Singapore Airlines Ltd has overturned a rule forcing pregnant cabin crew to leave their job and airline.&nbsp;
On Monday, Singapore Air told Strait Times that cabin crew who are pregnant &ldquo;may choose to work in a temporary ground attachment&rdquo; while being given flying duties after their maternity leave.&nbsp;
The work on the ground offered to pregnant cabin crew can last for three months to nine months, said the airline.&nbsp;

<h2>Old Rule</h2>
Stewardesses revealed that they were asked to take leave without pay after disclosing their pregnancy status. Moreover, they were pressed to cease working for the airline once they submitted their child&rsquo;s birth certificates.&nbsp;
Ground works weren&rsquo;t available for pregnant crew, which means that if they were keen to fly again, they would have to reapply for the job without the guarantee of their re-employment.&nbsp;
This rule received almost 10 years of backlash. In 2020, gender equality groups criticised the rules as being discriminatory and unfair.&nbsp;
The implementation of the new rule is driven by the labour shortage after airlines have slowly returned to their flying business that was forced to be halted due to the pandemic.&nbsp;

Japan Airlines Co provides work on the ground for the pregnant crew after their maternity leave. Afterwards, they can resume their flying duties.&nbsp;
Korean Air and Asiana Airlines provide two years leave for pregnant stewardesses.
Work on the ground can be an option for those pregnant flight attendants working for Qantas Airways Ltd in Australia. they are also allowed to negotiate their part-time roles after their return.&nbsp;
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd in Hong Kong said "once cabin crew declare their pregnancy, they may choose to take up paid ground duties or go on unpaid leave until the start of their statutory maternity leave&rdquo;.&nbsp; 
Their flying duties can be continued after they pass the safety training courses. The rules have been established for over a decade.
<h2>Malaysia Airlines' Flying Policy For Pregnant Flight Crew</h2>
In 2005, Malaysia Airline <a href="https://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/35716">sacked a pregnant woman</a> named Beatrice Fernandez, inducing the public's outrage and discussion upon the topic of discrimination.
She sued the airline for discrimination but failed to win eventually.
Such an act remains lawful until today.&nbsp;

<h2>What Can We Hope From The Change?</h2>
Despite the change, there are still gray areas in Singapore Airlines' policy in regard to pregnancy.&nbsp;
&nbsp;"Are there other rules, explicit or implicit, that will bar post-partum mothers from flying for SIA, such as requirement on physique? Losing baby weight takes time, usually six to 12 months,&rdquo; Association of Women for Action and Research Executive Director Corinna Lim said.
When asked, Singapore Airlines said that they uphold &ldquo;the same grooming standards for all cabin crew&rdquo;, reported by Straits Times.
It didn&rsquo;t reply to Bloomberg&rsquo;s question of whether pregnant cabin crew would be offered a permanent post even after the amendment to the rule.
Nevertheless, it is still good news! Hopefully, this can signify a better working environment for women (and other folks) in airlines!&nbsp;

A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. Beyond that, riders must stay constantly alert &mdash; navigating traffic, avoiding accidents, and meeting tight delivery timelines.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s either scorching hot or you get drenched,&rdquo; he explains. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s exhausting, and you&rsquo;re risking your life on the road every single day.&rdquo;
His typical day may not involve office meetings or air-conditioned cubicles, but it demands more stamina and situational awareness than many white-collar jobs.
Despite the hardships, Afiq says mental discipline is the key. &ldquo;You are your own boss, but people forget that being a boss is hard. There&rsquo;s no one chasing you to work &mdash; so you have to be consistent and motivated.&rdquo;

He keeps detailed records, sets weekly targets (like hitting 180 orders), and takes advantage of platform incentives. On one particular week in May, he earned S$1,283 before incentives, and an additional S$150 bonus for reaching his delivery goal.
But it&rsquo;s not all sunshine and windfalls. &ldquo;If I take a week off, my income drops to around S$4,000,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;But if I work every day &mdash; seven days a week for the whole month &mdash; I can get close to S$7,000.&rdquo;

&ldquo;I feel less stressed, less cramped, and more at peace,&rdquo; he shared. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the best of both worlds &mdash; I earn in Singapore, but I live in comfort in Malaysia.&rdquo;
No Career Ladder, But a Path to Freedom
While Afiq is proud of his achievements, he is realistic about the nature of platform work. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no promotion, no HR department planning your career,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not for everyone. You have to make it work for you.&rdquo;

In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Health has moved forward with legislative reforms designed to bolster Malaysia&rsquo;s specialist workforce and ensure fairer access to advanced medical care.
Effective from 1 July, the Medical (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and the Medical Act (Amendment) 2024 have come into force. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad described the changes as a major step towards creating a more transparent, inclusive, and competency-based system for medical specialists.
Key features of the amendments include:

The reforms aim not only to fill existing gaps in specialist availability but also to provide long-term stability for Malaysia&rsquo;s healthcare system&mdash;by improving training pipelines, retaining local talent, and ensuring more equitable distribution of expertise across the country.
