A viral video captured the heart-wrenching sight of the calf&rsquo;s mother standing protectively over her baby&rsquo;s body for hours, reluctant to leave until sedated by wildlife officers.
The incident, which occurred on the stretch of road between Gerik and Jeli, cut through the heart of the Royal Belum State Park and Temengor Forest Reserve &mdash; two of Malaysia&rsquo;s most biodiverse and ecologically critical landscapes. These forests are key habitats for Malayan elephants, tapirs, sun bears, and the critically endangered Malayan tiger.
WWF-Malaysia: Short-Term Action is Crucial

Following the tragedy, WWF-Malaysia issued an urgent call for immediate and targeted intervention. While the organisation welcomed large-scale plans like the proposed Perak Elephant Sanctuary and federal funding for ecological corridors, it stressed that these long-term solutions cannot prevent the growing number of elephant deaths now occurring on Malaysian highways.
&ldquo;We welcome long-term efforts such as the Perak Elephant Sanctuary and forest protection incentives, but we must act now with short-term solutions to stop the bloodshed,&rdquo; WWF-Malaysia stated.
WWF-Malaysia outlined a series of practical, cost-effective measures that the government and road authorities can implement to save lives &mdash; both animal and human:

<li>Install speed bumps at verified wildlife crossing hotspots to physically slow vehicles down.</li>
<li>Construct additional wildlife crossings, including underpasses and viaducts, to give elephants and other large mammals a safe way across highways.</li>
<li>Strictly enforce reduced speed limits, particularly during dusk-to-dawn hours when elephants are more active.</li>
<li>Expand wildlife corridor mapping to update where animals are currently moving due to habitat fragmentation.</li>
</ul>
These solutions, WWF notes, have been tested elsewhere in Malaysia with measurable success. For instance, a 200-metre wildlife viaduct at KM157 of the Gerik-Jeli Highway, built under the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan in 2015, has shown promise in reducing roadkill incidents &mdash; but it's currently the only one across a 100km stretch of road.
Shrinking Habitat, Rising Conflict

Peninsular Malaysia&rsquo;s elephant population is estimated at fewer than 1,500 individuals, and their habitat is shrinking rapidly. A 2016 study by WWF found that elephant roaming grounds in the peninsula have decreased by 68% over recent decades, largely due to land-use changes, agriculture, road expansion, and urban sprawl.
As a result, elephants are increasingly forced to cross roads and enter settlements in search of food and space, leading to rising conflict with humans. According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), between 2020 and 2024, there were 4,919 reported human-elephant conflict cases, causing RM39.4 million in damage to property, crops, and vehicles.
WWF-Malaysia is urging a more coordinated approach across agencies, states, and communities to protect remaining elephant habitats and minimise dangerous encounters.
Government Response: 39 Wildlife Crossings Upgraded

&ldquo;These signs and lighting systems aim to inform drivers they&rsquo;re entering areas frequently used by elephants moving between forest patches,&rdquo; said KKR in a public statement.
Authorities have also deployed electrified fencing, salt licks to lure elephants away from highways, and LED-based wildlife warning systems in several high-risk areas. While these efforts mark progress, conservation groups warn they are not enough unless supported by stronger enforcement and more physical barriers to prevent accidents.
Calls for Broader, Tech-Based Solutions

&ldquo;These recommendations must be followed by real implementation &mdash; not just planning on paper,&rdquo; he added.

<li>Avoid night-time driving through known elephant zones, particularly during full moons or rainy weather, when visibility is low and elephant activity peaks.</li>
<li>Slow down and dim your lights if you see animals or receive headlight signals from other vehicles.</li>
<li>Never use high beams, honk, or provoke elephants &mdash; these actions may trigger aggression.</li>
<li>Do not stop to take photos or approach elephants. These are wild animals and can react unpredictably.</li>
<li>Turn back if an elephant displays warning signs such as ear flapping, trumpeting, or mock charges.</li>
</ul>
Remember, elephants can move up to 40km/h and may attack if threatened.
The Bigger Picture: Coexistence Requires Collective Effort

NCT Dream Is Bringing A Two-Day Concert To Malaysia In December 2025!

More than a decade after the horrific downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the United Nations&rsquo; aviation body has formally ruled that the Russian Federation was responsible for the 2014 air disaster over eastern Ukraine, which killed all 298 people on board. The decision marks a significant step in the long quest for truth, justice, and accountability led by the governments of Australia and the Netherlands.
MH17 Shot Down by Russian Missile Over War-Torn Ukraine

On 17 July 2014, MH17, a Boeing 777 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down mid-flight while traversing Ukrainian airspace over the Donetsk region&mdash;an area engulfed in armed conflict between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists.
Investigations later confirmed the aircraft was struck by a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile launched from territory controlled by pro-Russian militants. The crash resulted in the deaths of 283 passengers and 15 crew members. Among the victims were 196 Dutch nationals, 43 Malaysians, 38 Australians, 27 from Australia (including residents), 12 Indonesians, 10 Britons, 4 Germans, 4 Belgians, 3 Filipinos, 1 Canadian and 1 New Zealander.
The tragedy sent shockwaves around the globe, coming just four months after the disappearance of MH370, another Malaysia Airlines flight, whose fate remains unresolved.
ICAO Ruling: Russia Violated International Air Law

On 12 May 2025, the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)&mdash;a specialised agency of the United Nations&mdash;ruled that Russia had violated international air law by failing to uphold its obligations under the Chicago Convention. The convention obliges all signatory states to &ldquo;refrain from the use of weapons against civil aircraft in flight.&rdquo;
The ruling followed a formal complaint lodged in 2022 by the governments of Australia and the Netherlands. Intrigued by the sight, they decided to book the same service for their celebration the following evening, paying RM2,000 for a meal meant for 40 people.

The meal commenced at 6 PM on 1st February, and the group eagerly tucked in, expecting a delightful dining experience. However, just four hours later, disaster struck. More than ten people in the group began suffering from extreme vomiting and diarrhoea&mdash;undeniable signs of food poisoning. As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.

She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.

As Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches, Malaysians are eagerly preparing for celebrations by stocking up on kuih Raya, a staple for welcoming guests. A recent survey at Pasar Kubang Pasu in Kelantan found that three to five pieces of kuih Raya are still being sold for RM2. However, this price, which has remained unchanged for the past four years, is expected to rise by as much as 25% after Aidilfitri. This means consumers may soon have to pay RM2.50 for the same quantity.
Coconut Milk Prices Behind the Increase

"We feel bad about increasing kuih prices, but we have no choice. If we stick to the old prices, we won&rsquo;t make any profit," he said.
Tarmizi also highlighted the unpredictable nature of kuih sales. "Some days, everything sells out, and on other days, it doesn&rsquo;t. If it doesn&rsquo;t sell, we are left with nothing but exhaustion," he added, expressing the challenges faced by small vendors.
Possible Further Price Hikes During Ramadan

Unfortunately, the situation may worsen as coconut milk prices are expected to rise even further during Ramadan. Coconut milk vendor Muhammad Nor Akmal Jaafar stated that due to difficulties in sourcing fresh coconuts, prices could climb to RM20 per kilogram during the fasting month.
He explained that suppliers rely on coconuts imported from Indonesia, which cost between RM3.30 and RM3.40 per piece. However, transportation delays often result in some coconuts arriving rotten, increasing production costs and reducing supply.
"For now, I am selling coconut milk at RM13 per kilogram because I don&rsquo;t have the heart to charge more. But if coconut prices continue to rise, sellers might have to increase the price to RM20 per kilogram during Ramadan," he warned.
Uncertain Outlook for Kuih Prices
