In the world of esports, it&rsquo;s no secret that major titles are often dominated by powerhouse teams from North America, Europe, and select Asian regions, depending on the game. However, it&rsquo;s rare to witness a fully Malaysian team rising to the top of the international stage, especially in an S-Tier tournament.
In a historic triumph, Black Shrew Esports (BSE) has emerged as the undisputed champions of the Honor of Kings Championship 2024, defeating Dominator Esports from Indonesia in a decisive 4-0 sweep during the grand finals. This victory not only secures the Malaysian team a hefty prize of $300,000 (~RM1.3 million) but also cements their legacy as the inaugural champions of the game's first international tournament despite the team still being relatively new as they have all joined the team on 2 September 2024.

What Is Honor Of Kings?

Honor of Kings is a highly popular mobile multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed by Tencent, launched in 2015, and has since become one of the most-played mobile games globally, especially in China. Players are organized into two teams of five, with each team&rsquo;s objective being to defend its base while attempting to destroy the opposing team's base. Each player selects a hero character, each with unique abilities, roles, and strengths, such as tank, mage, or marksman, allowing for a variety of gameplay styles. The game&rsquo;s strategy relies heavily on team coordination, as players work together to defeat enemy heroes, secure objectives, and push through lanes to gain control over the battlefield.
Honor of Kings has a rich in-game lore inspired by Chinese history and mythology, which adds depth to the hero characters and resonates with its primary audience in China. The game&rsquo;s mechanics are optimized for mobile play, offering intuitive controls that make it accessible to both casual players and competitive gamers. Honor of Kings has also cultivated a thriving esports scene, with professional leagues and tournaments, and has inspired an international version called Arena of Valor, aimed at expanding its reach to players worldwide.
Comparable esports titles in the MOBA genre include League of Legends, a major PC game developed by Riot Games with similar team-based strategic gameplay, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, another mobile MOBA with a large following in Southeast Asia. Each of these titles shares core gameplay mechanics, emphasizing real-time strategy, teamwork, and hero-based competition. Honor of Kings, however, stands out for its cultural influence, its tailored mobile experience, and its extensive reach, which has cemented it as a staple in the esports community.
How Did The Team Perform Throughout The Tournament?

BSE's impressive performance was marked by a combination of consistency, skill, and strategic execution. After overcoming an early scare from Nova Esports in the initial rounds, they avenged their sole group-stage loss by edging out Fearless Esports HK in a nail-biting 3-2 thriller. This victory propelled them into the upper bracket final, where they once again faced Dominator Esports, sealing their place in the grand finals.
Dominator Esports, the home team, also demonstrated formidable prowess throughout the tournament, battling back through the lower bracket to earn a rematch with BSE after a gripping five-game victory against Team Secret. However, the grand finals showcased BSE's dominance, leaving no room for recovery.

The first match saw BSE execute a swift and aggressive early-game strategy, led by farm laner Ryan "JR" Na, who delivered an impressive performance with a KDA of 6/2/8. BSE maintained their momentum, taking control of the game and forcing Dominator to concede. In the second match, BSE escalated their assault, finishing the game in under 11 minutes with a relentless push that showcased their discipline and teamwork.
Despite Dominator's attempts to counter BSE by denying JR's signature pick, Arli, and handing it to Adrian "Toshi" Bacallo, BSE's versatility shone through. JR switched to Lady Sun and executed a flawless strategy, leading to a dominant victory with Tat Yann "MusangKing" Chan earning MVP honours with a perfect KDA of 5/0/6.
Though Dominator initially gained an early advantage in the fourth game, BSE quickly capitalized on their mistakes, regaining control and ultimately sealing their championship with a 13-minute victory in the final match.
