In the wake of the tragic deaths of four attendees at the Pinkfish Countdown concert in Petaling Jaya on New Year&rsquo;s Eve, the Selangor state government is moving swiftly to tighten safety measures at public events. The incident, suspected to involve drug use, has prompted state authorities to propose a range of stricter guidelines for concert organizers. State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman, Datuk Ng Suee Lim, announced the proposal, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing public safety. &ldquo;We need to ensure that concerts are safe for everyone. This includes stricter collaboration with police and local authorities to thoroughly check for drug abuse and other criminal activities at events,&rdquo; Ng said during a workshop aimed at standardizing best practices for local authorities.

Ng shared examples of existing rigorous security measures at events, citing his experience at a Kitaro concert in Genting Highlands, where attendees underwent comprehensive checks, including scans and inspections of personal belongings. He proposed adopting similar protocols in Selangor, combined with urine tests, to deter individuals under the influence of drugs or carrying prohibited substances from entering concert venues.
In addition to urine screening, the state government is considering the deployment of advanced scanning equipment to detect and prevent illegal items from being smuggled into concert venues. Ng stressed that these measures aim to create a safer environment for concert-goers while holding event organizers accountable for maintaining high safety standards.
The recommendations will be discussed further in an upcoming state executive council meeting, where other measures to strengthen SOPs will also be evaluated.
Suspension of Concert Permits

As investigations into the Pinkfish Countdown concert deaths continue, Selangor police have temporarily suspended the issuance of concert permits. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan stated that the suspension will remain in place until organizers demonstrate their ability to control events and prevent issues such as drug distribution. However, he clarified that no major events have been postponed yet, although one concert initially scheduled in Bandar Sunway has been relocated to Kuala Lumpur.

The deaths of the four individuals, aged between 20 and 40, including two women, have drawn national attention to the need for greater oversight and accountability in concert management.
