What was meant to be an unforgettable winter getaway in Japan turned into a harrowing experience for Malaysian traveller Fanny. By 8 January, her breathing had become severely laboured, and she struggled to speak or walk. Despite her family's pleas for her to return to Malaysia, she feared that her deteriorating condition would prevent her from boarding a flight.
Hospital Admission and Unexpected Challenges

With no other options left, Fanny was finally taken to a hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with pneumonia and Influenza A. During her one-night stay, she faced unexpected difficulties, such as being given only cold water and ice packs instead of fever medication. Frustrated by the lack of effective treatment, she discharged herself despite experiencing a persistent fever and a worsening cough.
However, the brief hospitalisation came at a staggering cost&mdash;she was billed RM15,000 for just one night. While she had travel insurance, she was shocked to learn that emergency hospital admissions in Japan required an upfront cash payment. Concerned about her financial situation and unable to afford an extended stay, she made the difficult decision to leave the hospital and return to Malaysia for further treatment.
A Risky Flight Home and a Critical Condition Upon Arrival

Medical tests revealed that her blood oxygen levels were critically low, far worse than initially expected. Unlike typical pneumonia cases, where patients are usually prescribed just two medications, she requires more than ten different treatments on her first night.
Doctors informed her that her condition was life-threatening, and she was immediately placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as her oxygen levels remained unstable. She remained hospitalised for five days and four nights before being placed in isolation to prevent further complications. Fortunately, after weeks of recovery, she eventually regained her health.
A Shocking Revelation and a Close Call
While filing her insurance claims, Fanny received her medical report, revealing that her symptoms were strikingly similar to those of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, who had recently died from influenza complications in Japan. The revelation sent chills down her spine, making her realise just how lucky she was to have survived.

The crime took place over several days between 8 and 11 December 2021 at their shared residence in Amber Tower, Lido Avenue Condominium, located in Penampang, Sabah.
The prosecution revealed that Nur Afiyah, who had migrated from Indonesia to work as a maid, was subjected to persistent mistreatment and inhumane working conditions. She was not only deprived of wages and basic rights, but also physically tortured over an extended period. Photos and videos presented in court&mdash;recovered from the couple&rsquo;s own mobile phones&mdash;graphically captured the abuse she endured in the days leading up to her death.
Brutality Captured on Camera

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus, the abuse was systematic and deliberate. &ldquo;This was not a killing born out of rage or a single moment of violence,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It was prolonged, premeditated torture, with no regard for the victim&rsquo;s humanity.&rdquo;
The videos and images showed visible signs of physical injury, with the court hearing that the couple had even documented the abuse themselves, seemingly without remorse. The disturbing nature of the footage strengthened the prosecution&rsquo;s argument that the pair had every intention of inflicting harm and had acted with a shared purpose.
&ldquo;This was a young woman who left her home to earn a living honestly in the midst of a global pandemic,&rdquo; Dacia told the court. &ldquo;She died not in an accident, not in an act of sudden violence, but as a result of sustained, systematic cruelty at the hands of those who were supposed to protect and shelter her.&rdquo;
Court Delivers Verdict and Sentencing

Their failure to provide medical care, food, and fair treatment, paired with overwhelming evidence of injury and abuse, led to their conviction.
The two were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which pertains to murder committed by more than one person. This section allows for the death penalty, or imprisonment for not less than 30 years and up to 40 years, as well as not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane for those not sentenced to death.
While the Attorney-General&rsquo;s Chambers initially pushed for the mandatory death sentence, Judge Lim instead imposed 34 years of imprisonment for both individuals, citing the severity of the crime and the strength of the evidence. Ambree was also ordered to receive 12 strokes of the rotan, while Etiqah was exempted from caning due to her gender, in line with Section 289 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Both convicts, who had previously been out on bail, were ordered to begin serving their sentences immediately from the date of conviction.
Defence Fails to Raise Doubt

The court also noted the emotional and psychological torment suffered by the victim, who had been isolated from any form of external support or protection. The judge highlighted how this case reflects not just individual criminality, but also broader systemic vulnerabilities faced by domestic workers&mdash;particularly foreign nationals&mdash;living in private homes in Malaysia.
Prosecution: &ldquo;A Case That Shook the Nation&rdquo;

She added that Nur Afiyah was not only denied wages and freedom of movement but was also robbed of dignity and life. &ldquo;She was never allowed to return home. Her body did, but her hopes, her sacrifices, were extinguished behind closed doors,&rdquo; she said.

The case has reignited public outrage over the treatment of domestic workers in Malaysia, particularly those from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. NGOs and human rights groups have long campaigned for better safeguards and routine checks, as many workers operate without contracts, proper wages, or protection from abuse.
The fact that Etiqah had once gained public recognition as a finalist in MasterChef Malaysia 2012 made the case all the more shocking, with many questioning how someone in the public eye could inflict such cruelty behind closed doors.

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has once again escaped conviction in one of his many legal battles, after the High Court granted him a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) over RM27 million allegedly misappropriated from SRC International. However, the 70-year-old remains behind bars, serving a six-year sentence for a separate SRC-related conviction involving RM42 million.
SRC International: The RM27 Million DNAA Explained

The judge ruled in favour of a DNAA, agreeing with the defence that it would be unjust for Najib to continue facing charges indefinitely without trial. Noting the prosecution&rsquo;s repeated delays and inability to proceed&mdash;despite six years having passed&mdash;Justice Muniandy said there was no sign the case could move forward within a reasonable time frame.
&ldquo;The prolonged wait has become a long haul for the accused, denying him timely resolution,&rdquo; the judge said. He emphasised that criminal charges should not hang over an accused like &ldquo;the sword of Damocles.&rdquo;
A DNAA means Najib is released from the charges, but not acquitted&mdash;should fresh evidence emerge, the prosecution may reopen the case.
Prosecution&rsquo;s Delays and Missing Documents

Shafee later told reporters that Najib was &ldquo;very happy&rdquo; with the outcome, adding that the number of cases hanging over his client was now diminishing, allowing the former premier to focus solely on the high-profile 1MDB trial.
Najib&rsquo;s Ongoing Legal Woes

The 1MDB-linked case that landed him in prison was the first to result in an actual conviction&mdash;but it is far from his only legal entanglement.
The Larger 1MDB Scandal and Other DNAA Cases

However, access to confirm the existence of the royal decree has reportedly been stalled by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Shafee said the Prisons Department had no objection to Najib lodging a police report himself, but Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had not granted permission despite multiple written requests.
What Happens Next?
For now, Najib&rsquo;s legal focus shifts solely to the 1MDB-Tanore case. If he is found guilty, it could add more jail time on top of his current sentence&mdash;even with the reduced term from the royal pardon.
The DNAA granted in the RM27 million SRC case spares Najib from immediate further prosecution, but it remains a temporary reprieve. The prosecution is free to reinstate the charges when ready, and the shadow of his extensive legal history still looms large over the former prime minister.
With mounting controversies and his legacy deeply entwined with one of the world's most infamous financial scandals, Najib Razak&rsquo;s courtroom saga is far from over.

A 29.5km Line Connecting Key Districts

All Approvals Settled, Work Packages Awarded

He also mentioned that major work packages have already been awarded to subcontractors by the main contractor. Among them is Econpile (M) Sdn Bhd, which recently secured a RM42.82 million contract for bored piling and related groundwork from Irama Duta Sdn Bhd.
Acknowledging Penang&rsquo;s existing traffic challenges, Loke assured that proper traffic management plans will be implemented to minimise disruptions during construction. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve requested that, once piling and construction begin, there must be a proper traffic diversion plan in place,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;As with any construction project, there will be some impact, but our aim is to keep it manageable.&rdquo;
Residents can expect regular updates and engagement efforts from local authorities and MRT Corp as works progress, especially in high-traffic areas near George Town and Bayan Lepas.
Target Completion by 2030
The full completion of the Mutiara Line is slated for 2030. While this may seem a long wait, transport experts note that the complexity of urban rail infrastructure &mdash; particularly in heritage-rich and densely built-up areas like George Town &mdash; requires careful planning and phased execution.
The government has not ruled out the possibility of certain segments becoming operational ahead of full completion if conditions allow.
