Looks like the past of a man is out to haunt him. Recently a post went viral on social media which was about a security guard who had passed away due to complications from injuries sustained when he was brutally assaulted while on duty back in December last year.
The post was made by a family member of the victim which included pictures of the victim.
<img src="https://cdn1.myc.com.my/image/upload/v1630293290/unsigned/jptqtivnu3aunjild2jl.webp" alt="" width="500" /> Image of the victim back in 2019
&nbsp;
The pictures described the conditions of the victim over the past eight months from the time he was in the hospital till the day he passed away at home.
The post has since gone viral with over 13,000 shares and hundreds of comments flooding justice for the man.
As frustrations grew, the family had resorted to social media as there was no concrete action taken by the authorities against the suspect.
The guard was unresponsive upon hitting the floor and the suspect had even tried to move him around.
<img src="https://cdn1.myc.com.my/image/upload/v1630293318/unsigned/ztvcdfwqbm9hfueo2nnd.jpg" alt="" width="500" height=" " /> The sequence of events that happened on December 2020
&nbsp;
The incident happened at a condominium in Ipoh, Perak back in December 2020
The suspect who assaulted the guard was a homestay guest and had come down to the swimming pool area with his son which was situated on the 7th floor.
Due to the SOPs of the pandemic during the time, the area was still under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) and the management had only opened the swimming pool for adults and had closed the children&rsquo;s pool. That&rsquo;s a bit odd cause if I recalled, pools were not allowed to be opened during that period.
The homestay guest was dissatisfied and still insisted for his son to play at the pool. The family member had also allegedly said that another security guard on duty at the time had informed the management office with the manager trying to reason with the guest to no avail.
The homestay guest then came with his son and started arguing and provoking him.
"My uncle explained to him the danger if he didn't follow the rules. After some time the homestay guest pushed my uncle's table with the intention to use it as a weapon to hit him. He was hit twice with the table and the homestay guest forcefully pushed him to the ground," said the family member.
"After he did it, all the while his son was with him witnessing all that, he (the suspect) was roaming around that area for some time and suddenly ran over to the management office to inform the clerk that the guard has fallen down and that he only wanted to help him&rdquo;.
The management office then saw the broken table and it had revealed the truth. The victim was rushed to Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh while the manager went to the Pekan Bahru police station to file in a report.
Meanwhile, the victim&rsquo;s wife had lodged a police report on behalf, but the police had refused to take the report.

&nbsp;
The accused was charged with Section 324 and was remanded for two days. Although he had appeared in court on 6 January 2021 under Section 335, he was out under bail while the victim was fighting for his life.

&nbsp;
Section 324 of the Penal Code covers voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons likely to cause death and carries 10 years behind bars or fine or whipping or any two of the punishments.
Section 325 of the Penal Code covers voluntarily causes grievous hurt and carries a lighter sentence of seven years behind bars with a fine if found guilty.
"We have waited for eight months due to some legal advisors asked us not to reveal anything but now we want justice and whatever damage the accused did to my uncle, he needs to face the consequences and face the actual detention," the family member said, adding that he needs to be held responsible.
Perak police chief Mior Faridalthrash had issued a statement to clarify the situation
<img src="https://cdn1.myc.com.my/image/upload/v1630293408/unsigned/gpe2sghzvylzfh3dv3lw.jpg" alt="" width="500" height=" " /> Chief Mior explaining the situation.
&nbsp;
Bernama reports that the chief had acknowledge the incident and had noted that the suspect was charged under Section 335 with causing grievous hurt. Additionally, the case is scheduled to have a mention on the 9th of September.
In light of new evidence, they have reopened an investigation under Section 326 which covers voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon or means likely to cause death and it carries a sentence of 20 years behind bars with a fine or whipping if found guilty.
The perpetrator has been identified as Noor Azhar Muhammad who is a Bersatu Youth division member in Kota Bharu, Kelantan according to a report by Malaysia Kini.
It is to note that the death of the victim was due to a lung infection (sepsis) but the family was still dissatisfied with it and still claims that the death was due to the assault.

&nbsp;
On 29 August, Ipoh Barat member of Parliament (MP) M Kula Segaran said that the wife of the deceased had come to see him asking for assistance.

&nbsp;
"As the victim has succumbed to death due to the injuries sustained, I urge the DPP to request the police to do a thorough investigation again and reclassify this case on a murder charge," he added.
"Nobody is above the law, and no one should take the law into his own hands. This case is also a reflection of a larger moral issue of the powerful, failing to comply with established rules and procedures and tendencies to act violently against the weak when ego needs are not met," said the local MP.

Waze has rejected allegations that it collects sensitive government information or allows users&rsquo; personal data to be exploited, following Malaysia&rsquo;s decision to prohibit civil servants from using the navigation app for official duties.
In a statement to Reuters on Thursday, 22 October, a Waze spokesperson described the allegations as completely false, adding that the platform operates under strict privacy policies designed to protect user data and comply with global data protection standards.
The response came a day after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the restriction, citing concerns about government information security and personal data. He also encouraged Malaysians to consider locally developed alternatives, including TuJu, a navigation app developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd.
However, TuJu has faced mounting criticism over its reliability following a surge in downloads. Technical disruptions have forced the temporary suspension of its main turn-by-turn navigation feature, raising questions about whether the local app is ready to replace established platforms.
Waze Rejects Allegations Over User Data
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/57c41ada94e069340620d738e03c77c1fd2a47ca820b9a25af377d56505ffe22" />
Waze&rsquo;s statement directly challenges concerns raised by the Malaysian government about the security of information collected through the application.
Anwar announced the restriction on 21 October, citing potential risks involving sensitive government information and personal data. The government also encouraged the public to explore Malaysian-developed navigation services.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo subsequently explained in the Dewan Rakyat that the restriction was partly related to Waze&rsquo;s terms of service, which place the application under Israeli law. He said this raised questions about the legal remedies available to Malaysians should a dispute arise.
The government was also concerned about location privacy, including claims that users&rsquo; movements could potentially be tracked even when the application was not actively being used.
Waze, which is owned by Google, maintains that its privacy policies protect users&rsquo; information. Its latest statement provides the company&rsquo;s response to the allegations, although the restriction on civil servants remains in place.
Waze Ban Does Not Apply to All Malaysians
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/475f28591d8a81d8fe39c62904dbc79928b0645cab7803185d6b442018b36e2e" />
Gobind clarified that the restriction applies only to civil servants using Waze while performing official duties. It does not constitute a nationwide ban, and members of the public remain free to use the application.
He also stressed that civil servants are not required to use TuJu exclusively, with other navigation services, including Google Maps, remaining available.
The clarification followed concerns raised by Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, who questioned whether TuJu was sufficiently developed to replace established navigation platforms after trying the app herself.
Gobind acknowledged that TuJu needed further improvements and said the Digital Ministry would work with TuJu, PINTAZ and other relevant parties under the government&rsquo;s GovTech initiative to strengthen locally developed digital services.
Initially designed to provide highway traffic information, TuJu offers features such as selected highway CCTV feeds, toll charges, rest and service area information, and tools for reporting road damage. The government is now looking to expand its coverage to include traffic conditions on roads leading to major highways.
TuJu Faces Technical Problems and User Complaints
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/183bd85b15dd3b9f42bd62b125344cd5fe4d4bbfbc5456553d1f0f6af2eaa237" />
Despite renewed attention following the government&rsquo;s announcement, TuJu has struggled to cope with demand while facing criticism over its core navigation functions.
LLM announced that the app was undergoing urgent maintenance after a surge in users overwhelmed its servers. During the disruption, its main turn-by-turn navigation feature was temporarily disabled, although selected highway CCTV feeds and basic information services remained available.
The authority apologised for the disruption, acknowledging that system capacity and server stability needed improvement to accommodate the sudden increase in users.
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/d771391fc6aa47d877a2c30f20d7305764014482b0c45c58fa6edb667a2128f6" />
Beyond the technical disruption, motorists have reported problems with navigation accuracy, confusing directions, missing lane guidance and difficulty locating destinations. Some users have complained that the app provides unreliable instructions around complicated highway interchanges, where missing an exit can significantly affect a journey.
Other reported issues include unreliable traffic information, CCTV feeds that fail to load and the absence of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.
These shortcomings have raised questions about whether TuJu is ready for everyday use, particularly among motorists who depend on accurate, real-time guidance when travelling through busy areas such as Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley.
LLM said it was working with Prosignal Consortium, the Works Ministry and the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) to address system stability, navigation accuracy, data governance and cybersecurity concerns.
The authority has also pledged to improve the app&rsquo;s capacity and overall user experience, although the timing for the full restoration of its navigation function was not specified in the reports provided.
Government Plans to Improve Local Navigation Services
Gobind said the government recognised public feedback about TuJu&rsquo;s shortcomings and would explore ways to improve its capabilities alongside other locally developed services, including PINTAZ.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort to strengthen Malaysia&rsquo;s digital services while addressing concerns about data security and sovereignty.
However, developing a dependable navigation platform requires more than local ownership. Accurate directions, reliable traffic updates, stable servers and a user-friendly interface will be essential if TuJu is to gain public confidence and compete with established alternatives.
For now, the government&rsquo;s restriction remains limited to civil servants carrying out official duties, while the public can continue choosing their preferred navigation applications.
With Waze rejecting the allegations against it and TuJu undergoing improvements, the debate now centres on balancing data security concerns with the practical needs of motorists who rely on dependable navigation every day.

Waze Rejects Malaysia’s Data Security Claims As TuJu Struggles To Replace Navigation App

Malaysia is considering a dedicated law to hold companies and individuals responsible for transboundary haze pollution accountable, as worsening air quality and recurring forest fires increase pressure on the government to secure action from Indonesia.
Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia could introduce legislation similar to Singapore&rsquo;s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act 2014. However, any proposed law would need clear enforcement mechanisms and sufficient evidence to identify those responsible for fires and link them to the haze affecting Malaysia.
The proposal comes as Putrajaya faces criticism, although the government has ruled out formal diplomatic protests or legal proceedings against Jakarta for now.
Evidence Is Key to Enforcing a Haze Law
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/9f4e92fb7a8d71d26c838c1269e58d591180fa220ba3ee6e68a6814e3558635a" />
Syed Ibrahim said there was no legal obstacle to introducing a transboundary haze law, provided it went through the required legislative process and received Parliament&rsquo;s approval.
However, passing legislation would not automatically make enforcement straightforward. Authorities would need to establish the source of pollution, identify those responsible and demonstrate a connection between specific fires and the haze experienced in Malaysia.
This would require information such as fire coordinates, land ownership records, the companies or individuals operating on affected land, and evidence linking their activities to cross-border pollution. Gathering such information would involve extensive investigations before prosecution could proceed.
Syed Ibrahim said a dedicated law could deter open burning that threatens public health and the environment across national borders.
&ldquo;Diplomacy must produce measurable action, while enforcement action must be based on evidence and the law,&rdquo; he told Parliament.
Malaysia Rules Out Formal Action Against Jakarta
&nbsp;<img src="https://r2.myc.my/dc7fa43822cadffabe0e9afb461a665e404dc60e12fa6876ff11a7b92d47397d" />
The proposal comes amid frustration over haze affecting parts of southern and central Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Selangor and Johor.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia did not intend to pursue legal proceedings or issue a formal diplomatic note against Indonesia, citing the need to preserve bilateral relations. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also said the government has exhausted available channels for engaging Jakarta.
Worsening air quality has disrupted daily life, with in-person classes suspended across eight education districts in Selangor, affecting hundreds of thousands of students.
The situation has prompted criticism of Indonesia&rsquo;s fire containment efforts and ASEAN&rsquo;s wider response. Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has urged affected ASEAN countries to coordinate a stronger response, including restricting corporate financing for companies implicated in illegal slash-and-burn practices. Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has also called for Malaysia to take a firmer diplomatic stance.

Malaysia Offers Firefighting Assistance
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/bdc377bd7f94220d09ecec5d21ab1c273655cf7c74702ef63b125a9aa50f8516" />
Malaysia is continuing to work with Indonesia to tackle forest and land fires at their source.
Syed Ibrahim said Malaysia formally offered assistance on 9 September, including water bombing, amphibious aircraft and cloud seeding. Indonesia has agreed to accept assistance to tackle fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, with deployment arrangements coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and relevant agencies.
Malaysia is also exploring a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia on environmental protection and climate change. Proposed cooperation includes preventing forest and peatland fires, sharing hotspot data, managing high-risk areas and coordinating early intervention.
Malaysia has also proposed a Sustainable Haze Fund under ASEAN to support regional fire prevention, alongside science diplomacy and the bloc&rsquo;s ambition to achieve a haze-free region by 2030.
During the parliamentary discussion, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid questioned how quickly assistance could be deployed while fires continued, noting that haze can cross borders regardless of whether the fires have been declared a national disaster.
Singapore&rsquo;s Law Offers a Possible Model
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/c948f0e86c06efa69a80a4d18274cc00dfe71e5d6138d11863a9eec61ffb30c8" />
Singapore&rsquo;s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act 2014 allows legal action against entities whose conduct contributes to haze pollution in Singapore, including when relevant activities take place overseas. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has indicated that Singapore could pursue legal action against companies linked to the fires, while also offering firefighting assistance to Indonesia.
Malaysia would need to ensure its own legislation could be enforced in practice. Investigating activity in another country and proving a link between specific fires and cross-border pollution can be difficult, making reliable evidence essential.
The recurring haze has renewed questions about public health, environmental responsibility and accountability across the region. Malaysia is continuing diplomatic engagement while examining its legislative options, but the key challenge will be ensuring cooperation delivers measurable improvements and that those responsible for harmful burning can be held accountable.

Malaysia Considers Transboundary Haze Law As Worsening Pollution Raises Pressure for Action

A 16-year-old student was arrested after allegedly attacking a teacher with an axe at Tunku Putra-HELP International School in Kuching, Sarawak, on 21 October, leaving the teacher injured and prompting a police investigation.
The incident occurred at around 8am when the teacher reportedly attempted to confiscate the weapon from the student. Police later confirmed that the weapon involved was an axe or hatchet, contradicting earlier reports circulating online that described it as a penknife.
The case has raised renewed concerns about school safety in Malaysia, particularly following several recent incidents involving serious violence at educational institutions.
Teacher Injured While Attempting to Confiscate Axe
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/7a1f4a59ad5f552a0cb0c7de1d04e43bb9a841d8d647c0cc49f6450d27ab4e8c" />
According to the school, the incident took place in its TK4 area on Wednesday morning. The teacher was injured while attempting to intervene and take the weapon from the 16-year-old student.
Police received information about the incident at approximately 8.03am through the MERS 999 emergency line. The teacher was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.
In its statement, Tunku Putra-HELP International School said the teacher was in a stable condition and recovering well, with no critical injuries reported. The victim reportedly sustained a cut to the hand during the incident.
School staff managed to restrain the student and escort him to the principal&rsquo;s office, where he remained under supervision until the authorities took over the case. The student&rsquo;s parents were also informed.
The school confirmed that students in the affected classroom managed to evacuate safely and that no other injuries were reported.
Police Investigating Axe Attack and Firecrackers
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/6b17bc8a24a5ec686e60dd317921d57710555fa4a0950aecc712f3a7f1665992" />
Acting Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Saifullizan Ishak confirmed that the student had allegedly brought an axe and firecrackers onto the school premises.
The clarification came after conflicting accounts circulated on social media, with some early reports describing the weapon as a penknife. Police subsequently confirmed that the incident involved an axe or hatchet.
Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including how the student brought the items into the school and what led to the confrontation.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing hurt using a weapon or dangerous object, and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957, relating to the possession of explosives.
The student was later released on police bail, according to subsequent police updates, as investigations continued. Authorities have not yet publicly established the motive behind the incident.
Livestream of Attack Circulates Online
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/11777b9e57e53a1a3ede4a25de19b0c16540ea11bc42cb10f0b8b9a213fc9096" />
The incident attracted widespread attention after footage allegedly showing the attack began circulating on <a href="https://x.com/world24x7hr/status/2112911541721039163">social media</a>.
Police said the student had livestreamed the incident from his perspective. The recording reportedly lasted approximately 12 minutes and six seconds before being removed from Facebook following action by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Authorities have urged the public not to circulate graphic footage or spread unverified claims about the incident. The circulation of such material can cause further distress to those affected and potentially complicate efforts to manage sensitive information surrounding an ongoing investigation.
Members of the public have also been warned against speculating about the student&rsquo;s identity, family background or alleged motives without verified information.
School Tightens Security After Incident
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/235ec6c6cfc65999be36f25027542ac66a98516a4658140c7abbf93d7147f3e4" />
Following the attack, Tunku Putra-HELP International School closed its premises early on police advice to facilitate investigations. Parents and guardians were notified and asked to arrange for their children to be collected.
The school subsequently confirmed that classes would resume after receiving clearance from the authorities. It has reviewed its existing safety protocols and introduced additional security measures, including the deployment of three auxiliary police officers on campus.
Appropriate security checks will also be conducted on individuals entering the school, while management is considering further measures to strengthen long-term campus safety.
The school said its senior leadership team would hold assemblies to address students&rsquo; concerns and arrange counselling support for those who need it. The Sarawak Education Department has also contacted the school and offered assistance to those affected.
Calls for Stronger School Safety Measures

The incident has prompted calls for schools and relevant authorities to review their security arrangements and strengthen efforts to prevent violence.
Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Sarawak chief Azlan Norita described the incident as a serious reminder that the safety of teachers and students must remain a priority. He called for a thorough and transparent investigation, with appropriate action taken in accordance with the law.
Azlan also stressed that preventing similar incidents requires more than physical security measures. He highlighted the importance of students&rsquo; emotional wellbeing, mental health, social environment and disciplinary development, alongside the involvement of parents, teachers and counsellors.
The incident comes amid wider concerns about school violence in Malaysia. In October, a 16-year-old student was charged over the death of a schoolmate at SMK Dato' Seth in Yong Peng, Johor. Other cases involving alleged student-on-student violence and bullying have also prompted calls for stronger safeguards in schools.
While each case has its own circumstances, the incidents have intensified public discussion about how educational institutions can better protect students and staff.
As police continue investigating the Kuching school axe attack, attention will remain on establishing what happened and whether further measures are needed to prevent similar incidents. The case also highlights the importance of combining effective campus security with early intervention, student support and a safe environment for everyone in the school community.

The incident has renewed calls for stronger school security and better protection for both students and teachers.

K-Pop Duo AKMU Set To Perform In Kuala Lumpur As Part Of 2027 Asia Tour

Malaysia has banned civil servants from using the popular navigation app Waze for official duties, citing concerns over data security, location tracking and national sovereignty. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also encouraged Malaysians to consider switching to TuJu, a locally developed navigation application managed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).
The decision followed the third meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) for 2026, chaired by Anwar on 20 October. The government&rsquo;s move has sparked renewed debate about digital privacy, the security of location data and whether local alternatives are ready to replace established navigation platforms such as Waze and Google Maps.
Civil Servants Ordered to Stop Using Waze Immediately
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/e3c6c791097a62cf9979856ae1492a81035060c93ff8bc1edafced4174bd08ad" />
According to a circular dated 20 October issued by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, civil servants have been instructed to stop using Waze with immediate effect.
Ministry secretaries-general, heads of federal departments, statutory bodies, state government secretaries and local authorities have been directed to communicate and enforce the decision among their respective personnel.
The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), under the National Security Council in the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Department, has been designated as the coordinating agency for questions and requests for clarification regarding the directive.
However, the restriction applies to civil servants, and the government has not announced a nationwide ban on Waze for members of the public. Anwar has instead encouraged Malaysians to consider TuJu as an alternative.
Why Is Malaysia Raising Concerns About Waze?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/77f04b1c8e11a1a59e6ee04325778d83a2167317c6cf1b7752226563e834cc9a" />
Anwar said the recommendation was prompted by potential security risks involving users&rsquo; personal information and data on their movements. He pointed out that Waze is subject to Israeli laws, raising concerns about how location information could be handled under a foreign legal framework.
Waze was founded in Israel in 2008 before being acquired by Google in 2013. Although it is now owned by the American technology company, Waze Mobile remains associated with Israel and operates under a legal framework linked to the country.
Like other navigation services, Waze can collect information such as location data, routes, destinations, searches and device details, depending on how the app is used and configured. When collected over time, location information can potentially reveal travel routines, frequently visited places and movement patterns.
Such information could raise security concerns, particularly when it involves government personnel or sensitive locations. Nevertheless, NACSA has reportedly acknowledged that there is no evidence Waze has analysed users&rsquo; movement patterns for the purposes raised in the discussion.
The government&rsquo;s position centres on reducing potential exposure and strengthening Malaysia&rsquo;s control over sensitive information, rather than establishing that Waze has misused its users&rsquo; data.
In a statement on social media, Anwar stressed that the security of Malaysians&rsquo; personal information and identities could not be compromised as the country continues to expand its digital services.
What Is TuJu, Malaysia&rsquo;s Local Navigation App?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/183bd85b15dd3b9f42bd62b125344cd5fe4d4bbfbc5456553d1f0f6af2eaa237" />
TuJu is a Malaysian navigation application developed by Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd in November 2025, with the aim of providing motorists with navigation and highway-related information.
The app offers several features designed to assist drivers, including:
<ul>
<li>Route information, travel distances and estimated arrival times.</li>
<li>Toll fare calculations for journey planning.</li>
<li>Traffic updates and access to highway CCTV snapshots.</li>
<li>Information on rest and service areas (R&amp;R), including available facilities.</li>
<li>Details of nearby petrol stations and emergency assistance.</li>
<li>Options to report road incidents and closures.</li>
</ul>
TuJu also connects with the MyJalan platform, which allows road users to submit complaints about issues such as potholes and damaged roads.
Its highway-focused functions could be useful for motorists who frequently travel on Malaysian expressways. However, having access to road information is not the same as providing the seamless, reliable navigation experience many drivers expect from established apps.
TuJu Faces Questions Over Navigation Accuracy and Usability
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/604a44868af132ef8c3d8551131460bd8e01e4a9bfe86c7da36d3b35614ac838" />
Despite the government&rsquo;s endorsement, TuJu has faced criticism from users and reviewers who have questioned whether it is ready to replace Waze or Google Maps for everyday driving.
Reported shortcomings include confusing turn-by-turn instructions, limited lane guidance at complicated junctions and inconsistent navigation information. These issues could be particularly problematic around Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, where closely spaced highway exits and interchanges require clear, timely directions.
Other concerns include missing features, differences between its Android and iOS versions, and the lack of support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These omissions may inconvenience drivers who rely on their vehicle&rsquo;s built-in infotainment system for navigation.
TuJu&rsquo;s data collection practices have also attracted attention. Users may be required to register or sign in before accessing its navigation features, while its privacy notices describe the collection of location, movement and usage information, among other data.
This has raised questions about how much personal information the app needs to collect and how that information is managed. The government&rsquo;s promotion of a locally developed alternative does not, by itself, establish that the app collects less data or offers stronger privacy protections than its competitors.
For TuJu to gain wider acceptance, improvements to navigation accuracy, reliability, compatibility and transparency around data handling will be important. Motorists are unlikely to abandon familiar services unless the alternative can meet their everyday needs.
Government Strengthens Wider Cybersecurity Measures
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/7a42610a7c606d8077e37fe940316d0ee8c9fff6087dd569d3467ad940fa4b92" />
The recommendation to switch navigation apps was one of several cybersecurity matters discussed during the National Cyber Security Committee meeting.
Other topics included the implementation of the Cyber Security Act 2024, the security of MyDigital ID and the protection of National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII).
Anwar also highlighted preparations for future cybersecurity threats posed by quantum computing, including the development of post-quantum cryptography (PQC), alongside emerging risks associated with autonomous artificial intelligence.
The government is also working to strengthen Malaysia&rsquo;s integrated identity ecosystem, with MyKad serving as a physical credential and MyDigital ID supporting digital transactions. These initiatives are intended to protect personal information as more government services move online.
The broader objective is to improve the country&rsquo;s digital resilience while ensuring that public services remain secure and reliable.
What Does the Waze Decision Mean for Malaysian Motorists?
For now, civil servants must comply with the directive when carrying out their official duties, while members of the public remain free to choose their preferred navigation apps.
The government&rsquo;s recommendation places TuJu in the spotlight as Malaysia seeks to strengthen its digital sovereignty and reduce potential security risks associated with foreign technology platforms.
However, the decision also highlights a challenge facing locally developed digital services: earning public trust requires more than domestic ownership. Reliable performance, clear privacy policies and practical features will be essential if TuJu is to become a genuine alternative to Waze and Google Maps.
For Malaysian motorists, the key question is whether TuJu can deliver the accuracy and convenience needed for daily journeys while addressing concerns about data security. Until its reported shortcomings are resolved, its ability to replace more established navigation apps remains uncertain.
