Do we have any shellfish lovers here? 
It seems like we have some bad news&hellip;
To think that interstate is finally allowed, and you finally thought of planning a food adventure with friends. But for the shellfish lovers, you gotta hold on for a bit. Before you get your shellfish, you&rsquo;ll need to ensure that it&rsquo;s not a species from Sungai Geting, Tumpat, Kelantan.

The Kelantan Fisheries Department (JPNK) had imposed an immediate ban on molluscs from Sungai Getting due to a suspected &ldquo;red tide&rdquo; which is a common term used to indicate an uncontrolled algae bloom which is harmful for humans.
The sales and havest of shellfish, such as oysters, cockles and clams are prohibited as of October untul further notice said JPNK director Nazri Ishak.
"An analysis by the Fisheries Biosecurity Lab shows that molluscs from the area are contaminated with&nbsp;saxitoxin&nbsp;from harmful algae,&nbsp;Alexandrium minutum," he said.
"If consumed, the contaminated molluscs can cause poisoning and pose a threat to human health," he said in a statement on Monday, 11 October.

How did the red tide happen?

The phenomenon is actually a common occurrence due to hot weather and other factors. The molluscs are also a filter as they tend to filter algae at high levels. If the levels are too high, it can cause consumers food poisoning. Weekly tests are done to ensure the safety to consume it.

Before anyone buys or wants to consume shellfish, it&rsquo;s best to enquire with the seller of where the location of the food is taken.

On a good note, not all molluscs originate from the East Coast area and specifically from the contaminated area. But it&rsquo;s better safe than sorry, so do check on it!
It&rsquo;s good that a notice was put out as soon as possible about the toxin levels. Hopefully the conditions will return back to normal soon and everyone can consume shellfish without having the need to worry.
