A low-budget Chinese animated film that was widely mocked online for its crude graphics and confusing storyline has unexpectedly become one of the country&rsquo;s biggest box-office surprises of 2026.
Niu Lai, which can be translated as The Cow Is Coming or The Bull Is Coming, initially appeared destined to disappear without a trace after earning just around 7,000 yuan (RM4,000-RM4,500) during its first 10 days in cinemas.
Instead, viral criticism turned the film into an internet phenomenon, with curious viewers buying tickets simply to see &ldquo;how bad&rdquo; the animation really was. Its box-office earnings subsequently surged into the millions, with reports putting its cumulative takings at more than 11.4 million yuan (around RM6.7 million).
A Two-Person Animation Made Over Five Years

Niu Lai was created by Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang, a mother-and-son team who reportedly handled much of the film themselves, including writing, directing, animation and voice acting.
The film took around five years to complete and was produced on an extremely modest budget. Reports vary on the exact figure, with estimates ranging from several hundred yuan to around 20,000-30,000 yuan depending on which production costs are included.
It was released in China on 5 August 2026, initially screening in around 245 cinemas. However, the film received virtually no conventional marketing, with no major promotional campaign, interviews or trailer driving audiences to theatres.
Its main promotional material was reportedly a poster featuring traditional Chinese ink-wash artwork.
That would soon change dramatically.
From Box-Office Flop To Viral Sensation

For its first nine to 10 days in cinemas, Niu Lai attracted fewer than 300 viewers and earned only around 7,169-7,705 yuan (~RM4,312 &ndash; RM4,635).
The turning point came when clips and screenshots showing the film's unusual animation began circulating widely on Chinese social media platforms.
Viewers mocked its stiff character movements, crude 3D models, unusual textures and confusing storyline, with some describing the animation as &ldquo;worse than AI-generated content&rdquo; and even calling it a &ldquo;disaster-level&rdquo; production.
Rather than destroying the film's reputation, however, the criticism had the opposite effect.
People became increasingly curious about the film and started buying tickets specifically to experience the bizarre animation for themselves.
One viral sentiment summed up the phenomenon: you might regret spending 80 minutes watching it, but you might regret it even more if you never see it.
FOMO Turns Mockery Into Millions

The sudden popularity of Niu Lai is a textbook example of FOMO, or the fear of missing out, driving online trends.
As more people posted about the film, others did not want to be left out of what had effectively become a massive inside joke. Watching Niu Lai became less about enjoying a conventional animated film and more about being part of a viral cultural moment.
Social media users shared clips from screenings, reacted to awkward scenes and created memes featuring the film's characters. Some even edited its bull character into posters for famous films, further increasing its visibility online.
What started as &ldquo;this movie is terrible&rdquo; gradually became &ldquo;I need to watch this because everyone is talking about it.&rdquo;
The result was a remarkable box-office turnaround, with Niu Lai eventually surpassing 11.4 million yuan (~RM6.7 million) according to reported figures.

Interestingly, not everyone was mocking the film.
Some viewers began praising Niu Lai precisely because of how crude and apparently handmade it looked. In an entertainment landscape increasingly filled with highly polished AI-generated content, some audiences saw the film's imperfections as proof of genuine human effort.
Its rough animation was described by some netizens as &ldquo;pure handmade&rdquo; or &ldquo;human slop&rdquo; &mdash; a tongue-in-cheek contrast to the growing criticism surrounding low-effort AI-generated content online.
The irony was hard to miss: a film criticised for looking worse than AI was gaining support because audiences believed its flaws represented something more authentically human.
Niu Lai Starts Competing With Hollywood Blockbusters

While the film's earnings remain nowhere near those of major blockbuster productions, its ability to go from earning only a few thousand yuan to millions is what has made its story so unusual.
The sudden demand also prompted cinemas to add more screenings, with some reportedly going as far as creating their own promotional materials because the film had so little conventional marketing behind it.
Not Everyone Is Celebrating The Film&rsquo;s Success

Despite its viral success, Niu Lai has also sparked debate within China's film industry.
State-run Beijing News criticised cinemas for increasing screenings of a film it argued did not meet expected standards for theatrical animation. The commentary warned that cinemas risk damaging audience trust if they continue allocating screens to films purely because of viral attention, rather than their quality.
The debate raises a bigger question about whether social media virality and curiosity can genuinely be considered a sustainable form of film marketing.
Niu Lai may have demonstrated that negative publicity can generate extraordinary attention, but industry observers have cautioned against treating the phenomenon as a formula that other filmmakers can easily replicate.
A Viral Hit Built On Being &lsquo;Bad&rsquo;
Niu Lai may not have been designed to become a blockbuster, but its bizarre journey has turned it into one of the most unexpected movie stories of 2026.
From an almost invisible release and a box-office haul of just a few thousand yuan, the film became a viral meme, attracted audiences through FOMO and curiosity, and eventually earned millions at the Chinese box office.
Whether audiences genuinely love Niu Lai or simply want to see what all the fuss is about remains debatable.
But one thing is clear: sometimes, the internet doesn't need a movie to be good to make it a hit &mdash; it just needs everyone to want to see how bad it is.
