Experience is often a key factor in job applications, especially in specialized fields, where a strong work history can significantly boost hiring chances.
However, for one Malaysian engineer, this wasn&rsquo;t enough. His hopes of securing a position at a government-linked company (GLC) turned into a nightmare, but not for the reasons you might expect.
Engineer Loses GLC Job Due To Low CGPA
Ahmad Mus&rsquo;ab took to social media to share his friend&rsquo;s frustration after a disappointing experience. Despite 17 years of industry experience, his friend&rsquo;s dream job at a government-linked company (GLC) slipped away due to an old, low CGPA score. Ahmad explained that his friend had successfully progressed through the hiring process, only to be rejected because of his decades-old academic record.

After going through the interview process, Ahmad shared that his friend had successfully passed all rounds with the GLC&rsquo;s hiring managers, negotiated his salary, and then waited three long months for a formal offer letter.
&ldquo;He has the title of &lsquo;Ir.&rsquo;, and it&rsquo;s not just any title &mdash; it&rsquo;s &lsquo;Ir.&rsquo; with a Practicing Certificate (PC). He&rsquo;s been working for 17 years in the engineering industry, including consultancy,&rdquo; said Ahmad.
However, despite clearing all interviews, Ahmad&rsquo;s friend ultimately saw his opportunity slip away when the company rejected his application due to an old, low CGPA. Shockingly, this rejection was reportedly based on a new HR policy recently implemented by the company. In the end, the role went to a candidate with a higher CGPA but lacking a Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate (PEPC) qualification.
Described The Situation As &ldquo;A Total Waste Of His Time&rdquo;

At the time of writing, Ahmad&rsquo;s post has gone viral on social media, garnering 274 shares. The experience left his friend with a "bitter taste," as he described it as "a total waste of time" after waiting three months for a job offer that ultimately went to someone else.
In the comments, netizens shared a range of opinions. Some speculated that the company never intended to hire Ahmad&rsquo;s friend and simply used the CGPA as an excuse. Others suggested that the role may have gone to someone with connections within the company, which is often seen in cases where "cables" play a part in hiring decisions.

It&rsquo;s unfortunate that today, qualifications alone often aren&rsquo;t enough to secure a desired job &mdash; connections seem to carry significant weight, with many favouring well-connected candidates.
On a positive note, skilled TVET graduates in Johor can expect competitive starting salaries of RM4,000 to RM5,000, thanks to the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC). This initiative aims to align skilled workers&rsquo; salaries with those offered in Singapore, helping retain local talent and reducing the need for skilled workers to seek opportunities abroad.
