In a momentous and unprecedented move, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American to assume the papacy in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. His election by the College of Cardinals concludes a swift two-day conclave and ushers in a new era for the Church, following the death of Pope Francis in April.

The announcement, marked by the traditional white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney and the ringing of bells across Rome, was followed by his first public appearance on the balcony of St Peter&rsquo;s Basilica.
&ldquo;Peace be with you all,&rdquo; declared Pope Leo XIV in Italian, before switching to Spanish to reach a broader segment of the global Catholic community. &ldquo;Help us build bridges, through dialogue and encounter, so that we may always be a people of peace.&rdquo;
A Life of Service: From Chicago to Peru and Beyond

Born in 1955 in Chicago to Spanish and Franco-Italian parents, Prevost was raised in a devout Catholic household and ordained in 1982. Just three years later, he embarked on a missionary journey to Peru, where he would serve for over two decades&mdash;first as a parish priest and seminary teacher in Trujillo, then later as Bishop of Chiclayo.
Prevost&rsquo;s deep ties to Peru led to his eventual naturalisation as a Peruvian citizen. He remains a beloved figure in the country, particularly among marginalised communities, where he was known for advocating for the poor, fostering inclusion, and promoting social justice. Upon news of his election, the bells of Lima&rsquo;s cathedral rang in celebration, and President Dina Boluarte joyously declared, &ldquo;The Pope is Peruvian; God loves Peru!&rdquo;
In 2014, he was appointed bishop by Pope Francis and was later named a cardinal in 2023. He played a pivotal role in one of Francis&rsquo; most significant reforms&mdash;adding women to the Dicastery for Bishops, the powerful body that oversees episcopal nominations worldwide.
A Papacy of Bridge-Building and Continuity

Pope Leo XIV has signalled his intent to continue many of Francis&rsquo; reformist efforts, particularly in the areas of social justice, care for migrants, and environmental stewardship. He has spoken out against policies that marginalise refugees and immigrants and previously criticised the Trump administration&rsquo;s hardline stance on migration.
In his first speech as pope, he paid warm tribute to his predecessor, recalling Pope Francis&rsquo; final blessing on Easter Sunday: &ldquo;We still keep in our ears that weak, but always courageous, voice of Pope Francis blessing Rome.&rdquo;
Leo XIV has also expressed a strong environmental ethic, advocating for action on climate change and supporting Vatican initiatives like the installation of solar panels and use of electric vehicles. &ldquo;We must move from words to action,&rdquo; he said last year, calling for a &ldquo;relationship of reciprocity&rdquo; with nature.
Social Doctrine and the Legacy of Leo XIII

The choice of the name &ldquo;Leo&rdquo; is rich with symbolic meaning. The last Pope to bear the name, Leo XIII (1878&ndash;1903), was a vocal advocate for workers&rsquo; rights during the industrial revolution and is considered one of the founding voices of Catholic social teaching. By selecting this name, Leo XIV has aligned himself with a legacy of defending the vulnerable and addressing inequality.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed the connection, stating the new pope&rsquo;s name is &ldquo;a clear reference to the social doctrine of the Church.&rdquo;
Observers also note that the name Leo hearkens back even further to Pope Leo I, who famously persuaded Attila the Hun not to attack Rome&mdash;a reminder of the Church&rsquo;s role in diplomacy and peacemaking.
The Road Ahead: Reforms, Unity, and Global Challenges

Leo XIV takes the helm of the Catholic Church at a time of immense global turbulence&mdash;politically, socially, and spiritually. Beyond asserting the Church&rsquo;s moral authority on the world stage, he will need to navigate internal tensions, unite a diverse and often divided Church, and address long-standing issues such as the sexual abuse scandal.
Though his stance on some issues, such as LGBT inclusion, remains somewhat ambiguous, he has supported Pope Francis&rsquo; decision to permit blessings for same-sex couples under certain conditions, while also stressing the need for local interpretation and cultural sensitivity.
His leadership will also be watched closely for how he steers the Church on questions of gender inclusion. As Cardinal, he voiced strong support for women&rsquo;s participation in key Vatican decision-making roles, saying in 2024: &ldquo;Their presence contributes significantly to the discernment process in choosing our bishops.&rdquo;
Looking to the Future
Pope Leo XIV&rsquo;s papal inauguration is expected within the coming week, featuring a Mass attended by political and religious leaders from around the globe. Until then, he will lead a Mass for cardinals in the Sistine Chapel and recite the Regina Caeli in St Peter&rsquo;s Square on Sunday, followed by a special audience for members of the global media on Monday.
While much remains to be seen, Pope Leo XIV&rsquo;s first words offer a clear vision of hope, humility, and unity: &ldquo;Evil will not prevail. We are all in God&rsquo;s hands. The world needs His light&hellip; let us come together, hand in hand with God.&rdquo;
His election marks not just a historical first for the United States, but a powerful signal that the Catholic Church is embracing a global, outward-facing vision&mdash;one grounded in compassion, justice, and bridge-building across cultures and continents.
