Malaysia Becomes First In Southeast Asia To Launch ShopeePay & TNG eWallet Integration On Google Pay

No more switching apps — just tap and pay!

Google Pay has taken a major step forward in its regional payment strategy by introducing ShopeePay and Touch 'n Go (TNG) eWallet integration in Malaysia.

The move makes Malaysia the first country in Southeast Asia to support this kind of eWallet connectivity on the platform — marking a significant evolution in how Malaysians shop, pay, and manage their money online.

With the new feature, Android users can now make payments using their preferred local eWallets directly via mobile websites on Google Chrome, simplifying the digital checkout process and offering more inclusive options for those without credit or debit cards.

A Frictionless Way to Shop Online

Previously, Google Pay users were limited to traditional card-based payments. Now, by linking ShopeePay or TNG eWallet, users can access seamless online checkouts with just a few taps.
No more app-switching. No more tedious logins or manual top-ups. Just click the Google Pay button or select the “eWallet” option at checkout to pay instantly through your linked account.

This new convenience applies to a growing number of participating merchants in Malaysia. Currently, it is available with businesses that use payment gateways Fiuu and iPay88, including:

  • Nando’s
  • US Pizza
  • Alpro Pharmacy
  • TK Bakery
  • Yoyo Bus

The number of merchants is expected to expand as Google rolls out further support for local partners.

Why This Integration Matters

This development is more than a tech upgrade — it’s a strategic shift aimed at digital inclusion and local relevance.
By incorporating ShopeePay and TNG eWallet into Google Pay, Google is actively catering to the financial habits of Malaysian consumers, many of whom are more reliant on mobile eWallets than on credit cards.

As noted by Farhan S. Qureshi, Country Director for Google Malaysia:

“By integrating with trusted local platforms like ShopeePay and TNG eWallet, we are localising Google Pay to match their everyday payment preferences, and delivering a frictionless and secure manner when shopping on their favourite mobile sites on Google Chrome.”

This also supports broader financial access for underbanked or unbanked communities, who may not qualify for conventional cards but are digitally literate and active on mobile platforms.

One-Time Setup, One-Click Payments

Getting started is simple. Users only need to link their ShopeePay or TNG eWallet accounts to Google Pay and complete a one-time verification using their eWallet’s app.

Once this is done, users can:

  • Shop online at participating mobile websites
  • Select Google Pay or the “eWallet” option at checkout
  • Complete payments with a single tap, secured by biometric (fingerprint) or PIN authentication

Each transaction is protected by robust security protocols, and all eWallet-based payments on Google Pay will continue to require verification for added peace of mind.

Beyond Payments: Top-Ups and Future Features

In addition to making payments easier, users can also top up their eWallet balances directly through Google Pay — removing the need to switch between different apps. This function adds a layer of efficiency to money management, allowing users to keep their accounts funded without the extra friction of multiple apps.

Even more convenience is on the horizon. Google has confirmed that it is working to roll out a feature allowing users to view their eWallet balances directly within Google Pay, consolidating both payment and balance-tracking in one place.

What’s Not Included (Yet)

It’s worth noting that this eWallet integration is currently limited to mobile web transactions via Google Chrome on Android devices. It does not extend to Google Wallet or support tap-to-pay functionality at physical retailers — meaning users cannot yet pay with ShopeePay or TNG eWallet by tapping their phone or smartwatch at a checkout terminal.

This may be a disappointment to some, but Google’s decision reflects a phased approach, starting with online payments and potentially expanding into in-store use cases in future updates.

Powering Malaysia’s Cashless Future

This integration positions Malaysia as a fintech frontrunner in Southeast Asia, showcasing its digital maturity and the widespread adoption of local platforms like ShopeePay and TNG eWallet. As eWallets become essential for everything from food delivery to online shopping, the move is set to accelerate cashless adoption and offer a safer, more seamless alternative to card-based payments — particularly for mobile-first users.

Looking ahead, Google aims to support more eWallet partners, further localising its services to match Malaysia’s fast-growing digital economy. If successful, the initiative could set the standard for similar innovations across the region — proving that the future of online payments is not just global, but also deeply local.
