Do you recall the times when you completed your secondary education, and you eagerly anticipated a break before commencing college or university? Those were the days, but regrettably, it wasn't the case for everyone. Some students were required to participate in the National Service Training Programme (PLKN).
This program was initially introduced in Malaysia in 2004 but was later abolished and substituted with a youth leadership program during the Pakatan Harapan administration in 2018 due to its substantial operational expenses.
PLKN To Come Back With New Training Programme

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has revealed that the training program will be reintroduced, lasting for 45 days, during which trainees will undergo training at 13 military camps and 1 police camp nationwide.
"We are considering bringing back PLKN, but with a fresh approach rather than the old format, which resembled more of a summer camp," he stated in the Dewan Rakyat. He believes that this new approach to PLKN can reduce costs from RM500 million per year to not more than RM100 million per year.
PLKN 3.0 To Have 2 Phases

When outlining the new program structure, Phase 1 will be conducted at the school level and will involve Form Four students. It will primarily concentrate on enhancing the existing uniform units as part of co-curricular activities in schools.
In the 2nd phase, there will be a 45-day training program scheduled to take place after the students have completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations. This extended camp will primarily focus on military-style identity-building. The new program is also planning to incorporate reference training programs similar to those held in Korea and Singapore.
The government's objective for PLKN 3.0 is to yield positive outcomes. Following the completion of the 45-day training, the trainees will be prepared to enter the workforce and potentially join government agencies such as the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), and the police force, among others.
Paperwork Still Needs Approval From The National Security Council (MKN)

"We believe that PLKN serves the purpose of instilling patriotism in our youth, but we also aim to create a more cost-effective framework," expressed the Defence Minister.
He went on to elaborate that the revised approach has the potential to cut costs by utilizing existing military bases and deploying military personnel as instructors at these facilities.
As of now, specific details regarding PLKN 3.0 have not been released, and it remains uncertain whether the program will be mandatory for all students or only randomly selected groups, as was done in the past. However, in the long term, this revival can contribute to instilling patriotism and nurturing disciplined and high-quality youths for Malaysia's future.
At least the program is now 45 days in duration, compared to the previous three-month program. Moreover, it's worth noting that the national service program is not mandatory, unlike in countries like Singapore or South Korea, where even K-pop stars can't evade it (except for individuals like League of Legends Esports pro, Faker, who won a gold medal for the country and is now exempted from it).

Malaysia is considering a dedicated law to hold companies and individuals responsible for transboundary haze pollution accountable, as worsening air quality and recurring forest fires increase pressure on the government to secure action from Indonesia.
Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia could introduce legislation similar to Singapore&rsquo;s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act 2014. This would require information such as fire coordinates, land ownership records, the companies or individuals operating on affected land, and evidence linking their activities to cross-border pollution. Gathering such information would involve extensive investigations before prosecution could proceed.
Syed Ibrahim said a dedicated law could deter open burning that threatens public health and the environment across national borders.
&ldquo;Diplomacy must produce measurable action, while enforcement action must be based on evidence and the law,&rdquo; he told Parliament.

Malaysia Offers Firefighting Assistance

During the parliamentary discussion, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid questioned how quickly assistance could be deployed while fires continued, noting that haze can cross borders regardless of whether the fires have been declared a national disaster.
Singapore&rsquo;s Law Offers a Possible Model

A 16-year-old student was arrested after allegedly attacking a teacher with an axe at Tunku Putra-HELP International School in Kuching, Sarawak, on 21 October, leaving the teacher injured and prompting a police investigation.
The incident occurred at around 8am when the teacher reportedly attempted to confiscate the weapon from the student. Police later confirmed that the weapon involved was an axe or hatchet, contradicting earlier reports circulating online that described it as a penknife.
The case has raised renewed concerns about school safety in Malaysia, particularly following several recent incidents involving serious violence at educational institutions.

School staff managed to restrain the student and escort him to the principal&rsquo;s office, where he remained under supervision until the authorities took over the case. The student&rsquo;s parents were also informed.
The school confirmed that students in the affected classroom managed to evacuate safely and that no other injuries were reported.

Malaysia has banned civil servants from using the popular navigation app Waze for official duties, citing concerns over data security, location tracking and national sovereignty. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also encouraged Malaysians to consider switching to TuJu, a locally developed navigation application managed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).
The decision followed the third meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) for 2026, chaired by Anwar on 20 October. The government&rsquo;s move has sparked renewed debate about digital privacy, the security of location data and whether local alternatives are ready to replace established navigation platforms such as Waze and Google Maps.
Civil Servants Ordered to Stop Using Waze Immediately

According to a circular dated 20 October issued by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, civil servants have been instructed to stop using Waze with immediate effect.
Ministry secretaries-general, heads of federal departments, statutory bodies, state government secretaries and local authorities have been directed to communicate and enforce the decision among their respective personnel.
The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), under the National Security Council in the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Department, has been designated as the coordinating agency for questions and requests for clarification regarding the directive.
However, the restriction applies to civil servants, and the government has not announced a nationwide ban on Waze for members of the public. Anwar has instead encouraged Malaysians to consider TuJu as an alternative.
Why Is Malaysia Raising Concerns About Waze?

Like other navigation services, Waze can collect information such as location data, routes, destinations, searches and device details, depending on how the app is used and configured. When collected over time, location information can potentially reveal travel routines, frequently visited places and movement patterns.
Such information could raise security concerns, particularly when it involves government personnel or sensitive locations. Nevertheless, NACSA has reportedly acknowledged that there is no evidence Waze has analysed users&rsquo; movement patterns for the purposes raised in the discussion.
The government&rsquo;s position centres on reducing potential exposure and strengthening Malaysia&rsquo;s control over sensitive information, rather than establishing that Waze has misused its users&rsquo; data.
In a statement on social media, Anwar stressed that the security of Malaysians&rsquo; personal information and identities could not be compromised as the country continues to expand its digital services.
What Is TuJu, Malaysia&rsquo;s Local Navigation App?

These issues could be particularly problematic around Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, where closely spaced highway exits and interchanges require clear, timely directions.

The government&rsquo;s promotion of a locally developed alternative does not, by itself, establish that the app collects less data or offers stronger privacy protections than its competitors.
For TuJu to gain wider acceptance, improvements to navigation accuracy, reliability, compatibility and transparency around data handling will be important. Motorists are unlikely to abandon familiar services unless the alternative can meet their everyday needs.
Government Strengthens Wider Cybersecurity Measures

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) and The Lost Food Project (TLFP), aims to provide additional protection to homeless individuals, underserved families and residents of charity homes and People's Housing Programme (PPR) communities.
According to QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd, the contribution will be distributed in two phases through its non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners, which collectively reach nearly 8,000 beneficiaries across the Klang Valley.
The initiative reinforces KFC Malaysia's commitment to supporting communities facing daily challenges while building on its existing efforts to improve food security and reduce waste.
KFC Malaysia Extends Support Beyond Food Assistance

The 20,000 face masks were officially handed over to representatives from KSK and TLFP during a ceremony at Menara QSR in Petaling Jaya on 15 October 2026.
The first phase of the initiative involved distributing face masks through the organisations' outreach networks to individuals who need assistance. On 17 October, KFC Malaysia representatives joined volunteers from both NGOs to distribute face masks and KFC meal packs to members of the homeless community at Pusat Khidmat Gelandangan Medan Tuanku in Kuala Lumpur.
Through their respective community programmes, KSK and TLFP support thousands of individuals and families, including residents of charity homes and PPR communities. Their wider outreach networks also enable assistance to reach communities beyond the Klang Valley.
The face mask contribution comes amid concerns over haze and air quality affecting parts of Malaysia, providing additional support to vulnerable groups who may have limited access to essential protective supplies.
KFC Harvest Programme to Continue Distributing Aid

QSR Brands head of governance Sahada Salihin said the initiative reflected the company's belief that its responsibilities extend beyond its food business.

The face mask donation also complements the company's existing community support efforts, allowing KFC Malaysia to provide essential supplies while continuing to address food insecurity among underserved groups.
