Malaysia&rsquo;s build-up to the 2026 Thomas Cup has been anything but straightforward. Zii Jia reportedly presented several terms before agreeing to participate and requested a week to consider BAM&rsquo;s offer. Chong Wei described the meeting as &ldquo;smooth and constructive&rdquo; but acknowledged that time was a critical factor.
&ldquo;There are several terms discussed, and we have already given our response,&rdquo; he said, adding that discussions had also involved BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and council members under the association&rsquo;s new management structure.
With Malaysia expected to field four singles players and three doubles pairs in Horsens, Zii Jia&rsquo;s indecision posed a significant challenge to team planning and training schedules.

Chong Wei had stressed that Zii Jia&rsquo;s inclusion would significantly strengthen Malaysia&rsquo;s singles department. He could slot in as the second or third singles player, providing valuable balance and depth.
&ldquo;If he joins the team, the squad will be stronger,&rdquo; Chong Wei had said, underlining BAM&rsquo;s commitment to finding common ground.

In an <a href="https://x.com/TeamLZJ/status/2025909361042952610">official statement</a> released by Team LZJ, it was confirmed that he had reached an agreement with BAM to be part of Malaysia&rsquo;s 2026 Thomas Cup squad &mdash; without imposing any demands.
&ldquo;Zii Jia has agreed to waive his image rights fee in order to represent the country at the upcoming Thomas Cup, reflecting his commitment and dedication to Malaysia,&rdquo; the statement read.
The decision marks a notable shift from earlier reports suggesting compensation was under consideration.
Zii Jia also expressed appreciation to BAM&rsquo;s leadership, particularly president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Lee Chong Wei, for placing their trust in him.
Observers have described the move as symbolic &mdash; a gesture signalling maturity, reconciliation, and a renewed focus on collective ambition.
Support Beyond the Court

NSI chief executive Dr P. Vellapandian stated that no charges would be imposed on Zii Jia if he sought treatment, despite his status as an independent professional. Typically, BAM players enjoy complimentary services, while professionals bear their own costs.
&ldquo;As long as he is wearing the Malaysian jersey and competing overseas, the NSI will support him,&rdquo; Vellapandian said.
The gesture reflects a broader national commitment to prioritising team success over structural differences.
