Some brokers even go as far as posing as importers themselves, offering to handle the documentation and falsely declare the goods as Malaysian-made.
&ldquo;Many clients are now choosing to route Chinese products through Malaysia and claim they are made here,&rdquo; said one freight broker to Bloomberg. The motivation is clear: while Chinese goods are currently facing tariffs as high as 145% in the United States, products genuinely originating from Malaysia are only subject to a 24% import duty.
The scheme is not only unethical but also illegal under US customs law. False declarations of origin constitute a serious offence and may result in civil or criminal penalties for all parties involved &mdash; including sellers, brokers, and importers. As of now, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not officially confirmed whether enforcement has been ramped up, though they have reiterated that public reports and complaints through their online portal remain a key part of enforcement efforts.

Some Chinese companies are now resorting to third-country transhipment strategies to sidestep duties &mdash; with Malaysia and even South Korea among the countries being exploited as part of this growing black market workaround.

The violations include Chinese-made cathode materials and surveillance equipment that were either reassembled in South Korea or relabelled outright before being shipped to the United States. Some of these goods had already been exported, while others were intercepted at the port.
In response, the Korea Customs Service has launched a special task force and is working closely with US authorities to crack down on these illegal transhipment practices. All violations are expected to be forwarded to prosecutors for legal action.
Malaysia Urged to Act Swiftly to Protect Its Trade Integrity
Malaysian trade analysts are now sounding the alarm. If this misuse continues unchecked, Malaysia&rsquo;s international credibility as a law-abiding trade partner could be at risk. The country's legitimate exporters may find themselves subject to heightened scrutiny by US authorities, leading to delays, increased compliance checks, and potential blacklisting.
There are growing calls for the Malaysian government to act decisively. The incident, which occurred on the stretch of road between Gerik and Jeli, cut through the heart of the Royal Belum State Park and Temengor Forest Reserve &mdash; two of Malaysia&rsquo;s most biodiverse and ecologically critical landscapes. These forests are key habitats for Malayan elephants, tapirs, sun bears, and the critically endangered Malayan tiger.
WWF-Malaysia: Short-Term Action is Crucial

WWF-Malaysia outlined a series of practical, cost-effective measures that the government and road authorities can implement to save lives &mdash; both animal and human:

<li>Expand wildlife corridor mapping to update where animals are currently moving due to habitat fragmentation.</li>

These solutions, WWF notes, have been tested elsewhere in Malaysia with measurable success. For instance, a 200-metre wildlife viaduct at KM157 of the Gerik-Jeli Highway, built under the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan in 2015, has shown promise in reducing roadkill incidents &mdash; but it's currently the only one across a 100km stretch of road.
Shrinking Habitat, Rising Conflict

Peninsular Malaysia&rsquo;s elephant population is estimated at fewer than 1,500 individuals, and their habitat is shrinking rapidly. A 2016 study by WWF found that elephant roaming grounds in the peninsula have decreased by 68% over recent decades, largely due to land-use changes, agriculture, road expansion, and urban sprawl.
As a result, elephants are increasingly forced to cross roads and enter settlements in search of food and space, leading to rising conflict with humans. According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), between 2020 and 2024, there were 4,919 reported human-elephant conflict cases, causing RM39.4 million in damage to property, crops, and vehicles.
WWF-Malaysia is urging a more coordinated approach across agencies, states, and communities to protect remaining elephant habitats and minimise dangerous encounters.
Government Response: 39 Wildlife Crossings Upgraded

&ldquo;These signs and lighting systems aim to inform drivers they&rsquo;re entering areas frequently used by elephants moving between forest patches,&rdquo; said KKR in a public statement.
Authorities have also deployed electrified fencing, salt licks to lure elephants away from highways, and LED-based wildlife warning systems in several high-risk areas. While these efforts mark progress, conservation groups warn they are not enough unless supported by stronger enforcement and more physical barriers to prevent accidents.
Calls for Broader, Tech-Based Solutions

<li>Slow down and dim your lights if you see animals or receive headlight signals from other vehicles.</li>
<li>Never use high beams, honk, or provoke elephants &mdash; these actions may trigger aggression.</li>
<li>Do not stop to take photos or approach elephants. These are wild animals and can react unpredictably.</li>
<li>Turn back if an elephant displays warning signs such as ear flapping, trumpeting, or mock charges.</li>
</ul>
Remember, elephants can move up to 40km/h and may attack if threatened.
The Bigger Picture: Coexistence Requires Collective Effort

Getting started is simple. Users only need to link their ShopeePay or TNG eWallet accounts to Google Pay and complete a one-time verification using their eWallet&rsquo;s app.
Once this is done, users can:

<li>Select Google Pay or the &ldquo;eWallet&rdquo; option at checkout</li>
<li>Complete payments with a single tap, secured by biometric (fingerprint) or PIN authentication</li>

Each transaction is protected by robust security protocols, and all eWallet-based payments on Google Pay will continue to require verification for added peace of mind.
Beyond Payments: Top-Ups and Future Features
In addition to making payments easier, users can also top up their eWallet balances directly through Google Pay &mdash; removing the need to switch between different apps. This function adds a layer of efficiency to money management, allowing users to keep their accounts funded without the extra friction of multiple apps.
Even more convenience is on the horizon. Google has confirmed that it is working to roll out a feature allowing users to view their eWallet balances directly within Google Pay, consolidating both payment and balance-tracking in one place.
What&rsquo;s Not Included (Yet)
It&rsquo;s worth noting that this eWallet integration is currently limited to mobile web transactions via Google Chrome on Android devices. It does not extend to Google Wallet or support tap-to-pay functionality at physical retailers &mdash; meaning users cannot yet pay with ShopeePay or TNG eWallet by tapping their phone or smartwatch at a checkout terminal.
This may be a disappointment to some, but Google&rsquo;s decision reflects a phased approach, starting with online payments and potentially expanding into in-store use cases in future updates.
