The merger between Capital A Bhd's low-cost aviation business and long-haul carrier AirAsia X Bhd is poised to bring significant benefits, with an expected 15% reduction in operational costs. This consolidation, which will unite AirAsia&rsquo;s short-haul and medium-to-long-haul operations under one group, promises more connections, new routes, and increased flight options.

Capital A CEO, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, announced the merger at a press conference on 15 October, following the company's extraordinary general meeting (EGM). He emphasized that the merger will likely result in lower ticket prices for consumers, addressing recent fluctuations in fares caused by capacity issues.
"Our number one goal is to offer more flights at lower prices," said Fernandes.
Strong Shareholder Support For The Merger
The merger deal, expected to conclude by the end of the year, gained overwhelming support from AirAsia X's shareholders. At the EGM on 16 October, 99.08% of the shareholders voted in favour of the acquisition of Capital A's aviation business, which includes AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd and AirAsia Bhd, for RM6.8 billion.

AirAsia X said this vote paves the way for a transformative acquisition, expanding its service offerings and capitalizing on new market opportunities. The merger will enhance operational synergies between the two companies and give AirAsia X access to over 200 existing aircraft and 361 future aircraft orders from Capital A's portfolio.
"This decision strengthens our position and allows us to combine narrow-body and wide-body aircraft into a unified group, enabling us to operate across short, medium, and long-haul routes more effectively," said AirAsia X chairman, Datuk Fam Lee Ee.
Potential Ticket Rate Reductions

Fernandes has hinted at the possibility of reduced ticket rates across all AirAsia flights if the merger is successful. According to Berita Harian, the anticipated 15% savings in operational costs would allow AirAsia to pass those savings on to consumers through lower ticket prices.
&ldquo;This merger strengthens AirAsia and allows for an increase in the aircraft fleet, as AAX will have access to AirAsia's narrow-body aircraft and vice versa. The combination of fleets will bring value to our customers by reducing fares and making operations more efficient,&rdquo; Fernandes explained.
The final approval of the merger is still pending, but the enthusiasm from both Fernandes and shareholders suggests that the merger is on track for completion by year-end, subject to court and regulatory approval.

He believes that a larger budget would stimulate the tourism sector and generate broader economic benefits, which would, in turn, support the aviation industry&rsquo;s growth.
&ldquo;The recovery of the tourism sector has been a key driver of post-COVID-19 economic recovery, and a larger budget would not only benefit the people but also airlines like AirAsia,&rdquo; Fernandes said.
As the aviation industry continues to recover from the impact of the pandemic, the merger between AirAsia and AirAsia X, combined with potential government support, is set to bring positive changes for both the company and its passengers. With the completion of this deal on the horizon, consumers can look forward to more affordable flights and an expanded network of routes.

But that public goodwill turned into collective outrage when news broke that Kopi had been shot dead during a stray dog culling operation carried out by the Besut District Council. The shooting occurred in the early hours of 6 October 2024, reportedly around 1.30am.
According to Dr Kartini Farah Abdul Rahim, one of the plaintiffs, several residents were awakened by the sound of gunshots. Upon investigating, they observed three council officers driving around in a pick-up truck. Shortly after, Kopi was found dead from gunshot wounds. Her death, initially revealed via a post on the &ldquo;My Forever Doggo&rdquo; Instagram account, prompted widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.
Legal Grounds: Alleged Breach of Animal Welfare Law

The activists are challenging the legality of the Besut District Council&rsquo;s Dog Licensing By-Laws 1990, specifically Sections 9(1) and 9(2), which empower council officers to shoot licensed or unlicensed dogs if no owner can be located.
The plaintiffs argue that these by-laws are incompatible with the stricter protections afforded by the Animal Welfare Act, a federal law that supersedes local legislation. They assert that allowing council officers to indiscriminately kill strays undermines national legal standards and sets a dangerous precedent.

After years of speculation, teasing, and public demand, WhatsApp has officially launched a native app for the iPad. Malaysia is once again celebrating a landmark moment in badminton history as national shuttlers Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani officially become the world's top-ranked men&rsquo;s doubles pair, according to the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on 27 May 2025. This milestone marks the first time a Malaysian men's doubles duo has ascended to the coveted No.1 position in nearly a decade.
A Return to the Summit After Almost a Decade
Goh and Nur, known affectionately by fans as FeiDin, now sit atop the global rankings with 91,090 points, surpassing Denmark&rsquo;s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who dropped to second place after failing to defend their title at the recently concluded Malaysia Masters. The Danes were dethroned following their semi-final loss to fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

Although Goh and Nur themselves bowed out in the quarter-finals of the same tournament after losing to another Malaysian pair, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, their consistent performances over the past year were enough to push them into the top spot. Their victory at the India Open in January 2025 was a pivotal moment, bolstering their climb after strong showings in 2024, which included titles at the Japan Open, China Open, and Arctic Open, as well as runner-up finishes at the BWF World Tour Finals and the Asian Championships.
This achievement makes Goh and Nur the first Malaysian men's doubles team to reach the world No.1 ranking since Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong in March 2016. Razif emphasised that without consistent performance and proper preparation, the pair risks losing their hard-earned position. &ldquo;Being on top must be motivation, not a destination. They must continue to train hard and think like champions if they are to remain at the peak,&rdquo; he added.
Spotlight on the Singapore Open

That said, the Danes have semi-final points from last year&rsquo;s Singapore Open to defend, while Goh and Nur could widen their lead by as much as 4,000 points if they reach the last four and Astrup-Rasmussen fall short in the quarters.
