Online banking scams have become an increasing concern in Malaysia over the past few years, with many victims losing large sums of money through unauthorised transfers and mule accounts.
In a significant ruling that could have wider implications for banking security and scam-related cases, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court has found Maybank liable for negligence after a customer lost RM166,000 through suspicious online transactions.
The court ordered the bank to compensate the victim after concluding that the unusual activity on the customer&rsquo;s account should have raised red flags and prompted further investigation.
Court Finds Bank Negligent

Judge Maimoonah Aid ruled in favour of customer Chan Yan Li, allowing her civil claim against the bank and ordering Maybank to pay RM166,000 in damages.
The bank was also instructed to pay an additional RM15,000 in legal costs. The case stemmed from a series of unauthorised online banking transactions that took place between June and July 2021.
According to court documents, money was first transferred from Chan&rsquo;s housing loan account into her savings account before being moved in stages to several third-party accounts belonging to unknown individuals.
Chan only discovered the transactions nearly two weeks later, on 15 July 2021, after checking her Maybank2u account. She later lodged a police report over the incident.
Victim Denied Authorising Transfers

During proceedings, Chan maintained that she never approved the transfers and insisted she did not receive any Transaction Authorisation Code (TAC) messages or app notifications linked to the suspicious transactions.
However, Maybank denied wrongdoing and argued that all transactions were conducted using the correct username and password associated with Chan&rsquo;s account.
The bank also claimed that TAC messages and transaction alerts had been successfully sent to her registered mobile number, while maintaining there were no issues with the Maybank2u system.
In its defence, the bank further suggested that Chan&rsquo;s banking information may have been exposed due to negligence on her part.
Suspicious Activity Raised Red Flags

Despite the bank&rsquo;s arguments, the court found several inconsistencies during the trial. Judge Maimoonah pointed to contradictions between TAC records submitted by the bank and phone records provided by telecommunications company Digi.
The court also found that some transactions did not trigger SMS alerts, while several transfers were carried out during unusual hours, including around 5am.
In her judgment, the judge noted that Chan was not an active online banking user and only used the Maybank2u platform for basic transactions such as credit card payments and occasional money transfers to family members.
The sudden surge in account activity over a short period of time was deemed highly unusual and should have prompted the bank to conduct further checks or investigations.
&ldquo;The bank should remain vigilant,&rdquo; the judge stated in her grounds of judgment.
She added that banks today possess advanced technology capable of detecting and preventing suspicious or fraudulent transactions.
The court further heard that several mule account holders connected to the transfers had already pleaded guilty in separate criminal cases involving concealment of stolen property and possession of stolen items.

Popular entrepreneur and content creator Khairul Aming has apologised to customers after a technical issue disrupted lunch service at his restaurant, Rembayung, leading to long waiting times and delayed entry for many diners.
The incident, which took place during the restaurant's busy lunch period, quickly gained attention on social media after customers shared videos and posts showing crowded waiting areas and describing the atmosphere as chaotic.

Staff had to write down every order individually before passing them to the kitchen, significantly slowing down food preparation and affecting the restaurant's scheduled dining slots.
The delays during the lunchtime service also had a knock-on effect on later reservations, with customers booked for the 2pm session reportedly having to wait longer before they could be seated.

In a post shared on Threads, Khairul Aming wrote:
"Sorry for today's chaotic lunch service. Throughout six months of operating, today is the first time our StoreHub POS system went down, causing every order to fail to reach the kitchen.
"We had to manually write every single order, which delayed food preparation during the lunch slot and caused the 2pm session to be pushed back. The system is still down for now, but the situation is under control for the 4.30pm slot onwards."
Operations Gradually Returned To Normal
Despite the unexpected disruption, Khairul Aming assured customers that his team acted quickly to minimise the impact.
While the POS system remained unavailable for some time, the restaurant continued operating using manual processes to ensure customers could still be served.
According to his update, operations became significantly more manageable by the 4.30pm dining session as staff adapted to the temporary workflow while waiting for the system to recover.
The incident also highlighted how heavily modern restaurants rely on digital ordering systems, where even a brief technical outage can quickly affect kitchen operations, table turnover and customer waiting times.

The removal of the RM1 interbank ATM withdrawal fee has been welcomed by many Malaysians, but it has also caused some confusion after several people reported they were still being charged despite the new policy taking effect on 1 July.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has now clarified that the fee waiver does not apply to every ATM in the country. Instead, it only covers ATMs and Smart Recycler Machines (SRMs) that are owned and operated by banks participating in the shared ATM network.
If you are withdrawing cash from one bank's ATM using another bank's debit card, you should no longer be charged the RM1 fee&mdash;provided the machine belongs to a participating bank.
Why Are Some ATMs Still Charging RM1?

According to Fahmi, around 84% of the country's approximately 16,000 ATMs are owned by banks and are covered under the new fee exemption.
The remaining 16% are operated by independent, non-bank companies, which continue to charge the RM1 withdrawal fee as part of their own commercial business model.
These privately operated ATMs are not included in the industry-wide initiative announced by Malaysia's banking sector and therefore remain free to impose the transaction fee.
Fahmi explained that these machines generally operate under separate commercial agreements that differ from those governing the country's banking network.
How To Tell Whether An ATM Is Covered

If you're unsure whether you'll be charged, Fahmi says there's a simple way to tell.
Bank-operated ATMs usually display a prominent bank logo, making them easy to identify.
Meanwhile, independently operated ATMs typically do not carry the branding of a single bank and are instead managed by third-party operators.
As a result, customers using these privately operated machines should still expect the RM1 interbank withdrawal fee to apply.
What Should You Do If You're Still Charged At A Bank ATM?

According to him, the central bank will investigate whether the charge resulted from a technical issue, an operational error or non-compliance with the new directive by the financial institution involved.
Consumers are also encouraged to keep their transaction receipts or bank statements showing the deduction, as these can help speed up the investigation process.
Bank Negara has been tasked with ensuring banks comply with the new fee waiver and protecting consumers from being wrongly charged.
More Than 14,000 Bank ATMs Now Offer Free Interbank Withdrawals

The fee waiver, which came into effect on 1 July, was introduced through a joint initiative by the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM), the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM), the Association of Development Finance Institutions Malaysia (ADFIM) and Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet).
Under the initiative, debit cardholders can now make unlimited interbank cash withdrawals at more than 14,000 bank-operated ATMs and Smart Recycler Machines (SRMs) nationwide without paying the RM1 fee.
The move is aimed at making cash withdrawals more convenient and affordable by allowing customers to use participating ATMs regardless of which bank issued their debit card.

After several days of disruption caused by a cyberattack, motorists across Selangor can once again use the Smart Selangor Parking and Flexi Parking apps to pay for parking as normal.
Both platforms confirmed on 2 July that their services have now been fully restored following recovery works and extensive system testing. This also means that parking enforcement by local councils has officially resumed, so drivers are once again required to pay for parking according to the usual rates and time limits to avoid receiving a parking summons.
In separate announcements, both Smart Selangor Parking and Flexi Parking thanked users for their patience throughout the outage and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
What Happened To The Parking System?

The disruption began on 30 June, when motorists suddenly found themselves unable to make parking payments through the affected applications.
Initially, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the issue was related to a system migration and instructed local councils across the state to temporarily suspend issuing parking summonses while the platform was unavailable.
However, Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim later confirmed that the outage was caused by a cyberattack involving the Flexi Parking system.

Malaysia's controversial yet highly successful Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 generated an estimated RM392.33 million in economic returns, according to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Speaking during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Tiong said the festival demonstrated the effectiveness of event-based tourism in driving visitor spending, economic activity and international exposure under the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.
Held from 30 April to 2 May, the festival attracted approximately 415,000 visitors across Kuala Lumpur and six other locations nationwide, making it one of the country's largest tourism events this year.
Kuala Lumpur Led The Economic Impact

The flagship Rain Rave event in Bukit Bintang attracted around 250,000 visitors, comprising approximately 150,000 domestic tourists and 100,000 international visitors from countries including China, Japan, India, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.
According to Tiong, the Kuala Lumpur edition alone generated an estimated RM320.43 million in economic returns.
Meanwhile, companion events held in Terengganu, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Labuan and Langkawi attracted a further 165,000 visitors and contributed an estimated RM71.9 million.
Combined, the nationwide festival generated RM392.33 million in economic impact, with estimates calculated using Tourism Malaysia's Departing Visitors Survey (DVS) methodology, supported by data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
RM36 Return For Every RM1 Spent

Tiong revealed that the festival cost RM15 million to organise, with RM11 million funded by the government and RM4 million contributed by private-sector partners.
Based on the returns generated, every RM1 spent by the government delivered an estimated RM36 in economic value.
Although admission was free, Tiong said organisers could have generated substantial ticket revenue. Charging RM300 per ticket could have raised around RM75 million, while a RM200 ticket price could have generated approximately RM50 million.
However, the government chose to keep the event free as a gesture of appreciation to Malaysians in conjunction with Labour Day, while encouraging wider participation and promoting Visit Malaysia 2026.
Positive Impact On Businesses And Tourism Operators

The festival also delivered significant benefits to businesses in the Bukit Bintang-KLCC area.
According to feedback from the BBKLCC Tourism Association, Lot 10 recorded a 40% increase in visitor traffic and a 45% rise in sales during the festival period. Sungei Wang Plaza also reported a 31.3% increase in visitors alongside stronger sales performance.
The food and beverage sector experienced a boost as well, with Pavilion Kuala Lumpur reporting an 11% increase in average sales and higher walk-in customer numbers.
A total of 63 food stalls and 15 craft booths participated in the festival, generating direct sales of RM388,690.
Tiong highlighted the experience of one food vendor from Kelantan who reportedly earned RM4,600 on the first day, RM6,200 on the second day and approximately RM10,000 on the third day of the festival &mdash; far exceeding the vendor's usual daily earnings back home.
The tourism sector also benefited, with around 80 hotels nationwide offering discounts of between 30% and 50% during the festival period. Many participating hotels reportedly recorded occupancy rates close to full capacity, particularly in Kuala Lumpur and Bukit Bintang.

New MyKad-Based Subsidy Mechanism

Under the revised mechanism, Malaysians who qualify for the subsidy will be able to purchase diesel at RM2.10 per litre, while non-citizens and those who do not meet the eligibility requirements will have to pay the market rate.
The government said the reform is designed to create a uniform subsidy system nationwide while reducing leakages and the smuggling of subsidised diesel.
&ldquo;Diesel subsidies will be channelled directly to Malaysians through MyKad verification, while non-citizens and ineligible parties must purchase diesel at the unsubsidised price,&rdquo; the ministry said.
Standardising Diesel Prices Across Malaysia

Starting in July, the subsidised diesel price will be standardised nationwide at RM2.10 per litre for eligible Malaysians.
This means diesel vehicle owners in Sabah and Sarawak will see a reduction of five sen per litre from the current subsidised rate, while non-Malaysians in the region will no longer have access to subsidised diesel.
The government believes the nationwide implementation will ensure a fairer system where all eligible Malaysians enjoy the same price and purchasing mechanism regardless of where they live.
Tackling Leakages and Smuggling

Currently, unsubsidised diesel in Peninsular Malaysia is priced at RM4.37 per litre, more than double the newly announced subsidised rate.
By requiring MyKad verification at the point of purchase, the government hopes to close loopholes and ensure public funds are channelled directly to Malaysians who are entitled to receive assistance.
Significant Savings For Diesel Vehicle Owners

The move is also expected to benefit many individuals currently receiving diesel-related assistance through existing programmes such as BUDI Diesel, which provides monthly aid to eligible diesel vehicle owners, farmers and smallholders.
According to previous government data, BUDI Diesel has benefited around 340,000 eligible recipients, while the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS) serves more than 398,000 logistics and public transport vehicles through a fleet card system.

Good news for Malaysians who still rely on cash for their daily spending. Starting 1 July 2026, bank customers will no longer have to pay the RM1 fee when withdrawing money from another bank&rsquo;s ATM or Smart Recycler Machine (SRM), making cash withdrawals more convenient and affordable across the country.
The initiative, announced by Malaysia&rsquo;s banking industry in collaboration with Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet), means debit cardholders can enjoy unlimited free interbank cash withdrawals at more than 14,000 ATMs and SRMs nationwide.
No More RM1 Charge For Interbank Withdrawals

Previously, customers who withdrew cash from an ATM belonging to a different bank than the one that issued their debit card would be charged an RM1 fee for every transaction.

The waiver applies to all ATMs and Smart Recycler Machines operated by banks nationwide, giving users greater flexibility to use whichever machine is most convenient.
Unlimited Free Withdrawals Across More Than 14,000 Machines
The new initiative will provide debit cardholders with unlimited fee-free withdrawals through a network of over 14,000 banking machines across the country.
This means consumers no longer need to search for their own bank&rsquo;s ATM simply to avoid paying extra charges. Whether they are travelling, working in another town or simply using the nearest available machine, they can access their money without worrying about additional costs.

Although Malaysia continues to embrace digital payments and cashless transactions, the banking industry recognises that cash remains an essential payment method for many people.
For many Malaysians, particularly those in rural communities, small businesses or markets where cash is still commonly used, easy access to physical money remains important in managing daily expenses.
The banking associations said removing the interbank withdrawal fee reflects their commitment to providing reliable, inclusive and affordable banking services while helping to reduce the financial burden on consumers.
A Welcome Change For Consumers

The RM1 charge has long been criticised by members of the public, with many questioning why customers should pay extra simply to access their own money.
The fee was temporarily waived during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 to encourage people to use the nearest available ATM during movement restrictions. However, it returned in February 2022 after the temporary relief ended.
Its permanent removal is likely to be welcomed by regular cash users, particularly those living in areas where their own bank&rsquo;s ATM may not always be nearby.
While RM1 may seem like a small amount, the cost can quickly add up for people who make multiple withdrawals each month.
Supporting Both Cash And Cashless Payments

By removing the interbank withdrawal fee while continuing to improve digital banking services, the industry hopes to make financial services more inclusive and accessible for all Malaysians.
One Less Fee To Worry About
For consumers, the change means greater flexibility and savings every time they need cash. Whether withdrawing from an ATM at a shopping mall, petrol station or another bank branch, Malaysians can now do so without paying the additional RM1 charge.
With unlimited free interbank withdrawals becoming available from 1 July, accessing your own money is about to become a little simpler&mdash;and a little cheaper.

Malaysians Can Withdraw Cash From Any ATM For Free From July 1 As RM1 Interbank Fee Is Scrapped

Malaysians who are used to paying their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions over the counter will soon have to make the switch to digital alternatives.
Starting 1 July 2026, the EPF will officially close all contribution payment, or remittance, counters at its offices across the country as part of its ongoing efforts to modernise its services and encourage greater adoption of online platforms.
However, the agency has stressed that the closure only affects payment counters, with all other customer service counters continuing to operate as normal.
A Move Towards Digital Convenience

The decision marks another major step in EPF's transition towards a more digital-first ecosystem, reflecting a wider trend among government agencies and financial institutions to streamline services through technology.
According to EPF, members and employers will still have plenty of options to make their contribution payments without needing to visit a physical payment counter.
Alternative payment methods include:

<li>Internet banking platforms</li>
<li>Authorised bank agent counters</li>
<li>EPF Self-Service Terminals (SST)</li>
<li>Mobile KWSP Team and Relationship Advisory (RA) services</li>

The organisation believes these channels provide secure, accessible and efficient ways for contributors to complete their transactions while reducing reliance on manual counter services.
Employers Encouraged To Use i-Akaun

For employers, EPF is recommending the use of the i-Akaun (Employer) portal for contribution payments.

As more employers adopt digital systems for payroll and statutory payments, EPF hopes the platform will become the primary channel for contribution submissions going forward.
No Impact On Contribution Payments

Despite the closure of payment counters, EPF has assured members that their ability to make contributions will not be affected.

Anyone visiting an EPF branch for enquiries, account-related matters or other services will still be able to do so, as only the remittance counters are being discontinued.
