For many Malaysians, sports hold a special place in our hearts. Whether as fans or aspiring athletes, we dream of reaching the pinnacle of success, representing our country on the international stage, and proudly waving the Jalur Gemilang. However, breaking into Malaysia’s competitive sports scene can be challenging. More often than not, we find ourselves cheering for our favourite athletes from the sidelines or through TV screens.

What many might not realize, though, is that there are numerous international superstars with meaningful connections to Malaysia. From living or studying here to having Malaysian heritage, these ties often excite fans and bring a sense of pride when global celebrities share links to our country.

While it’s rare to see Malaysian athletes consistently dominating the world stage, did you know that Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has Malaysian roots? That’s right—his connection to Malaysia comes through his mother, who hails from our beautiful nation!

Who’s Nick Kyrgios?

Nick Kyrgios is an Australian professional tennis player widely recognized for his electrifying talent, charismatic personality, and unpredictable style of play. Born on April 27, 1995, in Canberra, Australia, Kyrgios turned professional in 2013 and quickly made headlines by defeating Rafael Nadal as a 19-year-old wildcard at Wimbledon 2014, becoming the first man since 2004 to reach the quarterfinals on debut. Known for his thunderous serve, creative shot-making, and ability to perform under pressure, Kyrgios has recorded notable wins against top players like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray, earning him a reputation as one of the most dangerous competitors on the ATP Tour.

Kyrgios achieved his career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 13 in October 2016. Despite not winning a Grand Slam title, he has reached major finals, including the Wimbledon 2022 final, where he lost to Djokovic in a hard-fought match. In doubles, Kyrgios captured his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2022 alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis, a triumph celebrated by fans as the “Special K” duo. His success extends to ATP titles, with seven singles and four doubles trophies to his name, showcasing his versatility across formats.

Off the court, Kyrgios is both a fan favourite and a polarizing figure, known for his candid interviews, on-court antics, and philanthropic efforts, including his work through the Nick Kyrgios Foundation, which supports underprivileged youth. While his talent is undeniable, his career has also been marked by injuries and breaks from competition. In 2023, Kyrgios suffered a knee injury requiring surgery, forcing him to withdraw from multiple tournaments, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The injury sidelined him for much of the year, raising questions about his long-term prospects but also highlighting his resilience as he worked toward recovery.

Kyrgios’s unique blend of raw talent, passion for the sport, and unpredictable personality continues to make him one of the most talked-about figures in tennis, drawing both admiration and criticism while solidifying his legacy as one of the game’s most intriguing stars.

Says Mum Grew Up In “Pure Slum City”

The controversial tennis star recently found himself in hot water after comments he made during an interview on Louis Theroux’s podcast sparked outrage among Malaysians. While discussing his family background, Kyrgios described his mother, Norlaila, as having grown up in dire poverty in Malaysia. However, this depiction has been called into question by those familiar with her true heritage.

In a short clip from the podcast, Kyrgios painted a picture of his mother’s difficult childhood, claiming she grew up in a wooden shack in a “pure slum” outside Kuala Lumpur. He used this narrative to emphasize the challenges his parents overcame to create a better life for their family. “My mom grew up in a wooden shack and my dad came by boat,” he said, implying their struggles as immigrants fuelled his drive and success.

Kyrgios further defended himself against criticisms of underachievement, stating, “I’ve worked ten times harder than the majority of people.” He suggested that his upbringing and the sacrifices made by his parents were driving factors in his career, which he views as a triumph over adversity.

The Truth About Norlaila’s Background

Kyrgios’s statements about his mother’s upbringing, however, don’t align with widely reported accounts of her background. Norlaila, was born into the royal family of Pahang, making her a Tengku by birth. According to the New Straits Times, her grandfather’s cousin was the Sultan of Pahang.

Norlaila grew up in Gombak, Selangor, in what many would consider a privileged environment. Adding to her distinguished lineage, Norlaila’s mother, Juliana Ibrahim, was a celebrated actress who starred alongside the legendary Tan Sri P. Ramlee in the 1967 Malaysian classic Sesudah Suboh.

Migration to Australia and Life Challenges

While Norlaila’s early life in Malaysia appears to have been far from the hardships described by her son, her journey to Australia was not without its challenges. At the age of 12, she moved to Australia with her mother and sister after her mother married an Australian soldier in Singapore.

In an interview with Lite FM in 2020, Norlaila opened up about her experiences with racism in Australia during her youth. She also recounted financial struggles while raising her children, including taking out loans to support their education. Despite these difficulties, Norlaila achieved success as a computer engineer and married George Kyrgios, a Greek painter.

Malaysians Don’t Believe Kyrgios’s Claims

Kyrgios’s remarks about his mother’s upbringing have sparked strong reactions, particularly from Malaysians who feel his description misrepresents her heritage. Many took to social media to refute his claims, highlighting her royal lineage and privileged upbringing.

The controversy has raised questions about why Kyrgios chose to frame his mother’s story in such stark terms, with some suggesting it may have been an attempt to dramatize his family’s narrative or inspire his audience.

Here’s some of the comments:

While Norlaila’s life journey does include moments of hardship, particularly after moving to Australia, her Malaysian upbringing contrasts sharply with Kyrgios’s depiction. This discrepancy has not only drawn attention to her royal roots but also prompted broader discussions about the portrayal of personal histories in public narratives.

As the debate continues, it serves as a reminder of the importance of accurately representing family stories, particularly when they intersect with cultural and historical legacies.
