If a driver completes the journey faster than the calculated time based on the speed limit, they will face penalties.
Explaining the new approach, Loke remarked, &ldquo;We want drivers to maintain a safe speed over the entire stretch of road, not just in front of the camera. The new system ensures a more consistent adherence to speed limits.&rdquo;
Targeting High-Risk Zones

The initial deployment of the upgraded AwAS cameras will focus on some of Malaysia&rsquo;s most dangerous road stretches. Both areas are notorious for speeding-related accidents, especially involving heavy vehicles navigating steep descents.
&ldquo;These are high-risk zones where drivers tend to speed, especially on downhill stretches,&rdquo; Loke explained. &ldquo;By implementing this system, we aim to reduce accidents and fatalities in these hazardous areas.&rdquo;
A Broader Road Safety Strategy

The new system is part of a larger strategy to improve road safety and reduce Malaysia's alarming accident statistics. In 2024 alone, over 532,000 road accidents were reported, with more than 5,300 resulting in fatalities. Malaysia currently has the highest road fatality rate per 100,000 people in Asia, a statistic the government is determined to change.
To complement the upgraded AwAS system, the Ministry of Transport is also introducing a high-speed weigh-in-motion (HS-WIM) camera system. Set to be operational by September 2025, this system will monitor overweight lorries, a frequent cause of fatal collisions. Ten cameras will be installed in areas with heavy traffic and a high incidence of accidents.

Moreover, the Transport Ministry plans to review and amend laws to impose heftier fines for speeding offences. This, combined with the new surveillance technology, is expected to deter reckless driving and encourage safer behaviour on the roads.

By ensuring consistent speed adherence, the government hopes to significantly reduce road accidents and fatalities. Loke emphasised, &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just enforcement&mdash;it&rsquo;s about fostering a culture of road safety in Malaysia.&rdquo;
The era of quickly tapping the brakes at known speed camera spots is coming to an end. With the introduction of the point-to-point monitoring system, drivers will need to stay consistently mindful of speed limits throughout their journeys, paving the way for safer roads across Malaysia.&nbsp;

Sure, lepak sessions at the mamak or wandering through vibrant street food scenes are a big part of our social life &mdash; and undeniably fun &mdash; but we also have to remember the health risks that come with eating heavy meals during the late hours.
The latest National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2024: Nutrition has sounded the alarm over Malaysians&rsquo; eating patterns, highlighting a concerning trend: the rising frequency of late-night heavy meals. Health authorities are now urging the public to rethink their habits before this trend spirals into a bigger national health crisis.
Late-Night Suppers Becoming a Serious Health Issue

According to the findings, a significant proportion of the population &mdash; 41.8 per cent of adolescents and 33.5 per cent of adults &mdash; admitted to consuming heavy meals late at night at least once a week.
Speaking at the launch of the NHMS 2024: Nutrition report, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad advised Malaysians to practise moderation. &ldquo;Before going to bed, reduce the intake of heavy meals. It&rsquo;s not that you can&rsquo;t eat, but always in moderation,&rdquo; he said, emphasising that while occasional indulgence is understandable, consistent late-night eating could have detrimental effects on health.
The NHMS findings point to direct links between heavy late-night meals and several health complications, including disrupted sleep patterns, digestive issues, and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Regular indulgence may also contribute to weight gain, obesity, and a higher risk of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and hypertension.
A Broader Look at Malaysia&rsquo;s Dietary Challenges

The survey findings do not stop at late-night eating. Malaysians' overall dietary habits are also under scrutiny, particularly with regard to sugar and salt consumption &mdash; two factors heavily associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that have been on the rise nationally.
The report reveals that 63.1 per cent of teenagers and 47.0 per cent of adults are consuming sugar in excess of recommended levels. Alarmingly, nearly half of this intake comes from sugary beverages, which remain a popular choice across all age groups despite ongoing health campaigns.
Similarly, salt intake is substantially higher than advised. About 75.9 per cent of adults were found to consume more than 5 grams of salt daily &mdash; equivalent to one teaspoon &mdash; with actual average consumption closer to 7.3 grams. Although there has been a slight improvement compared to previous years, Dr Dzulkefly warned that the figures remain concerning.
&ldquo;These habits, though they may seem minor or occasional, carry major health consequences. They are fuelling the rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension in the country &mdash; all stemming from our daily food choices,&rdquo; he said
Alarm Over Micronutrient Deficiencies

Beyond sugar and salt, the NHMS 2024 also exposes worrying gaps in micronutrient intake among Malaysians. A significant portion of the population is found to have insufficient iodine levels, with 45.7 per cent falling below the World Health Organisation&rsquo;s recommended standards.
Deficiencies in essential vitamins such as A and C are also widespread. Poor consumption of fruits and vegetables is largely to blame, with the survey showing that only 12.8 per cent of adolescents and 17.1 per cent of adults meet WHO&rsquo;s recommended daily fruit intake. Even fewer &mdash; just 5.2 per cent of adolescents and 12.2 per cent of adults &mdash; consume sufficient vegetables.
Dr Dzulkefly stressed that these figures paint a bleak picture of the nation&rsquo;s nutritional health. &ldquo;We are not eating enough fresh produce. This lack of basic nutrients has significant repercussions, weakening immune systems and heightening vulnerability to illnesses.&rdquo;
Ministry of Health Steps Up With Campaigns and Partnerships

In response to these troubling trends, the Ministry of Health has launched a range of initiatives to encourage healthier eating habits nationwide.

Measures such as reducing the sugar content in instant beverage sachets from 5g to 3g, and the introduction of a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax, form part of this aggressive push.
Efforts are also being ramped up under the War on Salt Campaign, with a strong focus on public education, clearer nutritional labelling on food products, and greater collaboration with food operators to promote healthier recipes. Dr Dzulkefly said the Ministry is working closely with chefs and local businesses to popularise meals that are lower in sugar and salt without compromising on taste.
Symbolic changes are also being considered, including discontinuing the serving of heavy meals during official late-night events to set a positive example at the government level.
&ldquo;These are not just policies on paper. They are active, strategic moves to shift our national food culture in a healthier direction,&rdquo; Dr Dzulkefly asserted.
A National Call to Action: Start Small, Act Early
Above all, the Health Minister called on Malaysians to take the findings seriously and to view the NHMS 2024 report not merely as a set of statistics, but as an urgent wake-up call.
He encouraged the public to take advantage of free health and nutrition screenings available at Ministry of Health Wellness Hubs and other public health facilities. Early detection of dietary-related risks, he said, is critical in preventing more serious health complications down the line.

A Boy Who Felt Out of Place

A place so focused on grades, comparisons and competition can be alienating, especially when you&rsquo;re struggling with comprehension or memory.&rdquo;
A Place to Belong: The Poetry and Song Club

Keen to draw the boy back into school life, Muslim tried a different approach &mdash; one based not on academic pressure, but on empathy. He discovered that the boy had a love for music, so he encouraged him to join the school&rsquo;s poetry and song club.
They never won any contests. That, however, was never the goal.
&ldquo;He came back to school, I believe, because he felt accepted. Valued. That might have been the only fond memory he had of school,&rdquo; Muslim said.
In the classroom, the boy continued to struggle. He consistently failed exams, but he approached his assignments in the Landscape and Nursery vocational subject with determination. His work was rarely perfect, yet he applied himself with care and effort. Muslim never scolded him, knowing that for this student, just trying was already a victory.
A Long-Awaited Victory, Too Late to See

In fact, he scored an A- &mdash; in none other than Landscape and Nursery.
It was his first and only passing grade. A triumph after years of struggle. But heartbreakingly, the student would never see it.
Just three days earlier, on 21 April, he had passed away from an infection following surgery for appendicitis. The news devastated Muslim and the school community. The boy had finally crossed the finish line &mdash; but life had taken him before he could bask in that success.
&ldquo;Suddenly I miss him,&rdquo; wrote fellow SMK Gemas teacher Mas Masliana. &ldquo;He was such a well-mannered boy.&rdquo;
A Final Farewell and A Prayer
In his post, Muslim&rsquo;s farewell to his student was deeply personal and spiritual. It captured the raw grief of an educator who had invested years of care into a young life &mdash; only to lose it just as hope began to bloom.
&ldquo;You don&rsquo;t have many sins,&rdquo; he wrote to the boy. &ldquo;Maybe when the time comes, if I&rsquo;m on the other side, you could ask God to forgive me.&rdquo;

According to Education Director-General Datuk Azman Adnan, the national average grade (GPN) for the 2024 SPM was 4.49, an improvement from 4.60 recorded in 2023. In the Malaysian examination system, a lower GPN denotes better overall performance. This makes the 2024 cohort the best-performing since the Malaysian Qualifications Framework was realigned over a decade ago.
Of the 402,956 candidates who sat for the exams, 355,933 students &mdash; or 94 per cent &mdash; qualified for the SPM certificate by passing Bahasa Melayu and History, both of which are compulsory. Additionally, 14,179 candidates (3.7 per cent) achieved straight As across all subjects (A+, A, or A-), marking a significant increase from the 12,087 candidates (3.1 per cent) who achieved similar results in 2023.

<li>Melaka posted a GPN of 4.43, with 414 students earning straight As. Sixteen of these candidates scored A+ in all subjects.</li>
<li>Johor exceeded the national average with a GPN of 4.36. The number of straight-A students rose from 1,247 in 2023 to 1,513 in 2024.</li>
<li>Penang improved to a GPN of 4.39, with 819 candidates achieving at least A- in all subjects.</li>
<li>Selangor, Malaysia&rsquo;s most populous state, recorded a GPN of 4.59 &mdash; slightly better than 4.62 in 2023 &mdash; with 2,368 students obtaining straight As.</li>
<li>Negeri Sembilan outperformed many with a GPN of 4.18 and 804 straight-A achievers.</li>
<li>Kelantan saw a GPN of 4.62, with 436 students scoring straight As.</li>
<li>Other states, including Kuala Lumpur (4.24 GPN), Perlis (4.66), Pahang (4.56), Sarawak (4.92), and Sabah (5.10), also demonstrated modest improvements in overall performance.</li>

Alarming Increase in Students Failing All Subjects

The Ministry attributes this to a mix of academic and socioeconomic challenges. Some students continue to struggle with foundational skills due to lingering effects of pandemic-era disruptions, while others face unstable home environments or a lack of academic support. Fatigue from juggling school and part-time jobs &mdash; especially in urban areas &mdash; has also been identified as a major contributing factor.
&ldquo;We found that some students were working night shifts and attending school during the day, which naturally impacts their focus and performance,&rdquo; said Education Director-General Datuk Azman Adnan. &ldquo;These are systemic issues that must be addressed.&rdquo;
Dropouts and Absenteeism: Thousands Did Not Sit for the Exam

To tackle this, Penang has rolled out the Jom SPM outreach programme, aimed at re-engaging at-risk students. Led by District Education Offices (PPDs), the initiative collaborates with community leaders and civil society groups to conduct targeted home visits and provide counselling and support.
Ministry&rsquo;s Next Steps: Targeted Support and Strategic Partnerships
The Ministry of Education has pledged a detailed post-mortem of the 2024 results to identify root causes of both failure and absenteeism. Datuk Azman emphasised that the Ministry will not rest on the laurels of improved averages alone.
&ldquo;Inclusive success is our target. We are pleased with the national progress, but equally mindful of the students left behind,&rdquo; he said.
The Ministry plans to expand remedial classes, enhance after-school tutoring programmes, and strengthen collaboration with NGOs, parent-teacher associations, and youth agencies. Jamal Abdillah Also Clarifies: &ldquo;I Didn&rsquo;t Set a Fee&rdquo;

Veteran entertainer Datuk Jamal Abdillah also spoke out, stating he performed at the request of KKM&rsquo;s secretary-general, a long-time friend. He revealed he accepted only a modest token of appreciation and did not negotiate a performance fee.
&ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t much, just a few thousand ringgit only,&rdquo; he told Malaysiakini. &ldquo;But I was pleased to be able to entertain the Prime Minister and KKM staff.&rdquo;
Images from the event showed both singers performing in front of a full audience, supported by background dancers&mdash;visuals that many on social media interpreted as being at odds with the ministry&rsquo;s reported financial struggles.
Medical Staff Share Stories of Strained Resources
In the days following the event, medical workers began sharing personal accounts online of their daily struggles. One post described a health clinic that had to crowdfund internally just to organise a modest Raya celebration. Another detailed how KKM staff at a clinic in Sabah had to pool their own money to pay a part-time cleaner.
Several also claimed that overtime payments had been withheld for months, while others pointed to long-delayed promotions and salary increments. These revelations painted a bleak contrast to the glamour of the Putrajaya event and fed into a broader narrative of discontent within the healthcare system.

Many were especially upset that KKM had proceeded with such a grand affair when other government-linked entities had opted for restraint. PETRONAS, for instance, cancelled its Raya event following the tragic gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights. Similarly, Khazanah Nasional suspended its planned celebrations out of respect for the passing of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
These examples were repeatedly cited online to criticise KKM&rsquo;s perceived tone-deafness, with public sentiment turning sharply against what was seen as a ministry disconnected from the plight of its own staff.

The controversy has reignited longstanding conversations about the structural problems plaguing Malaysia&rsquo;s public healthcare system&mdash;particularly around workforce treatment, contract doctor insecurity, and ministry budgeting.
Although Dr Dzulkefly&rsquo;s apology and acknowledgment have helped defuse some tensions, many remain sceptical and are demanding action rather than platitudes.
