Let&rsquo;s face it, streaming services have revolutionized the way we consume content. With high-quality shows and movies available anytime, anywhere, as long as you&rsquo;ve got a data connection, it's no wonder they've become so popular. The convenience and variety they offer are unmatched.
But if you're someone who enjoys the experience of going to the cinema, there's some unfortunate news. Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) has announced the closure of its Citta Mall outlet in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, with operations officially ending on 30 October 2025.

The decision to shut down the Citta Mall outlet comes as part of GSC's efforts to enhance operational efficiency. GSC CEO Koh Mei Lee explained that the closure will allow the company to focus on cinemas located in areas with higher foot traffic and population density.
For moviegoers in the area, the nearest GSC cinema is at Paradigm Mall, less than five kilometres away. As a market leader, GSC is committed to delivering future-focused entertainment experiences, and Koh assures customers that they can still enjoy the same high-quality cinematic experience at Paradigm Mall, inviting everyone to continue their movie-going journey there.

Growing Competition In The Industry
Before the decision to close its Citta Mall outlet, GSC had already shut down several other locations, including its cinemas in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Klang Parade Mall, 3 Damansara (formerly Tropicana City), and Berjaya Times Square. These closures were part of GSC's strategy to make way for newer and more modern cinema outlets opening across the city.

Alongside its regular cinemas, GSC has expanded its offerings with premium, luxury cinema experiences like Aurum Theatre and Velvet Cinemas by GSC. They&rsquo;ve also opened new outlets at locations such as The Exchange TRX, Sunway 163 Mall, and GSC KL East Mall, providing moviegoers with a more elevated and exclusive viewing experience.
Netizens Disappointed But Expected The Closure 
Scrolling through the comments on Facebook, many expressed sadness over the cinema's closure, noting that it was originally operated by MBO before GSC took over. For some, the outlet was considered a "hidden gem," offering great showtimes that were hard to find elsewhere.
On the other hand, some netizens said they weren&rsquo;t surprised by the closure, citing the oversaturation of cinemas in the area and the growing popularity of streaming services, which has made watching movies at home more appealing. Others pointed out that Citta Mall&rsquo;s relatively quiet location gave the cinema an eerie vibe, with some even admitting they were hesitant to visit because it felt "haunted."

With the crowd now likely shifting to Paradigm Mall, we hope GSC upgrades its facilities to accommodate the potential increase in visitors. While it&rsquo;s bittersweet to say goodbye, sometimes change is necessary for the better. Let&rsquo;s just hope this doesn&rsquo;t signal the closure of even more cinemas in the near future.
