Social media personality and entrepreneur Khairul Aming recently expanded his food ventures with the opening of Rembayung, a Malay cuisine restaurant located in Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant, which began operations in early January, marks Khairul’s latest move from digital influence to brick-and-mortar business, following the success of his previous food-related projects.
Rembayung was designed to celebrate traditional Malay flavours in a modern dining setting, offering dishes that resonate with both nostalgic home-style cooking and contemporary tastes. Since its launch, the restaurant has consistently drawn crowds, with long queues forming daily — a testament to Khairul Aming’s strong public appeal.
Social Media Buzz and Public Reception

From the moment it opened, Rembayung quickly became one of the most talked-about dining spots on Malaysian social media. Customers shared photos, reviews and videos across platforms such as Threads, TikTok and Instagram, praising the food, atmosphere and overall experience.
Many diners noted that Rembayung felt like a personal extension of Khairul Aming himself, given his hands-on approach and frequent updates online. The restaurant’s popularity has been fuelled not only by its menu, but also by public curiosity over how a digital creator translates his brand into a physical dining experience.
Unexpected Disruption During Heavy Rain

However, the restaurant’s momentum was briefly disrupted on the evening of 7 February, when heavy rainfall caused water to enter part of the premises during service hours. Videos shared online showed water seeping into the dining area, prompting staff to act quickly to manage the situation.
Khairul Aming later shared a video on Threads showing his employees cleaning the affected area while ensuring operations continued. Several customers were asked to change seats temporarily to maintain comfort and safety.
Shortly after, Khairul publicly apologised for the inconvenience, acknowledging the discomfort faced by diners during the incident.
“I’m truly sorry to customers who had to move tables,” he said, explaining that the unusually heavy rain had led to a leak. He added that the situation was quickly brought under control and that dinner service resumed as normal later that evening.
Online Speculation and Growing Questions
As videos of the incident circulated online, speculation began to grow regarding the cause of the leak. Some netizens questioned whether the building’s design or glass panels were responsible, while others raised concerns over construction quality given that the restaurant had only recently opened.
The incident sparked widespread discussion, with many calling for clarification from those involved in the construction of the restaurant.
Here’s some of the comments:

In response, CD Builders Sdn. Bhd., the contractor responsible for building Rembayung, issued a statement to address the claims. The company clarified that the water did not enter through the glass panels, dismissing speculation circulating online.
According to the contractor, the incident was caused by an overflowing roof gutter, which occurred when a downpipe became clogged with leaves during the storm. This blockage prevented rainwater from draining properly, causing it to spill over and seep into the interior of the building.
The contractor explained that this was the first time Rembayung had experienced such heavy rain and strong winds since opening, describing the situation as unexpected and beyond initial control. Despite calling the incident unforeseen, CD Builders stated that it had taken full responsibility for resolving the issue. The company assured the public that improvements would be made to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
“We have taken responsibility and will enhance the drainage system to ensure this does not happen again,” the contractor said, adding that customer comfort and safety remain a priority.
The contractor also expressed hope that customers would be able to enjoy their meals comfortably moving forward.
Swift Response and Looking Ahead
Khairul Aming confirmed that repairs were carried out immediately and reiterated that the leak had been fully addressed. He thanked customers for their patience and understanding, emphasising that his team acted quickly to minimise disruption.
While the incident briefly raised concerns, many online users praised both Khairul Aming and the restaurant staff for their transparency and calm handling of the situation. Several netizens also pointed out that teething issues are not uncommon for newly opened establishments, particularly during extreme weather conditions.
As Rembayung continues to operate, the restaurant remains a major draw for diners, with public interest showing little sign of slowing — proving that even amid unexpected challenges, the brand’s appeal remains strong.
