Most Malaysians know that Malaysia isn&rsquo;t a country that recognises cannabis for medical usage, and it&rsquo;s supposedly deemed &ldquo;illegal&rdquo; for use here. But hey, looks like we are going to have the shock of our loves right now.

According to Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Cannabis usage in Malaysia is legal as it&rsquo;s albeit for medical purpose only.

Khairy who is the Rembau MP had revealed this in a written reply to Muar counterpart, Syed Saddiq Rahman after he had argued on <a href="https://myc.com.my/articles/538/syed-saddiq-urges-government-to-look-into-legalising-medical-marijuana-and-hemp">legalising Medical Marijuana</a> in the Parliament back in September.
It&rsquo;s noted that marijuana (cannabis products made from fried flowers, leaves, stems and seeds of the cannabis) is permitted for medical purposes under the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, the Poisons Act 1952 and the Sale of Drugs Act 1952. Naturally, netizens were excited with the announcement.
Shocking isn&rsquo;t it? Don&rsquo;t worry many others are shocked as well.
Many had brought up some points on this. As most would know, if you are found to have a certain amount of marijuana, you&rsquo;ll be sentenced to death row. But now that it&rsquo;s deemed legal under the acts, doesn&rsquo;t that mean others in the wrong should be lifted off their sentence?

What cannabis products are allowed in Malaysia?
Khairy Jamaluddin says cannabis-containing products should be registered with the Drug Control Authority (DCA) as prescribed by the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulation 1984 under the Sale of Drugs Act.
Importers must have a license and import permit under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulation, the Poisons Act as well as the Dangerous Drugs Act, to bring such products into Malaysia.
Right now, only licensed dealers under the same regulation and Acts are allowed to carry out the wholesale trading of products that contain cannabis and only registered medical practitioners under Medical Act 1971 can conduct the sale or retail supply of such products.

Cannabis products can be sold or supplied to individuals upon prescription. As long as it&rsquo;s by a medical practitioner who has a Type A license, it will be fine.
Khairy went on to highlight that cannabis is regulated under the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961 and listed under Schedule I of the Convention.
&ldquo;Major controls imposed on listed materials in Schedule I are restricted only to medical and scientific purposes involving production, manufacture, export, import, distribution, trade, consumption and possession,&rdquo; said Khairy.
Well, this is definitely a shocker. I now wonder what will happen to those who have been sentenced to life/death for possession of medical cannabis. Hopefully the law and this announcement would change the sentence to those especially if they used it for medical purposes only.
