Avenys Founder Aleeya Zailan Calls Out Melaka Hotel For “Disgusting” Dark Brown Tap Water

Luxury doesn’t always mean quality.

Luxury doesn’t always mean quality.

In Malaysia, we're fortunate to enjoy one of the highest numbers of public holidays each year. Nationally, we have about 18 public holidays, and when you factor in additional state-specific holidays, the total comes to an impressive 56 different public holidays.

With a holiday on the horizon, we often carefully plan our time off to savour a much-needed break. Since many of us only get away once a year, we sometimes indulge in booking a luxurious hotel, expecting nothing less than immaculate rooms without a single flaw.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the experience for local entrepreneur Aleeya Zailan during her stay at a well-known hotel in Melaka, where she encountered shockingly poor living conditions (hint: the pipes were serving "free Teh Tarik").

Shocked To See Dark Brown Tap Water Flowing Out At The Hotel

The founder of Avenys recently took to Instagram to highlight the appalling plumbing conditions she encountered at her hotel room in Melaka. In her first video, Aleeya revealed a bathroom sink filled with brownish, contaminated water flowing from the tap. She further demonstrated the problem by showing the bathtub filled with the same polluted water, indicating that the issue stemmed from the hotel's water supply itself.

In her post, Aleeya did not name the hotel but described it as a well-known establishment in the state, mentioning that similar issues were affecting other rooms as well. She first noticed the water problem after experiencing a sore throat from brushing her teeth. Her concern grew when she realized her children had bathed with the contaminated water, raising fears about their health and safety. Aleeya expressed her frustration with the hotel for endangering its guests.

The videos quickly went viral on Instagram, garnering 448k and 646k views respectively. Many netizens, including several influencers, reacted with disgust over the state of the water. Given the hotel's reputation, some commenters identified the establishment and were shocked that a hotel with such a prestigious name could have such poor living conditions for its guests.

Here's some of the comments:

Accused Of Chasing Clout

Following the viral spread of her video, some netizens accused Aleeya of defaming the hotel and suggested she was seeking personal publicity. In response, Aleeya took to her Instagram stories to clarify that she had no need to resort to such tactics, as she is already successful with her cosmetic brand.

“I brought this issue to light because I wanted the hotel to take responsibility and improve its service quality,” she stated.

She added, “As a Malaccan, I am concerned about how such incidents might tarnish the state's reputation among tourists if they encounter the same problems.” Aleeya also revealed that she has received numerous messages from others who have experienced similar issues, noting that the problem has persisted since last year.

This situation highlights a serious issue with the hotel, and it’s crucial for the management to address and resolve it promptly. For a hotel with such a reputation, it is unacceptable to offer such substandard conditions to guests. We hope the necessary improvements are made swiftly to restore the hotel’s standards and ensure a better experience for future visitors.
