Universiti Malaya (UM) student Ummi Umairah Bakhit has stood by her controversial remarks about public donations to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, insisting that she will not apologise despite facing criticism, online harassment and threats.
The economics undergraduate attracted widespread attention after a video of her questioning donations to help Najib pay a RM50 million court-imposed fine went viral on social media. Her comments, made during the International Young Future Leaders Summit in Kuala Lumpur, sparked debate about corruption, political accountability and freedom of expression in Malaysia.
While some praised her for speaking out, others criticised her choice of words, accusing her of being disrespectful and lacking adab, or manners.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Ummi Umairah reaffirmed her position, saying she would not withdraw her remarks or apologise for questioning the fundraising campaign.
&ldquo;I stand by the question I asked and will not apologise,&rdquo; she wrote, adding that donating hard-earned money to help wealthy and influential individuals was, in her view, an immoral act.
She also expressed hope that more Malaysians would find the courage to speak up about corruption and integrity without fear. Ummi Umairah rejected suggestions that her views were politically motivated, maintaining that she had consistently advocated for integrity, equality and justice while opposing corruption.
She cited her participation in a demonstration concerning former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, as well as her previous efforts to highlight unequal opportunities at UM.
&ldquo;I have never picked and chosen which issues to fight for. I attended the demonstration against Azam Baki. I have also spoken out about inequality of opportunities at my university. From day one, I have been consistent in my stance,&rdquo; she said.
Student Responds to Criticism and Online Harassment

Addressing the backlash, Ummi Umairah argued that describing an action as stupid was not the same as insulting the person responsible for it.
&ldquo;Calling an act stupid isn&rsquo;t illegal. It&rsquo;s a strong word for an act that defies belief. Critical thinking is fading. People read, but don&rsquo;t think, research, or understand. Context gets twisted. Calling an act stupid is not the same as calling a person stupid,&rdquo; she wrote.
She also expressed disappointment with what she described as the influence of cyberbullying, political obsession and a feudal mentality on public discourse. The controversy has extended beyond criticism of her remarks, with Ummi Umairah revealing that she had received online threats and experienced harassment following the circulation of the video.
Speaking to the New Straits Times, she said some individuals had taken photographs from her Instagram account without permission, while others threatened that she could be expelled from the university. She also reported receiving insulting comments about her physical appearance.
Despite the attacks, she maintained that she would not be intimidated into abandoning her position.
Higher Education Minister Zambry Defends Student's Right to Speak

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has defended Ummi Umairah's right to express her views, stressing that she would not face action from his ministry over the incident.
In a TikTok video, Zambry described the reported intimidation, threats and verbal abuse against the student as unacceptable. He also urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to examine social media posts and accounts involved in the backlash, including the possibility that fake accounts were being used.
He encouraged Ummi Umairah to lodge a police report to allow the authorities to investigate the threats.
&ldquo;I want to stress that she has the right to speak. I hope freedom of expression can be exercised responsibly, respectfully and based on facts,&rdquo; he said.
Zambry also cautioned political figures against using the student to advance their own agendas, warning that she risked becoming a tool for political propaganda.

Separately, UM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman previously confirmed that no disciplinary action had been taken against Ummi Umairah, adding that students should be given room to express their views.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim had also reportedly assured her that she would not be expelled over the controversy.
Why Ummi Umairah Questioned Donations to Najib
<blockquote class="twitter-video" data-status="hidden">
Agreed and nicely said. "And the 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗽𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 thing I have watch in my entire life, is people 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 for our former Prime Minister Najib Razak, someone is clearly has a world worst corruption case 1MDB and its clearly linked to corruption". Walajib is confirm to be among those stupidest 😁😁😁

</blockquote>
The controversy began during a dialogue session at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, featuring former youth and sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
During the discussion, Ummi Umairah questioned how future leaders could oppose corruption while members of the public were donating money to help Najib pay a RM50 million court-imposed fine.
She described the donations as the &ldquo;stupidest thing&rdquo; she had witnessed, referring to the former prime minister's legal cases linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and his conviction in the SRC International case.
She also raised the Tabung Haji controversy and sought the panellists' views on corruption and political accountability.
Her remarks prompted contrasting reactions, with supporters highlighting the importance of questioning public figures, while critics argued that her language was inappropriate.
Controversy Sparks Debate Over Freedom of Expression
Ummi Umairah's refusal to apologise has kept the issue in the public spotlight, raising questions about how Malaysians discuss corruption, political accountability and controversial public figures.
The intervention by the higher education minister has also drawn attention to the need to address online threats and harassment, particularly when individuals express unpopular or contentious opinions.
While disagreements over her choice of words continue, Ummi Umairah maintains that her criticism was directed at an action rather than an individual.
For now, she remains firm in her position, calling on Malaysians to speak up about corruption and integrity without fear of intimidation. The controversy has become part of a wider national conversation about freedom of expression, cyberbullying and the role of young people in challenging established political narratives.

KFC Malaysia has contributed 20,000 face masks to support vulnerable and underserved communities across the Klang Valley amid recent air quality concerns, extending its community outreach efforts beyond food assistance.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) and The Lost Food Project (TLFP), aims to provide additional protection to homeless individuals, underserved families and residents of charity homes and People's Housing Programme (PPR) communities.
According to QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd, the contribution will be distributed in two phases through its non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners, which collectively reach nearly 8,000 beneficiaries across the Klang Valley.
The initiative reinforces KFC Malaysia's commitment to supporting communities facing daily challenges while building on its existing efforts to improve food security and reduce waste.
KFC Malaysia Extends Support Beyond Food Assistance

The 20,000 face masks were officially handed over to representatives from KSK and TLFP during a ceremony at Menara QSR in Petaling Jaya on 15 October 2026.
The first phase of the initiative involved distributing face masks through the organisations' outreach networks to individuals who need assistance. On 17 October, KFC Malaysia representatives joined volunteers from both NGOs to distribute face masks and KFC meal packs to members of the homeless community at Pusat Khidmat Gelandangan Medan Tuanku in Kuala Lumpur.
Through their respective community programmes, KSK and TLFP support thousands of individuals and families, including residents of charity homes and PPR communities. Their wider outreach networks also enable assistance to reach communities beyond the Klang Valley.
The face mask contribution comes amid concerns over haze and air quality affecting parts of Malaysia, providing additional support to vulnerable groups who may have limited access to essential protective supplies.
KFC Harvest Programme to Continue Distributing Aid

The second phase of the initiative will be incorporated into upcoming activities under the KFC Harvest Programme, the company's food rescue and redistribution initiative.
Through these distributions, beneficiaries at participating charity homes and community centres will receive face masks alongside freshly prepared KFC meals and frozen chicken contributions.
QSR Brands head of governance Sahada Salihin said the initiative reflected the company's belief that its responsibilities extend beyond its food business.
She added that working with established NGO partners would help ensure assistance reaches communities that need it most.
The face mask donation also complements the company's existing community support efforts, allowing KFC Malaysia to provide essential supplies while continuing to address food insecurity among underserved groups.
KFC Harvest Programme Has Redistributed Over 61,000kg of Food

Introduced in Malaysia in 2019, the KFC Harvest Programme was established to rescue surplus food from participating restaurants and redistribute it to underserved communities and charity homes through NGO partners.
The programme has since expanded to cover 170 KFC restaurants nationwide and has redistributed more than 61,000kg of surplus food, benefiting thousands of individuals and families across Malaysia.
By redirecting surplus food to communities in need, the initiative helps minimise food waste while improving access to food for vulnerable groups.
The latest face mask contribution builds on this established network, demonstrating how existing community partnerships can be used to provide assistance beyond meals and food supplies.
KFC Malaysia Reaffirms Commitment to Community Well-Being
Sahada said the company hoped to continue creating a meaningful and lasting impact through its collaboration with KSK and TLFP.
She highlighted the importance of working alongside community organisations to support people facing everyday challenges, adding that the face mask initiative complemented the work already carried out through the KFC Harvest Programme.
Through its latest contribution, KFC Malaysia is extending its community outreach to address immediate needs while continuing its broader efforts to support food security and reduce waste.
With 20,000 face masks set to reach vulnerable communities through its NGO partners, the initiative highlights the role of corporate-community partnerships in delivering practical assistance to those who need it most.

KFC Malaysia Donates 20,000 Face Masks to Vulnerable Communities Across Klang Valley

Malaysia has recorded its highest-ever score in the Economic Freedom of the World index since it was introduced in 1970, although the country has slipped two places in the global rankings as other economies made faster progress.
According to the Center for Market Education (CME), Malaysia scored 7.57 out of 10 in the Economic Freedom of the World: 2026 Annual Report, improving slightly from 7.55 previously. Despite the record score, Malaysia fell from 33rd to 35th place among 165 countries and jurisdictions assessed.
In a statement issued on Monday, 19 October, the think tank said Malaysia's economic freedom had improved considerably since the beginning of the century. However, it warned that the latest ranking should not be a reason for complacency, particularly as other countries continue to implement reforms at a faster pace.
Malaysia Remains ASEAN's Second-Freest Economy
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/8afca5035a0d0b9972cef6b39abed3b1b25a2242bcf4ad10b2ed6e72a6f3234c" />
Despite its decline in the global rankings, Malaysia remains the second-freest economy in ASEAN, trailing only Singapore, which secured third place worldwide with a score of 8.43.
Malaysia continues to rank ahead of several regional economies, including Thailand in 57th place, Brunei and the Philippines in joint 61st place, and Indonesia in 72nd place.
Globally, Hong Kong topped the index with a score of 8.53, followed by Switzerland, Singapore, New Zealand and the United States.
Malaysia's score is also above the regional average of 6.99, indicating that the country's overall economic freedom remains relatively strong compared with its regional counterparts.
Nevertheless, the two-place drop highlights the difference between improving a country's own performance and keeping pace with other economies. Although Malaysia achieved a higher score, other countries made sufficient progress to overtake it in the rankings.
Malaysia's Economic Freedom Has Recovered Since the Asian Financial Crisis
&nbsp;<img src="https://r2.myc.my/f5efc3d20acd87b90e8ec65ca8a5facac8f825db5aaf4bd93400351a81f384e5" />
The CME noted that Malaysia has made considerable progress since the economic difficulties experienced during the Asian financial crisis.
According to the report, Malaysia scored 6.99 and ranked 36th in 1995 before its score fell to 6.12 in 2002 following the financial crisis, capital controls and policy disruptions.
The country's position deteriorated further, reaching 97th place in 2009. However, Malaysia has gradually improved its standing since then, reflecting its longer-term progress in economic freedom.
The latest score of 7.57 marks its strongest performance since the index was established, suggesting that Malaysia has made significant gains over the decades despite facing economic and policy challenges along the way.
The improvement also reinforces Malaysia's position as one of Southeast Asia's more economically open economies, although the latest ranking suggests there is still room for further reform.
Government Ownership Remains a Key Concern
&nbsp;<img src="https://r2.myc.my/f4d57510cb73caddb9a44fc4b7cd4032798a83df8448a27e7035f76a4597605b" />
CME chief executive officer Dr Carmelo Ferlito said Malaysia's monetary stability and relatively flexible labour market remained important strengths supporting its economic performance.
However, he warned that the government's extensive involvement in commercial activities continued to present a challenge.
According to Ferlito, government-linked companies (GLCs) and state-owned banks account for a substantial state presence in the economy, which he described as among the heaviest in the world.
He also raised concerns about public administration, stating that it had become less impartial since 2019.
While the country's record score is encouraging, Ferlito stressed that Malaysia should not become complacent as other economies continue to advance their economic reforms.
His comments highlight the ongoing debate over the role of government in the economy, particularly the balance between state participation, private-sector competition and market efficiency.
What Malaysia Needs to Do to Reach the Global Top 20
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/d231982ee21843486056da568c1d7911fcbe2fe9c0aefaf186ab4678a4075298" />
Ferlito said Malaysia would need to pursue further structural reforms if it hopes to break into the world's top 20 economies in the economic freedom rankings.
Among the measures he identified were reducing state ownership in the economy, ensuring that the civil service operates according to clear rules and remains impartial, simplifying the country's tariff structure, and opening markets to greater competition.
Reducing barriers to competition could help create more opportunities for private businesses, while clearer and more impartial public administration could support a more predictable business environment.
Simplifying tariffs could also make trade arrangements easier to navigate, potentially improving market access for businesses and investors.
However, the proposed changes would require sustained policy efforts rather than relying solely on incremental improvements in the country's overall score.
Record Score Shows Progress, But More Reforms Are Needed
Malaysia's latest economic freedom score represents a milestone, reflecting its recovery from the setbacks experienced in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis and its subsequent improvement over the years.
Nevertheless, its fall to 35th place globally serves as a reminder that maintaining competitiveness requires continued progress as other countries strengthen their own economic policies.
With Malaysia still ranked second in ASEAN, the country has a relatively strong regional position. The challenge now is to translate that standing into further improvements in economic openness, market competition and public administration.
As highlighted by CME, reaching the global top 20 will require Malaysia to address the role of state-owned entities, strengthen impartial governance and create greater opportunities for competition.
Whether Malaysia can climb higher in future editions of the index will depend not only on maintaining economic stability, but also on how effectively it implements the reforms needed to keep pace with the rest of the world.

Malaysia Achieves Highest Economic Freedom Score Since 1970, But Slips To 35th Globally

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has condemned the cyberbullying and threats directed at Universiti Malaya (UM) student Ummi Umairah Bakhit, stressing that differences of opinion should never justify intimidation or personal attacks.
Fahmi said threats against the 23-year-old student, including comments suggesting that she would be tracked down at her university, were unacceptable. He emphasised that university students have the right to express their views on matters of public interest, particularly when discussing issues such as corruption.
&ldquo;We can have different views, and that is not a problem,&rdquo; Fahmi said, adding that Ummi had not broken any laws or committed a criminal offence by expressing her concerns about corruption.
Speaking to reporters after attending the Smart Parents Interactive Hub programme on 18 October 2026, the minister said the substance of Ummi&rsquo;s remarks should take precedence over disagreements about her tone or delivery. He added that her comments reflected a desire to see Malaysia strengthen its efforts to combat kleptocracy and reject corruption.
Fahmi also urged victims of cyberbullying to lodge reports with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), allowing the authorities to identify those responsible and consider appropriate action under the law.
What Did UM Student Ummi Umairah Say About Najib Razak&rsquo;s RM50 Million Fine?
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

The online backlash against Ummi followed her remarks during a recent open forum involving UMNO leaders, where she questioned the public fundraising campaign intended to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pay a court-imposed fine of RM50 million.
The dialogue featured former minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
During the discussion, Ummi raised concerns about why members of the public were contributing money towards Najib&rsquo;s fine, given the corruption allegations and controversies associated with his time in office. Her comments sparked debate online, with some supporting her willingness to question political figures while others criticised her views.
However, the disagreement escalated beyond criticism of her remarks. Ummi reportedly faced online harassment and threats after videos of her comments circulated on social media. She also claimed that photographs of her had been taken from her social media accounts and shared without her consent.
The incident has since raised broader concerns about online safety, freedom of expression and the treatment of young people who speak out about political or public-interest issues.
Fahmi said that while people were free to disagree with Ummi&rsquo;s position or the way she expressed it, threats and intimidation were unacceptable. He also said MCMC would examine the case proactively rather than simply wait for formal complaints to be submitted.
Fahmi Warns Social Media Users Against Hiding Behind Fake Accounts
&nbsp;<img src="https://r2.myc.my/1cdc58fdb3ccf3b6b0253ca7c01fd4cf84e0cc6445b8506cdf73f73f61d7de2c" />
Separately, Fahmi expressed support for His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who had reminded Malaysians to observe proper etiquette when communicating on social media.
The minister cautioned users against assuming that online posts carried no consequences simply because they were using anonymous profiles or fake accounts.
He said MCMC was investigating several cases involving suspected coordinated inauthentic behaviour (CIB) targeting Sultan Ibrahim and the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.
According to Fahmi, more than 2,000 pieces of AI-generated or highly offensive content, alongside 600 fake accounts, had been identified in connection with material insulting the King.
Preliminary investigations indicated that many of the Facebook accounts involved were believed to have originated overseas, although investigations remained ongoing. Fahmi said the authorities would seek to bring identified individuals to justice where appropriate.
In the separate case involving Tuanku Muhriz, some suspected fake accounts were believed to have been created around a month earlier before being used to circulate insulting remarks about the royal institution. Some reportedly had no followers or only one follower, raising suspicions about their intended purpose.
The cases highlight the challenges authorities face in identifying those responsible for harmful online activity, particularly when accounts are created to conceal users&rsquo; identities or coordinate attacks.
Government Considers Tighter Online Safety Rules For WhatsApp
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/5203a3b3b01b6c3e3c19be77a97189f92e5b9652cdd49abb820e98d4a4d60f6e" />
Fahmi also said the government was examining whether stronger regulatory safeguards were needed to tackle cyberbullying on instant messaging platforms, including WhatsApp.
Possible measures under consideration include electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) procedures and age verification, particularly to improve protection for younger users.
Although WhatsApp sets a minimum age of 16 for account holders, Fahmi said concerns remained over the safety of school students using the platform. Its end-to-end encryption, which protects the contents of communications from access by third parties, also presents challenges when investigating harmful messages.
He noted that communication services such as WhatsApp are not currently covered under the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA) in the manner being discussed. Fahmi said he would ask MCMC to examine the issue and engage with Meta, WhatsApp&rsquo;s parent company, on possible measures.
No specific new requirements were announced, with the government still considering the need for additional safeguards.
Cyberbullying Raises Questions About Online Accountability
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/41e84733c6f2541de7c2a63b307360d4c2a1df2bf16ba714a90ee6957633bc2d" />
The threats against Ummi have renewed discussions about how Malaysians can express disagreement online without resorting to harassment or intimidation.
Fahmi&rsquo;s remarks underscore the distinction between criticising someone&rsquo;s opinions and threatening their personal safety. While public figures and political issues often generate strong reactions, he stressed that expressing a different viewpoint should not expose someone to threats simply for speaking out.
For victims of cyberbullying, his advice remains to report incidents to the police and MCMC so that the authorities can assess the evidence and determine whether further action is warranted.
As Malaysia continues to examine online safety measures, the case also highlights the challenges of protecting freedom of expression while addressing harassment, anonymous abuse and potentially coordinated attacks across social media platforms.

Fahmi Fadzil Condemns Online Threats Against UM Student Ummi Umairah Over Najib Donation Remarks

Harry Styles has paid an emotional tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, performing an unreleased song written in his memory on the second anniversary of his death. The surprise performance took place during Styles&rsquo; sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden in New York on 16 October 2026, offering fans a rare glimpse into how the singer has been processing the loss of his friend.
Titled What Is Enough, the previously unheard track was written by Styles around two years ago and performed publicly for the first time during the concert. Accompanying himself on guitar, the singer delivered the heartfelt ballad before an audience that had gathered for the latest show of his Together, Together global tour.
The tribute struck a chord with One Direction fans, many of whom have continued to remember Payne and the group's shared history since his passing in 2024.

Before performing the song, Styles took a moment to reflect on the people who had supported him throughout his career and helped him reach the stage at Madison Square Garden.
&ldquo;I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,&rdquo; he told the audience.
He then spoke about the friendships that had shaped his life, acknowledging the people whose support had contributed to his success.
&ldquo;There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I&rsquo;ve worked with, that I wouldn&rsquo;t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends,&rdquo; Styles said.
He subsequently asked the audience for permission to perform a song he had written for Payne around the time of his death, introducing it as What Is Enough.
The emotional acoustic performance featured reflective lyrics about grief, remembrance and the difficulty of losing someone close. One particularly poignant line, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not wise enough, but I wrote you a letter just to burn it up and watch it rise&rdquo;, resonated with fans who watched the performance in person or through videos shared online.
Another passage appeared to reference Payne&rsquo;s funeral, with Styles singing about the experience of burying friends and gathering around a fire. The lyrics offered a deeply personal expression of loss, although the singer did not elaborate further on the song&rsquo;s meaning.
Harry Styles Encourages Fans To Look After Each Other

Beyond the song itself, Styles used the moment to share a message about grief and the importance of supporting one another through difficult times.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven&rsquo;t. But really, it&rsquo;s just about looking after each other,&rdquo; he told the crowd.
The message reflected the emotional weight of losing someone who had played an important role in his life, particularly someone with whom he had shared the experience of becoming an international music star.
Styles had previously spoken about Payne&rsquo;s death during a March 2026 interview with Apple Music&rsquo;s Zane Lowe. He described the experience of losing a friend as difficult, particularly when the public also feels connected to the loss.
He also reflected on how Payne&rsquo;s passing had encouraged him to reconsider how he wanted to live his own life, explaining that one way to honour friends who have died is to make the most of the time one has.
The Madison Square Garden performance gave Styles an opportunity to express those feelings through music, while allowing fans to remember Payne alongside him.

Payne died on 16 October 2024, aged 31, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His death shocked fans around the world and prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians, former bandmates and people who had followed his career.
The singer had risen to international fame as a member of One Direction, alongside Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The group was formed during the 2010 series of The X Factor in the UK after the five contestants auditioned as solo performers before being brought together as a band.
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/aa790556eee0a6f91b741a8b0eb88142466532cc8c7798ae932e460338471850" />
One Direction subsequently became one of the biggest pop groups of their generation, releasing five studio albums and building a massive international fanbase before going on hiatus in 2016. The members later pursued individual careers, but their shared history continued to connect them with millions of fans.
Following Payne&rsquo;s death, Styles and his former bandmates released a joint statement expressing their devastation and describing him as a brother they loved dearly. They also paid tribute to the memories they had shared and offered their condolences to his family, friends and fans.
In the years leading up to his death, Payne had spoken publicly about personal struggles, including difficulties associated with fame and his wellbeing. His passing prompted renewed discussions about the pressures faced by young performers who grow up in the public eye, although the circumstances surrounding his death should not be reduced to any single aspect of his life.
For Styles, the anniversary was an opportunity to remember Payne not only as a former bandmate but also as a friend who had been part of a defining chapter in his life.
&lsquo;What Is Enough&rsquo; Adds A Personal Moment To Harry Styles&rsquo; New Tour
The tribute took place during Styles&rsquo; 30-show residency at Madison Square Garden, part of his Together, Together global tour. The New York run is scheduled to conclude on 31 October 2026.

The tour supports his fourth studio album, Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally., released in March 2026. While the residency has featured Styles performing for packed audiences, the debut of What Is Enough gave one of the shows a more intimate and personal atmosphere.
After performing the unreleased track, Styles returned to the concert's regular set, including songs such as Sign of the Times and Aperture during the encore.
The unexpected debut also sparked emotional reactions across social media, with fans sharing clips of the performance and praising the sincerity of the tribute. For many listeners who grew up following One Direction, the song represented a rare opportunity to hear Styles express his grief through a piece of music that had remained private for two years.
Although Styles has not announced an official release for What Is Enough, its first public performance has already given the song a special place among fans remembering Payne.
Two years after his passing, the tribute served as a reminder of the friendships formed during One Direction&rsquo;s rise to fame and the lasting impact Payne continues to have on those who knew him and the millions who grew up listening to the band.

Harry Styles Honours Liam Payne With Unreleased Song Two Years After His Passing

Malaysians currently in France have been urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant as demonstrations across the country continue, with reports of violent clashes, looting and fires in several major cities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also known as Wisma Putra, has advised Malaysians to consider postponing non-essential travel to France until the situation improves.
In a statement issued on Sunday (18 October 2026), the ministry said it was closely monitoring developments and confirmed that no Malaysians had been reported to be involved in or adversely affected by the demonstrations at the time of the announcement.
Although travel to France remains unrestricted, Malaysians planning to visit the country are encouraged to assess the situation before departing and reconsider non-essential trips if conditions remain uncertain. Those already in France should remain alert, avoid protest areas and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The Malaysian Embassy in Paris has issued a safety advisory asking Malaysians in France to exercise caution and remain vigilant, particularly in areas where demonstrations are taking place.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has also advised Malaysians travelling to France and Italy to stay away from student protest sites, highlighting the risk of being caught in unrest or facing arrest by local authorities.
He said demonstrations were generally concentrated along particular routes and at specific locations, rather than affecting entire cities such as Paris and Rome. Travellers are therefore encouraged to check local updates, identify areas where protests are planned and avoid major demonstration routes.
Malaysians have also been advised against joining the demonstrations themselves. Mohamad stressed that citizens travelling abroad should respect local laws and refrain from activities that could put their safety at risk.
Although protests in Italy have largely remained peaceful, clashes were reported in the north-western city of Turin, where demonstrators allegedly threw stones, glass bottles and flares at security personnel. The developments have prompted additional caution for Malaysians travelling to both European countries.
Malaysians Asked To Register With Embassy Through e-Konsular
<iframe style="border: none; overflow: hidden;" src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMOFAMalaysia%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0K5coaNUiXmReuoZvJ5Ly6XGmzih6dMHpSjjmJgqyThjd6QizdsWTjJz2Zk28KzHSl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500" width="500" height="690" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe>
Wisma Putra has urged Malaysians living in France to ensure that the Malaysian Embassy in Paris has their latest contact information. Those who have not registered are encouraged to do so through the ministry&rsquo;s e-Konsular platform.
Malaysians planning to travel to France are also advised to register their travel details in advance. This will help the embassy contact them and facilitate consular assistance if an emergency arises.
Travellers should continue monitoring announcements from the Malaysian Embassy and relevant French authorities, as the situation may change depending on the location and scale of demonstrations.
For immediate consular assistance or emergencies, Malaysians can contact the Embassy of Malaysia in Paris through the following channels:
<ul>
<li>Telephone: +33 1 45 53 11 85</li>
<li>After-hours emergency helpline: +33 6 32 44 65 71</li>
<li>Email: <a href="mailto:par.consular@kln.gov.my">par.consular@kln.gov.my</a></li>
<li>e-Konsular registration: <a href="https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my">https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my</a></li>
</ul>
The ministry said the embassy remains in close contact with local authorities to obtain updated information and provide assistance to Malaysians when necessary. Wisma Putra will continue monitoring developments and issue further updates if required.
What Is Happening In France? Up To 550,000 People Join Demonstrations
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/50fd3f8dc052d634c26ba39f8b05f1882dd923d7ae506f79d4d108838f5ee962" />
The travel advisory comes as France experiences a fresh wave of demonstrations over school conditions, staffing shortages and the rising cost of living.
On Saturday (17 October), an estimated 550,000 people took to the streets in cities and towns across the country. The demonstrations involved students, trade union members and other groups, with some participants demanding improvements to secondary schools, including better facilities and additional teaching staff.
The protests have also drawn support from groups concerned about rising living costs, including fuel prices. Some demonstrators have linked their grievances to broader economic pressures, while others have focused primarily on conditions within the education system.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg also appeared at a rally in Paris alongside high-school students calling for better learning conditions and increased support for education. Her participation brought further international attention to the demonstrations.
However, what began as marches and public gatherings escalated into violence in several locations as the day progressed.
Clashes, Looting And Fires Reported Across Major French Cities

French authorities reported widespread disorder during Saturday&rsquo;s demonstrations, with more than 1,200 people reportedly arrested, according to one account. Other reports gave lower figures earlier in the response, reflecting differences in the timing of the reports.
In Paris, clashes broke out between some groups of demonstrators and riot police, who deployed tear gas and water cannon. Fires were lit in streets, vehicles were set alight and businesses were damaged or looted. Some shops were reportedly ransacked, while a restaurant was gutted by fire.

Violence and property damage were also reported elsewhere in France. In Limoges, a fire at the town hall caused part of the roof to collapse. In Lyon, the city's tourist office was set alight, prompting the mayor to describe the damage as a tragedy involving an important local landmark.
Authorities also reported damage in cities and towns including Grenoble, Avignon, Pau, Montpellier and Valence. In Lille, an Apple Store was reportedly broken into and emptied. Prime Minister S&eacute;bastien Lecornu said around 150 police officers had been injured during the unrest.
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/f72ee527f9b2951be55f65e41100bccbd0b8448da4b0878222b99369872fa166" />
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned attacks on public buildings and businesses, saying those responsible would face prosecution and punishment. He also stressed that violence would not be tolerated.
The demonstrations have continued despite government efforts to address some of the concerns raised by students. Education Minister &Eacute;douard Geffray previously announced plans to provide 3,000 additional supply teachers, but protests have persisted.
The unrest is also unfolding amid political uncertainty in France ahead of the next presidential election, adding another dimension to demonstrations that initially centred on education and living costs.
For Malaysians, the immediate priority remains personal safety. Those in France should avoid demonstration routes and gathering points, keep abreast of local developments, follow official instructions and maintain contact with the Malaysian Embassy if assistance is needed. Travellers who have not yet departed should carefully consider whether their plans are essential before proceeding.

Malaysians Urged To Stay Alert In France As Protests Turn Violent Across Major Cities

Malaysia&rsquo;s top women&rsquo;s doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, have made badminton history after winning the Denmark Open 2026, ending an 18-year wait for the country&rsquo;s women&rsquo;s doubles title at the prestigious tournament.
The world No. 5 Malaysians defeated Japan&rsquo;s world No. 21 pairing of Hinata Suzuki and Nao Yamakita 21-18, 21-11 in the final at the SJF Bank Arena in Odense, Denmark, on Sunday (18 October). The match lasted just 36 minutes, with Pearly-Thinaah delivering a composed performance to secure their second title of the 2026 season.
Their victory makes them only the second Malaysian women&rsquo;s doubles pair to win the Denmark Open, following Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui, who lifted the trophy in 2008.
Pearly-Thinaah Overcome Japanese Opponents To Claim Title

The final did not begin smoothly for Pearly-Thinaah, as Suzuki and Yamakita made an early push to take control of the opening game. The Malaysian pair initially trailed 3-8 before mounting an impressive comeback, stringing together seven consecutive points to move ahead 10-8.
Although the Japanese duo continued to challenge them, Pearly-Thinaah held their nerve during the closing stages to take the first game 21-18.
The Malaysians were more dominant in the second game, combining aggressive attacking shots with solid defensive play to prevent their opponents from building momentum. They eventually secured a convincing 21-11 victory to seal the championship.

<script async="" src="https://platform.x.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Their performance capped an impressive campaign at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 750 tournament, where they had to overcome several difficult opponents on their way to the final.
In the quarter-finals, Pearly-Thinaah fought back from a game down to defeat India&rsquo;s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela 14-21, 21-17, 21-11. They followed that result with a straight-games victory over China&rsquo;s Bao Li Jing and Cao Zi Han, winning 21-16, 21-14 in the semi-finals.
The semi-final victory had already ended Malaysia&rsquo;s 18-year wait to have a women&rsquo;s doubles pair reach the Denmark Open final. Pearly-Thinaah then completed the journey by becoming champions.
A More Satisfying Victory After Indonesia Masters Walkover
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/7354a1147637d76d4976ddea3a890196d49495f21a1a61dd9f9b3efb05df8444" />
The Denmark Open title is Pearly-Thinaah&rsquo;s second World Tour championship of 2026, following their triumph at the Indonesia Masters in January.
However, their previous title came through a walkover after Japanese opponents Arisa Igarashi and Miyu Takahashi withdrew before the final. This time, the Malaysians earned the trophy through a completed final, making the achievement particularly meaningful.
Their latest success also follows a demanding schedule, with the pair having competed at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games shortly before arriving in Denmark. Despite the limited recovery time, they adopted a measured approach and focused on enjoying their matches rather than allowing expectations to affect their performances.
The victory is also an encouraging development after Pearly was sidelined for around two months in June because of a back injury. The pair have faced challenges in regaining their previous form, making their return to the top of the podium an important milestone in their season.
As champions, Pearly-Thinaah earned approximately RM287,000 in prize money, while the runners-up received around RM136,000.
Following In The Footsteps Of Malaysian Badminton Legends

The triumph places Pearly-Thinaah alongside Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui in the history of Malaysian women&rsquo;s doubles at the Denmark Open.
Wong and Chin were the last Malaysian pair to win the title in 2008, defeating Indonesia&rsquo;s Rani Mundiasti and Jo Novita 23-21, 21-12. Eighteen years later, Pearly-Thinaah have brought the championship back to Malaysia.
The result also strengthens their position in the race to qualify for the BWF World Tour Finals in December, which features only the top eight eligible pairs and players in each discipline. Before the Denmark Open, Pearly-Thinaah were reportedly sixth on the qualifying list, with their latest title potentially improving their standing.
Their achievement comes amid a promising period for Malaysian badminton, following another historic result at the 2026 BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt. Malaysian teenagers Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim won the girls&rsquo; doubles title after defeating Japan&rsquo;s Nijika Kamata and Shizuku Kashio 15-7, 9-15, 15-12.
The victory ended Malaysia&rsquo;s 34-year wait for a girls&rsquo; doubles gold medal at the World Junior Championships, which began in 1992.
With Pearly-Thinaah ending the Denmark Open drought and Low-Genevie securing a landmark junior title, Malaysian badminton has enjoyed a memorable weekend on the international stage. For Pearly and Thinaah, the challenge now is to build on their latest success as they continue their campaign towards the end of the 2026 season.

Pearly Tan-Thinaah End Malaysia’s 18-Year Wait With Historic Denmark Open 2026 Triumph

A Universiti Malaya (UM) student has sparked widespread discussion online after openly questioning why members of the public are donating money to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pay a RM50 million fine. Her remarks, made during a dialogue with political leaders in Kuala Lumpur, have reignited conversations about corruption, political accountability and the importance of speaking up against wrongdoing.
Ummi Umairah Bakhit, a student representative from UM, raised the issue during the third edition of the iFUTURE summit, held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from 11 to 13 October. The session featured former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

<script async="" src="https://platform.x.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

During the question-and-answer session, Ummi highlighted several controversies involving alleged corruption and political accountability, including the Tabung Haji controversy and reports that a politician&rsquo;s son had allegedly received RM4 million without working.
She then questioned the public&rsquo;s willingness to contribute money to Najib, describing the fundraising effort as the &ldquo;stupidest thing&rdquo; she had ever witnessed, given the former prime minister&rsquo;s legal history and links to the wider 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
Ummi also asked the panellists how young Malaysians could be encouraged to speak out against corruption and political feudalism, think critically and support their arguments with facts and statistical evidence.
Her comments subsequently circulated on social media, with many users praising her willingness to raise sensitive questions directly with senior political figures. The discussion also highlighted the challenges of encouraging accountability when allegations of wrongdoing involve influential political leaders.
Why Are Malaysians Donating Money To Najib?
<img src="https://r2.myc.my/d97fb118ce5a7275cac4bd67d03ebee282592f6dfe87cd2516f11952ee5f249a" />
The controversy centres on the Najib Razak Solidarity Fund, which was established on 18 September following the announcement of a conditional pardon for the former prime minister.
Najib was convicted in the SRC International case, which involved RM42 million transferred into his personal bank accounts. The case is separate from the wider 1MDB scandal, which involved the alleged misappropriation of billions of dollars from Malaysia&rsquo;s state investment fund.
Under the pardon decision, Najib&rsquo;s prison sentence was reduced, and he was granted a conditional arrangement to serve the remainder of his sentence under house detention until 23 August 2028. He is also subject to a RM50 million fine, with the conditions of his pardon forming the basis of the fundraising campaign.
On 27 September, UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party had collected RM9.25 million for the solidarity fund.
The fundraising effort has drawn criticism from those who question whether public contributions should be used to help a former leader meet financial penalties arising from a criminal conviction. Others may view the donations as an expression of political support or solidarity with Najib.
It is this contrast that prompted Ummi to question what message such fundraising sends to younger Malaysians about integrity and accountability.
Khairy Says Wrongdoing Should Never Be Defended

Responding to Ummi&rsquo;s question, Khairy acknowledged her concerns and stressed that corruption and mismanagement should not be defended simply because they involve political allies or leaders.
&ldquo;We shouldn't be afraid about talking about corruption, even if it involves our leaders. What is wrong is wrong. What you cannot defend, don't defend,&rdquo; he said.
He also emphasised that those facing allegations or cases should answer for them, adding that integrity should never be compromised regardless of political affiliation.
Amirudin welcomed the younger generation&rsquo;s continued attention to corruption, describing it as a longstanding national concern and an encouraging sign for Malaysia&rsquo;s future leadership.
Onn Hafiz similarly condemned corruption, describing it as a &ldquo;cancer&rdquo; that could undermine progress. He said wrongdoing should not be tolerated, whether it involved political leaders, individuals or businesses.
Unverified Claims Of Pressure On Student Spark Further Debate
Following the viral exchange, social media users also raised concerns over claims that certain parties were pressuring UM to take action against Ummi because of her remarks.
The allegations prompted further online support for the student, with some users defending her right to question political leaders and express her views on matters of public interest.
However, the claims have not been independently verified. No confirmed evidence has established who was allegedly involved, and there has been no confirmation that UM has initiated disciplinary proceedings against her.
The exchange took place during iFUTURE 2026, organised by the Higher Education Ministry through the Department of Higher Education. The summit brought together 1,231 student leaders from 20 Malaysian public universities and 30 international universities to discuss value-based leadership.
Ummi&rsquo;s remarks have since become part of a wider debate over whether political loyalty should ever take precedence over integrity, and whether young Malaysians can challenge those in power without fear of repercussions.
