For those who live in the heart of Kuala Lumpur or at least around the KL/Selangor area we all know the importance of having a Touch &lsquo;n Go (TnG) card in our wallets.
If you&rsquo;re one to frequently use public transport, you&rsquo;ll know for a fact that it&rsquo;s important to bring your TnG Card along with you to avoid the long lines at machines during rush hour. But lately, many Malaysians were also struggling to get their hands on the latest NFC Enhanced TnG Card which has unfortunately been sold online by Scalpers at almost double to triple its price.

Addressing The Touch &lsquo;n Go Monopoly System

Yesterday (19 March), Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had an open dialogue at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and addressed the rakyat and many youths on a number of their concerns.
One of the questions that were asked was if there are any plans to dismantle the Touch &lsquo;n Go monopoly for Malaysia&rsquo;s transport and road system. The youth also highlighted that in our current infrastructure such as petrol stations and parking lots, we can now use our debit cards to pay via Pay Wave but we are still stuck with the problematic Touch &lsquo;n Go system and its monopoly.

As the comment had pointed out a very good point, Anwar himself had agreed to the comment. For those who don&rsquo;t know, Touch &lsquo;n Go has been in operation for more than two decades and Anwar too agreed that there has not been convincing development or progress in the system.
&ldquo;I think you are right, we will have to reconsider that,&rdquo; he said.
Where Can We Currently Use Our Touch &lsquo;n Go Cards?

As of now, TnG cards cover payments of over 600 highway tolls and the RapidKL rail networks. Though there is the option to use cash, TnG has become the default payment method of many.
If you were to go to a convenience store and some grocery stores, they too offer the option to pay via TnG Card which makes it convenient if we don&rsquo;t have our debit cards or even cash on hand.
Speaking of progression, the only progression we&rsquo;ve seen from TnG over the years was the introduction of their Touch &lsquo;n PayDirect system which enables users to directly deduct the parking and toll feed from their eWallet.

Many still wanted an explanation on why we haven&rsquo;t seen any open payment systems for our highway tolls. PLUS had attempted to &ldquo;break&rdquo; the monopoly back in 2018 when they introduced the PLUS RFID System which was linked to credit and debit cards.
In the previous administration, there were talks of a Multi-Lane Flow (MLFF) to be implemented by 2025 and former Works Minister Fadlillah Yusof says that it would have been able to use any digital payment providers, thus putting an end to TnG&rsquo;s monopoly system.

However, after the change in government, there has been little to no information about the progress of implementing the MLFF system. Prior to completely removing the toll barriers on highways, the Ministry of Work, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Transport will need to resolve several matters first.
Hopefully, after hearing Anwar&rsquo;s answer yesterday, we&rsquo;ll slowly see an end to the monopolization of TnG. Plus, we are now living in an era where we have NFC payments where we can tap our credit/ debit cards or even our smartphones or smartwatches such as those overseas.

The Ministry of Finance has said the move is designed to strengthen the country's fiscal position, broaden the tax base, and upgrade infrastructure and the social safety net. While some consumers are bracing for price hikes, analysts believe the impact will vary across sectors.
What&rsquo;s Staying Tax-Free (No changes)?

5% Sales Tax: Luxury Food and Industrial Goods

</ul>

Business and Market Response

Despite consumer concerns over potential price hikes, analysts from CIMB Securities and Hong Leong Investment Bank have suggested the expanded SST will have a limited impact on inflation and broader economic performance.
CIMB warned of potential margin pressure for consumer-facing businesses, especially those selling discretionary or luxury goods, as companies may absorb part of the cost increases to maintain affordability. Conversely, essential goods manufacturers and retailers are expected to weather the changes better, buoyed by consistent demand.
HLIB, meanwhile, maintains that sectors such as construction, banking, and healthcare are largely insulated due to cost pass-through capabilities and strong regional competitiveness.
The Finance Ministry projects inflation to remain within a manageable range of 2.0% to 3.5%, thanks to the targeted nature of the revised tax framework.
A Grace Period for Compliance
To ease the transition, the government has announced a non-punitive grace period until the end of 2025, during which no enforcement action will be taken against businesses making a genuine effort to comply.

Dashcam Footage Emerges as Crucial Evidence
Police have confirmed that dashcam footage from a vehicle travelling near the crash site has been handed over and is now central to the investigation. The 38-second clip, which has since gone viral online, shows the bus speeding along the highway, overtaking another vehicle, and then losing control before toppling onto its side and crashing into a guardrail. The footage ends with the bus colliding with the Alza MPV behind.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the dashcam footage was submitted voluntarily, and officers will soon record a statement from the owner. &ldquo;We believe this video can help determine critical factors such as the bus&rsquo;s speed and road conditions at the time,&rdquo; he said during a press briefing at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
He confirmed initial observations suggest the bus was travelling at high speed and the front of the vehicle was penetrated by the metal railing upon impact. This would explain why victims seated on the left side of the bus bore the brunt of the collision. &ldquo;Most injuries were to the left shoulder. The bus landed on its left, causing passengers to be thrown sideways,&rdquo; Noor Hisam said.
Survivors Describe Terrifying Moments Before the Crash

Among the survivors was 22-year-old student Nur Irdina Huri, who recounted the chilling moments before the bus overturned. &ldquo;The bus was going downhill fast, swaying dangerously. I wasn&rsquo;t asleep and could smell something burning. Everything happened so fast,&rdquo; she told reporters from her hospital bed.
Nur Irdina, a student of Early Childhood Education, managed to escape through a small gap in the wreckage. She suffered waist injuries and a sprained ankle. &ldquo;It was pitch black and chaotic. I couldn&rsquo;t help my friends &ndash; I couldn&rsquo;t even see them.&rdquo;
Another student who lost her life in the accident was 22-year-old Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad. Her brother, Wan Muhammad Sham, 31, said she had returned home to celebrate Aidiladha with all nine siblings. &ldquo;She cooked mee celup for the entire family before heading back to campus. None of us expected that to be our final meal together,&rdquo; he said.

In a separate conversation with a UPSI student, she shared that one of her friends had also encountered issues with a bus service. Following news of the UPSI crash, the driver of that bus chose to cancel the trip, reportedly unwilling to take any risks after the tragic incident.
She also mentioned that several passengers on the crashed bus had sensed something was amiss earlier in the journey. However, none of the students dared to raise their concerns with the driver, fearing he might react aggressively if confronted.
Road Conditions and Human Error in Focus

The crash occurred around 1 AM in wet and dark conditions, on a downhill stretch with poor visibility and no road markings. Noor Hisam, who visited the site himself, confirmed the road was unlit and steep. &ldquo;There are no clear lines on the road. It was raining earlier, and everything was dark,&rdquo; he said.
He also noted that the bus narrowly avoided plunging into a ravine on the other side of the guardrail. &ldquo;Most of the victims were found near a ditch beside the railing. Survivors had to crawl out of the wreckage,&rdquo; he added.
Police have yet to conclude whether the cause was due to human error, technical failure, or road conditions. Statements from survivors, forensic analysis, and dashcam footage will all contribute to the final report.
Authorities and Agencies Respond

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has issued a show-cause letter to the bus company involved. Meanwhile, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is conducting a Safety Inspection and Audit (JISA) on the vehicle and its operator, under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
&ldquo;Strict action will be taken once investigations are complete. Every life lost is a tragedy not just for the families, but for the nation,&rdquo; said Loke in a statement on social media.
Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has also weighed in, calling for immediate preventive action. His Royal Highness stressed the need to address weaknesses in road safety laws and enforcement to avoid such tragedies in future.
Community Mourns, Support Pours In

UPSI Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said the university is offering logistical and emotional support to the victims&rsquo; families. Each affected family has been assigned a liaison officer to coordinate assistance. &ldquo;We are helping with accommodation and any other necessary support,&rdquo; he said.
The Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) has also announced that the next of kin of the deceased will receive RM2,000 in initial financial assistance, along with an additional RM1,000 in disaster relief funds to help with funeral arrangements.
Farewell to the Fallen

A convoy of hearses carrying 13 of the deceased students left the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh at around 8.55 PM en route to Jertih, Terengganu, where the victims&rsquo; funerals were held. The other two bodies were transported from Gerik Hospital earlier in the evening.
Funeral prayers were conducted at Masjid Hadhari before the students were laid to rest in their respective hometown cemeteries. UPSI also dispatched a contingent of 160 students from Tanjong Malim to Jertih to pay their final respects to their fallen peers.
As the country continues to mourn, the public and authorities alike are calling for accountability, reform, and remembrance for the lives lost on what was meant to be a safe journey back to campus after a festive holiday.

Among those voicing concern is Loh, a power tool seller who requested partial anonymity. Speaking to local media, Loh said that the compounding cost of selling on Shopee&mdash;including this new SPayLater fee&mdash;is driving him to reconsider the platform entirely.
&ldquo;My business has to contend with more and more extra fees, and I&rsquo;d need to hire someone just to operate and manage the sales channel,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s pushed my business away from focusing too much effort towards selling on Shopee.&rdquo;
A Pattern of Increasing Charges

While Shopee has highlighted that SPayLater can increase a seller&rsquo;s gross merchandise value by offering flexible payments to buyers, it has not justified the fee hike directly or provided any context for the additional cost burden. The omission has left many sellers feeling alienated, especially as BNPL platforms typically share costs across both buyers and sellers in a more transparent manner.
What&rsquo;s Next for Shopee Sellers?
As sellers scramble to adjust to the updated fee structure, questions remain about Shopee&rsquo;s long-term strategy and its impact on small and medium-sized businesses. If costs continue to rise without improved support or clearer communication, more sellers like Loh may look to alternative platforms or offline sales.
For now, the 4.5% fee for SPayLater orders will go into effect from 8 May 2025, and sellers will have no choice but to comply &mdash; or reconsider their future on the platform.

Shopee Hikes SPayLater Seller Fee To 4.5% From 8 May

Malaysia&rsquo;s real wages have deteriorated drastically over the past four decades, leaving today&rsquo;s workforce with significantly reduced purchasing power, former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim warned in a recent interview with Sinar Harian. He remarked that many Malaysian graduates are now trapped in low-income jobs despite the country&rsquo;s economic growth, and are increasingly unable to meet basic life milestones such as home or car ownership.
Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

Quoting recent data from the Ministry of Higher Education, Muhammad pointed out that around 40% of university graduates today earn less than RM2,000 per month in their first job. He believes this is a clear indication that the country&rsquo;s education and economic systems are not aligned with the demands of a competitive, modern workforce.
&ldquo;Without major reforms in our education and economic frameworks, we are condemning our youth to a future dominated by low-skilled, low-paying jobs,&rdquo; he said. He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.
Foreign Labour Suppressing Wage Growth

Muhammad also addressed the impact of Malaysia&rsquo;s heavy reliance on foreign labour, which has contributed to wage stagnation&mdash;particularly for the country&rsquo;s B40 income group. As of 31 December 2024, there were 16.78 million workers in the country, with 2.37 million or roughly 14% of them being foreign workers.
These foreign workers primarily fill 3D (dirty, dangerous, and difficult) jobs in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, food services, and domestic work. While these jobs are often shunned by locals, the influx of low-cost labour from countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal has created wage suppression for Malaysians in similar roles.
&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

Malaysia is not only failing to retain its skilled workforce&mdash;it is also losing talent to neighbouring countries with better wages. Muhammad highlighted that many local nurses are now migrating to Singapore, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE, where they can earn two to four times more than they would at home.
For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

Muhammad also criticised the nation&rsquo;s obsession with GDP growth as a benchmark for success. &ldquo;GDP doesn&rsquo;t put food on the table,&rdquo; he said bluntly. &ldquo;Real progress should be measured through employment quality, wage growth, and job structure&mdash;not aggregate output.&rdquo;
He noted that at international forums such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions in developed countries have shifted from GDP to employment outcomes. &ldquo;The real question they ask is: what kinds of jobs are being created? That&rsquo;s where Malaysia needs to start focusing,&rdquo; he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed to Avoid Long-Term Decline
Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;
