The United States has rejected a claim by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang that Washington once offered the party assistance to topple the Malaysian government during former US president Barack Obama&rsquo;s visit to Malaysia in 2014. The allegation has since sparked political debate and led to three police reports being lodged over claims of possible foreign interference in Malaysia&rsquo;s political affairs.
What Did Abdul Hadi Claim?

Abdul Hadi made the allegation during his winding-up speech at the 72nd PAS Annual Muktamar on 5 September 2026. He claimed that several PAS leaders were invited to a meeting at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur while the party was still part of the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition.
According to Hadi, then PAS assistant secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and his political secretary at the time, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, attended the meeting.

Dalam ucapan penggulungan Muktamar PAS ke-72, Hadi berkata tawaran itu dibuat ketika beberapa pemimpin PAS menghadiri satu majlis di Kedutaan AS semasa bekas Presiden AS, Barack Obama melawat ke Malaysia. Menurutnya, Setiausaha Agung PAS, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan dan Naib Presiden PAS, Dato&rsquo; Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar yang ketika itu merupakan Setiausaha Politiknya, tidak terpengaruh dengan tawaran berkenaan. &ldquo;Dia nak ajak bincang, sanggup nak jatuh kerajaan, nak ambil alih kerajaan. Amerika sanggup tolong ini,&rdquo; katanya. Hadi turut menceritakan bahawa ketika bertemu duta AS, beliau pernah ditanya oleh pihak AS tentang calon Perdana Menteri yang dicadangkan PAS. &ldquo;Dia tanya, siapa PAS cadang jadi Perdana Menteri? Saya kata, siapa Amerika setuju? Siapa Amerika sokong, siapa dia?&rdquo; ujarnya. Hadi menegaskan tumpuan utama bukanlah menentukan siapa yang bakal menjadi Perdana Menteri, sebaliknya memastikan perpecahan dan krisis politik dapat ditangani demi membolehkan semua pihak kembali menjalankan tanggungjawab masing-masing. &ldquo;Yang penting, kita buat kerja. Kita selesaikan perpecahan, selesaikan krisis. Hadi alleged that representatives from the US side discussed the possibility of helping PAS bring down the then-Barisan Nasional (BN) government and take over the administration. He said the PAS representatives rejected the idea and did not allow themselves to be influenced by the alleged offer.
He also claimed that the US ambassador subsequently requested a separate meeting with him, which he attended alongside then-PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali.
Hadi Says US Ambassador Asked Who PAS Would Choose As Prime Minister

Hadi said the ambassador asked him who PAS would propose as prime minister if the party eventually took over the government.
His reported response was: &ldquo;Who does America agree with?&rdquo;
Hadi said he later recounted the exchange to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who he claimed approved of his response. The anecdote drew laughter from delegates at the PAS gathering.
The allegation is notable because it refers to a period when PAS was part of Pakatan Rakyat, the opposition coalition that later dissolved. BN remained in federal power at the time, before eventually losing the 2018 general election to Pakatan Harapan.
Takiyuddin Confirms The Meeting &mdash; But Not All Of Hadi&rsquo;s Claims

While the US has rejected Hadi&rsquo;s account of an attempt to influence Malaysia&rsquo;s political leadership, one part of the story has been separately confirmed by Takiyuddin.
Takiyuddin acknowledged that PAS leaders did meet representatives from the US Embassy in 2014. However, his account differed from Hadi&rsquo;s description of what was discussed.
He said an embassy representative had asked whether PAS had plans to bring down the BN government at the time. Takiyuddin said PAS did not give a decision or position because the party did not want foreign countries interfering in Malaysia&rsquo;s political affairs. He stressed that PAS had never sought foreign intervention in the country&rsquo;s politics.
The confirmation of the meeting therefore establishes that PAS representatives met US officials, but does not independently substantiate Hadi&rsquo;s wider claim that Washington offered assistance to overthrow the government.
US Embassy Rejects The Allegation

The US Embassy in Malaysia issued a firm response on 6 September.
David H. Gamble Jr., the embassy&rsquo;s Charg&eacute; d&rsquo;Affaires ad interim, said the United States had never sought to determine Malaysia&rsquo;s political leadership.
&ldquo;Any account to the contrary is false,&rdquo; he said in a statement.
The statement did not provide further details about the embassy meeting described by Hadi and Takiyuddin, but directly rejected the central allegation that the US had sought to shape or change Malaysia&rsquo;s political leadership.
Three Police Reports Lodged

The controversy has now moved beyond political statements, with three police reports lodged by PKR members over Hadi&rsquo;s allegations.
The reports were filed at the Cheras police station by Bandar Tun Razak PKR branch vice-chief V. Jonathan, PKR Wanita chief Mazlina Osman and PKR Youth deputy chief Amarul Hisham Jalil.
Jonathan said the reports were intended to ensure the allegations concerning a possible attempt to overthrow or weaken Malaysia&rsquo;s government and parliamentary democratic system could be investigated according to the law. Police have confirmed receiving a report and said the matter would be referred to the Wangsa Maju district police headquarters.
The reports do not, by themselves, establish that the alleged offer took place.
PAS Questions The Reaction To Hadi&rsquo;s Claim

PAS has also pushed back against the political reaction to the controversy.
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari questioned what he described as an overreaction from Pakatan Harapan politicians, pointing out that Hadi had not accused PH of involvement in the alleged incident.
He also noted that the US Embassy had already denied the allegation and said there were legal avenues available to resolve disputes over the competing accounts.
Meanwhile, DAP figures have called on Hadi to provide evidence supporting his claims, adding another layer to the political dispute.
What Happens Next?
For now, the key accounts remain sharply different. Hadi maintains that PAS was approached about a possible change of government and that a US ambassador asked about the party&rsquo;s preferred prime minister. Takiyuddin has confirmed that PAS leaders met US Embassy representatives and that a question about bringing down BN was raised, but did not corroborate every detail of Hadi&rsquo;s version. The US Embassy, meanwhile, has categorically denied ever seeking to determine Malaysia&rsquo;s political leadership.
With police reports now filed, the controversy could develop further if authorities decide to investigate the allegations. Until then, the claim remains disputed, with no independent evidence publicly establishing that the United States offered PAS assistance to topple the Malaysian government in 2014.
