A man in Shanghai, China, was left 200,000 yuan (approximately RM130,000) poorer after unknowingly transferring money to his long-distance "girlfriend", who turned out to be an elaborate creation of artificial intelligence (AI).
The victim, known as Liu, was deceived by a scam syndicate that used AI-generated images and videos of a young woman, known as "Ms. Jiao", to manipulate him into believing he was in a real romantic relationship. According to a report by China Central Television (CCTV), the syndicate utilised advanced AI software to fabricate realistic photos and videos, making the deception highly convincing.
A Love Story That Turned Into a Costly Trap

To solidify her credibility, "Ms. Jiao" even provided Liu with a copy of her identity card, along with medical records of her supposed family members and purchase orders related to her "business". The intricate details were enough to convince Liu that she was a real person.
Liu, despite having never met "Ms. Jiao" in person, remained emotionally invested. The scam continued for two months, with frequent conversations and exchanges of photos and videos that strengthened his belief in the authenticity of the relationship.
The Truth Unfolds

Chinese authorities discovered that the images and videos sent to Liu depicted "Ms. Jiao" engaging in daily activities, such as painting and walking in the city, all carefully generated using AI technology. Investigators also revealed that the syndicate operated as a team, coordinating their efforts to deceive victims with a combination of fabricated documents and AI-generated visuals.
Further analysis revealed that the fraudsters used advanced AI generative technology to manipulate voices and facial expressions, making the fake persona appear lifelike in video calls. The use of AI in scams has allowed criminals to deceive victims with an unprecedented level of realism.

A 25-year-old British software engineer has gone missing in Kuala Lumpur after a night out in Bangsar, prompting a desperate search by his family and police in both Malaysia and the UK.

Jordan Michael John Johnson-Doyle, from Merseyside, England, was last heard from on the evening of Tuesday, 27 May. At around 8pm, he sent a photograph of a pub quiz poster at Healy Mac&rsquo;s Irish Bar in Bangsar to his best friend, which now marks his final known communication.
Jordan, who has been backpacking solo through Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean for the past 18 months while working remotely for a US-based company, had arrived in Malaysia from Vietnam on 17 May. He was believed to be staying at the Robertson Residences in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
Family Raises Alarm After Uncharacteristic Silence
His mother, Leanne Burnett, became alarmed when she didn&rsquo;t hear from him the following day, something she describes as completely out of character. The two last spoke on Monday, 26 May, with no indication of anything amiss.
&ldquo;He always checks in regularly because he knows how worried we get,&rdquo; she told the Daily Mail. &ldquo;If he had lost his phone or laptop, he knows my number by heart. He&rsquo;d go to a hotel or an internet caf&eacute; to get in touch. The silence is just not like him.&rdquo;
Phone Signal Lost After Three Days

However, the location had not updated for 11 hours. The phone then went completely silent by Friday, 30 May, suggesting it may have either run out of battery or been turned off.
&ldquo;Tracking him throughout the day didn&rsquo;t help &mdash; the location never changed. It was like he just disappeared,&rdquo; she added. &ldquo;We have no idea what has happened, but something is seriously wrong.&rdquo;
Efforts to Locate Jordan Intensify

He also advised the public to avoid speculation.

&ldquo;We&rsquo;re preparing to fly to Malaysia to search for him ourselves. I just want to get over there, find him, and bring him home,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This is every parent&rsquo;s worst nightmare.&rdquo;
Jordan is described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, of medium build, with shoulder-length mousy brown hair usually tied in a bun. At the time of his disappearance, he was in Bangsar, a popular nightlife district in Kuala Lumpur.

As the search intensifies, both British and Malaysian authorities, along with Jordan&rsquo;s loved ones, are urging the public to assist in any way possible. Leaving Home for Better Prospects
Sofi&rsquo;s migration to Malaysia began in 2016, initially as a student furthering her education. But her long-term ambition was clear &mdash; she wanted to build a stable and successful life abroad. Better Pay and Tangible Benefits

This salary not only covered her living expenses but also allowed her to save &mdash; something that might not have been possible had she stayed in her home country.
What truly impressed her, however, was the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), or Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP). She highlighted the 12&ndash;13% employer contribution as being much higher than what she would have received back home. This benefit, she said, made her feel more financially secure and gave her the assurance that she was building long-term savings.
Years of disciplined saving eventually paid off, and Sofi proudly shared that she was able to purchase her own car in Malaysia, spending around 40 million rupiah, or approximately RM10,440. While she didn&rsquo;t specify whether the car was new or used, the purchase marked a major personal milestone.

Shopee sellers are bracing for yet another increase in operational costs as the e-commerce platform confirmed a hike in its SPayLater seller fee. The change, set to take effect on 8 May 2025, will see the fee rise from 3.5% to 4.5% for all completed orders involving the SPayLater payment option.

What Is SPayLater?

Instalments up to three months typically carry no extra fees for buyers, but longer tenures can incur charges of up to 36%, depending on the duration.
However, while buyers may choose whether or not to use SPayLater, sellers are automatically enrolled in the programme with no option to opt out. This means they must absorb the associated transaction fee regardless of whether they benefit directly from the instalment feature.
Why Are Sellers Frustrated?

&ldquo;My business has to contend with more and more extra fees, and I&rsquo;d need to hire someone just to operate and manage the sales channel,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s pushed my business away from focusing too much effort towards selling on Shopee.&rdquo;
A Pattern of Increasing Charges

Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. &ldquo;Without major reforms in our education and economic frameworks, we are condemning our youth to a future dominated by low-skilled, low-paying jobs,&rdquo; he said. He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.

&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress
