Starting January 1, 2025, students enrolled in Malaysian public universities and other government-supported institutions will receive a significant boost in financial aid for domestic travel. The government has increased the FLYsiswa flight subsidy from RM300 to RM400 per student, aiming to make air travel more affordable for those travelling between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Flysiswa 2024 Carnival at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam. Speaking to students, Anwar emphasized the importance of the initiative in lightening the financial burdens associated with returning home for semester breaks or during festive seasons.

&ldquo;This increase reflects the government&rsquo;s commitment to easing the burden of students, especially those travelling to their home states in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan. We want to ensure that every student has the opportunity to focus on their education without being overwhelmed by travel costs,&rdquo; said Anwar.
The Prime Minister&rsquo;s announcement aligns with the government&rsquo;s broader commitment to supporting students from all corners of Malaysia, reinforcing a promise to create an inclusive education system.
Also in attendance were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, and UiTM Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Shahrin Sahib, who lauded the initiative as a vital step forward in addressing the rising costs of domestic air travel.
What Is FLYSiswa?

Launched in 2023, the FLYsiswa program provides subsidies to students travelling on domestic flights between their home states and their study locations. This program primarily targets students whose permanent addresses are in Sabah, Sarawak, or Labuan and who are pursuing their studies in Peninsular Malaysia, as well as those from the peninsula studying in East Malaysia. It also applies to inter-state travel within East Malaysia.
The initiative covers students from various government-recognized institutions, including public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, teacher training institutes (IPG), and matriculation colleges. The subsidy is expected to benefit more than 74,500 students across the country in 2025, with the government allocating RM24 million to support the initiative. Since its inception, over 73% of eligible students have taken advantage of the program, with 37,551 benefiting in 2023 and 36,949 redeeming their vouchers this year.

Eligibility: The subsidy is available to Malaysian citizens studying at eligible institutions:

Once approved, they will receive a digital voucher credited to their account, which can be used to book economy-class flights on participating airlines. If the ticket cost is less than RM400, the remaining amount will remain as a credit for future bookings.

The family has no idea when &ldquo;Ah Long&rdquo; began contacting Yi Xuan or the nature of their relationship. The lack of transparency has only deepened fears that the teenager may have been manipulated or lured away.
Phones Switched Off and a Home Left Empty
After Yi Xuan&rsquo;s disappearance on 28 April, the family attempted to contact both her and &ldquo;Ah Long&rdquo; by phone. Neither responded, and both devices have remained switched off since. In desperation, Su went to &ldquo;Ah Long&rsquo;s&rdquo; known residence, only to find that the premises appeared abandoned.
&ldquo;My family and I have searched everywhere she usually goes &mdash; parks, caf&eacute;s, and hangouts she likes. We even received a tip that someone saw a girl matching her description in Yong Peng, and we rushed there, but so far we&rsquo;ve found nothing,&rdquo; said Su.
A Family Desperate for Answers
Yi Xuan&rsquo;s sudden silence, her connection to a mysterious older man, and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have left her family deeply worried and emotionally drained. Her mother expressed frustration over the lack of leads and the fear that something sinister may have happened.
