Have you checked out the latest Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Account 3?
In case you missed it, EPF has recently revamped its system and introduced a new Account 3 (Fleksibel) for members below 55 years old. This new account offers members the flexibility to withdraw funds whenever they need it. Account 3, which was launched on May 11th, will start from a balance of RM0. EPF members also have the option for a one-time transfer to shift funds from Account 2 (Sejahtera) to Account 3 (Fleksibel).

However, despite the promise of flexible withdrawals, reports have surfaced claiming that members can only withdraw up to RM250 per day. But is this claim accurate?
How To Withdraw Funds From Account 3?

EPF members may withdraw funds from Account 3 if there's sufficient balance. Account 3 starts with an initial balance of RM0, accumulating savings from subsequent contributions. Under the new restructuring, monthly EPF contributions are allocated as follows: 75% to Account 1 (Retirement), 15% to Account 2 (Well-being), and 10% to Account 3 (Flexi).
The minimum withdrawal amount is RM50, and applications can be made online via i-Akaun on the app, available on major app stores. For withdrawals exceeding RM250, an eKYC process is required, accessible online. If unable to complete eKYC online, verification can be done at EPF offices or Self-Service Terminals (SST) using thumbprints.
To do so, EPF has released a simple guide that users can follow:
Step 1: Login to your KWSP i-Akaun. Step 2: Tap withdrawal and select withdraw your savings. Step 3: Select Akaun Fleksible and select withdraw now. Step 4: Enter the desired amount that you want to withdraw then select continue. Step 5: Select &amp; update your banking details and select continue. Do note that the bank needs to be registered under your name. Step 6: Read through the Members Declaration and select Accept to continue. Step 7: Enter the TAC number and you&rsquo;ll be directed to a confirmation page indicating your application success.
Withdrawals from Account 3 don't necessitate any additional documentation, yet an operational bank account is necessary to facilitate the payment process. While physical presence for identity verification at offices isn't mandatory due to the availability of online options, this is contingent upon your withdrawal records and the sum requested, provided it's within RM30,000. In cases where there's no prior withdrawal history or if the bank account details differ, identity verification can be completed through two alternative methods:

<li>Thumbprint verification via Self-Service Terminal (SST) at any EPC office, for withdrawal application amount of more than RM10,000, OR</li>
<li>Online verification, subject to withdrawal application amount of less than RM10,000.</li>

If you've requested the one-time transfer of funds from Account 2 (Sejahtera) to Account 3 (Fleksibel), EPF has indicated that it will take 3-5 business days.
For those with enough funds in Account 3 who have applied for flexible withdrawal, the payment will be transferred to your designated bank account within 7 business days upon approval of the application.
Transferring Funds Into Account 3 Using The i-Akaun App
Aside from withdrawing funds from Account 3, there's also the option of executing a one-time transfer from Account 2 to the recently established account. To initiate this transfer, simply click on "Learn More" under the banner titled "Akaun Fleksibel: Meet today&rsquo;s goals, shape tomorrow&rsquo;s dreams".

Once you've accessed the introduction to the new structure, proceed by clicking "Next" and then the "Transfer Now" button. Following this, you'll encounter an important reminder that must be acknowledged before proceeding with the transaction.
Within the designated one-time transfer window, you have the flexibility to transfer funds from Account 2 to either Account 1 or Account 3. Additionally, you'll receive a detailed comparison of your Account 1, 2, and 3 balances before and after the transaction. Please be aware that EPF regulations prohibit users from transferring funds from Account 1 to any other accounts.

Furthermore, it's important to note that users do not have the option to select the amount of money they wish to transfer to Account 3, as it is predetermined by the system. Following this, you'll be prompted to finalize the Member's Declaration and click "Accept" after reviewing the terms. Finally, please allow for a processing time of approximately 3 to 5 working days before the transfer is completed.
While it's now possible to withdraw funds from Account 3, it's not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Given the current economic conditions, with the cost of living nearing an all-time high, many Malaysians are diligently saving and seeking additional sources of income whenever possible.
In our opinion and coming from MYC! CEO, Jason Ko, who is an ex-investment banker, he says that withdrawing funds from EPF Account 3 should be based on careful considerations of affordability and should only occur in life and death situations. He advocates for keeping wealth where it generates the highest interest, as deferred expenses can accumulate significantly over time. He emphasizes the principle with a quote: "if you never see it, you never have it," suggesting that out-of-sight funds help in wealth accumulation.

EPF withdrawals, however, are often spent on non-essential items such as gifts for family or holidays based on a few studies. Referencing the chart above on Malaysians' financial self-sufficiency, it's clear that a significant portion of financial challenges arise from inadequate financial assets. The chart reveals that 65% of EPF members have savings of less than RM50,000, and that 50% of former EPF members exhaust their savings within five years, highlighting the urgency for better financial planning and restraint in fund usage.

It&rsquo;s no secret that many Malaysians frequently voice concerns about the political landscape. Regardless of which party is in power, the outcomes often feel the same, and citizens continue to express frustrations, hoping for meaningful action from our ministers.
For those who may not know, these parliament sessions are crucial as they provide a platform for lawmakers to debate and pass legislation, address pressing national issues, and hold the government accountable. Parliament consists of two chambers: the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) and the Dewan Negara (Senate), where the nation&rsquo;s key decisions are shaped and discussed.
Amendments To Communications Act Passes But With the Absence Of 122 MPs

Recently, slightly more than half of the Members of Parliament (MPs) were absent during a critical Dewan Rakyat session. This occurred when the Communications and Multimedia (Amendments) Bill 2024 was passed through a bloc vote initiated by the opposition in an effort to challenge the proposed amendments.
Shockingly, 122 out of 222 MPs failed to show up when the votes were cast, raising serious concerns about parliamentary attendance and accountability.

According to reports, Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, in reading out the votes said 59 lawmakers voted in favour of the bill, 40 MPs voted against it, and one abstained from voting on the matter.
The bill was tabled for a third reading after the vote, and it was approved by a voice vote.
Just to note, the quorum of the House and of a Committee of the whole House must consist of the following:

<li>The Senate shall consist of 10 Senators, excluding the chair.</li>
<li>The House of Representatives shall consist of 26 members excluding the chair.</li>
<li>The Special Chamber shall consist of three members including the chair.</li>
</ol>
For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a quorum is the number of members of an assembly that must be present at any of its meetings to make the proceedings of that meeting valid.
Given the notable absence of several MPs, many netizens questioned how the vote was passed and whether true democracy exists in the country. Some even argued that the MPs' absence was an affront, particularly to those who had elected them, as attending Dewan Rakyat sessions should be the very least expected of them.

Changes Made To The Communications and Multimedia Act

The proposed amendments to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act 1998 (Act 589) are designed to enhance MCMC's governance and operational effectiveness, making it more resilient and capable of regulating the communications and multimedia industry, according to a Bernama report.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that the revisions aim to make the industry more focused, capable, and efficient by strengthening MCMC's regulatory role. He also highlighted that the changes are in line with both local and global advancements and expectations for the industry.
One key change to the Act is the separation of the CEO and Commission Chairman roles, which are currently held by the same person. Fahmi explained that this separation would improve governance and operational efficiency, following the model of other statutory bodies, where different individuals hold these roles.
Article 19&rsquo;s Criticism of the Amendments

Article 19, an advocacy group for freedom of expression, has strongly condemned the recent amendments to the Act. In a joint statement with other civil society organizations, Article 19 criticized the Bill for expanding MCMC's authority to control online content, compel service providers to disclose user data, and suspend Content Application Service Providers (CASPs) for non-compliance.
The statement further argued that the amendments increase punitive measures for offenses and fail to repeal key provisions that undermine freedom of expression. It also criticized the Madani government's delay in implementing human rights reforms, which the group believes encourages censorship, diminishes accountability, and stifles dissent.
Article 19 emphasized that the amendments grant MCMC sweeping powers, including the ability to regulate online content, conduct searches and seizures without a warrant, and compel social media platforms to share user data without judicial oversight. The Act also grants MCMC immunity from court proceedings, which the group sees as problematic. These changes, while aiming to streamline investigations, fail to uphold basic principles of liberty and the international legal framework for internet censorship.
The group warned that the amendments could stifle free speech, erode public trust, and enable mass surveillance. The absence of independent judicial oversight in data access requests was another significant concern, further compounding these violations. They pointed out that the Bill passed without sufficient safeguards.
Article 19&rsquo;s Call for Action:
Article 19 urges the Malaysian government to protect human rights and align its legislation with international standards, particularly those outlined in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which sets the standards for freedom of expression.
Although Malaysia is not a party to the ICCPR, the group stresses that the provisions of Article 19 should still guide the country's international obligations, as they are based on the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR).
In their joint statement, Article 19 called for the following actions:

<li>Halt the Bill's progress in the Senate and refer it to the Parliament Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Elections, and Institutional Reform for further review.</li>
<li>Repeal Sections 211 and 233 of the Act.</li>
<li>Review all provisions in the CMA that do not comply with freedom of expression standards outlined in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.</li>
<li>Commit to transparent and inclusive policymaking that respects the rights of all Malaysians, fostering trust and accountability.</li>

To be fair, this wasn&rsquo;t the lowest attendance in Parliament; back in 2019, fewer than 26 out of 222 MPs attended a Dewan Rakyat session, which was eventually suspended due to a lack of quorum. At present, there is no official list of those who attended or voted during the session. However, we hope that in the future, our leaders will take greater responsibility, as their decisions have a direct impact on our lives.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, he stressed that this principle is already grounded in Malaysian law under the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). Specifically, Section 413 allows for the reimbursement of victims when bank oversight or failure to follow regulations is identified.
Anwar revealed that RM178,407 has already been refunded to scam victims under this provision, demonstrating the law&rsquo;s application in real cases. "If bank negligence is identified, the bank will pay. This is a standard we must uphold to protect consumers and instil greater accountability in the financial system," he said. The prime minister emphasized that this standard must not be limited to Malaysian laws but should also reflect global practices, such as those in the United Kingdom (UK).
Adopting Global Standards For Consumer Protection

To achieve this, the government has tasked a committee chaired by the Treasury&rsquo;s Chief Secretary to explore tighter regulations. The reforms aim to close loopholes that could allow fraud to occur due to weak oversight or insufficient safeguards within financial institutions.
The UK also allows banks to delay suspicious transactions for up to three days to conduct investigations, a practice Malaysia is considering adopting. Such a mechanism could give financial institutions a better chance to identify and halt fraudulent activities before they cause significant harm.
Rising Tide of Online Financial Crimes

To date, over 32 million searches have been conducted on the portal, with approximately two-thirds yielding positive results in preventing fraud.
"This shows that the system is helping to save people from falling victim to scams. Many cases have been intercepted, thanks to tools like Semak Mule," Anwar said. However, he acknowledged that more needs to be done to address the complexity of these crimes, particularly in cases where victims unknowingly become accomplices by allowing their accounts to be misused.
Strengthening Laws and Regional Collaboration

One of the standout features of the Principal PRS is its accessibility, with a low entry point of RM100. Contributions also qualify for income tax relief of up to RM3,000 annually until 2030, making it a practical and tax-efficient solution for Malaysians looking to boost their retirement savings.
To encourage participation, TNG eWallet is offering an additional reward of up to 8% per annum for 30 days on investments of RM100 or more made before December 31, 2024. This incentive underscores TNG Digital&rsquo;s commitment to fostering a savings culture among its users while enhancing their long-term financial resilience.
Users can easily access this feature through the GOfinance Hub within the TNG eWallet app. By selecting either the Principal RetireEasy or Principal Islamic RetireEasy funds, they can start saving immediately. Policyholders like Hamidi and Safie Wahab have expressed their frustrations, highlighting the financial strain caused by these annual increases. Hamidi, whose premiums are set to rise from RM188.47 to RM237.34 next February, lamented the yearly burden. "It feels like an annual event," he said, questioning the justification for the continuous hikes. Safie, on the other hand, reported a significant jump from RM244 to RM377 per month, leaving him contemplating whether to discontinue his policy altogether.
Such price hikes are not isolated incidents; they reflect a broader trend that may soon make private health insurance unaffordable for the middle class, forcing many to rely on overcrowded public healthcare facilities.

The issue extends beyond affordability. Subang and Shah Alam Consumers Association president Datuk Seri Dr Jacob George highlighted the opaque practices of insurance companies, urging them to disclose annual losses to justify premium hikes. &ldquo;How much do they actually spend compared to what they receive from policyholders?&rdquo; he questioned, adding that the government should intervene to limit increases. 
Industry Defends Premium Hikes Amid Calls for Transparency

However, Dr Singh acknowledged the potential for a short- to medium-term decline in policyholders, warning of increased demand on public healthcare services as a consequence.
Meanwhile, Dr Jacob George reiterated that any substantial increase must have a limit, aligning with the MADANI government's approach to ensure affordability for all. He also criticized the cumbersome claims process for policyholders, adding to the financial and emotional strain they already face.

In a video uploaded by Zestie on Instagram, a woman from Kedah revealed that she spent over RM1,000 to celebrate her achievement. Her breakdown included RM200 for her outfit, RM200 for makeup, RM250 for a photographer, and RM170 for accommodation.
Meanwhile, a male graduate mentioned spending around RM700 on his attire, while another opted for a more frugal approach, spending just RM175, stating he didn&rsquo;t see the need to splurge.
On average, graduates reported spending anywhere from RM200 to RM1,500 on clothing, makeup, and photography. Interestingly, one woman revealed she didn&rsquo;t spend anything at all, as her expenses were fully sponsored by her partner.

Scrolling through the comments section of the video, many netizens gave rather divided opinions on the cost spent on graduation. Some criticised the high expenses of some graduates and even compared them to the more modest spending habits of their own graduation days.
Others had also praised those who managed to celebrate their graduation by spending less than RM200, commending their efforts to avoid unnecessary spending (especially with this economy).
