After more than two decades, Malaysia is getting a new generation of its national identity card.
The National Registration Department (JPN) has unveiled the MyKad Generasi Baharu, featuring a redesigned appearance, upgraded chip technology and 53 security features, up from 23 on the existing version.
The new MyKad officially begins its phased rollout on 17 September 2026, but Malaysians do not need to rush to replace their existing cards.
Here&rsquo;s everything you need to know about the new MyKad, including its new features, Touch &rsquo;n Go changes, application process and whether your current card is still valid.
What&rsquo;s new about the MyKad design?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/7f9aba38e1d4f23261e70dc9547ba2bc9287ecf9d2cd87119f4b5bcc1023c232" />
The new MyKad retains its familiar blue colour scheme but comes with a noticeably different layout.
The Malaysian flag is now positioned at the upper left, while the cardholder&rsquo;s main photograph has also been moved to the left. A smaller secondary portrait, known as a Ghost Image, is included as an additional security feature.
The physical chip has been moved to the back of the card, which also features a QR code intended for verification and enforcement purposes.
JPN says the redesigned card is made from high-durability polycarbonate, designed to better withstand bending, cracking and everyday wear.
New MyKad has 53 security features
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/bde3c82fb42993aa7bd7b58ffd212168056f94ca2d0007b791ae12fd30787897" />
One of the biggest upgrades is the increase in security features from 23 to 53.
These include a Dynamic Security Hologram, ultraviolet (UV) security elements, microtext, Guilloche patterns, laser engraving, rainbow printing and a transparent window.
Personal details and the cardholder&rsquo;s photograph are laser-engraved into the card&rsquo;s core layers. This makes it considerably more difficult to alter or remove the information without damaging the card.
The smaller Ghost Image provides another layer of protection against attempts to manipulate or replace the cardholder&rsquo;s photograph.
The new MyKad also uses intricate Guilloche patterns and UV elements that can help with authentication and make counterfeiting more difficult.
New MyKad supports NFC, but not Touch &rsquo;n Go
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/7343c9d7e49918ebd47d841bd84f4533e535a333e25313cabaceebd537e37ac8" />
The upgraded MyKad comes with a dual-interface chip, allowing it to work with both conventional contact-based readers and contactless NFC technology.
However, the introduction of contactless technology does not mean the new MyKad can continue to function as a Touch &rsquo;n Go card. JPN has confirmed that Touch &rsquo;n Go functionality has been removed from the new MyKad.
Those who use Touch &rsquo;n Go for tolls, parking, public transport or other supported services will need to use a separate Touch &rsquo;n Go card or Touch &rsquo;n Go eWallet instead.
Existing MyKad holders should also note that Touch &rsquo;n Go functionality on older cards has its own validity period.
Do Malaysians need to replace their current MyKad?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/ba12a201be38557dd59fcf4d3403ad519940b20ed234ca4bd4d4aa560461f136" />
Short answer: no.
JPN and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail have advised Malaysians not to rush to JPN offices when the new MyKad becomes available.
Existing MyKad cards will remain valid and can continue to be used for daily transactions as long as they are in good condition and functioning normally.
The new version will instead be introduced gradually as Malaysians apply for new cards or need to replace their existing ones.
However, holders of older identification cards, including Kad Pengenalan Plastik (KPP), Kad Pengenalan Bermutu Tinggi (KPT) and MyKad without a Ghost Image, will need to switch to the new generation MyKad.
The phased rollout is also intended to prevent congestion at JPN counters. There are currently around 24 million MyKad cards in circulation, while JPN processes roughly 180,000 to 200,000 applications and replacements each month.
Where can you get the new MyKad?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/ffc30617c6470ba1f9e0580ce8000af42bd0ee1142a7bd5ec6fc90bddd89c601" />
From 17 September, 40 selected JPN branches and UTC locations equipped with printing facilities will be able to produce the new MyKad on the same day.
These include locations in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Penang, Perak, Kedah, Perlis, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
Among the locations are JPN Petaling Jaya, JPN Putrajaya, JPN Kuala Lumpur, UTC Selangor, UTC Kuala Lumpur, JPN Johor, JPN Penang, JPN Sabah and JPN Sarawak.
For branches without on-site printing facilities, applications can still be made, but processing and collection will take around five working days.
Will your MyKad number or SARA balance change?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/e2e28280c9d15d132e533dd093d84ad1714dfe984000f5bcb01581a3cf78e4a6" />
No. Getting the new MyKad will not change your existing 12-digit identification number. Your personal information will continue to be based on JPN&rsquo;s official records.
For Malaysians receiving Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) or other government assistance linked to their MyKad, replacing the physical card will also not erase existing balances or affect eligibility. The relevant information is maintained in the respective government systems, with the MyKad used to verify the recipient&rsquo;s identity.
JPN has also said the new MyKad will continue to support government and other services that require MyKad verification, including transactions involving banks and government programmes.
How much does the new MyKad cost?
Replacing your existing MyKad is not necessarily free.
The applicable fee depends on the type of application and JPN&rsquo;s current rates. Malaysians should therefore not assume they can exchange a perfectly functioning MyKad for the new version at no cost.
JPN has also encouraged those who need to replace their MyKad to make an appointment beforehand where applicable.
For now, if your current MyKad is still working properly, there is no need to rush to replace it. The MyKad Generasi Baharu will gradually become the standard version as new cards are issued and older cards are eventually phased out.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has warned foreign countries against &ldquo;insulting&rdquo; Indonesia over its recurring forest and land fires, as the country faces mounting pressure over transboundary haze, financial market concerns and potential energy export restrictions.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting on 21 October, Prabowo said Indonesia would not accept what he viewed as disrespect from other countries. He also threatened to expose companies responsible for the fires and revoke permits belonging to businesses found to have broken the law.
The remarks come as Indonesia confronts several issues that could strain its regional relationships and investor confidence.
Haze Crisis Puts Pressure on Indonesia
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/4693c5bf4379552d32f1f545f1c89b4ebfb2cd3cdaad4e09d42a40858d0185df" />
More than 1.9 million hectares of land were reportedly affected by fires in the nine months to September, according to Nusantara Atlas. The fires have been linked to dry conditions associated with El Ni&ntilde;o, slash-and-burn land clearing and drained peatlands, which can make fires difficult to extinguish.
Smoke from the fires has affected communities in Indonesia and contributed to haze across neighbouring countries, including Malaysia, Singapore and Timor-Leste. The recurring problem has raised concerns about public health, environmental damage and regional cooperation.
Indonesian authorities are reportedly investigating 98 corporations in connection with the fires. However, the investigations do not mean every company has been found responsible, with any legal or regulatory action dependent on the evidence gathered.
Malaysia and Singapore have offered assistance to help Indonesia tackle the fires. Jakarta, however, has maintained that it is capable of managing the situation itself.
Prabowo&rsquo;s threat to revoke permits signals a potential focus on enforcement, although its effectiveness will depend on whether authorities identify those responsible and take meaningful action.
Residents Take Legal Action Over Haze
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/e32859b784de5b2441990407b5b3da45f975eebd1317712d76c6110e4cf26ee9" />
The crisis has also prompted legal action within Indonesia. A court hearing in Pontianak is considering a lawsuit brought by residents who accuse the state of negligence in responding to the haze. The suit names Prabowo and 26 other officials.
The case highlights the domestic consequences of recurring fires, as affected residents seek accountability for the harm caused by smoke pollution. It also puts pressure on the government to demonstrate that it is protecting communities and enforcing environmental regulations.
While Prabowo&rsquo;s remarks suggest businesses could face consequences, identifying companies, establishing legal responsibility and preventing future fires remain separate steps requiring transparent investigations and consistent enforcement.
MSCI Raises Concerns Over Indonesia&rsquo;s Financial Market
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/398c07d0b6841fdf1df19ffa23a70dbd70bae9c2b647bcec9208c77bf46e307b" />
Indonesia is also facing scrutiny from global index provider MSCI, which has proposed considering a reclassification of the country from an emerging market to a standalone market in 2027.
The proposal follows concerns about share ownership transparency, suspicious trading activity and the effectiveness of market oversight. A change in classification could affect how international investors assess or access Indonesian equities, although no final decision has been made.
Prabowo has said Indonesia is not afraid of the prospect. Nevertheless, the announcement has added to market uncertainty. Reports said a two-day sell-off wiped approximately US$82 billion (RM347 billion) from the market&rsquo;s value.
Although separate from the haze crisis, the market concerns have placed Indonesia under further scrutiny over accountability and governance. Addressing MSCI&rsquo;s concerns would require credible improvements in transparency and supervision, rather than statements of defiance alone.
Indonesia Raises Possibility of Energy Export Restrictions
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/aa5ee5f90523a8347669ca35b1161eba59462d6d58fdb42716b04ab49353316c" />
Indonesia&rsquo;s energy policy has added another dimension to the tensions. Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the country could stop exports to countries that disrespect Indonesia and might not renew existing gas export contracts.
He did not identify which countries could be affected. Indonesia supplies natural gas to several markets, including Japan, China, Singapore and South Korea. Singapore&rsquo;s gas supply contracts with Indonesia are due to expire at the end of 2028, making future negotiations important for both sides.
The comments do not confirm that exports will be halted. Any decision would need to account for contractual obligations, commercial interests and wider diplomatic consequences. Using energy supplies as leverage could create uncertainty for buyers while affecting Indonesia&rsquo;s reputation as a reliable supplier.
Multiple Challenges Require Different Solutions
Prabowo&rsquo;s warning comes as Indonesia faces pressure on several fronts: recurring fires affecting neighbouring countries, a lawsuit over the government&rsquo;s response, questions about financial market transparency and uncertainty surrounding future energy exports.
These issues share broader questions of accountability and public trust, but each requires a different response. The haze crisis calls for effective fire prevention, transparent investigations and action against proven offenders. MSCI&rsquo;s concerns require stronger market disclosure and oversight, while energy diplomacy will depend on how Indonesia balances national interests with its commitments to trading partners.
Indonesia has pushed back against what it considers disrespectful outside criticism. However, easing tensions will depend not only on defending its sovereignty, but also on demonstrating measurable progress on the issues raising concern at home and abroad.

Indonesia faces mounting pressure as the ongoing haze crisis, market uncertainty and Prabowo’s warning over energy exports put regional relations to the test.

Prabowo Warns Countries Against Insulting Indonesia As Haze Crisis and MSCI Downgrade Threaten Relations

Ken Kutaragi, widely known as the &ldquo;Father of PlayStation&rdquo;, has weighed in on Sony&rsquo;s controversial plan to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games, saying he understands why gamers are upset but believes continuing to manufacture discs is no longer economically viable.
The former Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman and engineer behind the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 shared his views in an interview with Video Games Chronicle (VGC) at the Game Republic New Horizons event in Middlesbrough, UK.
His comments come amid growing backlash from gaming enthusiasts following Sony&rsquo;s announcement that it plans to discontinue physical disc production for new PlayStation game releases from January 2028. While many players continue to defend physical copies, Kutaragi believes the industry is moving towards a future built around digital distribution and network-connected platforms.
Ken Kutaragi Says Physical Discs Have Become a Symbol of Game Ownership
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/3c2d5851b500db4244adc5df6d31db714c06b91367751b4ca12757d3f3fc86c1" />
Kutaragi acknowledged that physical game discs represent more than just a way to install and play games. For many players, owning a disc provides a sense of security and control over their purchases.
&ldquo;I understand that physical discs have become a metaphor for &lsquo;owning&rsquo; games. I really understand that mentality,&rdquo; he told VGC.
However, he questioned whether physical media remains necessary in an increasingly connected world, comparing the situation to smartphones, where users generally rely on digital services rather than physical formats to access their content.
He argued that people have become comfortable trusting network-connected devices to retain access to their digital purchases, suggesting that console gamers could eventually adopt a similar mindset.
&ldquo;I really understand why some people are upset, but I don&rsquo;t think it&rsquo;s economically reasonable. Maybe it&rsquo;s a mentality issue,&rdquo; he added.
Although Kutaragi recognises the emotional attachment gamers have to physical copies, his comments suggest he sees the shift towards digital gaming as a practical response to changing consumer habits and the economics of the industry.
Sony&rsquo;s Plan to End Physical PlayStation Discs in 2028
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/b5292501116e0385690410288ad6d6b4bdf0a3cea78106cfcf03e1b07e76fdae" />
Sony announced that it intends to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation game releases from January 2028, a move that has prompted criticism from players who prefer buying boxed copies.
The decision reflects the broader growth of digital game distribution, with Sony previously describing the transition as a natural direction for the business amid increasing consumer preference for digital media.
Nevertheless, the announcement has raised concerns about game ownership, preservation and long-term access to purchased titles.
Unlike physical copies, digital purchases typically provide a licence to access a game rather than an unrestricted ownership right. Access can be affected by licensing terms, platform policies and the continued availability of online services.
Physical discs also offer practical advantages for some players, including the ability to lend or resell eligible games, collect boxed editions and play supported titles without relying entirely on digital storefronts.
These concerns have fuelled calls for Sony to reconsider its plans, with some gamers even advocating boycotts. The debate has also intensified as major releases explore collector&rsquo;s editions that contain merchandise but do not include a physical copy of the game.
PlayStation Could Become More Than Just a Gaming Console
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/c8e6958b3839744c5468a1d999a4518e82131c39855430bb5dbea7afd2879dbb" />
Kutaragi also suggested that Sony&rsquo;s changing approach reflects a broader transformation in how the company views PlayStation.
He pointed out that Sony Interactive Entertainment now includes people with backgrounds in streaming and online services, including those associated with Gaikai, the cloud gaming company Sony acquired in 2012.
According to Kutaragi, this may explain why the company increasingly views PlayStation as a platform for delivering digital content rather than simply a dedicated gaming console.
He acknowledged that this approach is understandable in an era when internet connectivity is widespread, but said it has created friction with dedicated gaming enthusiasts who continue to value traditional console experiences.
His views are consistent with predictions he made years ago. In 2006, Kutaragi suggested that digital distribution and network connectivity would eventually reduce the need for physical media, potentially eliminating the need for hard drives as games increasingly move towards streaming.
However, Kutaragi left Sony in 2007 and is no longer involved in running PlayStation. His comments therefore represent his personal perspective, rather than an official statement from Sony.
Could AI and Cloud Gaming Eventually Eliminate Consoles?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/027c5010a197f425813dcf277b22291ba2765cc986982b52fad09f80c1d3ccd0" />
Beyond the physical disc debate, Kutaragi raised concerns about rising consumer hardware prices, which he linked to component shortages and the increasing cost of developing powerful machines.
He described current hardware prices as unhealthy for the industry, arguing that manufacturers need to find more effective ways to deliver technology to consumers.
His proposed solution involves making greater use of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. If these technologies reach their full potential, Kutaragi believes gaming companies could eventually deliver high-performance experiences without requiring players to own dedicated consoles.
&ldquo;We won&rsquo;t need any console,&rdquo; he said when discussing the potential of AI and cloud computing, while making clear that his remarks were not an official Sony position.
For now, physical PlayStation games remain available, and Sony&rsquo;s planned January 2028 transition has not eliminated the current market for boxed releases. However, Kutaragi&rsquo;s comments highlight the growing divide between the industry's push towards digital distribution and gamers&rsquo; desire to retain greater control over their collections.
Whether players will eventually accept a digital-first future remains uncertain, particularly as questions surrounding game preservation, licensing and access continue to shape the debate.

As PlayStation moves towards a digital-only future, gamers are still fighting to keep physical game discs alive.

PlayStation Founder Ken Kutaragi Calls Physical Disc Backlash A “Mentality Issue” Ahead of Sony’s 2028 Shift

BTS fans heading to Singapore this December will have more to look forward to than the K-pop group's highly anticipated concerts, as the city prepares for a month-long celebration inspired by the global superstars.
Running from 1 to 31 December 2026, BTS THE CITY ARIRANG Singapore will transform popular attractions, cultural institutions and entertainment destinations across the island with themed light shows, art installations, fireworks, music experiences and other activities celebrating the group's music and ongoing world tour.
Announced on 19 October by BTS' management agency Big Hit Music, under HYBE, in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), the initiative marks the first and only stop in Southeast Asia. It follows previous editions in Seoul, Busan, Las Vegas, London and New York, bringing the immersive BTS experience to Singapore for the first time.
BTS to Perform Four Nights at Singapore National Stadium
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/ea85a3556af56d417051c0e5b43484fc0e083adb56c4d2c6045760128c9a5032" />
The citywide celebration will coincide with BTS' four scheduled concerts at the National Stadium on 17, 19, 20 and 22 December.
While concert tickets may be difficult to secure, the month-long programme gives fans additional opportunities to celebrate the group beyond the stadium. Major attractions across Singapore will host themed experiences, allowing visitors to combine their BTS fandom with sightseeing, entertainment and cultural activities.
The initiative is designed to turn Singapore into an immersive destination for fans, with participating venues incorporating BTS music and the group's latest album, ARIRANG, into their attractions and programmes.
Jewel Changi Airport, Museums and Wildlife Attractions Join the Celebration
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/2168f9982ca14c4097e3dfb5af279ad61ef295e20b2b4954317d00fb8a7c68c1" />
One of the main highlights will be at Jewel Changi Airport, where its iconic Rain Vortex will feature a themed light and music show inspired by BTS.
At the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, Exploria, its immersive multimedia attraction, will receive a landmark-themed takeover. Visitors can also explore a special art trail at National Gallery Singapore, where BTS music will be paired with works featured in the Pop after Pop: Art Around Us exhibition.
Meanwhile, the National Museum of Singapore will host themed light and sound installations, adding another stop for fans looking to experience the celebration through visual and audio displays.
These activations will bring BTS-themed experiences into some of Singapore's best-known attractions, extending the festivities beyond traditional concert venues.
Fireworks, Drone Shows and a BTS-Themed Rave

Fans seeking more high-energy entertainment will have several options throughout December.
Universal Studios Singapore, located at Resorts World Sentosa, will feature a fireworks display choreographed to BTS music, alongside other themed experiences within the theme park.
Sentosa Island will also join the festivities with a BTS-inspired rave and drone show, a themed race and immersive installations. The Kallang, which includes the area surrounding the National Stadium, will host interactive experiences spread across multiple themed zones.
For nightlife enthusiasts, Zouk Singapore will stage opening and closing night takeovers featuring dedicated music and experiential programming.
Together, these events will offer fans different ways to enjoy the group's music, whether through large-scale visual spectacles, interactive attractions or dedicated music events.
Singapore Landmarks to Glow in ARIRANG Red
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/ef5a649d570d1ab8575f6417fa1eca00364f6a605d39ab1984aa06841b51791e" />
Beyond the individual attractions, Singapore's cityscape will also become part of the celebration.
From 8 to 22 December, landmarks around Marina Bay and along the Singapore River will light up in red each night, reflecting the signature colour associated with BTS' ARIRANG album and tour.
The participating landmarks announced so far include Anderson Bridge, Cavenagh Bridge, Clemenceau Bridge, Coleman Bridge, Elgin Bridge, Gardens by the Bay, Millenia Tower, Ord Bridge, OUE Bayfront, Singapore Flyer, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, The Helix Bridge and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore.
The coordinated illuminations are expected to add a distinctive visual element to Singapore's waterfront and skyline during the concert period, giving fans and visitors more opportunities to take photographs and enjoy the celebrations around the city.
Singapore Tourism Board Calls It a Major Citywide Project
&nbsp;<img src="https://r2.myc.my/3f35f797e111ded44e906d0ad107e0f5c8736980c729f651b08162de876dd222" />
Oliver Chong, assistant chief executive of the international group at STB, described the initiative as the largest citywide destination project the tourism board has collaborated on with a recording artiste.
He said hosting the Southeast Asian debut of BTS THE CITY ARIRANG reflects Singapore's ability to attract major international entertainment properties and reinforces its position as a destination for world-class live entertainment.
The tourism board also expects the programme to welcome BTS fans from Singapore and overseas, potentially encouraging visitors to explore different parts of the city throughout the month.
Further information about participating partners and additional activations is expected to be announced in due course.
BTS Fans Await More Details on Tickets and Event Schedules
Although the main attractions and concert dates have been announced, details such as individual activity schedules, ticketing arrangements and admission prices for specific experiences have yet to be confirmed.
Fans planning a December trip should therefore look out for further announcements from the Singapore Tourism Board, HYBE and the participating venues before finalising their itineraries.
With four BTS concerts and a month of music-themed attractions, Singapore is set to offer fans a wider celebration of ARIRANG beyond the live performances. For those unable to attend the concerts, the citywide programme could still provide a chance to experience the excitement surrounding one of K-pop's biggest groups.

BTS THE CITY ARIRANG Singapore: Month-Long Celebration To Take Over Landmarks This December

Waze has rejected allegations that it collects sensitive government information or allows users&rsquo; personal data to be exploited, following Malaysia&rsquo;s decision to prohibit civil servants from using the navigation app for official duties.
In a statement to Reuters on Thursday, 22 October, a Waze spokesperson described the allegations as completely false, adding that the platform operates under strict privacy policies designed to protect user data and comply with global data protection standards.
The response came a day after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the restriction, citing concerns about government information security and personal data. He also encouraged Malaysians to consider locally developed alternatives, including TuJu, a navigation app developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd.
However, TuJu has faced mounting criticism over its reliability following a surge in downloads. Technical disruptions have forced the temporary suspension of its main turn-by-turn navigation feature, raising questions about whether the local app is ready to replace established platforms.
Waze Rejects Allegations Over User Data
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/57c41ada94e069340620d738e03c77c1fd2a47ca820b9a25af377d56505ffe22" />
Waze&rsquo;s statement directly challenges concerns raised by the Malaysian government about the security of information collected through the application.
Anwar announced the restriction on 21 October, citing potential risks involving sensitive government information and personal data. The government also encouraged the public to explore Malaysian-developed navigation services.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo subsequently explained in the Dewan Rakyat that the restriction was partly related to Waze&rsquo;s terms of service, which place the application under Israeli law. He said this raised questions about the legal remedies available to Malaysians should a dispute arise.
The government was also concerned about location privacy, including claims that users&rsquo; movements could potentially be tracked even when the application was not actively being used.
Waze, which is owned by Google, maintains that its privacy policies protect users&rsquo; information. Its latest statement provides the company&rsquo;s response to the allegations, although the restriction on civil servants remains in place.
Waze Ban Does Not Apply to All Malaysians
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/475f28591d8a81d8fe39c62904dbc79928b0645cab7803185d6b442018b36e2e" />
Gobind clarified that the restriction applies only to civil servants using Waze while performing official duties. It does not constitute a nationwide ban, and members of the public remain free to use the application.
He also stressed that civil servants are not required to use TuJu exclusively, with other navigation services, including Google Maps, remaining available.
The clarification followed concerns raised by Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, who questioned whether TuJu was sufficiently developed to replace established navigation platforms after trying the app herself.
Gobind acknowledged that TuJu needed further improvements and said the Digital Ministry would work with TuJu, PINTAZ and other relevant parties under the government&rsquo;s GovTech initiative to strengthen locally developed digital services.
Initially designed to provide highway traffic information, TuJu offers features such as selected highway CCTV feeds, toll charges, rest and service area information, and tools for reporting road damage. The government is now looking to expand its coverage to include traffic conditions on roads leading to major highways.
TuJu Faces Technical Problems and User Complaints

Despite renewed attention following the government&rsquo;s announcement, TuJu has struggled to cope with demand while facing criticism over its core navigation functions.
LLM announced that the app was undergoing urgent maintenance after a surge in users overwhelmed its servers. During the disruption, its main turn-by-turn navigation feature was temporarily disabled, although selected highway CCTV feeds and basic information services remained available.
The authority apologised for the disruption, acknowledging that system capacity and server stability needed improvement to accommodate the sudden increase in users.
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/d771391fc6aa47d877a2c30f20d7305764014482b0c45c58fa6edb667a2128f6" />
Beyond the technical disruption, motorists have reported problems with navigation accuracy, confusing directions, missing lane guidance and difficulty locating destinations. Some users have complained that the app provides unreliable instructions around complicated highway interchanges, where missing an exit can significantly affect a journey.
Other reported issues include unreliable traffic information, CCTV feeds that fail to load and the absence of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.
These shortcomings have raised questions about whether TuJu is ready for everyday use, particularly among motorists who depend on accurate, real-time guidance when travelling through busy areas such as Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley.
LLM said it was working with Prosignal Consortium, the Works Ministry and the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) to address system stability, navigation accuracy, data governance and cybersecurity concerns.
The authority has also pledged to improve the app&rsquo;s capacity and overall user experience, although the timing for the full restoration of its navigation function was not specified in the reports provided.
Government Plans to Improve Local Navigation Services
Gobind said the government recognised public feedback about TuJu&rsquo;s shortcomings and would explore ways to improve its capabilities alongside other locally developed services, including PINTAZ.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort to strengthen Malaysia&rsquo;s digital services while addressing concerns about data security and sovereignty.
However, developing a dependable navigation platform requires more than local ownership. Accurate directions, reliable traffic updates, stable servers and a user-friendly interface will be essential if TuJu is to gain public confidence and compete with established alternatives.
For now, the government&rsquo;s restriction remains limited to civil servants carrying out official duties, while the public can continue choosing their preferred navigation applications.
With Waze rejecting the allegations against it and TuJu undergoing improvements, the debate now centres on balancing data security concerns with the practical needs of motorists who rely on dependable navigation every day.

Waze Rejects Malaysia’s Data Security Claims As TuJu Struggles To Replace Navigation App

Malaysia is considering a dedicated law to hold companies and individuals responsible for transboundary haze pollution accountable, as worsening air quality and recurring forest fires increase pressure on the government to secure action from Indonesia.
Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia could introduce legislation similar to Singapore&rsquo;s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act 2014. However, any proposed law would need clear enforcement mechanisms and sufficient evidence to identify those responsible for fires and link them to the haze affecting Malaysia.
The proposal comes as Putrajaya faces criticism, although the government has ruled out formal diplomatic protests or legal proceedings against Jakarta for now.
Evidence Is Key to Enforcing a Haze Law
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/9f4e92fb7a8d71d26c838c1269e58d591180fa220ba3ee6e68a6814e3558635a" />
Syed Ibrahim said there was no legal obstacle to introducing a transboundary haze law, provided it went through the required legislative process and received Parliament&rsquo;s approval.
However, passing legislation would not automatically make enforcement straightforward. Authorities would need to establish the source of pollution, identify those responsible and demonstrate a connection between specific fires and the haze experienced in Malaysia.
This would require information such as fire coordinates, land ownership records, the companies or individuals operating on affected land, and evidence linking their activities to cross-border pollution. Gathering such information would involve extensive investigations before prosecution could proceed.
Syed Ibrahim said a dedicated law could deter open burning that threatens public health and the environment across national borders.
&ldquo;Diplomacy must produce measurable action, while enforcement action must be based on evidence and the law,&rdquo; he told Parliament.
Malaysia Rules Out Formal Action Against Jakarta

The proposal comes amid frustration over haze affecting parts of southern and central Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Selangor and Johor.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia did not intend to pursue legal proceedings or issue a formal diplomatic note against Indonesia, citing the need to preserve bilateral relations. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also said the government has exhausted available channels for engaging Jakarta.
Worsening air quality has disrupted daily life, with in-person classes suspended across eight education districts in Selangor, affecting hundreds of thousands of students.
The situation has prompted criticism of Indonesia&rsquo;s fire containment efforts and ASEAN&rsquo;s wider response. Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has urged affected ASEAN countries to coordinate a stronger response, including restricting corporate financing for companies implicated in illegal slash-and-burn practices. Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has also called for Malaysia to take a firmer diplomatic stance.

Malaysia Offers Firefighting Assistance
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/bdc377bd7f94220d09ecec5d21ab1c273655cf7c74702ef63b125a9aa50f8516" />
Malaysia is continuing to work with Indonesia to tackle forest and land fires at their source.
Syed Ibrahim said Malaysia formally offered assistance on 9 September, including water bombing, amphibious aircraft and cloud seeding. Indonesia has agreed to accept assistance to tackle fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, with deployment arrangements coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and relevant agencies.
Malaysia is also exploring a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia on environmental protection and climate change. Proposed cooperation includes preventing forest and peatland fires, sharing hotspot data, managing high-risk areas and coordinating early intervention.
Malaysia has also proposed a Sustainable Haze Fund under ASEAN to support regional fire prevention, alongside science diplomacy and the bloc&rsquo;s ambition to achieve a haze-free region by 2030.
During the parliamentary discussion, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid questioned how quickly assistance could be deployed while fires continued, noting that haze can cross borders regardless of whether the fires have been declared a national disaster.
Singapore&rsquo;s Law Offers a Possible Model
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/c948f0e86c06efa69a80a4d18274cc00dfe71e5d6138d11863a9eec61ffb30c8" />
Singapore&rsquo;s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act 2014 allows legal action against entities whose conduct contributes to haze pollution in Singapore, including when relevant activities take place overseas. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has indicated that Singapore could pursue legal action against companies linked to the fires, while also offering firefighting assistance to Indonesia.
Malaysia would need to ensure its own legislation could be enforced in practice. Investigating activity in another country and proving a link between specific fires and cross-border pollution can be difficult, making reliable evidence essential.
The recurring haze has renewed questions about public health, environmental responsibility and accountability across the region. Malaysia is continuing diplomatic engagement while examining its legislative options, but the key challenge will be ensuring cooperation delivers measurable improvements and that those responsible for harmful burning can be held accountable.

Diplomatic efforts continue, but will stronger legal action finally hold haze polluters accountable?
