was also exempted from the requirement of having a local partner and the minimum 30% Bumiputera equity rule, allowing Tesla to begin selling its cars just a month after the meeting. There were also discussions about Tesla opening its headquarters and service centre in Selangor, along with sales offices across the country. Additionally, Musk's Starlink was permitted to operate in Malaysia as a foreign-owned entity after the government lifted the 49% ownership ceiling.
However, it appears the government&rsquo;s hopes of securing further investment from Tesla may face a setback, as the company seems to have other plans for its expansion.
Tesla Reportedly Scraps Plans To Set Up Factories In Malaysia

It appears that Tesla Inc. has hit the brakes on its plans to build factories in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, shifting its focus instead to establishing charging stations worldwide, according to the Thai news portal The Nation. Despite pulling out of Southeast Asia, Tesla will continue its plans to build factories in China, the U.S., and Germany.
Reports also indicated that Tesla has laid off its executive team responsible for overseeing the production of its Southeast Asian factories. Under a previously agreed deal with the Malaysian government, Tesla had committed to investing in the development of fast-charging and regular-charging stations across the country.
As the news circulated online, many netizens were quick to criticize the government, highlighting how Anwar went to great lengths to secure Musk&rsquo;s investment by offering various exemptions, only to be caught off guard. Some had anticipated this outcome, citing Musk&rsquo;s unpredictable and unreliable behaviour.
One netizen remarked that Tesla never intended to build a factory in Malaysia due to the small market size for electric vehicles, suggesting that the company is focusing on regions where it can scale more effectively and compete better globally. Others argued that Malaysia should abandon its plans with Tesla and instead open the market to more Chinese EV manufacturers, as Tesla is currently facing stiff competition from the Chinese EV market.

Tengku Zafrul Says Tesla Had Not Committed To Opening A Factory &amp; Only Talked About Investment

Following reports that Tesla had scrapped plans to open a factory in Malaysia, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz clarified that the company never committed to such a project. He explained that his discussions with Elon Musk were aimed at attracting investment, not securing a factory.
"Firstly, the foreign news report is not an official statement from Tesla, but rather quotes from anonymous or unnamed sources. Reporters should verify the authenticity of this news directly with Tesla, as the information did not originate from them.
"Secondly, Miti has never announced that Tesla would open a factory in Malaysia. While we have had discussions with Elon Musk to attract investment, Tesla has never made a commitment to establish a factory here," said Tengku Zafrul.

Zafrul&rsquo;s comments followed reports from a Thai news portal citing unnamed government sources about the cancellation of Tesla's factory plans. He clarified that on July 20, 2023, Tesla and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) issued a joint statement affirming that Tesla&rsquo;s involvement in Malaysia aligns with the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Global Leader initiative launched by MITI.
Tesla is committed to introducing advanced electric vehicles (EVs) to the Malaysian market and investing in a comprehensive network of fast and standard charging stations across strategic locations in the country. Additionally, Tesla plans to establish its headquarters and service centre in Cyberjaya, Selangor.
Tengku Zafrul also explained that the government&rsquo;s BEV Global Leaders initiative aims to strengthen the local EV ecosystem. Requirements for participation include installing at least 50 ultra-fast chargers with capacities exceeding 180 kWh, ensuring 30% of these chargers are open to the public, and collaborating with at least 10 local companies in the EV charging industry.
He emphasized that the initiative is designed to enhance the charging network for EV owners and boost local SME participation in the EV ecosystem. He cited similar successful programs in China, Hong Kong, and Norway, which accelerated the shift to EVs.

"So far, only Tesla has applied and been approved for this initiative, but we welcome other EV manufacturers to join. Claims that Tesla received special treatment are inaccurate; any company can apply," he added.
Zafrul concluded by stating that MITI will continue its efforts to attract high-quality investments into Malaysia, including in the automotive industry, beyond just Tesla.
While the factory plans may be off the table, credit is due for the noticeable improvement in EV infrastructure across the country. With Tesla stations and other brands becoming more accessible, the groundwork for a more sustainable future is being laid.
It might be worth considering an EV for local travel, given its environmental benefits. However, this option is likely more feasible once the economy stabilizes and the cost of living becomes more manageable.

In August, the world was caught off guard by an Mpox outbreak, also known as monkeypox, which made global headlines. Fast forward to the present, and it seems Malaysia will now need to initiate discussions on tackling Mpox, as the virus has officially reached the country.
Malaysia Records First Case Of Mpox For 2024

On September 17, the Ministry of Health (KKM) announced that a new case of Mpox, specifically the clade II variant, had been detected in Malaysia. Director-General of Health Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan revealed that the case was one of 58 suspected Mpox cases referred to the Ministry throughout the year.
The patient, a local man, began experiencing symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and cough on September 11, with a rash appearing the following day. Despite being in isolation, the man had no recent travel history in the 21 days prior to showing symptoms and is currently in stable condition.
&ldquo;Of the 58 suspected Mpox cases referred to the Ministry of Health this year, one (1) case was confirmed positive for Mpox clade II on September 16, 2024. With this, all 10 cases detected in Malaysia since July 26, 2023, have been identified as clade II,&rdquo; the Health Ministry stated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for the second time on August 14, 2024. In response, the Ministry of Health has been actively using various media and social platforms to raise public awareness, promoting preparedness and encouraging better self-care practices.
Individuals at high risk who exhibit Mpox symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility, avoid direct contact with suspected or confirmed cases, and maintain proper hygiene, such as washing hands with soap and water or using disinfectants.
Healthcare professionals are advised to remain alert when treating patients with rashes or blisters, particularly those in high-risk groups. Suspected Mpox cases should be referred to laboratories that offer virus detection testing and reported to the nearest District Health Office (PKD) via the e-notification system for further investigation, prevention, and control efforts.
Case Was Apparently Broke The News On Social Media By A Local Doctor First
Although the Ministry of Health (KKM) is typically the official source for announcements on medical issues in Malaysia, a few days ago, an account claiming to be a doctor shared a post about a patient inquiring about the cost of Mpox testing.
The account, @noki2024, posted two photos allegedly showing the patient's hand and foot, both covered in noticeable bumps. According to the post, the patient had visited a "sauna" and soon after noticed the appearance of rashes.

Starting January 8, 2025, Malaysians travelling to or transiting through the UK will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This digital permit will be mandatory for short-term visitors who do not currently hold a UK visa or immigration status. The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has announced this new requirement as part of a broader global rollout, which began in November 2023 and will extend to all visa-exempt countries by April 2025.
The ETA is designed to enhance border security and streamline the immigration process, aligning with similar measures implemented by countries like the US and Australia. This initiative aims to create a more efficient, digital immigration system that is both quicker and more secure for the millions of travellers who enter the UK each year.
Will Be Introduced In Stages

Malaysians will be able to apply for the ETA starting November 27, 2024. The application process is straightforward and can be completed via the UK ETA app or on the GOV.UK website. The application is generally processed within three working days, though using the app may result in a faster decision. The ETA costs &pound;10 (~RM56) and is valid for two years, allowing for multiple entries into the UK with stays of up to six months at a time. However, if you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.
It&rsquo;s crucial to understand that the ETA is not considered as a visa. Malaysians planning to reside in the UK for more than six months, such as for work or study, will still need to apply for a visa. However, it&rsquo;s noted that those who already hold a valid UK visa do not need to obtain an ETA. The British High Commission has clarified that while the application and approval process is managed by UK Visas and Immigration, their office in Kuala Lumpur is not involved in this process.
As this new requirement comes into effect, it&rsquo;s important for travellers to stay informed and ensure they have the necessary documentation to avoid any disruptions to their plans. Staying updated on these changes and planning ahead will help make your journey to the UK as smooth as possible.

Regarding working hours, he explained that stores operate from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and dismissed claims about the absence of overtime pay, affirming that staff are compensated according to agreements made between the employees and the company.

Otter Attacks Jogger At Kinabalu Park
In a surprising turn of events, a woman was attacked by a group of otters at a recreational park in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu on the morning of September 11.
The victim, Mariasella Harun, was on her usual morning jog at Perdana Park around 6:10 a.m. when the incident occurred. After completing 2 km, she noticed something emerging from a drain and initially thought it was a cat. However, to her shock, an otter suddenly leapt at her and bit her, soon followed by a group of otters surrounding and attacking her.

Mariasella recounted how she struggled for what felt like five agonising minutes, trying to fend off the animals until other joggers rushed to help.
She sustained multiple injuries to her arms, legs, and head, and was immediately taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she received antibacterial treatment and a rabies vaccine. Doctors advised hospitalization for further observation, though they couldn&rsquo;t stitch her wounds yet due to the risk of complications from the bites.
Still recovering and visibly shaken, Mariasella mentioned that while she had spotted otters at the park during previous runs, she never approached them, only taking videos from a distance. She emphasised that she had not provoked the animals and couldn&rsquo;t understand why they attacked her.

Wildlife Department Advises Public To Stay Away From The Otters

After the attack, Sabah Wildlife Department director Roland Niun noted that this was the first reported otter attack in the area, calling the aggressive behaviour highly unusual for these typically harmless creatures. A team has been sent to investigate, with Niun explaining that otters can be fiercely protective of their pups and are known to be territorial.
It&rsquo;s believed the otters entered the park through a <a href="https://www.astroawani.com/berita-malaysia/sekumpulan-memerang-mengganas-serang-pengunjung-taman-rekreasi-487399">damaged fence</a> while searching for food. The fence has since been repaired, but the public is encouraged to report any sightings of otters in the park. If the animals return, authorities will need to capture and relocate them for safety reasons.
As a precaution, the public is urged not to feed, approach, or antagonize the otters in any way. Otters are protected under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 and are commonly found in rivers and lakes.
