The monsoon season can really be harsh as we typically saw rainfall almost every day for the past three months.
If you&rsquo;ve been keeping up with the news, mother nature has not been too kind to us as the monsoon season caused a landslide at Batang Kali last month, killing a total of 31 people.

But before the incident, the Selangor State Forestry Department (JPNS) issued a notice to all hikers as they have halted all hiking activities due to the dangers of the monsoon season on 1 November 2022.

Fast forwarding 3 months later, JPNS announced the reopening of hiking and climbing activities in the state. Outdoor lovers can finally plan out their weekend trips as the state will be opening all activities starting 1 February.
The re-opening includes hiking trails that cover six Eco Forest Parks and hiking trails in the Hulu Selangor Forest, Central Selangor Forest and Klang Beach Forest.
Hikers Will Require A Permit from JPNS

One thing that all hikers will need to note is that when wanting to hike at specific locations around Selangor, they will be required to apply for a permit at the nearest forest district office. Aside from a permit, it is now compulsory for hikers to use the service of guides starting on the same date.

A total of 18 hiking areas in Selangor will require hikers and climbers to have a permit. You can check the list here:

Another thing to note is that some mountains in the list are located in Pahang and do share borders with Selangor such as Bukit Cin Cin and Gunung Ulu Kali. Hikers who hike around the Pahang/ Selangor border will also need to find out if the mountain is considered private property and are advised to not trespass on the land.
One example would be the between the Gohtong Jaya and Genting Highlands area where locals reported parties making money as they offer hiking services. Those irresponsible parties charge RM 60/ pax and claim to have permits to hike the area.

Netizens Complain On Efficiency And Transparency of JPNS
&nbsp;Despite the good news on the re-opening of hiking activities, many netizens were not too keen on the idea that hikers need to apply for permits and have guides accompany them during their hike.
Now that we are in 2023, we would think that the permits can be applied for via online applications. Unfortunately, these permits will require hikers to apply manually at the forestry office days before their hike.

Meanwhile in Kelantan, a netizen on Twitter tweeted out that the state has implemented the use of guides on tracks and some are questioning why a guide is needed on tracks that are easy to hike.

As of now, JPNS and other official authorities have not answered the questions of the public. Aside from that, they will need to ensure that the guides are well-trained and prepared for the job before the public are able to request for their service.

The notice, dated 24 April 2025, gives the company three months to either resolve the situation or return its Intermediation Business Licence (IBL) by 24 July 2025.
APAD cited non-compliance with conditions outlined under the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (Act 715) and regulatory requirements introduced in 2019. These include failing to ensure that its drivers possess valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and E-Hailing Vehicle Permit (eVP) licences&mdash;documents that are legally mandatory for all e-hailing drivers in Malaysia.

What was meant to be a joyous getaway turned into a harrowing experience when several individuals fell violently ill after indulging in a lok lok feast at Genting Sempah, Pahang. The aftermath saw multiple guests suffering from severe food poisoning, with some requiring hospitalisation, leaving the group frustrated and deeply concerned.

She and a group of 36 friends had rented villas for a three-day, two-night retreat near the Pahang-Selangor border. During their stay, they noticed a well-known lok lok (skewered food) truck serving guests at a neighbouring villa. Intrigued by the sight, they decided to book the same service for their celebration the following evening, paying RM2,000 for a meal meant for 40 people.
From Feast to Food Poisoning in Hours

The meal commenced at 6 PM on 1st February, and the group eagerly tucked in, expecting a delightful dining experience. However, just four hours later, disaster struck. More than ten people in the group began suffering from extreme vomiting and diarrhoea&mdash;undeniable signs of food poisoning. As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. However, her efforts were met with denial and deflection. The company refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the driver, claiming that he had accepted the booking independently without official company authorisation.
Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.
A Wider Food Safety Concern

This incident sheds light on a concerning issue regarding food safety standards and hygiene practices among mobile food vendors. Joey voiced her apprehension, questioning how many more unsuspecting patrons might have suffered similar cases of food poisoning from the same vendor without realising the source.
&ldquo;If this particular lok lok truck had been operating at a pasar malam, how many more people would have gotten food poisoning? Would they also blame it on other food and let the matter go?&rdquo; she asked.
She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.
The Need for Stricter Hygiene Regulations
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter food safety regulations to safeguard public health. Food truck operators must be held to high hygiene standards in food handling, storage, and preparation to prevent such harmful occurrences.
