Many of us have found ourselves in this situation, especially when attempting to log in to our social media accounts on a new device, as we often rely on automatic logins.
Typically, when we forget our password, we rush to compile a list of past passwords to try various combinations. If you've been involved in the cryptocurrency community for an extended period, you might be familiar with the tale of Stefan Thomas, a German programmer residing in San Francisco. He is the individual behind an animated video explaining 'What Is Bitcoin?' back in 2011.
The video was created for a Bitcoin enthusiast in Switzerland, and as compensation, Thomas received 7,002 Bitcoins. At the time, each Bitcoin was worth a mere $2, but its value has since surged to approximately $34,095.80 per coin. This has led to the current staggering value of his collection, which amounts to $238,735,990.80.
If you think of it, that doesn&rsquo;t sound half bad considering that the video was only a minute long. 
Unfortunately, Thomas is facing a challenging situation as he cannot remember the password required to unlock the encrypted IronKey hard drive that securely holds his Bitcoin. To make matters worse, this hard drive isn't like typical storage devices that can be connected to another computer for data recovery.

For those unfamiliar with an encrypted IronKey, it's a highly secure device that typically allows users only 10 attempts to correctly input the password. The downside is that if someone exceeds those 10 attempts with incorrect passwords, the device will automatically wipe all its data, rendering it inaccessible to anyone, including the rightful owner.
Comparatively, back in 2011, the price of a single Bitcoin ranged from $2 to $30 (~RM142.45). However, over time, the value of Bitcoin has significantly increased. In 2021, it reached over $65,000 (~RM9.50 - RM308,652.50) per Bitcoin. As of 2023, the price has fluctuated, and it stands at approximately $34,626 (~RM164,421.56).
Observing the substantial increase in the digital currency's value over the years, Thomas made several unsuccessful attempts to access the hard drive. With only two more password guesses left out of the 10 allotted, he stands to lose a substantial fortune if he doesn't succeed.
Getting Help From Many

At present, Thomas isn't the sole individual striving to access the hard drive. Groups of cybersecurity professionals are also endeavouring to unlock the wallet, exploring various methods to breach the IronKey's security.
Remarkably, one hacker purports to have discovered a resolution to Thomas' predicament. An entity known as Uncipheard, which specializes in recovering lost cryptocurrency, asserts that they have devised a method to circumvent the security of the decade-old IronKey hard drives. However, the situation takes an unusual turn from here.

The hacker, who went by the alias Tom Smith, reached out to Thomas with a message stating "query voltage recurrence." This message served as evidence of an impressive accomplishment. Tom Smith had formulated these terms and set them as a passphrase on specific models of encrypted IronKeys distributed nationwide. This approach essentially provided them with unlimited attempts to unlock the USB stick. With the assistance of a high-performance computer, they managed to generate the passphrase within a day, requiring approximately 200 trillion attempts. To add further credence, the hacker revealed that he and Unciphered's team had dedicated nearly two months to developing a method to crack the specific decade-old IronKey model.
The hacker firmly believed that they could unlock Thomas's IronKey and were prepared to employ their secret cracking technique for this purpose. They had waited until they possessed a fully reliable attack method before contacting Thomas. However, Thomas appeared hesitant to accept their help, and their conversation did not progress to discussing any fees or commissions. This was because he had already entered into a "handshake deal" with two other cracking teams a year earlier. Thomas further confirmed to WIRED that he was no longer in a position to engage with new individuals, and the current team might decide to subcontract Unciphered if they deemed it the best course of action.
With just two remaining password guesses, Thomas finds himself in a challenging situation. He has two choices before him: to place his trust in the companies that claim they can help him or simply hold onto the IronKey and hope that he recalls the password at some point in the future. If any of us were in a similar position, many would likely consider giving the companies a chance. However, this decision would also depend on the time available for research and the number of remaining attempts to guess the password on the IronKey.

Two Harvard students have developed a chilling demo that showcases how smart glasses, combined with facial recognition technology, can instantly expose people&rsquo;s identities, phone numbers, and addresses. What makes it even more disturbing is that it relies on existing, widely available tech like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and public databases.
The Birth of I-XRAY&nbsp; 
AnhPhu Nguyen, one of the students behind the project, posted a video demonstrating how the tech works, which was later picked up by 404 Media. Dubbed I-XRAY, the system uses the Meta smart glasses to livestream video to Instagram. A computer program then monitors the stream, using AI to identify faces. These images are cross-checked with public databases to extract names, addresses, phone numbers, and even relatives, with the information sent back through a phone app.

One key component is PimEyes, an &ldquo;alarmingly accurate&rdquo; face search engine described by The New York Times in 2022. Privacy concerns around this tech have been rising ever since Clearview AI started using facial recognition to assist law enforcement. But what sets Nguyen and Ardayfio&rsquo;s project apart is how seamlessly it pairs with consumer gadgets&mdash;smart glasses that are discreet and widely accessible.
Nguyen and Ardayfio stress that the purpose of their project is to raise awareness. They make it clear that I-XRAY was not built for misuse and will not be released. Instead, their goal is to emphasize that this isn&rsquo;t some futuristic dystopia&mdash;it&rsquo;s happening now. The critical factor enabling this tech? Large language models (LLMs) that can autonomously connect names and faces from enormous data sources.
The Privacy Dilemma of Modern Smart Glasses&nbsp;

This demonstration is a stark reminder of how smart glasses can be misused. However, there are steps you can take to protect your privacy. Nguyen and Ardayfio point out that some reverse face search engines and people-search databases allow users to opt-out. Even so, completely deleting your digital presence is nearly impossible&mdash;you can only limit the availability of your information.

However, in Malaysia, some individuals misuse this by submitting fake medical certificates, which can lead to serious consequences. For example, a saleswoman was fined RM700 for using a fraudulent MC at a shopping centre in Jalan Cheras.

Recently, TikTok user Asraff Jeffery (@asraffjeffery) posted a video detailing his experience working in Fukuoka, Japan. In the video, Asraff explained how one day he began experiencing severe pain in his salivary glands, similar to mumps, which made him uncomfortable and unable to attend work. His employer insisted he seek medical treatment at a hospital, so he consulted a specialist and received medication.
However, when Asraff asked for a medical certificate (MC) to excuse him from work, the doctor appeared confused and disregarded his request. Hoping for better luck, he visited a pharmacy, but the staff there had the same reaction. "I showed them the prescription the doctor gave me and asked the pharmacist about the MC. He had no idea what I was talking about," Asraff explained.
Japan Doesn&rsquo;t Practice The MC Culture

The following day, when Asraff returned to work, he asked his boss about the proper procedure since he had missed the previous day due to illness. His employer simply told him that all he needed was to take a day off&mdash;no documentation was required since he was genuinely sick.
&ldquo;There is no MC culture in Japan. I remember when I was working near Shah Alam and had a stomach ache, I went to a clinic in the area," he recalled.
He also expressed shock at the experience he had at the clinic, where the doctor didn&rsquo;t even examine him and immediately asked how many days of MC he needed. "The 'selling of MC' culture in Malaysia is really &lsquo;kaw-kaw&rsquo;," Asraff remarked, still surprised at the doctor's question.
In closing, Asraff took the opportunity to remind others, especially those working in Malaysia, not to falsify or purchase medical certificates, as doing so could diminish one's blessings.
Netizens Also Share Their Experience Of Having Their Sick Leaves Unapproved 
Scrolling through the comments section, many netizens echoed similar sentiments, noting that people in Japan tend to be highly disciplined, with little to no instances of employees attempting to forge sick leave. One user shared a personal experience where their HR department denied their sick leave after they caught a cold during the Covid-19 pandemic. Just two days later, the entire office was infected, forcing the company to shut down for a week.
In contrast, some Malaysians were criticized for not being entirely honest when applying for sick leave. Many lamented that this lack of "honesty" was one of the key cultural differences between Malaysia and Japan. Several comments pointed out the stark contrast in attitudes, with some even asking which clinic was selling fake MC slips, highlighting the issue of forgery in Malaysia.

For many Malaysians pursuing higher education, you may be familiar with or have even borrowed from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) to finance your studies.
Given the challenging economic conditions in recent years, it&rsquo;s been difficult for many Malaysians to make ends meet. However, those who have taken out PTPTN loans are still obligated to repay them. Unfortunately, a significant number of borrowers have failed to honour their repayments, causing the amount of unpaid debt to increase year after year.
430,000 M&rsquo;sians Have Not Repaid Their PTPTN Loans

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir revealed that 430,000 borrowers have defaulted on their PTPTN loans, resulting in a staggering RM6 billion in unpaid debt. He expressed concern over the financial strain this has placed on PTPTN, attributing the issue to the irresponsible behaviour of some borrowers, many of whom have neglected to begin repayments years after graduating from university.
&ldquo;This is a category that hasn&rsquo;t cared from the first day they left (university), they haven&rsquo;t informed us of their situation, where they work, or how they intend to (make repayments),&rdquo; said Zambry.
PTPTN To Take Legal Action Against Defaulters

In response to the growing number of unpaid PTPTN loans, Zambry revealed that an in-depth discussion has begun at the cabinet level, which includes the possibility of taking legal action against the 430,000 defaulters. While the timeline and specific measures are still under consideration, PTPTN chairperson Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim will announce the details once finalized.
However, Zambry reassured that any decisions will take borrowers' circumstances into account. "We understand the (economic) situation, but I urge them to come forward (to PTPTN) and explain their circumstances. They must also have a moral responsibility because once they repay, the money will be used to help the next generation."
On a positive note, Zambry also announced that 26,534 students will receive a Loan Advance of RM1,500 each to support their entry into public higher education institutions for undergraduate studies starting next month.
What Happens If You Don&rsquo;t Repay Your PTPTN Loan?

Failure to keep up with your PTPTN repayments could affect more than just your finances&mdash;it could ground your travel plans. PTPTN loan defaulters are prohibited from leaving the country, thanks to a collaboration with the Immigration Department of Malaysia. If you have overdue payments, PTPTN will notify the Immigration Department, and you&rsquo;ll be blacklisted in their system.
The consequences are serious: you won&rsquo;t be able to travel abroad, renew your passport, or even apply for a new one.
PTPTN borrowers are advised to check for any overdue amount in their repayments and settle it or discuss it with PTPTN at least 7 days before their trip to avoid being detained at the airport for overdue payments.
According to PTPTN Chief Operating Officer, Mastura Mohd Khalid, some borrowers only realise that they are barred from travelling only when they are stopped at the airport&rsquo;s immigration counter and when asked to make a repayment, many are able to settle it on the spot.
If you have PTPTN loans, now is the time to start repaying or settling them to avoid being blacklisted from traveling abroad. On the bright side, PTPTN occasionally runs campaigns to assist borrowers with repayment, so be sure to keep an eye on their social media channels for any updates or opportunities.

However, the downside is that the reliability of news sources can sometimes be questionable, and the credibility of those sharing or reposting the information should be carefully considered before spreading it.

Global X Hack Hijacks Accounts To Promote &lsquo;Meme Coin&rsquo;
Recently, the X accounts of several government agencies and news outlets, both local and international, were compromised in a hacking incident aimed at promoting a cryptocurrency token. The hackers appeared to have targeted several high-profile X accounts globally in an operation that took place around 2 AM on September 19.
Among the affected local accounts were the Employees Provident Fund (KWSP), the Election Commission (SPR), and Malaysia Gazette.
At the time of writing, all Malaysian accounts have been restored to normal.

According to Decrypt, hackers attempted to promote a dubious meme coin called $HACKED in what&rsquo;s been labeled the "most incompetent hack of the year." As expected, the SOL token failed to gain much traction. $HACKED operates on the Solana blockchain, which supports SOL, the world&rsquo;s fifth-largest digital currency. Unlike major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, meme coins typically attract investors through lighthearted imagery rather than solid fundamentals.
Since the hack appeared to target only X (formerly Twitter) accounts, some speculate the hackers were focused on the platform rather than individual users or nations, likely as part of a crypto pump-and-dump scheme.
This event highlights the importance of using two-factor authentication (2FA) to secure online accounts.
Many criticized the operation, calling it an amateurish scam, and it remains unclear how much the hackers made. BleepingComputer reported that, when the hack was first detected, $HACKED had just 42 holders and a market cap of around $5,000. By the time the story was published, the number of holders had grown to 436, with the market cap rising to $166,175.57 (~RM 703,753.54)
Crypto investigator ZachXBT estimated that, despite the scale of the attack, the hackers likely only profited around $8,000 (~RM33,880).

Twitter Users Share Little Concern But Agree That The Hack Was Definitely Worthless 
While scrolling through the comments, many netizens shared their thoughts on the hack. Some Malaysians expressed concern about the frequency of cyberattacks targeting the country, especially with numerous reports of data breaches. Others speculated that the hack of Malaysian accounts might have occurred because the administrators lacked strong passwords or hadn&rsquo;t enabled two-factor authentication (2FA).
On the other hand, ZachXBT suggested that the hack could have happened because the accounts were linked to the same site or app, which had been granted permission to post. He also pointed out that scammers are constantly looking for ways to con users online, but in this case, the hack likely cost the hacker more than they earned&mdash;earning them the title of the &ldquo;most incompetent hacker of the year.&rdquo;

Just a few days ago, Lee Thiam Wah, founder of 99 Speedmart, saw his fortune grow by an additional RM2 billion after successfully listing 99 Speedmart Retail Holdings Bhd at RM1.65 per share, solidifying his position as one of Malaysia&rsquo;s billionaires.
However, the success of the chain has sparked online discussions, with one netizen highlighting concerns over employees being underpaid despite working long hours. Reactions were mixed, with some defending the company, claiming that employee wages reflect the nature of their work, though offering limited career growth. Others, however, pointed out that the pay doesn't justify the long hours, with allegations that staff are not compensated for overtime or provided additional benefits.

In a statement reported by NST, 99 Speedmart's Chief Operating Officer, Yong Eng Kwang, acknowledged that the minimarket sector operates under unique challenges and conditions.
He emphasized that the company fully complies with the Employment (Amendment) Act 2022, noting that as Malaysia&rsquo;s largest minimarket chain, 99 Speedmart ensures its wages meet legal standards. Yong also pointed out that wage comparisons with other industries should account for these differences.
Assuring compliance, he stated that 99 Speedmart adheres to the national minimum wage of RM1,500 per month, with the company actually paying above this amount. His remarks were in response to the viral controversy surrounding wage fairness and employee satisfaction, which gained attention after the founder&rsquo;s rise to billionaire status. The controversy included claims that a branch manager's average salary is RM2,387 per month.

Yong clarified that, beyond the basic salary, 99 Speedmart provides employees with a comprehensive benefits package. This includes annual salary increases, year-end bonuses, access to panel clinics with reimbursable medical visits, career development and training opportunities, a free SIM card with 40GB of data and unlimited calls, as well as complimentary food vouchers.
Regarding working hours, he explained that stores operate from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and dismissed claims about the absence of overtime pay, affirming that staff are compensated according to agreements made between the employees and the company.

Yong explained that all employees are entitled to annual leave based on their years of service, as well as maternity, paternity, and Haj leaves, in accordance with legal guidelines. Additionally, they receive the standard EPF and SOCSO benefits. New mothers are granted the statutory 98 days of maternity leave, while fathers receive between 1 and 7 days of paternity leave, depending on their length of employment.
Addressing the online post about wages, Yong clarified that the quoted figures were from 2020 and do not reflect the current pay structure. He emphasized that long-serving branch managers now earn over RM4,000 per month, demonstrating the company&rsquo;s commitment to fair compensation for its employees' dedication and hard work.
&ldquo;We also understand the financial pressures many people are under these days, which is why we work tirelessly to keep our prices low, ensuring that essential goods remain affordable for everyone,&rdquo; Yong concluded.
