More families in Selangor may now qualify for the Baucar Kita Selangor (BKS) after the state government raised the household income eligibility threshold from RM5,000 to RM8,000 per month.
The latest expansion means households earning between RM5,001 and RM8,000 can now be considered for the financial assistance programme, widening access to support for families dealing with rising living costs and economic uncertainty.
Eligible recipients will receive RM100 per month for six months, giving a total value of RM600. The vouchers can be used for essential household needs, including food, healthcare and education.
Kita Selangor Voucher Eligibility Raised From RM5,000 To RM8,000

The Selangor government announced the revised eligibility threshold on 21 September 2026.
State Executive Councillor for Women&rsquo;s Development and Social Welfare Anfaal Saari said the household income limit had been increased from RM5,000 to RM8,000 and below to allow more families to benefit from the programme.
The BKS was introduced as part of the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package (Pakej Pengukuhan Daya Tahan Selangor), which was established to help residents cope with the impact of rising living costs and economic uncertainty linked to global supply and geopolitical crises.
The programme was initially rolled out in phases, with priority given to more vulnerable groups such as single mothers and heads of hardcore-poor households. Eligibility was subsequently expanded to households earning RM5,000 or less before the latest increase to RM8,000.
With the latest change, more middle- and lower-income households in Selangor can now apply for the assistance.
How Much Is The Kita Selangor Voucher Worth?

Under the current programme, approved recipients receive RM100 each month for six consecutive months, bringing the total value of the assistance to RM600. The distribution is being carried out in phases until December 2026.

<li>Education-related expenses</li>
</ul>
The official BKS portal states that unused balances can be carried forward to the following month, although the total assistance must be used by 31 December 2026. The vouchers are redeemed through the Selangkah app at participating merchants.

While the income threshold has been increased, applicants must still meet other eligibility requirements.
According to the latest announcement, applicants must:

<li>Have a monthly household income of RM8,000 or below</li>

<li>Have only one recipient per household</li>
<li>Not be an active recipient of the Bantuan Kehidupan Sejahtera Selangor (BINGKAS) programme</li>
</ul>
The single-parent category also covers individuals who are single parents following divorce or the death of their spouse.
The official BKS terms also state that being registered for or actively receiving BINGKAS assistance makes an applicant ineligible for BKS.
Existing Applications Will Be Reassessed
For residents who have already applied, the latest changes could also affect the outcome of their applications.
Anfaal said applicants whose cases are still under review, those who were previously rejected, and those currently appealing will have their applications reassessed based on the new eligibility criteria.
This means households that previously exceeded the RM5,000 income threshold may now have another opportunity to qualify, provided they meet the other requirements.

RM131 Million Allocated For Kita Selangor Voucher
The Kita Selangor Voucher is one of the initiatives introduced under the state's broader resilience package.
The Selangor government has allocated RM355.06 million across the first and second phases of the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package to address the effects of supply-related crises and economic uncertainty. Of this amount, RM145.8 million was allocated under Phase One, while RM209.26 million was allocated for 15 new initiatives under Phase Two.
A total of RM131 million has been allocated specifically for the Kita Selangor Voucher programme to help households manage the impact of economic uncertainty.
With the household income threshold now increased to RM8,000, the latest expansion is expected to bring the RM600 assistance to a wider group of families across Selangor.

The department added that it has provided the necessary information to relevant agencies and service providers, while monitoring the progress of the updates to speed up the system adjustment process.

The new-generation MyKad officially began being issued nationwide on 17 September 2026.

Several physical changes have also been introduced. The cardholder&rsquo;s photograph has been moved from the right side to the left, while the physical chip and QR code have been relocated from the front to the back of the card.
The new MyKad also uses a dual-interface chip, allowing it to support conventional contact-based terminals as well as NFC-based contactless communication with authorised devices.
The QR code is intended for identity verification by agencies authorised by JPN. It is not designed to be scanned using a regular smartphone camera.
Touch &lsquo;n Go Functionality Removed

Another major change is the removal of the embedded Touch &lsquo;n Go functionality found in older MyKad cards.

MyDigital ID Online Registration Still Affected

The eKYC compatibility issue also extends to the MyDigital ID registration process.

Instead, users can register through a physical MyDigital ID kiosk or complete pre-registration when applying for their new MyKad at a JPN counter.
Online registration support for the new-generation MyKad is expected to become available from 1 October 2026.
Existing MyDigital ID users are not affected by the issue and can continue using the service as usual.
Existing MyKad Holders Do Not Need To Rush
Despite the rollout of the new-generation MyKad, Malaysians who are still using an existing card do not need to replace it immediately if it remains in good working condition.
JPN has stated that existing MyKad cards remain valid, and the new version is being introduced through a gradual transition.
The department said its priority is to ensure the move to the new-generation MyKad is carried out in an orderly manner without affecting public access to services that require identity verification.
As service providers continue updating their eKYC systems, users with the new card may need to rely on alternative verification methods temporarily. Malaysians can check with their respective service providers for the latest updates before attempting the verification process again.

More than 10 years later, GTA Online is still active and remains an important part of Rockstar&rsquo;s business. Take-Two&rsquo;s recent financial results continue to list GTA Online and GTA V among major contributors to its recurring consumer spending.
That long-term success has placed enormous expectations on GTA VI.
Expectations Are Sky-High For GTA VI

Twitch CEO Teases GTA VI Multiplayer Could Arrive In 2027

Google&rsquo;s Gemini AI model accessed and breached the systems of three real companies during a cybersecurity test in May, marking the first publicly reported case of a Google AI system autonomously gaining access to external company systems.
The incidents occurred during a cybersecurity evaluation conducted by Irregular, an independent AI security testing company. Gemini was supposed to operate within a controlled environment involving fictional companies, but an issue with the testing setup unintentionally allowed the model to access the wider internet.
Once online, Gemini found publicly available information and used it to obtain credentials for websites it believed were part of the authorised test. In one instance, the model repeatedly guessed passwords until it gained access to a protected system. In two others, it found credentials in publicly accessible repositories and used them to enter real company systems.
Google said Gemini stopped in all three cases after determining that it had accessed real companies rather than the simulated targets.
How Gemini Gained Access

According to Google, the AI model was not specifically instructed to attack the three companies. Instead, Gemini was carrying out tasks as part of a cybersecurity assessment when it encountered information that led it towards real systems.
In one case, a fictional company used in the test had the same name as a real company. After unintentionally gaining internet access, Gemini correctly guessed a password belonging to the real company and accessed its service.
In the other two cases, the model searched the internet and found publicly available repositories containing credentials that could be used to access protected systems.

Google Vice-President of Security Engineering Heather Adkins said Gemini stopped each time after recognising that it had reached a real company.
&ldquo;We ensured the three entities were made aware,&rdquo; Adkins said, adding that Google worked with Irregular to make changes to its testing processes.
Irregular said it notified Google and the affected companies in late July. The company added that all known issues on its side had since been addressed and resolved.
Google Says Gemini Stopped Itself

The incidents have raised questions about how AI models behave when given greater access to the internet, computer systems and cybersecurity tools. Google has said the incidents did not represent model misalignment, pointing to the fact that Gemini stopped once it realised it had accessed real companies.
The company also did not initially disclose the incidents publicly. Google said it did not consider the events to require public disclosure because the model stopped and no damage was reported to the affected companies.
However, the incidents were later reported by The Wall Street Journal, prompting Google to confirm what happened.
The distinction is important because the Gemini model was not deliberately directed to target these companies. Nevertheless, its ability to independently search for information, infer or discover credentials and gain access to protected systems demonstrates how AI agents can behave in unexpected ways when they have access to external tools.
Gemini Is Not The Only AI Model Involved

The Gemini incidents are part of a wider series of cybersecurity events involving advanced AI models.
Similar incidents involving OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta have also been linked to cybersecurity testing conducted by Irregular. In those cases, AI models were similarly exposed to the internet during tests that were intended to take place within controlled environments.
Anthropic previously disclosed several incidents involving its Claude models gaining unauthorised access to real third-party systems during cybersecurity evaluations. The company said it identified four incidents in total after reviewing hundreds of millions of transcripts from its testing environments.
The incidents have highlighted a growing challenge for AI developers: testing increasingly capable AI agents requires giving them enough access to realistically assess their abilities, while also ensuring they cannot unintentionally reach real-world systems.
Why AI Safety Is Becoming A Bigger Concern

The latest incidents have intensified debate over the safeguards needed as AI models become more autonomous.
Traditional AI tools generally respond to user prompts without directly interacting with external systems. Newer AI agents, however, can browse the internet, execute code, search databases and interact with computer systems with much less human intervention.
That creates a different set of risks. An AI model does not necessarily need to be deliberately instructed to attack a real system for an unintended security incident to occur. It may simply interpret information or instructions differently from what its developers expected.
Google said the incidents demonstrate the importance of training powerful AI models to behave responsibly, while Irregular said it had taken steps to improve its testing procedures.
At the same time, the repeated appearance of similar incidents involving major AI developers has prompted calls for stronger safeguards and more rigorous independent testing before increasingly powerful models are deployed.
Anthropic Calls For AI Development To Slow Down

The Gemini incidents come as some AI industry leaders are openly questioning the pace at which increasingly powerful models are being developed.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for the AI industry to &ldquo;slow down&rdquo; the development of frontier AI systems, arguing that progress could outpace society&rsquo;s ability to understand and control the technology.
In a September essay, Amodei proposed greater use of independent third-party evaluations, including giving external evaluators access to AI systems so they can assess whether safety measures are being followed and investigate potential incidents. Anthropic said it would commit to one part of the proposal itself.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also expressed support for the idea of &ldquo;pacing the frontier&rdquo;, although different technology leaders have taken different positions on how quickly AI development should proceed.
For now, Google maintains that Gemini&rsquo;s safety measures worked because the model stopped after recognising that it had accessed real companies. But the incident also illustrates why the debate around AI safety is increasingly focused not only on what models can do, but what they might do when given greater autonomy and access to the real world.
As AI systems become more capable, the challenge may be finding the right balance between advancing the technology and ensuring that safeguards can keep pace with it.

Malaysia&rsquo;s new-generation MyKad has only been available nationwide for a few days, but its redesigned layout is already causing compatibility issues with several digital services that rely on electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verification.
The latest service affected is MyDigital ID, where first-time users with the new MyKad are currently unable to complete registration through the usual online process. MyDigital ID has confirmed that online registration support for the redesigned card is expected to become available from 1 October 2026.
In the meantime, new MyKad holders can register through physical MyDigital ID kiosks or request pre-registration when applying for their card at a Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) counter.
The issue follows reports that the new MyKad has also been rejected during eKYC verification on Touch &lsquo;n Go eWallet, Ryt Bank, AEON Bank and GXBank, suggesting that some digital services are still updating their systems to recognise the new identity card.
MyDigital ID Cannot Yet Recognise The New MyKad

The MyDigital ID app currently appears to rely on the layout of the previous-generation MyKad when scanning the card for identity verification.
When a new MyKad is scanned, users can encounter an error saying the wrong ID has been detected and asking them to ensure the correct MyKad is inside the scanning frame.
This is likely linked to several physical changes introduced with the new MyKad. The cardholder&rsquo;s photograph has moved from the right side to the left, while the physical chip has been relocated from the front to the rear.
The new MyKad also comes with 53 security features, compared with 23 on the previous version, alongside a dual-interface chip supporting both contact-based reading and contactless NFC.
MyDigital ID has confirmed that first-time users with the redesigned MyKad cannot currently complete the normal online registration process.
However, existing MyDigital ID users are not affected. Those who replace their old MyKad with the new version can continue using their existing MyDigital ID certificate without having to register again.
New MyKad Users Can Register At MyDigital ID Kiosks

For Malaysians registering for MyDigital ID for the first time with the new MyKad, the temporary solution is to use a physical MyDigital ID kiosk.

Users should also note that the new MyKad needs to be inserted differently because its chip is now located on the back. The card must be turned over before being inserted into the reader.
Another option is available to Malaysians applying for or replacing their MyKad at a JPN counter. Applicants can inform the officer that they want to pre-register for MyDigital ID during the MyKad application process.
After pre-registration, users can continue the MyDigital ID registration process on their smartphone without needing to scan their MyKad through the usual eKYC process.
New MyKad Also Faces eKYC Problems With Banks And E-Wallets

MyDigital ID is not the only digital service experiencing compatibility problems.

For example, a new MyKad holder attempting to verify their identity through Touch &lsquo;n Go eWallet encountered an &ldquo;Invalid ID type&rdquo; error after scanning the card.
The exact scale of the problem remains unclear, as it is not yet known how many other banks, e-wallets or digital platforms may need to update their systems.
However, the early issues highlight how services that rely on automated MyKad recognition may need to update their eKYC systems to support the redesigned card.
What Has Changed With The New MyKad?

The new-generation MyKad is more than a cosmetic redesign. It introduces a range of security and technology upgrades, including a polycarbonate construction, dynamic security hologram, UV security elements, microtext, a transparent window, Guilloche patterns, QR code and a dual-interface chip.
One of the biggest functional changes is the relocation of the physical chip from the front to the rear.
The new chip supports both contact and contactless NFC communication. However, the new MyKad no longer includes built-in Touch &lsquo;n Go functionality.
This means Malaysians who previously used their MyKad as a Touch &lsquo;n Go card for tolls or public transport will need to use a separate Touch &lsquo;n Go card or another supported payment method.
Existing MyKad Holders Do Not Need To Rush

Despite the compatibility issues, Malaysians using the previous-generation MyKad do not need to rush to replace it simply because the new card has been introduced.

Existing cards also remain valid for government-related matters, including services and assistance that rely on MyKad verification, subject to the relevant eligibility requirements.
For now, Malaysians with a functioning older MyKad can continue using it while banks, e-wallet providers and other digital services update their systems to support the new card.
MyDigital ID Online Registration Coming On 1 October

A cryptocurrency hack has taken an unusual turn after an attacker stole around 4,000 Bitcoin worth approximately US$320 million from the Liquid Network, only to return most of the funds after the vulnerability behind the incident was patched.
The attacker, whose identity remains unknown, has been described by Liquid Network as a &ldquo;purported white-hat hacker&rdquo; &mdash; an ethical hacker who exploits security vulnerabilities to expose weaknesses rather than simply taking funds for personal gain.
While around 85% of the stolen Bitcoin has now been returned, roughly 598 BTC, worth about US$47 million, remains outstanding. The incident has also forced Liquid Network to pause activity while further security measures are put in place.
What Is Liquid Network?

Liquid Network is a Bitcoin sidechain developed by Blockstream and launched in 2018. It was designed to make Bitcoin transactions faster and more efficient, particularly for cryptocurrency exchanges and financial institutions that need to settle trades quickly.
The main Bitcoin blockchain can take time to confirm transactions, especially when the network is busy. Liquid works differently by allowing users to move Bitcoin into the network and receive an equivalent amount of Liquid Bitcoin (L-BTC), which can then be transferred more quickly.
The network is managed by the Liquid Federation, a group of more than 80 companies including cryptocurrency exchanges, infrastructure providers and other digital-asset businesses. Around 15 federation members operate the network&rsquo;s functionary nodes that play a key role in processing transactions.
How Did The Bitcoin Hack Happen?

The incident was not the result of a stolen password or compromised private key.
Instead, the attacker exploited a software vulnerability involving Elements, the open-source technology underpinning Liquid Network.
According to reports, the vulnerability allowed the attacker to generate around 4,000 L-BTC without first depositing the equivalent amount of real Bitcoin. The attacker then moved the newly created tokens through SideSwap, a legitimate platform used to convert L-BTC back into Bitcoin.
SideSwap processed the transaction as valid because it could not distinguish the artificially created L-BTC from legitimate tokens. The Liquid Federation subsequently released nearly 4,000 real BTC to the attacker.
Liquid said the transaction was authorised through its peg-out system and that the relevant cryptographic key itself had not been compromised. Other digital assets on the Liquid sidechain were not affected.
The Hacker Says They Are A &lsquo;White Hat&rsquo;
The story became even more unusual when the attacker began communicating with Liquid and Blockstream through messages recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. The hacker reportedly told the network&rsquo;s maintainers to fix the vulnerability first and patch every affected node, promising to return the Bitcoin once the system had been secured.
That led to the attacker being described as a possible white-hat hacker. In cybersecurity, white-hat hackers may deliberately exploit vulnerabilities to demonstrate that a system can be breached, sometimes returning stolen assets after a fix or receiving a bounty for identifying the flaw.
However, the label remains unconfirmed, and the hacker&rsquo;s identity and motivations have not been established.
Around 3,400 Bitcoin Returned

The unusual promise was partially fulfilled after Blockstream said the affected bridge nodes had been patched.
Following confirmation of the fix, the attacker returned approximately 3,400 BTC to the Liquid Federation&rsquo;s wallet, leaving about 598.5 BTC, worth roughly US$47 million, still in the attacker&rsquo;s possession. Despite the return of most of the funds, Liquid Network has not immediately resumed normal activity.
The network remains paused while Blockstream and Federation members carry out additional fixes, address the wider security implications and prepare for a safer restart. Users have also been warned not to send Bitcoin to Liquid peg-in addresses until the network confirms that operations have resumed.
One Of The Biggest Crypto Heists Of 2026

The scale of the incident makes it one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts reported this year.
The attack also highlights a wider cybersecurity problem affecting the digital-asset industry. Blockchain security firm PeckShield recorded 50 major crypto hacks in August 2026, with total losses of around US$136.3 million. That was actually lower than July&rsquo;s losses despite the number of attacks increasing by 67%.
Liquid&rsquo;s case is particularly notable because the attackers did not simply gain access to a wallet and transfer existing funds. Instead, the vulnerability allowed fraudulent L-BTC to be generated and ultimately exchanged for genuine Bitcoin held in reserve.
Crypto Security Faces Another Major Test
The Liquid Network incident comes after several other high-profile cryptocurrency security breaches this year.
A separate vulnerability involving Coldcard hardware wallets led to hundreds of Bitcoin being drained from affected devices, while a South Korean government agency was also embarrassed after accidentally revealing a cryptocurrency wallet recovery phrase in a public photograph. The latter incident resulted in digital assets worth millions of dollars being moved from the wallet.
Together, these incidents show that cryptocurrency security risks can come from many different points &mdash; including software vulnerabilities, transaction infrastructure and even basic operational mistakes.
For Liquid Network, the immediate priority is now recovering the remaining funds and ensuring that the vulnerability cannot be exploited again.
What started as a US$320 million Bitcoin heist has therefore become one of the stranger crypto security stories of 2026: an attacker drained almost the entire reserve, demanded that the vulnerability be fixed, and then returned most of the stolen Bitcoin.
The twist may sound almost too convenient, but the remaining US$47 million serves as a reminder that, white hat or not, the incident is far from completely resolved.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the changes during his National Day address on 30 August, saying the government was acting ahead of Budget 2027 because cost-of-living pressures could not wait until October. BUDI95 Quota Returns To 300 Litres

Under BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95), eligible Malaysians can purchase subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre.
From 1 September, the basic monthly eligibility limit has increased from 200 litres to 300 litres, essentially restoring the quota that was in place when BUDI95 was first introduced in September 2025.
The government said around 16 million Malaysians benefit from subsidised RON95 under the programme. The adjustment is automatic for existing eligible BUDI95 recipients, meaning they do not need to submit a new application simply because the quota has increased.
The original reduction to 200 litres took effect on 1 April 2026 as the government responded to higher global crude oil prices and increased subsidy costs.
Why Was The Quota Reduced In The First Place?

The 200-litre limit was introduced as a temporary measure amid significant pressure on the government's fuel subsidy bill.
At the time, the government said the adjustment was necessary as international oil prices rose sharply, increasing the cost of maintaining subsidised fuel. However, the lower quota also prompted complaints from some motorists, particularly those who travel long distances for work, family commitments or business.
With the latest adjustment, the government says it has taken into account the needs of Malaysians who rely heavily on their vehicles, including those travelling long distances and small traders who depend on vehicles for their livelihoods.
The Finance Ministry also said the restoration was made possible by better fuel supply management, stronger enforcement, improved economic performance and the government's current financial capacity.
BUDI Diesel Quota Can Go Up To 400 Litres

There is also an increase for eligible diesel vehicle owners.
The basic BUDI Diesel monthly entitlement has been restored to 300 litres, with subsidised diesel remaining at RM2.10 per litre.
Eligible owners of private diesel-powered pick-up trucks and jeeps can apply for an additional 100 litres, bringing their total monthly entitlement to up to 400 litres.
More than half a million eligible diesel vehicle owners can apply for the additional allocation.
Those who were already approved for the extra 100 litres do not need to apply again, as their entitlement will be automatically adjusted to 400 litres from 1 September. Those who have not applied can submit their application through the BUDI MADANI portal.
No Need To Reapply For The Basic Increase
For existing BUDI95 and BUDI Diesel recipients, the return to the higher basic quota is automatic, subject to their existing eligibility.
This means eligible BUDI95 users will receive the revised 300-litre monthly limit, while eligible BUDI Diesel recipients will receive the applicable revised allocation without having to restart the application process.
For pick-up and jeep owners seeking the additional 100 litres under BUDI Diesel, a separate application is still required unless they have already received approval previously.
Government Says Subsidies Must Still Be Protected From Misuse

Despite increasing the quotas, the government said it would continue strengthening measures to prevent subsidy leakage, smuggling and misuse.

When the programme was launched, the government said the 300-litre ceiling was already sufficient for the overwhelming majority of private motorists, based on national vehicle usage data.
The latest restoration therefore does not represent a return to an unrestricted blanket petrol subsidy.

The move expands TNG eWallet&rsquo;s growing financial services ecosystem, giving its more than 27 million verified users access to another form of regulated financing through an app many already use for their daily transactions.
What Is GXBank FlexiCredit?

As the amount borrowed is repaid, the available credit limit is replenished, meaning users can access the remaining facility again without submitting a new application. GXBank says there are also no annual or processing fees, while interest is only charged on the amount actually drawn down.
Repayment periods range from six to 60 months, with flat interest rates starting from 3.78% per annum, equivalent to an effective interest rate of 6.45% per annum.
Apply Without Opening A New Bank Account

Who Can Apply For FlexiCredit?

However, approval is not guaranteed simply because someone meets the basic requirements.

Malaysia is exploring ways to reform its tax system by studying whether selected Goods and Services Tax (GST) mechanisms could be incorporated into the existing Sales and Services Tax (SST).
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the aim is to create a more progressive and efficient tax system, but stressed that the government is not looking to simply reinstate the previous 6% GST.
The Finance Ministry has been instructed to study the proposal before presenting its findings to the Cabinet.
Hybrid GST-SST Plan Still In Early Stages

Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan has been given time to prepare a report on the proposed model.

Fahmi said there is currently no confirmed timeline for the study, including whether any changes could be included in Budget 2027.
For now, the move does not represent a return of GST. The government is only studying whether certain GST features could improve the existing SST framework.
What Could A Hybrid GST-SST System Include?

Anwar has stressed that SST would remain the foundation of Malaysia's tax system.

However, SME Association of Malaysia president Chin Chee Seong warned that a complicated system could increase business costs, which may ultimately be passed on to consumers.
SAMENTA president Datuk William Ng similarly pointed to delayed ITC refunds during the previous GST era as a major concern.
He said businesses had already invested in systems for GST, SST and e-invoicing, and should not be forced to absorb another round of software, training and compliance costs.
What Could The New Model Look Like?

Experts have suggested several possible approaches.
One option would be to have GST as a broader consumption tax while retaining SST or other targeted taxes for selected goods and services.

Tax expert Harvindar Singh said Malaysia could also study international examples such as India and Canada, where broader consumption taxes operate alongside more targeted taxation.
However, he warned that simply placing GST on top of the existing SST could create unnecessary complexity and further tax-on-tax effects.
Concerns Over Cost Of Living

Beyond revenue collection, the biggest concern is how any tax reform would affect ordinary Malaysians.

The concern is that higher costs for businesses could eventually be passed on to consumers through higher prices.
