Malaysia has long struggled with a high number of road fatalities, many of which are linked to speeding or drivers losing control of their vehicles. In a decisive move to tackle this issue, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced a significant upgrade to the country&rsquo;s Automated Awareness Safety System (AwAS). The outdated static speed traps will be replaced with a state-of-the-art point-to-point monitoring system. This new technology will track average speeds over longer distances, ensuring drivers maintain consistent speeds rather than merely slowing down momentarily at camera locations. This initiative aims to promote safer driving habits and reduce the alarming number of road accidents in Malaysia.
How the New System Works

The new point-to-point system addresses this loophole by monitoring the time it takes for vehicles to travel between two checkpoints. If a driver completes the journey faster than the calculated time based on the speed limit, they will face penalties.
Explaining the new approach, Loke remarked, &ldquo;We want drivers to maintain a safe speed over the entire stretch of road, not just in front of the camera. The new system ensures a more consistent adherence to speed limits.&rdquo;
Targeting High-Risk Zones

The initial deployment of the upgraded AwAS cameras will focus on some of Malaysia&rsquo;s most dangerous road stretches. These include the hilly Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway near Genting Sempah and the Menora Tunnel between Kuala Kangsar and Ipoh. Both areas are notorious for speeding-related accidents, especially involving heavy vehicles navigating steep descents.
&ldquo;These are high-risk zones where drivers tend to speed, especially on downhill stretches,&rdquo; Loke explained. &ldquo;By implementing this system, we aim to reduce accidents and fatalities in these hazardous areas.&rdquo;
A Broader Road Safety Strategy

The new system is part of a larger strategy to improve road safety and reduce Malaysia's alarming accident statistics. In 2024 alone, over 532,000 road accidents were reported, with more than 5,300 resulting in fatalities. Malaysia currently has the highest road fatality rate per 100,000 people in Asia, a statistic the government is determined to change.
To complement the upgraded AwAS system, the Ministry of Transport is also introducing a high-speed weigh-in-motion (HS-WIM) camera system. Set to be operational by September 2025, this system will monitor overweight lorries, a frequent cause of fatal collisions. Ten cameras will be installed in areas with heavy traffic and a high incidence of accidents.
Deterrence Through Technology and Tougher Penalties

Moreover, the Transport Ministry plans to review and amend laws to impose heftier fines for speeding offences. This, combined with the new surveillance technology, is expected to deter reckless driving and encourage safer behaviour on the roads.

This initiative is not merely about issuing fines; it&rsquo;s about changing driving habits and saving lives. By ensuring consistent speed adherence, the government hopes to significantly reduce road accidents and fatalities. Loke emphasised, &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just enforcement&mdash;it&rsquo;s about fostering a culture of road safety in Malaysia.&rdquo;
The era of quickly tapping the brakes at known speed camera spots is coming to an end. With the introduction of the point-to-point monitoring system, drivers will need to stay consistently mindful of speed limits throughout their journeys, paving the way for safer roads across Malaysia.&nbsp;

A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. The ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was carrying 65 people on board&mdash;53 passengers and 12 crew members&mdash;along with 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.
The ferry capsized at approximately 11:20pm, and by 12:22am, it was found overturned and drifting. Initial reports point to a combination of engine trouble and rough weather conditions, with waves reaching up to two metres (6.5 feet), contributing to the tragic incident.
Death Toll Rises as Search Efforts Intensify

Authorities have deployed nine rescue vessels, two tugboats, two inflatable boats, and a helicopter, alongside a team of underwater divers and local fishermen, to aid in the rescue operation.
According to Nanang Sigit, head of the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office, search efforts are focused along the waters between the accident site and Gilimanuk Port, where several early survivors were found. He added that the improved weather on Thursday has allowed for a more concentrated water-based search.

He and three others used life jackets to remain afloat through the night. Others were less fortunate&mdash;some passengers were found unconscious, having clung to wreckage or floated alone until help arrived.
Families of the missing gathered at both Ketapang and Gilimanuk ports, anxiously awaiting updates. Some broke down in tears; others called out the names of loved ones still unaccounted for.

In a forward-looking initiative, teachers across the state are receiving specialised AI training, enabling them to introduce this transformative technology into their classrooms &mdash; not just as a tool, but as a teaching philosophy grounded in ethics, innovation, and impact.
This initiative is driven by a desire to ensure that education in Sarawak does not lag behind global technological trends, while also responding directly to the needs and aspirations of teachers on the ground.
The Moral Compass of Technology

Using the analogy of a kitchen knife, he explained that while tools can serve many beneficial purposes, they can also cause harm if misused. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why education is key. AI must be used to improve lives, not to damage them. Our role is to guide that process.&rdquo;
He further highlighted AI&rsquo;s growing role in Sarawak&rsquo;s economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and the social sector, making it imperative that educators are equipped to keep up with changing demands across all industries.
Hands-On Innovation: A Glimpse into the Training Programme

This &ldquo;Train-the-Trainer&rdquo; programme offered a dual-track approach:

<li>One teacher shared that using games like &ldquo;Werewolf&rdquo; helped illustrate logic flow and decision-making in a way that was accessible and engaging for young learners. &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t just about the coding &mdash; it was about storytelling, ethics, and problem-solving,&rdquo; they said.</li>

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers joined the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), which delved deeper into AI integration through PictoBlox, a visual programming platform, and AI-integrated Arduino hardware. Teachers were mentored by IEEE student volunteers, who helped them explore how AI could be used to solve community challenges.
One standout project was a visual aid device for the visually impaired, developed by a team of teachers with no prior coding experience. Using image recognition and motion sensors, they prototyped a tool that could guide visually impaired students through school corridors &mdash; a powerful reminder of how innovation can arise when empathy and technology intersect.
Empowering Educators, Empowering Students

We spark a ripple effect &mdash; one that can influence an entire generation to see innovation not as something abstract, but as a tool for solving real problems.&rdquo;
Chumbaka, known for its storytelling-based approach to digital education, sees this model as one that could be scaled across Malaysia. The organisation emphasises inclusivity &mdash; ensuring that schools even in smaller towns like Miri are not left behind as AI and digital literacy become global imperatives.
Looking Ahead: From Pilot to Policy
The Sarawak government now appears committed to expanding this initiative statewide, with strong indications that similar programmes will reach rural and interior schools in the near future. Premier Abang Johari has reiterated his belief that AI should be woven into every sector &mdash; and that education is where this transformation must begin.
Deputy Minister Abdullah also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries, universities, and civil society in building a tech-literate population. &ldquo;The interest is already there among our teachers. Our job is to nurture it, support it, and scale it.&rdquo;

Effective from 1 July, the Medical (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and the Medical Act (Amendment) 2024 have come into force. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad described the changes as a major step towards creating a more transparent, inclusive, and competency-based system for medical specialists.
Key features of the amendments include:

The reforms aim not only to fill existing gaps in specialist availability but also to provide long-term stability for Malaysia&rsquo;s healthcare system&mdash;by improving training pipelines, retaining local talent, and ensuring more equitable distribution of expertise across the country.
