If you've been following political updates on social media, you probably know that the 2024 United States Election is fast approaching, with candidates intensifying their nationwide campaigns over the past few months.
In a shocking incident back in July, an attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump took place during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his right ear. Even more astonishing, the moment was captured both on video and in a remarkable photograph by a New York Times photographer, who managed to snap the bullet just as it whizzed past Trump&rsquo;s ear &ndash; truly a once-in-a-million shot.

This time, however, the campaigns are heating up, and even Malaysia has been brought into the spotlight&mdash;though not in the most favourable light, to say the least.
Tucker Carlson Fails At Mocking Kamala Harris

Throughout the 2024 presidential campaign, U.S. Vice President and current presidential candidate Kamala Harris has endured numerous attacks. Her opponent, former President Donald Trump, has frequently insulted her, calling her &ldquo;low IQ,&rdquo; &ldquo;Marxist,&rdquo; and even a &ldquo;fascist.&rdquo;
At Trump&rsquo;s rally in Madison Square Garden, New York City, on October 28 (local Malaysian time), several conservative and right-wing figures took the stage, including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and the world&rsquo;s wealthiest man, Elon Musk. Yet, it was former FOX News host Tucker Carlson who captured the spotlight this time. Known for his past controversies involving racism, sexism, and anti-immigration rhetoric, Carlson was reportedly dismissed from FOX News in April 2024 amid a lawsuit alleging sexism and a hostile work environment.
This history didn&rsquo;t deter him from sparking yet another controversy by targeting Democrat Kamala Harris, whom he disparagingly misidentified as &ldquo;Samoan-Malaysian.&rdquo;

During his speech, Carlson further undermined Kamala Harris&rsquo;s credibility by belittling her accomplishments and sarcastically implying that her success was solely due to &ldquo;popular support.&rdquo;
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s gonna be pretty hard for Democrats to look at us and say, you know what? Kamala Harris, she got 85 million votes because she&rsquo;s just so impressive. As the first Samoan-Malaysian low-IQ former California prosecutor ever to be elected president,&rdquo; he said at the rally.
What Exactly Was He Trying To Say?

To provide some context, Carlson's comments were actually tied to a previous appearance by Trump at the National Association of Black Journalists, where he criticized Harris's assertion of her Black identity.
It's important to note that Tucker completely misrepresented Kamala Harris&rsquo;s heritage; she is the daughter of a Black Jamaican father and an Indian (South Asian) mother. His confusion over her background seemed to be an attempt to mock what he perceived as Harris&rsquo;s "dubious" racial identity.
Malaysians Insult Carlson On Social Media
As Carlson's remarks went viral, many Malaysians&mdash;who take the "Malaysia Mentioned" joke quite seriously&mdash;took to Twitter to call him out for his ignorance and disrespect towards their country. Additionally, after Carlson labelled Harris as having a &ldquo;low IQ,&rdquo; some netizens fired back, asserting that Carlson is the one who truly embodies a low IQ.

While most Malaysians may not be directly affected by Carlson's statement, it's still an insult to have our country's name dragged into his &ldquo;hate speech.&rdquo; But this is America, where we can always expect a mix of good, bad, and downright unusual commentary. 
With the U.S. elections approaching, public safety is a growing concern, especially in light of violent incidents like the recent attempted assassination of Trump. To our fellow Malaysians, and to the Samoans referenced in this unfortunate remark, we sincerely hope you remain safe during these tense times in America.

Best known for portraying Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, in the MCU, Evans&rsquo;s return has sparked significant fan excitement. However, the big question remains: will he reprise his role as Captain America, or is he coming back in an entirely new capacity? While Marvel has kept tight-lipped about the specifics, fans are eagerly speculating about how his character will fit into the expanding multiverse storyline.

It&rsquo;s no secret that many Malaysians frequently voice concerns about the political landscape. Regardless of which party is in power, the outcomes often feel the same, and citizens continue to express frustrations, hoping for meaningful action from our ministers.
For those who may not know, these parliament sessions are crucial as they provide a platform for lawmakers to debate and pass legislation, address pressing national issues, and hold the government accountable. Parliament consists of two chambers: the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) and the Dewan Negara (Senate), where the nation&rsquo;s key decisions are shaped and discussed.
Amendments To Communications Act Passes But With the Absence Of 122 MPs

Recently, slightly more than half of the Members of Parliament (MPs) were absent during a critical Dewan Rakyat session. This occurred when the Communications and Multimedia (Amendments) Bill 2024 was passed through a bloc vote initiated by the opposition in an effort to challenge the proposed amendments.
Shockingly, 122 out of 222 MPs failed to show up when the votes were cast, raising serious concerns about parliamentary attendance and accountability.

According to reports, Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, in reading out the votes said 59 lawmakers voted in favour of the bill, 40 MPs voted against it, and one abstained from voting on the matter.
The bill was tabled for a third reading after the vote, and it was approved by a voice vote.
Just to note, the quorum of the House and of a Committee of the whole House must consist of the following:
<ol>
<li>The Senate shall consist of 10 Senators, excluding the chair.</li>
<li>The House of Representatives shall consist of 26 members excluding the chair.</li>
<li>The Special Chamber shall consist of three members including the chair.</li>
</ol>
For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a quorum is the number of members of an assembly that must be present at any of its meetings to make the proceedings of that meeting valid.
Given the notable absence of several MPs, many netizens questioned how the vote was passed and whether true democracy exists in the country. Some even argued that the MPs' absence was an affront, particularly to those who had elected them, as attending Dewan Rakyat sessions should be the very least expected of them.

Changes Made To The Communications and Multimedia Act

The proposed amendments to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act 1998 (Act 589) are designed to enhance MCMC's governance and operational effectiveness, making it more resilient and capable of regulating the communications and multimedia industry, according to a Bernama report.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that the revisions aim to make the industry more focused, capable, and efficient by strengthening MCMC's regulatory role. He also highlighted that the changes are in line with both local and global advancements and expectations for the industry.
One key change to the Act is the separation of the CEO and Commission Chairman roles, which are currently held by the same person. Fahmi explained that this separation would improve governance and operational efficiency, following the model of other statutory bodies, where different individuals hold these roles.
Article 19&rsquo;s Criticism of the Amendments

Article 19, an advocacy group for freedom of expression, has strongly condemned the recent amendments to the Act. In a joint statement with other civil society organizations, Article 19 criticized the Bill for expanding MCMC's authority to control online content, compel service providers to disclose user data, and suspend Content Application Service Providers (CASPs) for non-compliance.
The statement further argued that the amendments increase punitive measures for offenses and fail to repeal key provisions that undermine freedom of expression. It also criticized the Madani government's delay in implementing human rights reforms, which the group believes encourages censorship, diminishes accountability, and stifles dissent.
Article 19 emphasized that the amendments grant MCMC sweeping powers, including the ability to regulate online content, conduct searches and seizures without a warrant, and compel social media platforms to share user data without judicial oversight. The Act also grants MCMC immunity from court proceedings, which the group sees as problematic. These changes, while aiming to streamline investigations, fail to uphold basic principles of liberty and the international legal framework for internet censorship.
The group warned that the amendments could stifle free speech, erode public trust, and enable mass surveillance. The absence of independent judicial oversight in data access requests was another significant concern, further compounding these violations. They pointed out that the Bill passed without sufficient safeguards.
Article 19&rsquo;s Call for Action:
Article 19 urges the Malaysian government to protect human rights and align its legislation with international standards, particularly those outlined in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which sets the standards for freedom of expression.
Although Malaysia is not a party to the ICCPR, the group stresses that the provisions of Article 19 should still guide the country's international obligations, as they are based on the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR).
In their joint statement, Article 19 called for the following actions:

<li>Halt the Bill's progress in the Senate and refer it to the Parliament Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Elections, and Institutional Reform for further review.</li>
<li>Repeal Sections 211 and 233 of the Act.</li>
<li>Review all provisions in the CMA that do not comply with freedom of expression standards outlined in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.</li>
<li>Commit to transparent and inclusive policymaking that respects the rights of all Malaysians, fostering trust and accountability.</li>

To be fair, this wasn&rsquo;t the lowest attendance in Parliament; back in 2019, fewer than 26 out of 222 MPs attended a Dewan Rakyat session, which was eventually suspended due to a lack of quorum. At present, there is no official list of those who attended or voted during the session. However, we hope that in the future, our leaders will take greater responsibility, as their decisions have a direct impact on our lives.

What is an Assessment Tax?
Assessment tax is a crucial revenue source for local councils, forming the backbone of essential community services and infrastructure maintenance. The tax supports:

The adjustment is projected to generate an additional RM355 million annually for local councils. These funds will be channelled into improving public infrastructure, such as roads, parks, and waste management systems, as well as strengthening community services across Selangor.
Addressing Public Concerns with Discounts and Exemptions

For example, if a homeowner currently pays RM100 annually in assessment tax, their revalued rate would have risen to RM200 in 2025. With the cap, they will now pay RM125 instead, a 75% reduction from the initial projection.
Additionally, the government has announced targeted exemptions:

<li>Low-cost housing and SelangorKu homes: These properties will continue to enjoy full assessment tax exemptions.</li>
<li>Traditional village homes: A total of 2,849 homes in traditional villages have already been exempted, with plans to extend this to 5,000 properties in 2025 for those meeting specific criteria.</li>
</ul>
Datuk Ng acknowledged the financial pressures on vulnerable groups and emphasized that these measures aim to protect them while allowing local councils to sustain essential services.
Long-Term Benefits for Selangor Residents
