In Malaysia, we all know that living in a diverse and multi-cultural country, we can expect to have many celebrations and holidays with one another.
Fun fact, did you know that we are one of the few countries in the world with the most Public Holidays? In 2023, it&rsquo;s said that Malaysia will have a total of 15 Federal Public Holidays. As for the total number of public holidays we have in the country, in 2022, we had a total of 69 days of holiday and this is due to different states having their own holidays as well.

As we are nearing the Lunar New year, we can see that many malls and even some streets are already decorated in traditional Chinese decorations. The one thing many look forward to is the to see the popular lion dance performances whether it is at a mall or perhaps at an open house!

The Lion Dance has been done for generations and it&rsquo;s never failed to bring a smile to the faces of the audience. The Lion Dance also symbolizes a sign of good luck and helps drive away evil spirits. Some also believe that when the lion bites the head of a person, it will bring them good luck too!
For those performing the dance, it certainly takes quite some skill as it shows a combination of acrobatic movement and choreography. Many of these dancers train for years to perfect the act and recently a local duo had just won the hearts of Malaysians not just for their performance but for displaying unity and harmony through their performance.

TikTok user Ah Peng (@ahpeng2830) posted a video showing a Lion Dance performance at an event. What made the video gain up to 2.3 million views and 117.3K Likes at the time of writing this was that the performance was performed by a Malay Muslim girl in a hijab. The performance by the duo was certainly mesmerising to many and many on TikTok had also commented how they enjoyed the diversity of the performance.

So, Who Are The Performers?
A day after the video was posted, Ah Peng posted another <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ahpeng2830/video/7189494633913732379">follow-up video</a> with articles about the Malay girls behind the Lion Dance. One thing to note is that the TikToker could not verify the specific girls, however, their lion costume did match the video and it&rsquo;s said that the performance is by 6 Malay siblings who joined a Chinese Cultural and Sports Association in Penang.
Presuming it is by the group, the lion dance is led by 16-year-old Siti Aishah Mohd Farulnizam accompanied by her siblings Mohd Faiz, 15; Mohamad Fahmi, 12; Siti Alya, 8, and Siti Aleesa, 6.
Lately, multicultural Lion Dance performances have been getting common. Another video was posted on Facebook showing a performance at Puchong which saw Chinese, Malays and Indians all together to perform the Lion Dance.

A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. The ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was carrying 65 people on board&mdash;53 passengers and 12 crew members&mdash;along with 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.
The ferry capsized at approximately 11:20pm, and by 12:22am, it was found overturned and drifting. Initial reports point to a combination of engine trouble and rough weather conditions, with waves reaching up to two metres (6.5 feet), contributing to the tragic incident.
Death Toll Rises as Search Efforts Intensify

As of Thursday evening, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) confirmed that four people have died, 31 have been rescued, and about 30 remain missing. Many of the rescued passengers were found unconscious after drifting for hours in choppy waters overnight. Authorities have deployed nine rescue vessels, two tugboats, two inflatable boats, and a helicopter, alongside a team of underwater divers and local fishermen, to aid in the rescue operation.
According to Nanang Sigit, head of the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office, search efforts are focused along the waters between the accident site and Gilimanuk Port, where several early survivors were found. He added that the improved weather on Thursday has allowed for a more concentrated water-based search.

He and three others used life jackets to remain afloat through the night. Others were less fortunate&mdash;some passengers were found unconscious, having clung to wreckage or floated alone until help arrived.
Families of the missing gathered at both Ketapang and Gilimanuk ports, anxiously awaiting updates. Some broke down in tears; others called out the names of loved ones still unaccounted for.
Engine Trouble and Weather Cited

While the manifest listed 65 people, Indonesian authorities acknowledge that actual numbers often differ, a persistent issue in the country&rsquo;s maritime transport system.

Photographs from the scene published by Antara News Agency showed ambulances on standby, bodies being recovered, and locals waiting by the roadside for word of family members.

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, the Sarawak government is taking proactive steps to prepare the next generation for a digital future. In a forward-looking initiative, teachers across the state are receiving specialised AI training, enabling them to introduce this transformative technology into their classrooms &mdash; not just as a tool, but as a teaching philosophy grounded in ethics, innovation, and impact.
This initiative is driven by a desire to ensure that education in Sarawak does not lag behind global technological trends, while also responding directly to the needs and aspirations of teachers on the ground.
The Moral Compass of Technology

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the training programme in response to a heartfelt request from teachers, conveyed by Deputy Minister Datuk Abdullah Saidol. During the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025, the Premier stressed that while AI can be a powerful enabler, its use must be tempered with moral responsibility and critical thinking.
&ldquo;We have to tell our students that AI is just a machine,&rdquo; Abang Johari said. &ldquo;A machine without feeling, without emotion. But we are human &mdash; and it is we who must decide how the technology is used.&rdquo;
Using the analogy of a kitchen knife, he explained that while tools can serve many beneficial purposes, they can also cause harm if misused. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why education is key. AI must be used to improve lives, not to damage them. Our role is to guide that process.&rdquo;
He further highlighted AI&rsquo;s growing role in Sarawak&rsquo;s economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and the social sector, making it imperative that educators are equipped to keep up with changing demands across all industries.
Hands-On Innovation: A Glimpse into the Training Programme

This &ldquo;Train-the-Trainer&rdquo; programme offered a dual-track approach:

<li>One teacher shared that using games like &ldquo;Werewolf&rdquo; helped illustrate logic flow and decision-making in a way that was accessible and engaging for young learners. &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t just about the coding &mdash; it was about storytelling, ethics, and problem-solving,&rdquo; they said.</li>

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers joined the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), which delved deeper into AI integration through PictoBlox, a visual programming platform, and AI-integrated Arduino hardware. Teachers were mentored by IEEE student volunteers, who helped them explore how AI could be used to solve community challenges.
One standout project was a visual aid device for the visually impaired, developed by a team of teachers with no prior coding experience. Using image recognition and motion sensors, they prototyped a tool that could guide visually impaired students through school corridors &mdash; a powerful reminder of how innovation can arise when empathy and technology intersect.
Empowering Educators, Empowering Students

We spark a ripple effect &mdash; one that can influence an entire generation to see innovation not as something abstract, but as a tool for solving real problems.&rdquo;
Chumbaka, known for its storytelling-based approach to digital education, sees this model as one that could be scaled across Malaysia. The organisation emphasises inclusivity &mdash; ensuring that schools even in smaller towns like Miri are not left behind as AI and digital literacy become global imperatives.
Looking Ahead: From Pilot to Policy
The Sarawak government now appears committed to expanding this initiative statewide, with strong indications that similar programmes will reach rural and interior schools in the near future. Premier Abang Johari has reiterated his belief that AI should be woven into every sector &mdash; and that education is where this transformation must begin.
Deputy Minister Abdullah also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries, universities, and civil society in building a tech-literate population. &ldquo;The interest is already there among our teachers. Our job is to nurture it, support it, and scale it.&rdquo;

Effective from 1 July, the Medical (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and the Medical Act (Amendment) 2024 have come into force. Key features of the amendments include:

The reforms aim not only to fill existing gaps in specialist availability but also to provide long-term stability for Malaysia&rsquo;s healthcare system&mdash;by improving training pipelines, retaining local talent, and ensuring more equitable distribution of expertise across the country.
