The More You Know

We all know Family Mart for being one of the fastest expanding Japanese convenient stores around Malaysia since it first opened back in Bukit Bintang in 2016.

At the time before all these new Korean marts came to town. Family Mart became some of the few places where people or even students went to for late night craves. I kid you not, Family Mart was a life saver back in the pre-pandemic days of doing assignments till 2am or 3am. 
Normally, you can spot the store from a distance with the bright interior and the very well recognizable green and blue sign board. But recently a post online went where someone found a Family Mart that&rsquo;s &ldquo;ran out of ink&rdquo; as their signboard was in black and white!

The black and white family mart is located in Cameron Centrum, Pahang and it definitely piqued everyone&rsquo;s interest as many Malaysians have not seen a black &amp; white Family Mart in Malaysia.
Was this Black &amp; White sign intentional?
In fact, it is. There is a reason behind the meaning of the black &amp; white sign and to understand it, we&rsquo;ll need to look at the culture of the land of the rising sun or also known as Japan.
Twitter user Aqilah (@aqilahbaik) revealed that it&rsquo;s something a bit more common in Japan. Black &amp; white sign boards can actually be found in places that promote nature.

Many stores in Japan (not just Family Mart) also practice having a black &amp; white or a toned-down sign.

For those who did not know, there is a law in Japan where stores cannot use a brightly coloured or colourful signboard near a shrine/temple or places of nature. The guideline was created in 2007 and it&rsquo;s known as the Miyako Landscape Guideline which imposes strict regulations on the height and colour of buildings including their design and outdoor advertisements.

The regulations are so strict that it also details the regulations of roofs as &ldquo;roof tiles are to be silver-coloured&rdquo; and &ldquo;metal sheets other than copper sheets must be dark grey or black with no gloss&rdquo;.

The signboard shows the company&rsquo;s modesty and appreciation towards mother nature as they won&rsquo;t want to overshadow the greenery and beauty of the surroundings. Many of these black &amp; white signboards can be found in Kyoto where it&rsquo;s subbed as a city blessed with nature. Kyoto has numerous world, historical and cultural heritage sights left from its rich history of being Japan&rsquo;s capital.
Now that&rsquo;s pretty cool to know that Family Mart Malaysia had brought over a piece of Japan&rsquo;s culture to Malaysia. This also shows how important it is to preserve nature as nowadays, even our cities are running out of greenery. Who knows, maybe other companies can soon follow, and we can practice this to preserve the landscape around our green areas.
