Have you ever gone abroad and see a brand you&rsquo;re familiar with and said to yourself, &ldquo;eh why is it named differently?&rdquo;
Well, it&rsquo;s no stranger that some products do have their own version and local name despite coming from the same manufacturer but this on the other hand can come out a bit racist.

Darlie toothpaste in China will have a new Chinese name starting March 2022. The Taiwan-based Hawley &amp; Hazel company who currently owns the brand says that Darlie&rsquo;s current name in Chinese (黑人牙膏)&nbsp;to &ldquo;Haolai&rdquo;&nbsp;(好來) reflects Hawley &amp; Hazel&rsquo;s name in Chinese.
But when you take a language outside of it&rsquo;s native country, there can be many other meanings to it and in this instance 黑人牙膏, which reads hēir&eacute;n y&aacute;gāo actually means &ldquo;black man toothpaste&rdquo;.

Well that&rsquo;s&hellip;. racist.
The company says that the change is accordance with Darlie&rsquo;s brand mantra of &ldquo;Good Things Come with a Smile&rdquo; as their mission is to help people to be more confident with more smiles.

Aside from a name change, new fonts will be used to emphasize the signature Darlie smile. The company says that the rename will help in Darlie&rsquo;s brand purpose as according to their values.
Does that mean the English name will change too?

No, don&rsquo;t worry the English name won&rsquo;t be changing. But oh man the irony that the Chinese name directly translate to &ldquo;black man toothpaste&rdquo;, did anyone ever questioned it?

Back in the past, the term &ldquo;Darkie&rdquo; is very popular in America and Europe referring to blacks. Due to it, there was tension among blacks as some people thought it contained racist elements.
The old logo had also featured a black man instead of the current white man logo we all know, and it was changed to be more polite to the community.
For those who don&rsquo;t know, &ldquo;Darlie&rdquo; also means &ldquo;black person&rdquo; in Chinese.

Initially, the name Darkie toothpaste was intended as a parody of an American minstrel performer, Al Jolson who was famous for his performances.

Well, as long as this goes notice then hopefully the company doesn&rsquo;t suffer from any other consequences. It&rsquo;s still strange that no one had ever brought this up until recently, but I guess that&rsquo;s one way to slowly prevent racism.

Darlie Toothpaste Rebrands In China As Name Translates To “Black Man Toothpaste”

&nbsp;Heavy rainfall in the early hours of Wednesday morning led to a landslide that caused part of a wall at an international school in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) to collapse. The incident occurred shortly before the start of the school day, prompting a swift emergency response and raising broader concerns about hillside safety in the Klang Valley.
The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call via the MERS999 emergency line at 7.18am. Within minutes, 15 firefighters from the TTDI and Sri Hartamas stations were dispatched to the scene, along with two fire engines &ndash; a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) vehicle.
Rapid Response Averts Potential Disaster

Operations commander Azkhan Hamdan, who led the response team, confirmed that the landslide had triggered the collapse of a section of the school&rsquo;s perimeter wall. Upon arrival, the team carried out a &ldquo;size-up&rdquo; assessment to evaluate the risk of further collapse and ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity.
&ldquo;Upon assessment, it was confirmed that the collapse had impacted various parts of the school infrastructure,&rdquo; Azkhan stated. &ldquo;Classrooms, the staff room, student toilets, and even the library sustained visible damage. In addition, two vehicles parked within the premises were also affected by falling debris.&rdquo;
Firefighters managed to stabilise the situation and secure the area by 7.55am. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among students, teachers, or nearby residents. The timing of the landslide, occurring just before the full arrival of students, likely prevented what could have been a far more serious incident.
School Operations Disrupted
Following the incident, the school temporarily suspended in-person classes to allow for safety checks and structural assessments. Parents were notified shortly after the incident, and arrangements were made for some students to be picked up early. Affected areas within the school were cordoned off, and emergency protocols were activated.
School officials expressed relief that no one was injured and thanked the fire and rescue personnel for their swift action. "We are working closely with authorities to ensure the safety and structural integrity of our buildings before resuming normal operations," a school spokesperson said.
City Hall Steps In for Follow-Up Action
