A few days ago, the murder case of Zayn Rayyan resurfaced on social media after the family's lawyer, Mahmud Jumaat, announced that he would no longer represent the couple. He cited unavoidable reasons for his decision and expressed hope for a smooth legal process.
On May 31, the couple, both aged 28, were detained by police at their family home in Puncak Alam. They were remanded for a week to facilitate further investigations under the stringent provisions of Section 302 of the Penal Code, which deals with murder charges.

Additionally, Zayn Rayyan's grandparents were detained on the afternoon of June 12, as confirmed by Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan. Their detention aims to assist in the investigation of the murder.
Case Taking Quite A Turn

The investigation into Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin's murder took a dramatic turn on June 12 when police brought his mother to the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court to record a guilty plea. However, the parents' lawyers objected, arguing that the police's actions were improper and could jeopardise their case.
According to lawyers Fahmi Abd Moin and Mahmud Jumaat, the proceedings were unusual. "It is illegal," Fahmi stated, claiming the police used the wrong law. Mahmud explained that the police brought the mother, Ismanira Abdul Manaf, to the court to record a "confession" under Section 26(1) of the Evidence Act 1950.
The lawyers clarified that Ismanira did not plead guilty but merely provided a statement about the events. Section 26(1) of the Evidence Act states that no confession made by anyone under police custody is admissible as evidence unless made in front of a sessions court judge or magistrate. Fahmi argued, "The police should make the application under Section 115 of the Criminal Procedure Code, but that provision has been abolished. Therefore, Section 26(1) of the Evidence Act is not relevant to record any guilty plea before a magistrate. There are no specific grounds to make this application."
Fahmi continued, "We say it is prejudicial to the mother and the father, who was not produced in court today. This application can also affect any defence later if they are charged." The lawyers also claimed they were not informed beforehand and only learned from the media that Ismanira was being brought to court. "We arrived here at 11 am only to learn later that the proceedings could have taken place as early as 9:30 am," Fahmi said.&nbsp;
He added that they questioned the investigating officer about why they were not informed earlier. "We have not been able to meet our clients, and they were deprived of their rights to lawyers. However, we understand this is an investigation process, and this case is sensitive, so we leave it to the police to conduct their duties. But thanks to the media, at least our clients have representation today," he added.

Both Ismanira and her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, are currently serving their 13-day remand, which will expire on June 13. "There will be no more extension to the remand order and 13 June is the day of the decision. I believe the investigation paper is with the Attorney-General's Chambers, and we will know who will be released or who will be charged," Fahmi stated.
This case is unfolding chaotically, raising the crucial question: what evidence exists to accuse the parents of murdering their own child? The answer remains to be seen.
