Their motivation stems from a desire to bring joy to people, particularly those in the B40 community while continuing to bring smiles to their faces.
It's a rare sight indeed to find satay priced at a mere RM0.50 per stick, especially in light of rising raw material costs. Yet, the couple remains steadfast in their commitment to affordability, prioritizing community happiness over profit margins.
Since August 2023, the couple has been selling their mouthwatering satay at a night market that caters to the B40 demographic. Customers who frequent their stall attest to their kindness and commend the incredibly affordable prices, all without compromising on taste or quality.
What Made Them Sell The Satay At RM0.50 A Stick?

The heartwarming catalyst behind their decision to maintain low satay prices unfolded right at their stall. On one occasion, a visibly struggling couple with six children stopped by to purchase satay. At the time, the satay was priced at RM1 per stick, and upon hearing the cost, the couple hesitated, realizing they couldn't afford it, and promptly left. This encounter deeply moved Nordin, prompting him to reduce the price of their chicken satay from RM1 to RM0.50 per stick.
In a poignant twist of fate, the same couple returned to their stall later, pleasantly surprised to find the chicken satay now priced at 50 cents per stick. Nordin expressed his delight in providing affordable satay for the family, relishing the opportunity to assist them. He affirmed his commitment to maintaining the price at 50 cents per stick, ensuring accessibility for all.
Sincerity Will Become Blessings When Helping Others

&ldquo;I believe that if you sincerely help, blessings will come. Thank god our three children also support this effort,&rdquo; shared Nordin.
Nordin's stall has become a hotspot at the night market, drawing in a steady stream of customers. With daily sales ranging from 400 to 600 sticks of satay, it's evident that their offerings have struck a chord with the community. Beyond their regular patrons, they also receive numerous orders, a testament to the widespread support and appreciation for their affordable prices and the values they uphold.
Each morning, Nordin and his wife embark on their trip to the market, where they meticulously select the essential ingredients for their satay. From procuring chicken and meat to preparing their homemade peanut sauce and nasi impit, they dedicate themselves to crafting quality dishes. With an estimated requirement of 10 kilograms of meat and chicken, their dedication to the craft shines through in every skewer of satay they prepare.
"The stall opens at 6pm every day except Monday and Tuesday. Usually, the stall closes at 12pm, but sometimes the satay runs out early and the stall closes at 8.30pm," he said.
Their unwavering dedication is truly admirable. It's rare to encounter individuals with such genuine compassion and a commitment to ensuring that the B40 community is not left hungry. As patrons continue to flock to their stall, let's hope that they receive the ongoing support they deserve. The aftermath saw multiple guests suffering from severe food poisoning, with some requiring hospitalisation, leaving the group frustrated and deeply concerned.

She and a group of 36 friends had rented villas for a three-day, two-night retreat near the Pahang-Selangor border. During their stay, they noticed a well-known lok lok (skewered food) truck serving guests at a neighbouring villa. Intrigued by the sight, they decided to book the same service for their celebration the following evening, paying RM2,000 for a meal meant for 40 people.
From Feast to Food Poisoning in Hours

The meal commenced at 6 PM on 1st February, and the group eagerly tucked in, expecting a delightful dining experience. However, just four hours later, disaster struck. More than ten people in the group began suffering from extreme vomiting and diarrhoea&mdash;undeniable signs of food poisoning. As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. However, her efforts were met with denial and deflection. The company refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the driver, claiming that he had accepted the booking independently without official company authorisation.
Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.
A Wider Food Safety Concern

This incident sheds light on a concerning issue regarding food safety standards and hygiene practices among mobile food vendors. &ldquo;If this particular lok lok truck had been operating at a pasar malam, how many more people would have gotten food poisoning? Would they also blame it on other food and let the matter go?&rdquo; she asked.
She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.
The Need for Stricter Hygiene Regulations
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter food safety regulations to safeguard public health. Food truck operators must be held to high hygiene standards in food handling, storage, and preparation to prevent such harmful occurrences.

Popular F&B Outlet Mixue Faces Backlash Over Alleged Discriminatory Hiring Practices

As Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches, Malaysians are eagerly preparing for celebrations by stocking up on kuih Raya, a staple for welcoming guests. However, this cherished tradition is set to become more expensive, as vendors warn of a sharp price increase due to escalating costs of raw materials, particularly coconut milk.
A recent survey at Pasar Kubang Pasu in Kelantan found that three to five pieces of kuih Raya are still being sold for RM2. However, this price, which has remained unchanged for the past four years, is expected to rise by as much as 25% after Aidilfitri. This means consumers may soon have to pay RM2.50 for the same quantity.
Coconut Milk Prices Behind the Increase

One of the key factors driving up kuih prices is the rising cost of coconut milk, a crucial ingredient in many traditional Malaysian delicacies. Vendor Tarmizi Husin, who has been selling kuih for eight years, explained that coconut milk prices have surged from RM10 to RM16 per kilogram since December. Despite this, kuih vendors have been holding off on price hikes in an effort to keep their products affordable.
"We feel bad about increasing kuih prices, but we have no choice. If we stick to the old prices, we won&rsquo;t make any profit," he said.
Tarmizi also highlighted the unpredictable nature of kuih sales. "Some days, everything sells out, and on other days, it doesn&rsquo;t. If it doesn&rsquo;t sell, we are left with nothing but exhaustion," he added, expressing the challenges faced by small vendors.
Possible Further Price Hikes During Ramadan

Unfortunately, the situation may worsen as coconut milk prices are expected to rise even further during Ramadan. Coconut milk vendor Muhammad Nor Akmal Jaafar stated that due to difficulties in sourcing fresh coconuts, prices could climb to RM20 per kilogram during the fasting month.
He explained that suppliers rely on coconuts imported from Indonesia, which cost between RM3.30 and RM3.40 per piece. However, transportation delays often result in some coconuts arriving rotten, increasing production costs and reducing supply.
"For now, I am selling coconut milk at RM13 per kilogram because I don&rsquo;t have the heart to charge more. But if coconut prices continue to rise, sellers might have to increase the price to RM20 per kilogram during Ramadan," he warned.
Uncertain Outlook for Kuih Prices

While vendors are bracing for inevitable price adjustments, many remain hopeful that coconut prices will stabilise. If local coconut supplies are sufficient, the cost of coconut milk could remain steady, helping to prevent further hikes in the price of kuih Raya and other traditional treats.
For now, kuih lovers should be prepared to spend more on their festive favourites, as rising costs continue to impact local delicacies. Both vendors and consumers can only hope for a stabilisation of raw material prices to keep cherished traditions accessible to all.
With Ramadan approaching, many of us strive to be more mindful of our spending, especially with the temptation of festive food all around. However, the rising cost of goods has been an ongoing challenge, and this year is unlikely to be any different.
