Just days after launching its latest technology, AI company Anthropic has been ordered by the United States government to suspend access to two of its newest and most powerful models &mdash; Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 &mdash; over national security concerns.
What Is Claude Fable 5?

For those unfamiliar with the name, Claude is Anthropic&rsquo;s family of artificial intelligence models designed to compete with systems such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
Claude Fable 5 is the company&rsquo;s latest publicly available flagship model, built to handle complex tasks such as software development, scientific research, data analysis and advanced reasoning. It is based on the even more powerful Claude Mythos 5, which was previously only available to a limited number of organisations because of its highly advanced cybersecurity capabilities.
Anthropic has described Fable 5 as one of its safest and most capable AI models, with built-in safeguards designed to prevent misuse in sensitive areas such as cyberattacks and biological research.
Why Has The US Government Stepped In?

According to Anthropic, the US government issued an export control directive requiring the company to suspend access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for foreign nationals due to national security concerns.
Although officials have not publicly explained the exact reason behind the decision, Anthropic believes it relates to concerns that someone may have found a way to &ldquo;jailbreak&rdquo; the model. In AI terms, jailbreaking refers to techniques that bypass safety restrictions and make the system produce responses it was originally designed to block.
The company says it reviewed the reported issue and concluded that it only revealed a handful of previously known, relatively minor software vulnerabilities. Anthropic also argued that other publicly available AI models are capable of identifying similar issues without needing any jailbreak methods.
Despite disagreeing with the government's assessment, the company said it had no choice but to comply with the directive.

Rather than limiting access only to foreign nationals, Anthropic has temporarily disabled Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for everyone around the world.
The company explained that this broad shutdown was the quickest way to ensure compliance with the order while it works with authorities to resolve the issue. Existing users attempting to access the models are now automatically redirected to older Claude versions, while all other Anthropic AI models remain available.
Anthropic maintains that it believes the situation is based on a misunderstanding and hopes the restrictions can be lifted as soon as possible.
A Major Debate Over AI Regulation
